Eta Eta !!

Hey everyone,
This message is especially for sherbertlemons =) ... I would love to hear more about what's going on with Kappa at your school. I'm in Eta Delta ( just 2 schools older than you!) - It's been a hard process for us to transition over from a very active local sorority to a national one but things are finally looking up - thanks to the very hard of work of the last council. I was just interested in your new member class and what you guys are up to!

Loyally,
Lisa

Hello!

Okay, here goes...this may be a long post. :D

Things seem to be going very well with Kappa on campus. We have somewhere i the neighborhood of 100-120 girls. (I think.) They seem great, and from what I understand we all have a lot of leadership experience, and from what I've heard our average gpa is in the neighborhood of 3.8.

The Greek community on campus has been really nice and welcoming. The week of colonization, a bunch of the sorority and fraternity houses had banners welcoming us. The Delta Gammas sent a big cookie cake to one of our informal chapter meetings, and we've already been serenaded. Needless to say, we're thrilled.

We haven't been terribly active on the social scene yet. This semester is mostly taken up with tring to get ourselves organized, etc. However, we've been meeting every Wednesday behind the student union for lunch. We turn the place into a sea of blue. We've also had other Greeks stop by there and say hi, welcome us to the campus, etc.

I was really surprised when we started the officer selection procedure last night at informal chapter. We had previously been told we wouldn't elect officers till next semester, but I guess our advisors reconsidered and decided it would be best to do it now. we're condensing a 6- week process into two, though...it should be interesting.

Initiation i November 23. It's hard to beleive it's that close. The time has absolutely flown by. I can't wait!

yay!

Yay! I'm excited about Eta Eta's initiation! I will be traveling to Orlando with my Epsilon Phi girls from UF to initiate them! :)

It's going to be a loooong weekend, but I'm looking forward to it!! :) :) :) :D

What did you mean by this? Was it a local sorority, under another name, and then Kappa took over? How does all of that work??

Welcome to the sisterhood! Sounds like y'all are off to a fantastic start. Keep us posted on initiation and everything.

Colonizing a new chapter is very exciting. When I was a freshman, my chapter was the big sister chapter for Epsilon Tau at Mississippi State (now closed). All the Big Blue Owls were there. My little sister there now lives in my hometown and works with one of my blood sisters--small world!

I keep hoping Epsilon Tau will be reinstated--there can NEVER be too many Kappa chapters!!!

This is partially to test out my signature, but also to let everyone know how excited I am... along with curlygirl to go to UCF on the 22nd and 23rd for their initiation! It is going to be great! YaY! I feel so special to be involved in this process! I am really happy to hear that the UCF greek community has been so hospitable that is great!

About that local to national transistion....my chapter was a local sorority up until about 5 years ago when our entire sorority system decided to go national. That's why we're a baby chapter still :) The transition was hard because many people still wanted to hold on to traditions we had as Betas, many of which would have been considered hazing by Kappa Nationals...slowly but surely most of that has been weeded out though! Here's my adivce for you girls that are going down to help out with Initiation...continue to be there for Eta Eta - even after you go back to your own campuses. Our chapter would have benefited greatly from having a "big sis" chapter to call upon from time to time...

I'm so happy that I am a....

The weekend was amazing! Not only were 121 Eta Eta girls initiated and paired up with Key Sisters.... but there were sooo many alumni and national people there!

The Fraternity President, Ann Truesdell, was there all weekend.... along with several other incredible ladies who have worked so hard to make Eta Eta a reality. The actual initiation ceremony was BEAUTIFUL! I don't think that I'll ever have another opportunity to participate in ritual with soooo many girls, and sooo many 'head honchos'! It was great!

Saturday we had a luncheon with all the new sisters, their key sisters, parents & friends, and alumni. There were about 380 people at the luncheon, and it was just great! Being in a room with so many Kappas from so many different chapters really gave a wonderful new perspective on fraternity life. We even had the opportunity to participate in ritual with so many women after the Eta Eta girls were initiated!

