Ohio State/Michigan

Anybody going down to Columbus for the big game? Only 12 days, 3 hours, 23 minutes to go!

Here is where I will be :)
Hineygate

Kevin 11-11-2002 11:00 AM

Go Blue!

IowaHawkeye 11-11-2002 11:09 AM

can't be there... but i'm praying that michigan runs all over them

PM_Mama00 11-11-2002 11:40 AM

I think a bunch of us are going down to one of the guy's houses in Ohio to watch it. Yay! GO BLUE!!!!!

SilverTurtle 11-11-2002 12:57 PM

I live in Columbus, very near OSU campus, and I try to avoid homegame Saturdays. :p
I don't need my car set on fire, thank you. lol.

But if I can meet up with some GCers it might be worth the risk. :D

AOX81 11-11-2002 01:35 PM

SilverTurtle, we'll be over at Hineygate...and so will everyone else and their mom. We're all staying at the Embassy Suites. We figured it was far enough away to avoid cars being overturned because of the Michigan plates on my friends cars, lol.

Thrillhouse 11-11-2002 04:46 PM

I am a Mich fan but I could care less about the game. I hope OSU wins, than gets crushed by Miami just to show the truth to everyone who has given me crap about me saying how weak the big ten is year in and year out. If Ohio St loses, who does the big ten have to send to a bcs game? Iowa?

Ok I hate to break it to you, but Iowa really isn't that bad. Best QB in the country, best rush defense, one of the best kickers, and ranked 6th. seriously, get a little conference pride.

chopper816 11-11-2002 05:40 PM

i really want michigan to win, not only b/c i like them, but if ohio state loses, that could really help texas in the bcs!!!!!!

Thrillhouse 11-11-2002 06:23 PM

Chopper- It will be interesting to see who is ahead of who, Texas or Oklahoma.

Iowahawkeye- Oklahoma beats Iowa st 49-3, Iowa loses to the same unranked Iowa St team, than people wonder why I have no big ten pride. Best qb in the country? Dorsey, Grossman, Gesser, Leftwich, and Palmer all might have a thing or two to say about that.

ND may be more appealing than Texas to bowl officials

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Ivan Maisel
ESPN.com

If the standings remain as they are -- and of course, they won't, but let's pretend they will -- Texas can forget not only the Fiesta Bowl, but the other BCS games as well.

Here's how the BCS bowls will look.
Fiesta: Miami vs. Ohio State
Rose: Iowa vs. Washington State
Orange: Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma
Sugar: Florida State vs. Georgia

Tyrone Willingham and ND may end up squeezing the 'Horns out of the BCS bowl mix.
If Miami is ranked first, then the Orange Bowl will declare the Big East champion as its host team. The 'Canes would be put in the Fiesta and then the Orange would get first pick among the at-large teams. The Orange Bowl wants the Irish even if they lose to USC and fall to 10-2.

"We have to put asses in seats. Notre Dame will fill us up," Art Hertz, a past president of the game, said Saturday in Knoxville. "The way the system is now, if we don't sell our tickets, we're in the hole."

That's no small consideration. The Orange Bowl ticket this year is $100.

The Rose, which would lose Ohio State to the Fiesta, would then get second pick and happily take Iowa. The Hawkeyes are not only a top-five team, but their selection would keep the Big Ten in the game. That keeps a happy marriage between the Tournament of Roses and the Big Ten.

Though Florida State has earned a reputation for not travelling very well, the Sugar won't care who is playing the SEC champion as long as Georgia, which hasn't been to New Orleans since 1982, LSU or Auburn is in the game. All three schools would fill the Superdome to the roof.

Iowa lost to ISU early in the season - Iowa lost that one by our own stupid mistakes, ISU didn't beat us.

Oklahoma just lost to an unranked Texas A&M team - who cares if they beat ISU 49-3. We at least lost to a ranked team, when we were unranked.

If youre looking at QB statistics, Banks ranks right up there with Dorsey, Grossman, Gesser, Leftwich & Palmer. The stats don't lie, that boy has done magic with the Iowa offense.

Kevin 11-11-2002 08:03 PM

Not making excuses for Oklahoma but you apparently don't have a concept of how difficult it is to win AT Kyle Field. Someone from College Station should be able to back me up on that one.

