chopper816 12-04-2002 11:30 PM

OUlioness01 12-04-2002 11:36 PM

but i'm not in school so it doesn't count.

LeslieAGD 12-04-2002 11:50 PM

Let's let it NOT snow! ...at least not til after exams. I commute to campus and have to deal with cleaning my car off and bad roads/traffic.

You are so lucky! In the 163 years my school has been open they have canceled classes THREE times!!! So if I want to miss class, it's going to be b/c I decided to be a slacker and skip.....and my parents pay way too much money for me to be doing that, so....:::sigh::: I guess I'll just have to deal with snow flying in my face as I walk to class. :( :D

aephi alum 12-05-2002 12:16 AM

No! Snow is bad! I get paid hourly ... too much snow = office closed = aephi alum doesn't get paid :(

Hootie 12-05-2002 12:17 AM

Yeah it snowed here and it was just a dusting...which I am mighty greatful for because I dislike driving in snow PERIOD!

OUlioness01 12-05-2002 12:27 AM

we have an inch and a half of snow!!!!!!!!! it's still snowing though though

Optimist Prime 12-05-2002 12:57 AM

Hey, get over it. This unpresendented at my school. Yay. Snowball fight.

KappaTarzan 12-05-2002 01:40 AM

unfortunately i live in good ol' new england, so even though it snowed liek a bastard and we were up from 12am-4am playing in the snow (and dyann broke her arm! ) there was still school.. blah.. inches of snow on the ground and STILL there was school.. wtf

queequek 12-05-2002 03:33 AM

LOL, I am so ready for snow now. Surprisingly, Iowa hasn't got any snow yet, but it'll change here in a month.
Hey, I have to agree with you .. snowball fight is awesome. Last year, Ash Ave (Greek rows: Pi Beta Phi, Delta Sigma Phi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Delta Delta Delta, FIJI, Farmhouse, Kappa Sigma, Theta Chi, Theta Delta Chi, Lambda Chi Alpha) had a HUGE snowball fight, and it was so much fun! Looking forward to the next fight :D

sigmagrrl 12-05-2002 09:09 AM

It's snowing like a bitch here in MD. We're supposed to get up to 12 inches (MMMMMM, 12 inches). I am considered an "essential" employee, so I HAD to come into work. I made my ex drive me to work, to make up for being a total bastard! LOL

SSS1365 12-05-2002 09:16 AM

Because of the nature of my job, I have to be at work even if there's a hurricane (um, not that we get many of those in Northern VA). So they make no exceptions for snow... I felt like an idiot this morning in my little car that does NOT do well in the snow, with a bunch of trucks and SUV's behind me... their drivers were probably wishing I'd get out of their way!

angelic1 12-05-2002 10:17 AM

I love the snow.. and if its going to be this cold.. its the only way I can stand it.

Well we still have classes today, of course, I think Virginia Tech is like FAB*SpiceySpice's school, bc class is never canceled. Though it was fun to go sledding on all the big hills around here.. we have the best hill on oak lane ("the greek community") so everyone was at our house last night sledding. Then I went on campus to see the annual first snowfall cadets vs. civilians snowball fight on the drillfield. This can get pretty huge and vicious. Enjoy the snow everyone :D

ChiOqt 12-05-2002 10:35 AM

Our classes are cancelled here also!!! The last time we had a snow day wa s two years ago....and on the last day of classes when all the papers, and tests, and quizzes happen. It can't get any better than this. What do you all do when you have snow days?:D

EagleChick19 12-05-2002 10:42 AM

It's snowing here in Central PA. But, my school hasn't cancelled classes.

xo_kathy 12-05-2002 10:59 AM

Cancelled classes? Puh-shaw! I went to school in Michigan, on the west side, so we got 'lake effect' snow from Lake Michigan. We'd have 2 feet drop overnight and just get in however we could. They did cancel classes my sophomore year, but that was because a cold front came through and it was -50 degrees outside and we couldn't walk to class without getting frost bite! I had a friend who went to Michigan Tech (way up north), and they had a square that normally took about 3-5 minutes to cross. In the winter, with snow piled up and blowing like crazy, it could take her like 25 minutes!!! That's some serious snow!!!

I also hate when people get all crazy driving because of a little snow. If people would not get so freaked out, there wouldn't be so many accidents. If you have anti-lock breaks, DON'T pump them! If you don't have anti-lock brakes, pump them SLOWLY! It's not that hard folks!!!!!

Although I am sure all of these smart GCers know how to use their brakes!! ;)

MoonStar17 12-05-2002 11:05 AM

LOL, that would be a funny sight. People around here don't even wear a light sweater when it's 60 degrees! :D

Dionysus 12-05-2002 12:46 PM

People can't drive worth a f*ck in winter weather up here.

To and from school, yesterday, I witnessed 2-3 accidents and about 10 fender benders. I was CTFU at them until I drove/slid up a curve and almost hit the traffic light.

