sorority expansion at New Mexico State Univ.
The panhellenic council at New Mexico State Univ. (Las Cruces, NM) has announced that it will be opening for expansion in spring 2003. Here's the link to the campus greek newspaper. (Page down to get to the expansion article)
http://www.nmsu.edu/~gogreek/gs/120102.pdf The presentations and selection will happen in spring 2003, colonization of the new group will be spring 2004. 5 NPC groups are currently on campus: Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta, Zeta Tau Alpha, Pi Beta Phi, and Chi Omega. |
Fantastic! Keep us posted!
|
OOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!
So exciting! |
How exciting! Kappa has a new chapter at Univ. of Central Florida, but another new chapter would be terrific!!!
|
The three NPC groups that will be presenting at New Mexico State are Delta Gamma, Kappa Delta and Alpha Sigma Alpha. The presentations will take place on April 22-24. The choice will probably be made by Friday, April 25.
Good luck to these three groups. The Greek system at NMSU is really great to work with. |
thanks so much for letting us know! go KD!
It seems like KD has been presenting everywhere lately........ |
Go DG!
Totally biased, but hey gotta show my support.

Good Luck to NMSU and Delta Gamma, Kappa Delta and Alpha Sigma Alpha! :)

Excellent organizations and good luck to all. Too bad Phi Mu wasn't up for it... it would be nice to have at least one western chapter.

Does anyone know how they choose who will be invited to present and potentially expand at a given campus? and who decides who will be allowed to come on campus?? i'm from a campus where greeks aren't recognized so would panhell decide? (if it was a sorority)

Here are links to the last three issues of the NMSU greek life newsletter with articles about the expansion.
My understanding is that all the presentations went very well and that no decision has been reached. http://www.nmsu.edu/~gogreek/gs/041403.pdf http://www.nmsu.edu/~gogreek/gs/042003.pdf http://www.nmsu.edu/~gogreek/gs/042703.pdf |
Thank you for the update!
Please let us know when the decision is made, which judging from the last article, should be within the next week or so! |

but to no avail has it been answered |
Well, in the case at NMSU, the panhellenic association (5 existing NPC chapters) voted to expand. They then sent out the information to NPC and then on to the 21 NPC groups not on campus. Many of the groups sent back information expressing interest in the process. The expansion committee then reviewed the packets of information from the NPC groups which responded and decided to which three of them to invite. The same committee saw the presentations and will make the desision on who to invite.
This question comes under the NPC "authorizing authority" provision. If no NPC groups are on campus, then the campus administration is the authorizing authority. If NPC groups are on campus then the panhellenic association is the authorizing authority and must vote to expand and issue the invitations for presentations. |
Thanks for letting us know! Yeah ASA!

The NPC Green Book is also the authoritative resource on the NPC expansion process. Ask your chapter's Panhellenic Delegate if you can borrow hers--she should have a copy. THe Green Book should be required reading for every NPC member! :) |
any news on this?
|
GO DG !!!!! CONGRATS !!!!
|
 Was DG selected? I couldn't find it on the website... Congrats to them if so!
|
Delta Gamma was picked to colonize! It's so exciting! YAY!

Hey AAgammagirl (gotta say, I love those Gamma Phi girls at U of Toronto...they're awesome and your house is gorgeous too).....my understanding is that the NPC has to put the word out to all 26 NPCs that a campus (in this case, NMSU) is open for expansion. Then those 26 groups will decide if they want to pursue it or not. They might not wish to if they feel that there is not sufficient alumnae support in the area to support the potential collegiate chapter, or if they are already committed to expansion projects elsewhere. But I guess what I don't get is, "What if (hypothetically) 5 groups decided that they wanted to present to NMSU?" How does it get narrowed down to the 3? I've been on this Greek Chat board for 3 solid years now, so I have a pretty good overview of the topics discussed and the "nitty gritty" of expansion is something that has not been elaborated on in any great detail? (therefore, please don't dismiss me with a "do a search") And how did the "winner" out of the 3 get chosen? Does it come down to Presentation Skills?  I'm sure that KD and ASA were professional and well-spoken in their presentations, so it would have to be more than just that.... I imagine that there must be some kind of criteria..I just don't know what it is? Maybe I'll get carnation to chime in on here...... |
CutiePie, usually the local Panhellenic Council looks over the extension packets that interested NPCs submit. They may look at a bunch of different things--philanthropy, programming, scholarships, fraternity-wide G.P.A, and the support that the inter/national headquarters would plan to provide to the colony. From there, the local Panhellenic decides which NPCs will be invited to make a presentation.
The NPCs that make presentations will go to the campus and visit with the Panhellenic and school officials. The presentation usually consists of a video or PowerPoint, and the Panhellenic will usually ask more in-depth questions about the NPC, and how they would implement their extension, recruitment, and installation plan. They want to see what the NPC has to offer the campus. After the presentations, the local Panhellenic will vote on which NPC they feel will be the best fit for the campus. It isn't an exact science by any means. Extension methods will also vary somewhat from the above when there is a local sorority petitioning. Usually the Panhellenic will take the local's preferences into account when deciding who to extend invitations to. |
greeklawgirl,
Thanks for a terrific explanation. That helps a lot! :) |
Our college sent an announcement to NPC and had it published in the January edition of their newletter that we wanted sororities to present. Seven contacted us and the administrators chose 4 groups to present. One backed out and 3 groups came in the spring.
Of our 2 locals, one chose Phi Mu and one group narrowly voted to stay local. (I think that Phi Mu will kick their butts in rush.)Several people will be leaving that second group to try to form another national and I have heard that a third group is now banding together to approach nationals. Since we have no Panhellenic, neither group would need Panhellenic permission to expand. |
Carnation ... great summary of what happens in an expansion.
In the case of NMSU, the collegiate panhellenic voted in the fall to expand and that information was communicated to the 21 NPC groups not on campus via NPC. Most of the 21 groups responded with interest and were sent packets of information about the campus and the greek system. The NPC groups looked over the expansion information then responded with materials of their own. The expansion committee ( made up of members of each of the 5 NPC chapters) reviewed all the materials that were sent by the NPC groups and decided which 3 groups to invite to come to campus to present. The presentations were made over 3 straight days in the middle of April to the expansion committee and anyone else who wanted to attend. After the presentations, the expansion committee met and voted on which goup to extend the bid to. If you're interested, previously in this thread I posted links to the NMSU greek life newsletter which talks about the process. |
Extension committee
Hey I just came across this post. Here I am on the extension committee at NMSU and I didn't even know that it was a topic of discussion. Interesting. It was a very hard and rewarding process. All three chapters that presented did very well and it was a very tough decision to make(we met every day for at least two hours a day for about a week). :(

and the winner was....
we're curiouser and curiouser....
:D |
Delta Gamma was picked - there is a thread over in the DG forum I'm too lazy to link to.

thanks...
predawn posting does that to one. as an nmsu alum, i say right on for dg. :D |
Congratulations to DG! It really is a shame, though, that all three couldn't have been chosen to colonize as they're all fantastic organizations. There's no way NMSU could have made a bad choice.

Ok ... I know this is old news but in a sense of closure here's the link to the announcement of Delta Gamma's selection in the NMSU Greek life newpaper GreekSpeak
