Your organizations pin

I am curious, with all the pins on ebay available (at high prices!), it made me wonder: How much did you pay for your pin and what is considered average for your group? I know some groups do not offer different varieties of pins, but others offer all sorts of different jewels. So:

1)does your group offer different varieties?
2) how much was yours
3) did you get the standard or the upgrades?
4) is there a "pressure" in your chapter to get the more expensive ones?

I sound like a used car salesman!Thanks!:D

Kevin 11-04-2002 02:30 PM

Yep. Many different varieties. Here's where you can see a few.

Masters of Design Website

And here's MY badge.
http://www.mastersofdesign.com/image...t/img1-724.jpg

It cost me $179 plus my chapter guard which wasn't all that much...

The standard badge is included in your initiation costs. So you might say it's free...

There is no pressure in my chapter to upgrade. In fact I'm the only one that's done it. Others intend to but haven't had the money.

KillarneyRose 11-04-2002 02:33 PM

Delta Zeta Sorority

1)does your group offer different varieties?
The only option we are offered is the choice between a Tiffany (6 prong) setting or a flush (gold surround) setting for the diamond in the flame.

2) how much was yours
$90.00 including single letter guard.

3) did you get the standard or the upgrades?
We don't have upgrades

4) is there a "pressure" in your chapter to get the more expensive ones?
N/A

OUlioness01 11-04-2002 02:39 PM

our pin prices range from approximately $40 to approximately $500 (?) depending on the type you get. mine is outlined in pearls and has a ruby at each tip of the quatrafoile. I think it cost $142. You can get a variety of different jeweled settings. I htink the highest prices are for diamonds. there isn't any pressure to get a more expensive one in my chapter. most get the least expensive pin.

FuzzieAlum 11-04-2002 02:43 PM

I don't think we have one that's standard. The "plain" gold-filled badge is $28; the sterling is the same. They're both equally popular, depending on what metal you like.

When I was initiated, you could also order a 10k or 14k (I don't remember which) plain gold badge, which they don't seem to have any more. I think that's a big shame, because if you're going to have your badge for life, you don't want "gold filled" forever - it's a fancy way of saying "plated," which means it won't look nice after a while.

The 10k with three pearls is $110. This one isn't very popular because lots of people think it looks weird. The crown pearl (15) badge is $145. You can replace any number of pearls with diamonds, but I'm not sure what that costs. Usually girls will get one diamond on the point, but I know at least one former national president was given an all-diamond pin as a gift.

Ah, back in the day, you could also get white gold, with or without pearls, and the number of pearls on the crown set was 21 instead of 15.

At least in my chapter there was no pressure to get a certain badge. Girls sometimes wanted nicer ones than they could afford, but that was their personal desire.

All I really want is a crown pearl chapter guard to make me happy. I used to have a plain one I gave to my little. Well, that and a sapphire lavalier. And the honor key I never ordered. And .... argh, must close checkbook!

Betarulz! 11-04-2002 02:44 PM

1) There are a couple of different varieties: A president's badge (usually stays in the chapter and is passed down through the years). There is also a larger option, as well as one with more detail work and chasing around the outer edge.

2) Standard Badge is part of initiation fee. You can get a cubic zirconium and gold plated badge for $10.

3)Because the chapter orders the initial badge for you, there is no option for getting the one with the diamond and 14K version, or the chased one

4) There is no pressure, b/c I think that most guys don't know that their badge isn't real gold or diamond. I know that if I have $$$ left at the end of this school year I'm going to buy an "upgrade"

Glitter650 11-04-2002 04:03 PM

1)There are two types of Phi Sig Badge... the Plain one is just the gold sphinx head with sapphire eyes... on a base with our letters in blue enamel (looks kinda like George washington wearing sunglasses) The jeweled version is the sphinx head mounted on a pyramid with three sapphires in each corner of the pyramid.

2) I'm not really sure how much they each cost because it's included in new member fees, so the chapter orders them I think it's like 70 or something for the plain and maybe like 2 something for the jeweled version, but I'm not sure about that at all....

