Joe Millionaire

How do you all feel about the new Fox reality show "Joe Millionaire"? Similar to ABC's "The Bachelor," this show brings a group of women to a chateau to compete for a man they believe is worth $50 million...except in reality he only makes $19,000 a year. :o

ZTAMich 12-09-2002 09:28 PM

I think it's so sad it's funny! Love and money two things you should never ever play around with.
What else can you expect from Fox tho??

Turtlegirl 12-09-2002 09:33 PM

Seems kind of pointless to me. What's it going to prove, that there are some women who are golddiggers? I think everyone already knows that.
It would make more sense to have a show where they tell the contestants the bachelor (or bachelorette) is not wealthy and then later reveal that they are. That way they could weed out the people who were just in it for the person's money and the winner would be someone who was interested in the person for who they are. Then the money would just be an added bonus.
That kind of show would be much more positive but I know positivity isn't usually the general goal of television producers.

I hadn't heard about this show until I read the post. Leave it to Fox to come up with another reality tv show!

CanadianTeke 12-10-2002 12:36 AM

I wonder if the purpose of this show is to show that 'Love conquers all'. Ie when she finds out he only makes 19K she still stays with him because she loves him. Either that or Fox is just trying to get in on the trend. (does anybody remember 'Greed'? which started soon after 'who wants to be a millionaire') Either way it will probably get alot of viewers, the American public eats this stuff up like candy (so does the Canadian):D

The1calledTKE 12-10-2002 12:42 AM

People will probably just watch the last show to see if she sticks with him when she finds out the truth.

Where's the fun in that?

See, if they had come up with that first it would have been somewhat interesting, but now (after the Bachelor and this Joe Millionaire) it would never work.

Whatever happened to FOX's Bootcamp? I actually liked that reality show.

Greed is still on the Game Show Network. It's as boring now as it was back then.

MoxieGrrl 12-10-2002 10:07 AM

The Joe Millionaire guy is really good looking! Honestly, I'd take him, rich or not. :)

FuzzieAlum 12-10-2002 12:21 PM

Of course the girls will be upset. When you say, "Come be on our show to meet a millionaire," you're going to attract girls who want a rich guy. They have a right to be pissed - at Fox, at least.

Then again, they are golddiggers, so it's only what they deserve, right? I can't support the notion of going for someone because of his moolah.

What I question is the guy participating. He can't be a nice guy - he enjoys making fools out of other people and deceiving them? He's willing to go along with this cruel TV idea? I wouldn't want him just for that alone!

Kevin 12-10-2002 07:39 PM

So shallow girls going after a guy that is ultimately a jerk? Sounds like justice to me:D

Joe Millionaire

Has anyone heard much about this show? At first I thought it was just a copy of The Bachelor. But then last night I saw a more detailed preview. Apparently, the show takes a guy that makes $19,000 a year and gets all of these hotties to want to marry him because they think he's worth a $$million$$.

In the preview there were a couple of women talking about how great he was, yada, yada. It will be interesting to see their reactions when they discover that he's not rich. Kind of shows you where people's priorities are these days.

Anyways, unlike The Bachelor, I think I might actually watch this. I couldn't find a web site, but I didn't search too thoroughly either.

CrimsonTide4 12-12-2002 08:56 PM

But why does he have to make only $19K a year. . . that means he lives with like 6 roommates or something.

Can't he at least make $50K a year!?!?!?

AlphaSigLana 12-13-2002 01:05 AM

My dad used to work in construction (20 + years) and before he had kids he had a pretty good car, was able to go hunting, etc all the time. That was in the late 70's early 80's. anyway $19,000 does not sound like a lot at all and I know that construction workers make decent pay for a blue collar job. I'm sorry, but when i marry a man he needs to make a decent wage. I don't want to live pay check to paycheck. I want to know a man can take care of me. I don't expect a millionaire. i would be happy with a guy that made 50 k. I am going to work too. It is just to hard to raise a family on a low income, it can be done, but it is hard.

I caught the last four segemts of " the Bachelor". It was not all it was crack up to be. It probably going to be the same for "Joe Millionare". The Show " Elimidate" is more exciting. It may be a stupid show, but it's not boring:D

Steeltrap 12-13-2002 01:08 PM

Full circle

This is probably a weird linear descendant of Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire, the show that gave us larvy Darva Conger and icky Ricky Rockwell.

And I must chime in that a $19K a year man simply won't cut it for an older woman such as myself. ;) I don't want to be the primary breadwinner because I'm not in law, medicine or a heavy-balling field.
:p

It depends on where he lives, really... I mean, I make around $19k a year and fully support myself plus am able to pay off debts and save money... it depends on cost of living in his area. Here in Wisconsin, you can rent a decent sized house for $500/month... in other places, that wouldn't buy you a cardboard box to put over your head.

It does depend on the region. I'm in Southern California and don't want to move.
:)

anyone ever see

the SNL skit with ben affleck, "who wants to marry an eleventhousandaire?" it was hilarious. He had a bachelorette, and chris katan.

wooohoo, I'm JL

Still, I don't really think the point is that he isn't wealthy, I think it's that he and the network are lying. Yes, I'm sure many, if not most, of the women are gold-diggers; but they shouldn't be tricked.

Ginger 12-13-2002 04:09 PM

I know...and I'll watch and laugh right along with the rest of yall. I just thought it was funny that people were making 19k a year sound like the guy had to be homeless. :)

How many of you want to bet that after the show, his "part time model" status will go to full time?

I bet that will make him go up from 19K a year!lol!
