Which would come first?
A woman or a non-white president?
|
I think a woman. Maybe that's wishful thinking... How would the nation's grumpy old men feel about a woman wearing the pants? And I'm speaking from a state that has not yet had a female governor.
The best way to get started on that is to actually elect a ticket that has a woman as VP. And who knows: if Liddy Dole wins her Senate bid in Kansas, she'll be a major contendor. Hillary Clinton already is one. So's Christine Todd Whitman, governor of New Jersey. We'll keep our eyes out. |
I'd vote for a man of any color before I ever voted a woman for President.
|
May I ask why you'd never vote for a woman?
And I hate to break it to you, babe, but there are more women than men in this country, and more women vote than men. And I'm sure that even more women would get out to the polls if one of our gender were a candidate. Also, there are still plenty of people in this country who would never vote for a nonwhite candidate-- far more of them, I'd imagine, than those who wouldn't vote for a woman. |

Well, I'm going to answer a question with a question then, why not a Woman of color as President before both other categories? |

I guess I was thinking either a lady of any race or a gentleman who is not white.
But now that you mention it, nonwhite women really do have the double whammy-- they're "coloured" and they're female. Personally, I would love to see a nonwhite woman as president. Unfortunately, I doubt it will happen in my lifetime. |

i think a non-white president has more likelyhood of happening than a woman president. i personaly do not care, and would vote for either. but i just think there are some non-white men out there that are on their way to the white house.

Why do you want Dole to win? Only cause she is a woman?
Do you know anything about Erskine Bowles, the other canidate? |

No, darling, this isn't Britain, 1962. That's why I put it in scare quotes.
Yes, I know a lot about Erskine Bowles. I followed his career as an advisor during the Clinton administration, and I don't like his politics or his leadership style. I'm not a fan. I would never vote for anyone because of his race or gender. That's just plain dumb. I have many friends who share the same demographics as I with whom I disagree wholeheartedly. I agree with Elizabeth Dole's politics, and I admire her leadership style. That is why I would vote for her. |
Boy, do we have a loooong way to go.....

I personally believe we'll have an African American male president before a female.

Colin Powell (R) vs Hillary Clinton (D) in 2004. That's my prediction..

Given that we haven't ever even had a Jewish VP - it wasn't all that long ago when it was a big deal that we elected a Catholic president - I think the day we get a president that isn't white, male and Christian is a lot longer off than we'd like to think.

I vote for my party ticket (for government things) and so generally it's whomever they throw out as a candidate. The only time I'd consider going to a different candidate would be based on their values, morals, and issues and whether or not I felt they were similar to my party's (or my personal beliefs). So race and sex don't necessarily play a part in my decision.
HOWEVER, I will say when it comes to the little things that people run for office here in my hometown, such as school board and director for the power plant (little things)...if I don't know who the candidates are, I generally will vote for a woman. I don't know what that is, but I suppose it goes back to what my mother once told me about how she votes. |

What type of smiley will we see next? |
If ANYONE of color ever made it into office, they would be assassinated. Therefore, I will say a woman.
|
This is a tough one... I think probably a woman will come first though.

I agree with librasoul - as much as it sucks, if an African-American or other person of color even RAN they would probably get assassinated by some of the racist jagoffs out there. In that frame of mind, better a "little lady" that they can make themselves believe is being controlled by their husband than someone of another race.
I think this is why Colin Powell's wife asked him not to run. |

same would probably hold true for an African American... I live in California, so its easy for me to think the whole country is as liberal as CA, and, in fact, most of the West Coast is...but... sigh... what in God's name does color or gender have to do with one's ability to run this country? NOTHING. But not everyone is as sensible as the fine people on GC... |
