HELP! Is there a way you can join a house after you DA?!

I DAed last year from my sorority basically because I made the wrong choice and we got iniated so quickly. I tried to make myself like it, but it just didnt happen. I am kinda feeling left out not being a part of the greek system and I would love to join another house~but from what I understand once you drop a house you're done. Is there anyway around this?! Or am I locked out for life?

DeltaSigStan 11-05-2002 02:01 AM

Depends, I depledged Alpha Psi Rho, waited a year, then joined Delta Sig. Best move I ever made. I think as long as you dont join a GLO in the same council as the one you dropped you're fine. APsiRho was USFC and DSP is IFC so I was ok.

smr78 11-05-2002 02:09 AM

I was an AXO, and I was initiated. From what I know, I do think all the sororites at my school are under panhellenic.

josh8o 11-05-2002 02:50 AM

if you were initiated then you are f***ed. but only if it is panhellenic, i think. if you find a local i think you can go for it. i know there has got to be someone on here who is more informed.

This is correct. You can never join another Panhellenic sorority.

That is, an NPC sorority. You can find those listed at www.npcwomen.org. If you have NPHC, or any local/mulitcultural GLOs at your school, you could look into those. But if you initiated, and you only have NPC groups, then there's not much you can do.

AchtungBaby80 11-05-2002 10:29 AM

Was it the actual sorority you didn't like, or just your chapter?

NPHC groups will not accept members initiated into an NPC group.

This isn't completely true, Barbara. Some NPHC groups have such stipulations in their by-laws and constitutions, some don't. The NPHC as a governing body doesn't observe this rule.

Yeah, from the impression I recieved, it is more of a unwritten rule than an actual concrete one.

Well, smr78, if you are planning on transferring in the future, tell the new folks you've never been a part of another sorority, better yet don't bring it up at all, it may make them suspicious. Just hope that they don't do a thorough background check (some don't).

But, I wouldn't go there, it isn't worth it. Perhaps you can try a local or special interest GLO at your school, it won't be the same, but you should have fun.

Since you were initiated into an NPC sorority, then you cannot join another NPC group. However, if there are local sororities or service sororities at your school, then you have the option to join one of them.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with your chapter, and I hope that you are able to find a local or service organization that is a good fit for you. :) Good luck!

From the NPC Website...

III. The Panhellenic Compact (Excerpted statements of membership eligibility)
A woman who is or who has ever been an initiated member of an existing NPC fraternity shall not be eligible for membership in another NPC fraternity. (1)

My understanding of this is that NPC does have a set policy on being initiated into more than one NPC group.

OK, so the conclusion is:

If you were EVER in a NPC group, you can NEVER join another one.

smr78, your only options are to a) join a service fraternity, music fraternity, or professional fraternity, b) join a local, or c) CREATE a local.

I’m very sorry to hear that your Greek experience was not what you expected. It must have been a difficult decision for you to leave your sorority entirely.
As you have already gathered from the other posts, admission into another NPC sorority is prohibited, but I do hope you strongly consider the other suggestions made. As already suggested, you can look into the Local sororities, if there are some, on your campus. I have to admit that I had very little experience or knowledge of local groups until I came here to Greek Chat, but my respect and admiration for these groups has grown immeasurably and I think that they provide a wonderful sisterhood experience.
Also, Greek letter service organizations are also a fantastic option, please take this suggestion seriously as well. These organizations accomplish so much within their communities and also provide that "familial" bond.
Beta Sigma Phi may be another, really amazing option for you. It is my understanding, although I may be wrong about this, that an NPC membership, active or revoked, does not impede membership in this group. If you are eligible I suggest you look at their website and really consider membership within their sisterhood.
good luck with your search for your home,
violets

When did she say it was NPC?

greeklawgirl 11-05-2002 02:20 PM

She mentioned her former affiliation in a prior post.

Thanks Everyone!

Thanks everyone for all your help~even though it is a bit disheartening! Oh well~I guess I will just make the best of it and kinda become a surrogate member of some of my friends houses. I just hate feeling left out of the social scene~and I feel like guys in frats would only want a sorority girl. I don't want to second guess myself~because I know my previous chapter is not where I want to be, I just wish I knew more about the permanence of my decision. Thanks again for all you help!

Have you tried contacting your former GLO's national headquarters with your question?

pinkyphimu 11-05-2002 08:53 PM

you should check with the national office. you may be able to reaffiliate as an alum. i don't know if you can, but it never hurts to ask. i understand that your chapter wasn't right for you, but if you do feel a connection to the organization then there may be a way to still be a part of it. besides, the alum groups are made up of many different women!