Oklahoma should roll through the rest of the season. The Big 12 title game should get them past Texas in the rankings.

Thrillhouse 11-11-2002 09:22 PM

Whats up with wazzou being #3 in the bcs? Wouldn't it be funny if there was a rose bowl (pac 10 vs. big ten) matchup that was in the fiesta bowl? The rose bowl would be garbage then:rolleyes:

Iowahawkeye- Your hawkeyes are 8th in the bcs, the worst ranking of all the one loss teams.:D ;) :p

thats ok, i'm not concerned. we only have one game left then we can sit back at watch Michigan stomp all over OSU, USC stomp all over ND, and OU and texas battle it out for the big 12 title. Any way you slice it, I'm probably spending new years in pasadena :)

OU and Texas can't play eachother for the Big 12 title. They're both Big 12 South. Most likely if trends continue, OU will see Colorado or K-State in the Big 12 Championship. Texas can't go if both teams only have 1 loss because OU beat Texas.

OSU will kick Michigan's ass

Oh we will definately win! OSU is so awesome and we are undefeated. But unfortunately I will be sober and at work that day at Damon's as a good lil' hostess. Come visit me its the one on Olentangy. I just pray that my car doesn't get overturned that day.
Go Buckeyes! 12-0 #1 in the BCS.

AOIIalum 11-18-2002 09:03 AM

I think I'm moving out of the Columbus Metro area next Saturday :D I really could care less who wins, as long as Kentucky beats Tennessee on the 30th!

As long as your car doesn't have Michigan plates I would say that you are fine. :) Is Damon's very far away from Roosters?

I really hope that you're referring to OSU fans doing this. Either that, or you're thinking of Michigan State. Wolverines have more class than that.

I'm just referring to people who riot in general and think that shit is funny...not either school...i really don't think it would be Michigan b/c they probably wouldn't stay here long enough to overturn our cars

Go Buckeyes! 12-0 #1 in the BCS Baby!

Looks like it needs to be added to this forum as well...

BCS, College Football on
Verge of Complete Disaster

By NORMAN CHAD
AOL Exclusive

This is the time of season in which the BCS reaches a boiling point. And if either Miami (Fla.) or Ohio State loses before the end of the year -- a virtual certainty, my friends -- well, then, the BCS will boil over.

For we will have about 125 college football teams with one defeat, and even if America happens to be at war against Iraq, the BCS brouhaha will overshadow any Baghdad bombs.

Naturally, the whole thing will be decided by a computer.

Before we go any further, let's go over The Big Picture one more time, with feeling:

Should there be a national championship playoff format in college football? Yes.

Do we absolutely need a national championship playoff format in college football? No. (What we absolutely need is health care reform. And shorter lines at the post office.)

Also, before we go any further, please remember:

The BCS is pretty much just BS with a middle initial.

Anyway, absent of a playoff system -- which, incidentally, would not end all the current arguing and shouting, it would simply redirect the arguing and shouting to who's in and who's out -- we are left with the wonder and rapture that is the Bowl Championship Series.

The BCS rankings, as many of you sadly know, are a compilation of the average of the coaches poll and the Associated Press media poll, the average of seven computer evaluations, plus factoring in the variables of strength of schedule, quality victories and total number of defeats.

In other words, it would be easier to chart Drew Barrymore's relationship arcs than it would be to dissect the BCS formula.

The first BCS problem here are the human elements -- who can trust coaches or sportswriters?

Coaches have built-in biases, plus they don't watch too many games.

Sportswriters also have built-in biases, plus they're generally eating while watching too many games.

So when either group tries to tell me which are the nation's top teams, I'm inclined to tune these folks out and tune in to 'Father Knows Best' on Nick at Nite.