3) since our chapter orders them there's really never an option given to get the jeweled one, so everyone just uses the one they get from the chapter. :D

AOX81 11-04-2002 04:16 PM

Alpha Theta Chi Pin

They used to cost $23.32 but we found some place that will make them cheaper...$15.15.

aephi alum 11-04-2002 07:41 PM

AEPhi doesn't offer different varieties. My pin was $75, plus $35 for a two-letter chapter guard (I think the one-letter guards were $25, and of course you can get the pin without the guard).

aprilxo 11-04-2002 09:24 PM

I think the standard pricing on ours was 60 for silver w/pearl, 74 for gold w/pearl... and $600 something for the diamond version... I don't know anybody who's got that one :D

Tom Earp 11-04-2002 10:46 PM

LXA Badges have yellow gold, white gold extra.

There is a plain one no gems, all the way up to $210.00 depending on the stone combonations!

lambdachi.org

Mine is white gold, with seed pearls in the cresent and saphires in the Lambda. I also have a yellow gold, seed pearls , rubys with diamonds at the points of the Lambda. Both of these have Chapter Guards in respective gold coloring with pearls.

I have one taht I paid $175.00 on a site. I think I have @ 12 toatal that will go to my guys at the chapter.

sororitygirl2 11-04-2002 11:01 PM

1) My group offers different varieties (they range from $75 for the standard to over $1,000).

2) Mine was $250 and my guard was about $150.

3) Mine was an upgrade... 14K and jewels and such.

4) There isn't pressure, per se, to get the more expensive ones but I think most girls tend to.

Yeah, I would LOVE to see one! If I ever have the extra cash, it'd be a nice gift pour moi :D Sadly, I don't see it happening any time soon :( Ah, well. I really like my badge as-is though--I like wearing it, and I think I'd be anxious about wearing one with all diamonds. Either I'd somehow lose it or keep having a nightmare about somebody ripping it off my shirt... yikes!

my middle little was a diamond pledge, so her grandmother paid for her to get a diamond badge..its absolutely beautiful.. a few members of my chapter had them as well..

also we have a president's badge that gets passed down, and thats a diamond badge..

it really is gorgeous..one day when i'm rich i'll upgrade mine :)

MysticCat 11-05-2002 01:01 PM

1)does your group offer different varieties?
We have two options: the crown-set badge with 12 pearls and 6 garnets (no other choices or substitutes) and the plainer (no-stones) scroll border badge.

2) how much was yours
Scroll-border badges are included in the initiation fee. A brother can "up-grade" for an additional $30+. Guards, which are optional but common, run anywhere from $15 to $75, depending on the metal (gold filled, sterling, or 10K) and design (plain, etched, or pearls) and whether one is in a one- or two-letter chapter. (While all of these options are available, I have rarely seen anything except plain 10K guards).

3) did you get the standard or the upgrades?
The crown-set definately! I would say the vast majority of brothers up-grade for the crown-set badge. Technically, this is our official badge -- the stones are part of the official design, and it is the central element in our coat-of-arms. In fact, I understand that consideration is being given to discontinuing the scroll border option altogether.

4) is there a "pressure" in your chapter to get the more expensive ones?
I wouldn't say there is pressure. Most brothers want the crown-set badge -- I have known very few brothers who got the scroll-border badge (and they regretted it). The fact is that the crown-set badge is not only the official badge, it is nicer looking, more traditional, more meaningful, and not that much more expensive.

Alpha Phi Omega has several different varietes.

The APO badge is fairly expensive. Costs start at $20 and go up, based on whether its done in "Gold Kase" or 10carat gold, and if you have pearls or not.

You can also add chapter guards & officer dangles, again increasing the costs.

So not everyone gets one. Many chapters will have a chapter president's badge which is passed to each prez.

Our basic pin is the Service Pin, which costs $4, and EVERYONE gets as part of their Induction. So for most people, that's it for pins.

If you become a Life Member, you get the Life Member pin (which also costs $4).

If you make a Torchbearer donation, you get another pin.

I did get the basic badge, plus chapter guard & dangles, but then I can afford to. There is seldom any pressure to get them. I atleast try to make sure people are aware of them.

Hope this helps.

Optimist Prime 11-06-2002 02:52 AM

I want to add that no one has the jeweled up version of our badge. If we still had the diamond shaped badge it would look cool with rubies on the corners and perals around it. On our badge though i would only maybe do the swords. Snakes don't look right with jewelry.

Kevin 11-06-2002 02:54 AM

I noticed this thread said "PIN" -- Is it a Badge or a Pin for you?

wreckingcrew 11-06-2002 03:04 AM

Mine's a badge :D

Kitso
KS 361 rubies i'm gonna get on my BADGE if i ever make it big time.....j/k

Optimist Prime 11-06-2002 11:13 AM

The design is a badge. I hold it on my shirt with a pin. Everyone calls it a badge though, because its officcal. The sweetheart pin is the same thing only smaller but is called a pin.

