Dear Lord: Why are Finals Such a Pain in My Arse?

It is 2:00 am on a Saturday night, and I find myself staring at a tax map, trying to focus on Capital Gains & Losses wondering why on earth I will ever need to know this.... I want to be a lawyer. Not a CPA!

Oh well. Just venting. Hope all others studying right now (well, maybe not right this very minute as I type) are grasping what they are trying to grasp & will have it down cold in time for the test.

Imthechamp 12-08-2002 05:09 AM

Maybe if you were as smart as me, you'd only have to study 2 hours a week to keep a 3.4 gpa

:)

RedRoseSAI 12-08-2002 11:02 AM

You're right, Imthechamp. I suppose there is a difference between studying law and pursuing a degree in basketweaving...

kddani 12-08-2002 11:23 AM

I have my first law school final on Monday and i'm absolutely petrified. Thankfully we have a great finals schedule (Legal Process (Civ Pro I) on Monday, Torts Thursday, Contracts next Monday, Crim Law next Thursday)- so I can concentrate on one thing at a time.
My life all this week and the next two weeks has been just surrounded by books and study aids. Law school has this great way of making even the smartest people feel stupid.
Doesn't help when everyone says, "oh, you'll do fine. You wouldn't be where you are today if you weren't smart" blah blah blah. But then you feel like as much as you've studied you know nothin'!
Good luck to all my fellow law students, let us band together in this hell :)

Nice and harsh. I like that. :D

Ya'll encourage me so much to continue applying to Law Schools:D

Yeah, it's a crummy job, but someone has to do it :(

Hang in there, Andi!

Wow. I only had 3 finals my first semester of law school (we take legal writing 1st year instead of Crim Law & Evidence)... I have 5 finals this semester, 2 down, 3 to go. ACK!!!

You are right...I won't say you'll be fine--that sucks. I did do fine on my first law school final (Civ Pro-didn't freak) but then I kind of went into v-fib and couldn't concentrate while studying for my second exam (contracts)...somehow I didn't tank, and got my act together in time for Torts.

It's too late for advice now, but take heart in the fact that you are not alone...have faith in yourself and try not to throw up in front of everyone in the middle of the final! All I can say, is I love Law in a Flash (especially for Torts)!

Good luck to you...just think, in a few short days, you will have the most grueling experience of your life out of the way (I'm told some people see taking 1L law school exams is second only to being born as the most traumatic experience of your life!).

AXO_MOM_3 12-08-2002 04:06 PM

Who wants to settle for a 3.4?

juniorgrrl 12-08-2002 04:50 PM

I've had 2 of my finals already, and have the others Monday, Wednesday and Friday of this week.

The way I kept calm was staying away from school and the library. Listening to others just freaked me out. Don't be a lemming - do what is good for you :)

I went into Torts knowing it cold, and I feel like I kicked its ass. I've got contracts tomorrow, and I feel like I'm gonna do pretty well.

I figure, I've worked hard all semester and kept up, so there's no reason to freak out

I also make sure to let myself have fun, no matter what. I don't study for finals on Fri/Sat night. Its just counter productive because I feel sorry for myself.

Good luck everyone :D

A little last minute, but i might as well ask...

Any tips on the Erie Doctrine?

I get all the jurisdiction and venue stuff fine. That's good.

But i'm having issues w/ Erie and that whole area.

The test will probably be about half of each, that's what we've mainly covered this semester.

This is just the only final that i'm scared of, the rest will be a breeze. He wants more analysis and history, not issue spotting like the rest of my classes. And he's know for being a sadist with his exams. High score last year before the curve was a 41%. Ouch

Ooh, sorry. I had the only Civ Pro professor in the USA who spent a ton of time on Due Process (hello, so we could review it in Con Law) and only about 5 minutes on Erie. Her favorite testing subjects were DP, Jursidiction, Venue, Standing, & lots of general questions about rules (esp. FRCP 12). Issue spotting was her thing.

I'm sure someone on here will have some advice for you though. Take comfort in the curve (at least until you get into upper level classes, then the curve sucks).