(This would be as good a time as any to address the angry e-mails I've received about AOL's own college football ranking, the mysterious and maligned Couch Slouch Eight. Some of the irate mob are missing the point. First and foremost, I'm just trying to have fun. Secondly, I'm just trying to show people that no one can really know who No. 1 or No. 2 or No. 22 is -- we're talking about teams in different parts of a very large country, facing vastly dissimilar schedules and usually not playing each other. It's like trying to decide if Catherine Deneuve or Catherine Zeta-Jones is a better actress -- well, maybe that's a bad example -- or if the Big Mac or the Whopper is a better burger. We all have varying tastes and opinions, and unless the teams or actresses or burgers in question meet in a postseason playoff -- preferably at a neutral field, screen or grill -- it's all conjecture and hot air.)

The second BCS problem here is the inhuman elements -- who can trust a computer, or don't you all remember the HAL 9000 in '2001: A Space Odyssey'?

Jeff Sagarin, my butt.

(These computer programmers are largely rumpled madmen sitting in the basement of their parents' home, alternating between reading data printouts and spitting out sunflower seeds.)

If we went by computer, the New York Mets would never get a chance to win the 1969 World Series and the Baltimore Ravens would never make it to Super Bowl XXXV. If we went by computer, the incomparable Steve Buscemi would be working as a street mime outside a Tallahassee, Fla., dinner theater.

Computers are good for two things -- Tetris and Minesweeper.

I would trust the bastard child of a personal injury lawyer and an insurance claims adjuster before I'd trust a computer.

(Computers? Computers? Please. I'll tell you how unreliable they are: A computer dating service led to my first marriage.)

Besides, on any given day a computer could have a virus, and the next thing you know, Cornell is ranked No. 3 in the nation.

So when Ohio State loses to Michigan this Saturday, or when Miami loses to Pittsburgh, Syracuse or Virginia Tech sometime soon, the nation will turn to Gateway and Dell, and, believe you me, somebody's computer server is going to crash trying to figure out the Bowl Chaos Series possibilities.

Me? I don't need a computer. I have a microwave and a blender -- and the firm belief that Duquesne is No. 1.

The Couch Slouch Eight

With Montana becoming the third consecutive No. 1 team in the Couch Slouch Eight to tumble from the unbeaten ranks, the inevitable finally transpired -- Duquesne now occupies the top spot. Are the Dukes Fiesta Bowl-bound? Of course not. More likely, they will be headed for the ECAC Bowl, despite recording four shutouts this season and outscoring their final five opponents 237-17.

Congratulations to running back Ian Smart of No. 4 C.W. Post, who scored four times in the Pioneers' 35-16 victory over Pace to set an NCAA career all-division record with 94 touchdowns.

Miami (Fla.) remains in its entrenched No. 8 position, after several lackluster practices during its bye week.

This week's Couch Slouch Eight:
1. Duquesne (11-0)
2. Dayton (10-1)
3. Ohio State (12-0)
4. C.W. Post (11-0)
5. Boise State (10-1)
6. Rutgers (1-9)
7. Miami (Ohio) (7-4)
8. Miami (Fla.) (9-0)

Others receiving votes: Maryland, Culinary Institute of America, McDonald's Hamburger University.

Heisman Watch

Our Heisman Trophy favorite, Hawaii's Timmy Chang, completed 35 of 64 passes for 369 yards as the Warriors won at Rice, 33-28. Chang had to shake off jet lag, the time-zone change and "mainland malaise," not to mention it was windy and chilly in Houston, plus, let me tell you, I've never done a good day's work myself in that God-forsaken city, so it was a steady, if unspectacular, Saturday for the sophomore sensation.

Meanwhile, our Heisman Trophy co-favorite, San Diego State's Adam Hall, was carted off the field with a concussion in the second quarter of the Aztecs'
49-21 loss to Colorado State, the victim of a facemask by linebacker Drew Wood. Hall had completed 11 of 15 passes for 120 yards and probably was en route to another 500-yard day. For the season, he has completed 272 of 452 passes for 3,253 yards and 17 touchdowns. "And the Heisman goes to Adam Hall!" Boy, that's got a good ring to it.

I hope my (80 plus year old) father has the sense to stay off the Columbus streets. But I wouldn't bet on it.

What if Ohio State loses, than Washington State gets into the only college game that matters in January? There would be some pissed off Buckeye fans who would feel that they should be there since they beat Wazzou.

Well it still remains to be seen that Washington State and Miami will go undefeated. They still have games left.