Ginger 11-06-2002 12:00 PM

Ours is actually officially called a "pin"... I've been saying "badge" here for simplicity's sake (the whole pin/pin noun/verb thing)

RedRoseSAI 11-06-2002 12:22 PM

1)does your group offer different varieties?
I believe there are three styles - a semi-crown set and crown set (both in 10k gold) and then a semi-crown set in gold electroplate. Honestly, I'm not sure what the difference is between a semi-crown and a crown set.

2) how much was yours
$85

3) did you get the standard or the upgrades?
I started out with the standard badge (the $45 electroplate that most collegians get), but after that badge accidently got sucked up by my vaccum cleaner, I traded it in for the crown set. It's purty. :D

4) is there a "pressure" in your chapter to get the more expensive ones?
No.

BTW, the official SAI terminology is "badge" although in my experience, a lot of people say "pin"

Actually, I think you can chose between the standard balclad (sp?) or solid 14k gold with a real diamond....

Re: Your organizations pin

1)does your group offer different varieties?
Yup. Off of the top of my head: we have plain gold-plated, plain 10 K, single Tiffany pearl, single Tiffany diamond, crown pearl with Tiffany pearl, crown pearl with Tiffany diamond, crown pearl with diamond points, and all-diamond (reserved for the International President).

2) how much was yours?
I think mine was $40, but I don't remember.

3) did you get the standard or the upgrades?
I have the 10 K plain badge, which I suppose is standard. A lot of girls in my chapter have either the 10 K plain or the gold-plated one. I didn't get the gold-plated one because I'm allergic to nickel and I break out into a nasty rash if I'm wearing jewelry that isn't solid silver or gold.

4) is there a "pressure" in your chapter to get the more expensive ones?
No, some people do and some people don't, depending on how much money one has at the time of initiation. I am planning on upgrading to the 14 pearl badge with chapter guard and officer dangles as soon as I have some spare cash on hand (definitely before our centennial convention in 2004! :D).

UMgirl 11-07-2002 01:45 PM

I think the cost ranges for AGD's badges are $27-$200.

I think I paid $21 for the plain one. I want to upgrade though.

Lindz928 11-08-2002 06:31 PM

I love our badge (which our chapter calls a pin, but I like the word badge better)! It's a diamond shape, and you can get it plain, like mine, which is $62. You can also choose from other varieties, with jewels, pearls, and/or diamonds at the corners or all the way around. I don't know how much the upgraded versions cost, because I like mine the way it is.

You can see a small picture of our pin on our chapter's website at www.aggieadpi.com
I don't know where I could tell you to find a better pic.

SilverTurtle 11-09-2002 04:27 PM

Our badge (officially badge, not pin) is available in plain gold, gold with close set pearls, or gold with crown set pearls. Range from about $30-$190; more if you also get chapter guards (especially the 3 letter chapters with the pearls!), dangles, etc.

Everyone in my chapter had plain. The pearl-set ones look to girly for the guys and most of us couldn't afford the upgrade. So there was no pressure towards any one type. I personally don't like pearls, so I won't ever upgrade anyways. (Unless we start offering a silver/white gold option.. then I'll be the first to order it!) :P

Lost of the female alumnae from all of the chapters do upgrade, though, once they can afford to. And if we offered a diamond one I might have to save up, because those sound awesome!

Here are the 3 styles of badge, and you can see that one has a guard and dangle:

http://www.phibeta.com/graphics/jewelry/badges.jpg

AlphaSigOU 11-11-2002 12:53 AM

Alpha Sigma Phi does not have jeweled badges (they're prohibited per the constitution of the fraternity) and all badges are the same design except for the HSP (president) pin which is larger and resembles the original badge as worn in the 1850s. The HSP badge is the property of the chapter and is passed between presidents as the symbol of their office.

Back when I was initiated, the garden-variety 'Balclad' badge was about $25, (it's now around $50). I don't recall if there were 10K badges offered for sale to members.

