Majors
Yay! I thought of an academics topic! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
One of the fraternities at my school used to say "we have brothers from 30 majors" as a positive during rush. For your chapter and the others on your campus, do you have a diversity of majors, or do all the accounting majors end up in ABC, all the education majors in XYZ, etc? |
All majors end up getting spread around the campus at GMU, however, there are more CS majors than anything else on campus, so a huge chunk of the Tekes here are CS, DMIS, MIS or something like that.
------------------ ------------------ No funny squiggles, just bold letters: TKE |
We have a wide variety in mine. Some of the more popular ones are:
Everyone seems like CBA for some reason. Oh well, business just wasn't my thing. We save study notes and have test/quiz banks for future reference, so having a wide array of majors is very helpful! |
Since my GLO is a professional arts fraternity, most of our majors are in an arts field. We do, however, include all creative & performing arts, as well as their histories and therapies. Another thing is that our National Constitution & chapter bylaws read in a way that even non-majors can join. So we get a few people with arts minors or even math/science majors who are just really super active in the arts (like being in every single play, being in 2 or 3 music ensembles, etc.)
My chapter was at a campus with a big Conservatory of Music (big in comparison to the school), so nearly 1/2 our members were music majors of some sort. We also had a lot of communications/PR & education majors. With a dash of writing & art majors. ------------------ SilverTurtle Phi Beta Fraternity: National Professional Association for the Creative & Performing Arts |
Ours is mostly made up of golf management majors, mainly because the golf coach is our alumnus advisor and he incorages all the golfers to come up and take a look around, but we have some othrs as well, we have a little of all and thena whole bunch of GMs.
|
We have a really wide range of majors. There are a lot of elementary ed and communications majors, but the entire school is like that. We also have a chem major, a classics major, and a geology major (that's me).

ALL of our guys are engineering math or science, of course that's all my school offers http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif One guy is Electrical Engineering/Economics double major. Now, we do represent many of the majors offered at Rose: Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Chemical, and Civil Engineering, Math, Computer Science, Applied Optics, and of course Economics. The only ones we don't have are Physics and Chemistry as far as I can remember. The school webpage is down.
Our campus is a nice campus for Triangle, because it doesn't matter what the guys major is, he can still be in the fraternity. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ Steve Corbin Lambda Chi Alpha Theta Kappa Chapter Rose-Hulman Inst. of Tech. |
At my school all the sororities and frats are diverse and take just about any majore. The exception is sigma chi that has mainly business and engineer majors.
But, like i said, every other group is a melange of majors. ------------------ Delta Epsilon - Phi Sigma Sigma |
We have them all represented also . . .
|
Psych is very popular in my chapter, along with Econ. We have a lot of premeds, but everyone else is basically spread along the other disciplines.
|
Damn PHead, I wish when I was going to Scool I could have a major for diddeling in the dirt and and rolling in the Grass!
That is really awesome as most NON GOOFERS know waat it takes to make a Course work and run! There is money there, and any of you people who Know about Green Grass, George Toma, late of the KC Cheifs and many super bowls was just inducted into the NFL Hall Of Fame! ------------------ Tom Earp LX Z#1 Pittsburg State U. I'm majoring in Communications, AKA the sorority major....it's about 80% female (you definitely don't meet guys in your classes), and actually has quite a few sorority girls, which is great for study groups!
|
Ohmygosh, we have everything...
Just a sampling here, it's crazy!: Architecture, Music, Anthropology, Engineering, Art, Dance, History, English, Bio (pre-med), Hotel and Restaurant Mgmt., Radio/TV Broadcasting, PR, Math, education, etc. etc. There are only a few people in the chapter that actually share a major and most of them are education or marketing or something. It's pretty cool http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
At my chapter, most of my sisters are in:
-Social Work -Education (either Special Ed/Elementary Ed) -Health/PE |
Quote:
My house has a lot of safety education majors... Then a lot of Comm majors. Probably the same # of Criminal Justice Majors.. From there on it's pretty diverse. |
Many of my sisters are Comm majors; a few are elementary ed. as well. The other majors run from journalism, art history, psychology, govt./politics and criminology. We don't have too many girls who are majoring in sciences or even business, despite the fact that there are many Greeks who are business majors at my school.
|
We're new on campus and only have 6 members, but our majors are diverse:
Liberal Studies/Elementary Educ. Spanish Educ. w/minor in ESL and Ethnic Studies Religous Studies/Anthropology Cellular/Mollecular Biology Sociology/Social Work Business |
Here are a few from this year:
Studio Art Molecular Biology Business Marketing Secondary Education Communications Biology/Pre-Med Elementary Education |
Since we attend a polytechnic university, we have a lot of engineers, but we also have a lot of AgBusiness and Business majors, too.
http://www.chops.org/demographics.php |
Some popular majors for my sorority:
Psychology Organizational Communication Advertising/Public Relations Education Marketing Accounting Biology |
We have brothers in quite a few majors. A sampling:
Business Graphic Design Architecture Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering Construction Engineering Computer Science As you can see, we are pretty heavy on engineering and technical stuff, but we have quite a variety. |
During my undergrad years we had a pretty good mix of pre-laws, pre-meds, economics and business admins, a few historians, a few engineers, a couple of math majors, a couple of chems, and a couple of classics majors. We had a fair number of guys who did double majors because of the way departments were set up. Economics was taught in the College of Business and PoliSci was taught in Arts and Sciences. By managing your electives you could get a double major and joint degree without having to load on lots of extra courses. Unless you were into hard sciences you might typically end up with concentrations like a joint BA/BBA in Economics, PoliSci and History or Business Management and Sociology, or Marketing and Languages. I understand that this is fairly common at schools in the South and in the Mid-West but not as prevalent elsewhere.
|
Here's a series of majors our brothers are involved in:
Biology (Pre-med concentration) Elementary Education Speech Pathology Public Health Nursing Occupational Therapy English History French Criminal Justice Psychology Construction Management Business Computer Science Pre-law Varied??? Yeah, I think so. |
We had quite a diverse group. Some that I remember quite a few people majoring in are:
Nursing (mine) Business Stuff (marketing and accounting) Hotel/Restaurant/Hospitality Psych Education Sports Med. Chemistry (that's just torture to me) Biology Life Science Speech Pathology Theater/Arts Journalism |
Communication, Journalism, and Political Science tend to be popular majors for our sorority...although, like everyone here, our sisters also major in a variety of things. These are the majors I could think of off the top of my head.
Political Science (mine) Pharmacy Spanish Psychology Economics Communication Theatre Arts Mathamatics Journalism American Studies History English Biology |
Everyone starts in a different major, but then it seems like they become speech majors.....

Generally, majors are pretty much spread around though my chapter just happens to be the music major sorority. I would say that members of my chapter comprise over half the choir!
|
In SAI, we have 10 members. Of those, we have:
-- 1 Instrumental Music Education major (that's me!) --3 Vocal Music Education majors --1 Vocal Performance major --1 Music major --1 Theater major --1 Early Childhood Education major --1 Marketing major --1 whose major I can't remember. :D It's not music though. Obviously we have more music majors because we are a music GLO, but we have diversity too. :D |
Know what's random? My big sis is a dance major -- INCREDIBLY talented, and her biggest dream is to teach dance to kids.
My major is forensic science. My biggest dream is to cut up dead people. (Bluntly put, but, well, you know.) Strangely enough -- we get along SO WELL. The sorority's really the only thing we have in common. So what's the deal?! Greek love! ~ Jacquelyn. |