SATX*APhi 12-05-2002 12:50 PM

NOOOOOO!!!!!!! I was teased last night by a friend in Ohio. This morning I wake up to an IM by my ex, who is Baltimore, saying that classes were cancelled b/c it was snowing. Now, on GC, I have to be tortured yet again? Ahhhhhh!!!!!!

texas*princess 12-05-2002 02:20 PM

CanadianTeke 12-05-2002 03:44 PM

Yeah it snowed here last night---just a few inches so nothing big. I think the last time classes were canceled was when the ice storm went through a few years ago and there was no power for like a week. They don't cancel classes up here very often, last week with the wind it was -26C (-15F) and all of our classes were still on. It gets so cold here that when they built the school they connected all of the buildings by tunnels so that once you are at school you don't need to go outside (it's great if you live in residence all winter you can stay indoors).

aephi alum 12-05-2002 06:08 PM

5 inches and counting here. The snow didn't start until around 8:30, so most schools opened as usual and then wound up having to close early. My office closed early, and after a painful drive home I am sitting and drinking hot chocolate :)

Why is it that some people think they can drive just as recklessly in snow as in sunny dry weather? Some idiot tailgated me halfway to work today, and on my way home I saw another idiot weaving in and out of traffic because, dammit, he was on a highway and therefore should be doing 60 despite the fact that said highway had not been plowed.

adduncan 12-05-2002 06:13 PM

I rememer having to ski to class a couple of days because of snow. Silber cancel classes for weather? Yeah, right!!!

Everyone should play in snow at least once. But I don't miss it THAT much. As I said before, no one had a heart attack shovelling heat out of the driveway.

Adrienne
(who prefers pretty, soft, white snow to that hideous, ugly clammy wet yuck pouring out of the sky right now :p )

Rio_Kohitsuji 12-05-2002 07:20 PM

WhhooHooo! Classes were canceled also today at old Rye-O, lol :) They only cancel when their is either terrorist attacks or when 90% of the professors can't make it in, heh.

Fun thing to do here: watch everyone wreck, lol. We have 2 main hills to get into the main campus, of course people like to speed so they climb the hill just to have to stop at the top due to the stop sign just to slide into the car behind them, ahh..so entertaining, lol.

DeltAlum 12-05-2002 07:35 PM

Grew up in Ohio. The rule when I was in high school was that the public schools wouldn't close unless the city busses couldn't run. That never happened. Those suckers are big.

I can't remember a single snow day.

None in college either.

I was amazed when we lived in Baltimore for a while -- people would almost literally panic when it started to flurry outside. Of course the city had essentially NO snow removal equipment, because it doesnt' snow much there.

Have since lived in Milwaukee, Detroit and Denver. Have seen a pretty fair amount of snow over the years.

I like the snow -- as long as it stays in the mountains. Which it generally does around here.

Dood - thats like living on the MOON.

Yeah, dont get that in this part of Texas. I grew up in snow, but now live in South Texas where kids remember the one tiem it snowed like our parents remember where they were when Kennedy got shot.

I have become too acclimated to the south texas winter. The high was 49 today. I am dying. Freezing my ass off. Seriously. I think the only place in the US for me to go to not be cold is eithe r Miami or the carribbean. St. Thomas, here I come.

I HATE cold weather. Get tears in your eyes walking to the damn car. Phuck that.

Yeah, true. But no one ever died of snow stroke. :p

sororitygirl2 12-06-2002 12:36 AM

I think it should only be allowed to snow in the mountains. Outside of the mountains, it should only be allowed to snow from 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve to 5 p.m. on New Years Day...

AXO_MOM_3 12-06-2002 01:17 AM

My children's school was cancelled yesterday before there was a snowflake. I was pretty irate about it too! They could have gotten half a day in since it did not start snowing until around lunchtime.
On a side note, for all those people who rant about the south states shutting down due to snow...the problem is that most of the time we don't get just snow, we get sleet and ice storms. Driving on sheer ice is a lot different than driving on snow!

ThetokenCanuck 12-06-2002 01:38 AM

Hey,

I go to school with CanadianTKE..Carleton in Ottawa-colder here than St. Petersburg. No joke. They had to get the police here to cancell classes during the ice storm. I guess thats what you get when you can skate to school!

Peaches-n-Cream 12-06-2002 01:52 AM

It snowed more today than it did all of last year. I'm dreaming of a White Christmas. :)

Noooooo!!!!!! I am soooooo, extremely jealous -- I'm sorry! Ahhh, what I would do to get to play in snow!!!

SATX*APhi 12-06-2002 02:05 AM

I have some friends who go to school on the east coast and am planning on going up in January / early February to visit. Do you think there will be any chance of it snowing? If it matters, they are in the DC / Boston area.

Peaches-n-Cream 12-06-2002 02:12 AM

I don't know. Maybe it will snow.

SATX*APhi 12-06-2002 02:18 AM

Sorry, I wasn't trying to turn you all into a weatherman/woman. :) I was just curious if it usually snowed during that time of year. Sorry! :)

snow in south

Or at least in VA, people freak out. No one can drive. They either drive the same way they normally do, shut them selves in, or try to show off their four wheel drives. Why not just slow down??? oh yeah, and they always, without fail, storm every supermarket they can find. In case its the apocylapse. There's no milk to be found anywhere, and there's like maybe half an inch.