A Random DphiE 12-25-2002 01:27 PM

1)does your group offer different varieties? The only options we have are goldplated, 10k, 14k, or 24k yellow gold, each with or without the 21 pearls surrounding the BADGE itself

2) how much was yours my NM Badge was about 35 and my Sister Badge was 185 (goldplated w/ 21 Pearls)

3) did you get the standard or the upgrades? in my chapter that is the standard....although i wish i would've have known i could have gotten it in REAL gold when i was a NM

4) is there a "pressure" in your chapter to get the more expensive ones? not really since we all get the same one...no one has ordered a pearl-less Badge to date

Tom Earp 12-25-2002 02:05 PM

LXA came out with a plain Badge for @ 10.00. The thought was that every member could have a Badge.

Well it was an idea.

My Badge is white gold, pearls in the Cresent (8) and 11 saphires in the Lambda.

Yellow gold is the standard,(white Gold extra). A variety of gems in the Lambda.

I have many Badges that I have bought off of ebay to resell to the chapter members at my cost.
I also have one that is yellow gold, 9 rubys and 3 diamonds at the points of the Lambda. Heck the Guard cost me 85.00 to add to that Badge. This was from a Brother at U. Memphis who I wish I could find again!

Our Badges range from the Basic of 10.00 to 220.00 depending on the gems and with or with out Diamonds.

I also own a TKN Badge that merged with LXA in 1939 that has 7 Diamonds in it! Cost me 468.00, Will go to the Chapter upon my demise.

While I do not have a chance to wear My Badge Often, I am always proud to display it when I can!

I wish more undergrads would show their colors, letters, and Badges on campus! That to me shows that you are proud of your Organization!

Why wear beer, racing, shoe, football teams shirts?

Be proud of who you are and who you are with!!

I've seen a HUGE variety in ADPi pins. They all have the same black enamel diamond as in 1851, but from there, the sky's the limit. Lindz has the plain one, most of my chapter has pearls along the edges, I have one with "jeweled points" (in my case, a sapphire at each of the 4 points, but you can have literally any type of gem), every other (alternating pearls & gemstones), or opals instead of pearls. The guard can be plain (mine), engraved, or with pearls and/jewels. White gold is MUCH more expensive. National Officers may wear a diamond badge (diamonds instead of pearls), and our Grand President Eremitus has a double row of diamonds.

In many chapters, one orders her pin by her "family" - if her big/diamond sister has just pearls, she gets pearls, etc.

I also have a pearl pin (I bought from a sister who sold it), and a pearl with ruby points pin that was made into a ring.

sairose 12-25-2002 07:23 PM

Ours all look the same. If you get gold plated, it's $45.00. If you get 10k, it's I think $75.00.

*blush*

It's been a while since I ordered my pin. When I did, the white gold was double the price of the yellow gold. I may have been mistaken about the national officers, too - but Maxine Blake does have a double row of diamonds, and it is AWESOME!

I have seen the points in almost any stone, not just the blue (rubies, emeralds, topaz, garnets & that pink stone). My initiation pin is identical to yours, Chloe! :)

AGDLynn 12-25-2002 11:02 PM

As DWAlpha Gam said, AGDs can choose from a variety, starting with the plain badge to all diamonds. I think that the "standard" these days is for initiates to order the "plain" badge. When I was initiated many moons ago, everyone ordered the one with 14 pearls and a chapter guard. My Pledge Trainer (now New Member Coordinator) had only achieved 13 pearls so she made sure all achieved that 14th pearl.

I now wear my badge, guard and Arc of Epsilon Pi (fraternity award) on the pendant necklace. Right before the school year started, I ordered a plain badge to wear sometimes (or lend to a collegiate when they forget their's at Pref, lol).

This is a dumb question... but can you order another ADPi pin? When I went through as an alumna, I only got the less-expensive black enamel pin. Now, going to chapter activities, I see that some of the sisters did pony up the cash for the jeweled pins, and they look sooooooo beautiful! So do you just call up Nationals and order a new one, or what?

Not that I'm going to do it this week or anything-- I'm thinking I'll get graduated and get involved in my local alum association first, but I want to save up the money slowly if I'm going to do it right!

You can order a new pin, Kate. The form is on Pride Online.

I bought my second pin (yellow gold with pearls) from a sister who needed the money. I offered to let her buy it back, but she never took me up on it. I have lent it to new initiates, when there were more new initiates than actives. The other pin I have (yellow gold, ruby points) was already made into a ring. I got it on ebay. If you're really interested in another pin, I'd check there, and watch the prices. Some go even higher than buying them through EO, while others are real bargains! Good luck, Kate!