OU might get the boost it needs in strength of schedule if it wins out the rest of the season (they have an extra game vs Colorado for the Big 12 championship if they go on to beat Tex Tech and OK State).

Well that would suck for OSU but they would be enjoying the Capital One Bowl b/c they wouldn't even have won their Conference and therefore lose a Rose Bowl berth as well as an NC one.

AOX - you are way excited about this game, aren't you ;) who are you cheering for? michigan?

AOX81 11-20-2002 02:56 PM

Actually I'm not an Ohio State or a Michigan fan. I'm a Michigan State fan :) I'm just excited because 10 of my friends from Michigan are coming down to Columbus to party with me! I'm so excited to see them!! My husband is a Buckeye fan but I won't hold it against him. :)

DeltAlum 11-22-2002 01:31 PM

OK, I grew up in Columbus and lived in Detroit for awhile, so I try to keep this game in perspective and walk the middle of the road.

But this article is pretty darn funny...

ANN ARBOR--Let's make one thing perfectly clear. We love our little Buckeye friends. They're proud, passionate people, even when sober. This is the greatest time of their lives down in Columbus, what with "Jackass: The Movie" opening to rave reviews and the Buckeyes going 12-0.
We're not here to spoil the fun. We're here to help our addled neighbors preserve some dignity. It'll hurt at first -- like when they crush empty beer cans against their foreheads -- but they'll be glad they did it.
Here's the deal. For Ohio State's own good, for the pride of the Big Ten and out of respect for a storied rivalry, Michigan must beat the Buckeyes on Saturday. By doing the right thing and winning for the 37th time in 39 meetings, the Wolverines would prevent a few truly humiliating acts:
1. There would be no need to pepper-spray giddy OSU fans, although arrangements could be made for those who enjoy it.
2. OSU graduates wouldn't be distracted by the national-title talk and could get back to the important business of trucking goods across America.
3. The Buckeyes would be spared a trip to the Fiesta Bowl, where they're currently scheduled to lose to Miami by seven touchdowns.
Please, bear with me. In no way is this an attempt to disrespect OSU, which by every conceivable measure is the worst 12-0 team not named BYU in the history of college football. To show we're being fair, U-M is the worst 9-2 team in the history of organized football, not counting last year's Chicago Bears.
Now, I know this stance won't exactly be embraced in Columbus, where adept OSU students recently mastered use of the $%#@& buttons on the school's computer. But this is best for all parties.
A U-M victory would guarantee the Big Ten three top-10 teams, yet none would have to humble themselves in the title game. In addition, I fear the swilling Buckeye faithful again are losing perspective. Say what you will about John Cooper, but he knew how to keep them under control. If Buckeye fans ever got too excited, he'd slap together a quick 28-0 loss to U-M.
It was healthier that way. Now you have this Jim Tressel guy wearing his snappy little outfits, talking tough and changing locks on the doors so Cooper can't get in to address the team. At least Cooper understood the rivalry's tradition. U-M uses the game to salvage its season; OSU uses it to honor some chubby tuba player who staggers out to dot the i, earning three credit hours in advanced penmanship.
Tressel just doesn't get it. The winner of this game isn't supposed to get a major reward like a Rose Bowl bid anymore. The prize now is the Outback Bowl. From blooming roses to a bloomin' onion -- woo-hoo!
No one gets hurt this way. No one gets pepper-sprayed. No one gets obsessed, like the radio station in Columbus that broadcasts U-M's games.
But enough about the rivalry. Time to analyze the game:
Standard OSU possession -- Run. Run. Run. (Maurice Clarett helped off field with arm dangling.) Punt.
Standard U-M possession -- Run. Near interception. Run. Punt.
Should be a classic. For everyone's well-being -- and for Fiesta Bowl TV ratings -- U-M should do the Buckeyes a favor. It'll be painful, but you only hurt the ones you respect.
Pick: U-M, 14-11.

As I mentioned to my sister-in-law in Detroit this morning, "Is there a game today? Colorado doesn't play Nebraska until next week."

Besides, out here "M" is for Missouri, OSU is Oklahoma State and OU is Oklahoma.

Just a little persepective on things.

Just keep ahead, it doesn't matter how much you win by!