You're right. I'll eventually get it up back to 3.7 or so...I'm just slacking cuz alot of drama IRL :(

sororitygirl2 12-08-2002 06:48 PM

Good luck to y'all on finals! Glad it's not me anymore!

ChiOqt 12-08-2002 06:55 PM

Finals haven't even started for me yet. Our reading days are Monday and Tuesday.....hardcore stressin' right here trying to handle two jobs, being broke and findin' money for the bills, school events, and studying for finals to keep the 3.8! Who came up with this finals bullsh@$ anyways, aren't the normal tests enough for these professors!?!?!?!

UofIL AXO 12-08-2002 07:48 PM

Boo to finals!!!!!! Let's just take the grade I have right now and call it a day!

I just want to take the only final I have tomorrow. The rest can stay as is.

KappaTarzan 12-09-2002 12:25 AM

finals suck at life

bcdphie 12-09-2002 12:32 AM

I write 6 finals in 5 days  , starting tomorrow - but this time next week I will be enjoying my 24 day christmas vacation.

juniorgrrl 12-09-2002 02:05 AM

Hehe...we spent the ENTIRE SEMESTER on In personam jurisdiction. We spent maybe 3 classes on venue.

My CivPro teacher is notorious for giving you facts that fall in between all of the cases we've read, and we have to argue it every way imaginible. The tests take the entire 3.5 hours.

I've got that one Wednesday. I'm not *too* concerned, because its a 2 hour class. If I can get an A in legal writing (and I hope I did, I thought my memo rocked) that will balance out a possible C (OMG, if I get a C, it will be my first C ever) in CivPro
 :D

A 3.7 isn't that great either. Oopsy, did that sound mean?

Anyway, my first college finals, what a landmark! I came in with alot of AP units so my classes aren't generally ones that freshmen take their first year... but I think I'll be okay due to the fact that (a) I've been studying for like three weeks straight and (b) I'm a big nerd anyway. ;)

XOXO,
Annie.

Mine wasn't finals as much as it was projects.

In the span of three days i had to do a brochure of the statues and monuments on campus, give a thematic talk about Student Rules regarding alcohol and parties, construct a site plan for a new park in College Station, put together a project highlighting the sense of place at our fraternity house, come up with a proposed tourism development plan for the King Ranch, and develop a golf resort in Coastal Turkey.

I relocated to the computer lab on campus last week, thank god it's open 24 hours a day :-D

I only have two finals, and they're both this friday, so afterwards i'm parking myself at Northgate to celebrate being one semester closer to graduating!

Kitso
KS 361 hours i spent in the SCC last week, cuz the SCC won't let me be...

I don't get it

My contracts final was not all that bad. It was kinda easy actually. I know this sounds nuts, but the finals weeks have been the easiest parts of law school so far. Its not like I haven't been dealing with the stuff for the last 4 months, now I get to show off that I know it.

I just hope my grades are as good as I feel like they should be based on how I think I did on the tests. We don't get them until January

AlphaSigLana 12-11-2002 12:04 AM

My advertising media final sucks. It is a take home and I have been working on it for days. Half the stuff ineed to do requires a mac computer. I have to do flowcharts etc, but the Media Flight Plan only works on macs. I have no idea what I am doing as it is. I am trying to create a media plan and I don't know how to figure out spot markets etc. I hate this final.

dzandiloo 12-11-2002 12:42 AM

Ugh. Evidence & Income Taxation...both finals on 2 days consecutively. What a whip. But, I didn't implode. I just hope I passed (as a 3L who has had great grades up until now, I have stopped caring & just want to pass & get it over with!). Insurance law is Thursday, then I am DONE! Looking forward to a week of nothing, then heading to Dallas for the holidays.

Now...a little sleep would be good.

Junior-glad contracts went well for you. I came out of my contracts final feeling like I had been assaulted (and I used to actually work in an area related to contract law b/f law school).

