Are there any restrictions on how presents can be mailed to Canada?

Do the presents have to be unwrapped or can be wrapped?


The "official" websites don't detail and/or too confusing to find what page I need to look at.

i can only tell you about UPS restrictions (that's where i work - specifically with international packages)

for gift shipments, the packages may be wrapped, but must be placed in an "outer box" that can allow for shipping stickers and labels to be placed on the box.

also, specifically for canada - a shipment may be labeled 'gift' if each of the contents is valued under 60 dollars (US) this will be shown on the invoice that must be inclosed with each shipment descibing in detail the contents of the package.


(i know that sounds technical - it's hard not to talk in 'work speak')

i try not to mail anything to canada, its a weird upside down world where hockey is more loved than football and french is a popular language. NBL to all the Canadians on the board, im just messin with ya :p

Okay, you might be messing with us Canadians and I have a sense of humor, I'll laugh at all the Canadian jokes, don;t get me wrong. But for the love of God, please do not say that French is a popular language...I can handle all the stereotypes except this one...I can't speak for the other Canadians on this board but it really p***es me off when Americans think we all speak French. We don't...not even a majority of us speak French!!! Okay that's my rant...continue making fun of Canada if you must.

You have no idea how many people have asked me (when they found out I'm Canadian)...."So you must speak french then!"

Yes I speak french...it was mandatory for us to take it in school from grades 3-9. I also took it in gr. 10 and 11....but that was over 5 years ago!!! So I know the basics.....but I'm not fluent or anything!!!!

As for mailing things to Canada.....yes, they can be wrapped. You will have to fill out a declaration form of the contents of your package (which you will have to put "picture frame" or whatever you're sending) and the declared value of the package. There is a separate column on the form that you check to say it is a gift....this way the reciever does not have to pay duty/taxes on your package!

Warning though: it can get expensive to send packages to Canada. I send things often to my family in Nova Scotia....for example....last Christmas we mailed our Christmas gifts to them from Florida. Weight: 10lbs. Total cost: $52 USD.....that was the cheapest way too.....ground shipping.....10 days min!:( So be prepared for some high shipping costs!

i thought there was one providence (sp?) that french was spoken in more than english? i could be wrong but i thought i heard that somewhere

once again - only speaking for ups -

there is a form you must fill out stating exacly what you are shipping (picture frame)

there is another area to mark gift in order to save duty and other such fees.

however - if you are sending a picture frame i reccomend (require) that you remove the glass from the picture frame and wrap it seperatly in more secure packing in order to keep it from breaking.

French is spoken in Quebec. But, I think it's half English and half French.

French and English are both spoken in Quebec....but French is also very big in New Brunswick (English is the major language there though).

I *think* it is a law that 50% of everything must be in French in Quebec.....but I'm not totally sure on that!:)

Bill 101 (the sign law) in a nutshell - everything in Quebec must be in French: if need to have a sign in English, you must also have a sign in French which must be much bigger than the sign in english.

To kill the all Canadians speak french and english myth - I can barely speak any French - I took 13 years of the language - however I live in western Canada where everyone speaks english.

I took french from grade 4 to grade 9 (because it was mandatory) as soon as I could I dropped it like a on of bricks. I can speak very little french and I can read a bit, but frankly I could care less about the Quebecois and the french language...I have enough so that if I ever go to Paris I can get by because I doubt I'll ever be going to Quebec.

yup that's correct...except that now Quebec is a separate country, so it's no longer a province. I hope we're next, the country of Ontario - sounds good, doesn't it :)

One thing that I will always remember about Canada is that my U.S. high school's alma mater song was to the tune of O Canada! Why I have no idea since we are in the Southern U.S...guess someone loved the tune! :D

You'd think that mailing packages would be easy across our borders given that we do share such a large border, but NO ... our wonderful postal services need to make it hard - phooey.

The only French known in my part of Canada is French fries! :D

I'm not wild about it though. When I was a Girl Scout Camp Counselor for 2-3 summers, breakfast usually included at least 1 item that you could put syrup on.
