Here's a list of the safest and most dangerous cities nationwide.

I find some of the Michigan ones kinda funny...

I want some of whatever these guys were smoking when they ranked Danbury, CT among the safest places to live.

They must have included the neighboring towns, because Danbury itself is not a very safe place...

I saw that State College, PA is one of the safest places to live overall in metro areas...

Munchkin03 12-07-2002 02:23 PM

I guess it's good that my hometown's metro area is too small to be ranked. I wonder what the methodology is for this...depending on the company, it could be skewed for certain factors.

I didn't realize this was the same company who did the "Smartest State" and "Healthiest State" lists.

Richmond is 13th most dangerous to live!!

valkyrie 12-07-2002 03:31 PM

Huh. Chicago's not listed anywhere. Interesting.

OrigamiTulip 12-07-2002 03:36 PM

Gainesville is #24 on the list of the Overall Most Dangerous 25....

According to their methodology page (scroll up for the link), Chicago and other Illinois cities were eliminated because Illinois uses a different method for calculating rape statistics than other states use.

Aha, that's what I get for not reading anything! Thanks! :)

Yeah! I've never been so proud to live in metro St. Louis. I'm going to go lock my doors now and call my insurance agency.

OUlioness01 12-07-2002 05:29 PM

how is Ohio that dangerous? I just don't get it...

**** From the website ****
Chicago and Other Illinois Cities: For several years, rape numbers submitted by cities in the state of Illinois have not met the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) guidelines. This remains the case with 2001 crime data. According to state statisticians, the state of Illinois tracks "sexual assault," which includes not only female rapes, but also offenses such as male rape, sodomy, etc. For these reasons, Chicago and other Illinois cities once again are not found in this year's Safest City rankings.

Other Cities: Below is a list of cities that the

I was wondering at first why chicago wasn't on the list, but this gives an explanation for it.

Yay, Fresno is ranked #13 in the worst Metropolitan areas. I've never been so proud.

AOX81 12-09-2002 08:55 AM

My hometown was ranked #4, #6 , and #8...go Flint!

Kevin 12-09-2002 10:28 AM

My city wasn't on there... It's generally pretty safe. We had an armed robbery thing a few weeks back.. I did a story on it for the news station. The Public Info Officer tells me that the guy didn't get held up... He had just confessed to cleaning out the cash drawer and then reporting a robbery.

alphachiohmy 12-09-2002 12:13 PM

I never believed St. Louis was that bad and had never seen the rankings until today. I was robbed myself at what the robber said was gunpoint downtown St. Louis one night before going out a year ago. I am so used to going into the city regularly, cause when you live in an Illinois burb there is not much to do. I just think that you need to be careful no matter where you are. Crime related to drugs or personal vendettas is different that random crime.

Even though, Chicago or where I live now isn't rated, my suburb is full of Frank Lloyd Wright mansions and nice cars, but borders a rough part of Chicago. But Chicago, is like that - crime-ridden areas border multimillion dollar condos. Its pretty much block by block in some parts where its safe and then not safe.

No real surprize that the Denver area is pretty safe -- all things considered. I guess there's no big city that is utopia.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone...

Last night at the Lambda Chi Alpha house in Flint a bunch of cars were broken into.

A girlfriend who was staying the night there had her laptop stolen. Whoever stole it hooked it up and signed on with her AOL Instant Messanger and proceeded to IM all the brothers on her list about all the stuff that they had stolen. They said that they should be able to steal from Lambda Chi Alpha because their parents pay for everything and because his relatives had to pick cotton for free.

Away message from one the brothers:

Going Christmas Shopping in Flint? Here is how to do it
1.)Find a Parking Lot
2.)Break into any car you can
3.)Steal anything, this includes my pair of jumper cables, my Pioneer Head Unit and $4000 worth of stuff from other cars
4.)Go home and buy a 40, then preach about how rough it is to be black in Flint.