Hope everyone else is hanging in there. It's almost over.

sugar and spice 12-11-2002 02:18 AM

I am just simply not prepared for finals this semester. I've been studying five times as much as I ever have in my life and I'm still struggling to keep up. I've more or less written this semester off -- it is going to be the most depressing semester I've ever had grade-wise, no matter how much work I put into the next two weeks. And I have a Sunday final! :(

dzandiloo 12-12-2002 10:31 PM

WOOHOO!!! I passed Evidence! Whew. I came out of that final thinking I had failed, but somehow I pulled it off, and got a good enough grade to make up for the POS grade I got in Texas Pre-Trial last semester....the GPA is saved so far...but then, I've only gotten one grade back...5 more to go, and one of 'em's Income Tax...and the rest of those results probably won't be in until after Christmas. Ugh.

But I'm done, and think I'll go have a Corona. Hope everyone else is doing well.

You get grades already?!? They won't have ours in until after New Years. They have some policy that they won't post grades until every single teacher has their grades in. And the school is closed 12/24-01/01. So there's a good chance that it'll be a week or two before school starts for spring before I know my fall grades.

Thank goodness my tuition is entirely paid for by scholarship. Let's just say I'm getting what I'm paying for (Nothing!) Well, except for Torts. I have a fabulous, wonderful torts teacher. All my other classes, it seems like we've only covered about 1/2 of what we should have (according to my mom and aunt, who are lawyers...)

I think they do that to the 1L's here too, but if an upper level prof finalizes his grades, and gets them turned in, they will post them & we can access them on the net. My income tax prof posted our grades today too--and I passed that one too (the two I was really, really worried about...so I probably screwed up one of the others).

bcdphie 12-13-2002 08:04 PM

I'm done I'm done I'm done I'm done.... 6 finals in 5 days but I made it - and now I am going to enjoy 24 glorious days off... :)

They do that to the whole school, here. So, I won't know until Jan. 5th how I did. I love how they wait until after people have paid their money for next semester (and given time for the checks to clear) before posting grades. Its always nice to get last semester's grades 7 days before starting back

A Cautionary Tale...

I have to tell you all to take care of yourselves during finals. I didn't, and it really got me in trouble. I'm an Architecture major, and Tuesday and Wednesday, we had final reviews (when they bring in outside critics--usually architects and professors--to discuss your final project). Needless to say, that kept me up every night since Thanksgiving break, working on the project. I didn't get much sleep, and I didn't eat that much, because I was always running around. In addition, I had a Physics final, and I am working on getting my graduate school applications out. There wasn't much sleep or food experienced by my system. I don't know how, but I made it through 2 days of reviews (from 9 am-6 pm!), an appointment to print my portfolio, a Physics final, and a class meeting. After it was all over, I got really sick. My stomach, which had been in knots since Thanksgiving break, gave out on me, and I couldn't keep anything down. At the urging of Mr. Munchkin, I finally made it down to the infirmary Thursday night, where I was diagnosed with severe dehydration. Basically, my BP was 50/30 standing, and they debated whether or not to send me to the ER. Luckily, I was lucid enough to walk there with little assistance, so they kept me. They did, however, give me 5 liters of fluid via IV from about 5:30 AM to 8:00 PM the next day, kept tabs on my eating/drinking schedule, and sent me home with a supply of Powerade and a pretty strict diet. I'm confined to my room for the next few days, and I gave everyone involved a pretty nasty shock.

At this point, I don't even care if I passed my Physics class...I was barely lucid during the final, and my main priority right now is my health. Applications will get done when they get done, basically.

So, the moral of the story is to take care of yourselves during finals. Drink lots of fluids (not just water--I drink about a gallon of water a day, and they said that water isn't enough), take your vitamins, and eat! Eat eat eat!

That would be college for me... I thought I was smart until I got to college. I don't know what the hell is wrong with me! I got straight A's, etc... good GPA, and I am barely keeping above water here... I think it comes down to the fact that I am really a bad multiple choice test taker, I never was bad, but now it's like whew!

I've studied round the clock like everyday, and it doesn't even make a difference. Pisses me off.