I met many girls from the Kappa chapters at U of Miami, Rollins College, FSU, and Georgia Southern. It's amazing how each chapter is sooo different, but at the same time, sooo alike! We learned new songs/cheers... and compared notes on a bunch of Kappa things!

Overall the weekend was great!

Oh... and I was a little sneaky and made sure that I was Sherbertlemons' Key Sister!!! It was great to see her face when I told her that I was from GC! :D

MSKKG 11-24-2002 08:58 PM

Sounds like it was a magical weekend! I can't wait to read all about it in The Key.

Eta Eta is off to a great start with 121 fabulous women and a lot of Kappa support.

Curlygirly, how fun that you were able to get you and sherbertlemons paired up! Here's to the GC connection!!!

sherbertlemons 11-25-2002 12:04 AM

I have to second Curlygirly's opinion and say that this weekend was awesome. I'm so happy to finally be an initiated Kappa!

I'm absolutely exhausted, but it was ABSOLUTELY worth it. I got matched up with Curlygirly immediately following Fireside, so that was fun. :) Although I must say I kinda suspected something of the sort when she PMed me asking for my full name and then assured me that we wouldn't have trouble finding each other that weekend. ;)

After Fireside, the fraternity president talked with our soon-to-be chapter for a little bit. That was cool, but it was kinda funny to hear her answering mundane questions about what to wear under our initiation garments. :D

Initiation that morning...wow. What can I say? It was absolutely awesome. I'm sure everyone who's been through it knows just what I mean.

The banquet that afternoon was fun. Curlygirly and I were seated together, so it was neat to get to talk together. It was also cool getting to see so many high officers in the fraternity. The ritual we did at the banquet was cool- it was tearing me up a little to do ritual with so many Kappas.

After that we had pictures, and then the UF girls left. It was just our chapter having our first real formal chapter meeting, where yours truly was installed as corresponding secretary.

All in all, it was an awesome weekend. It flew by...and already it's a bit of a haze.

sherbertlemons 11-25-2002 12:27 AM

Oh, and I forgot to mention that we went serenading this Sunday evening, when we would normally have chapter. The DU's and SAE's were really nice- the DU's had flowers for us and a card signed by the whole fraternity and the SAE's gave us a really big cheer! :D

The Thetas also heard we were serenading and caught us out in Greek Park with balloons and a cake for us. They're the newest before us, so it's kinda cool. They still have active members around who colonized, I think.

curlygirly 11-25-2002 01:01 AM

Eta Eta

To add to that.... tonight we had formal chapter and ELECTIONS---we usually have chapter on Monday nights.

Anyway, the new Eta Eta president was there to learn more about running a chapter meeting... she also got to witness very interesting elections, that lasted about 3 hours! She was taking notes and learning all about formal chapter. It was nice to see her... plus she got to see our house.

KappaKittyCat 12-02-2002 05:02 PM

Wanted to add my congratulations to all of our new sisters in HH Chapter! Yay Curlygirly and Sherbertlemons! That's awesome that you two were paired together. Woohoo! Good luck this year with everything new and growing. I'm sure you'll be fabulous.

Kappa love & loyalty,
Delsigmata,

KerriMarie 12-19-2002 02:10 AM

Random question for E-Phis...

Hey, I was just wondering who your new prez is - did Jasmine get it? I met Jas and Suzy last fall in London, they're such fun people and I heard at the Eta Eta Initiation that Jas was up for prez - but haven't heard anything since! Any news?

curlygirly 12-19-2002 10:48 PM

E-Phi President

That's so random that you met Jasmine and Suzy in London!!

Anyway... after a VERY long voting process because it was such a CLOSE race..... Jasmine Bragg is the new Epsilon Phi President. She was installed at the last chapter meeting of the semester. :)

Ask your president... she was present at our elections... which lasted a total of about 3 hours..... half of that was on president!

KerriMarie 12-19-2002 11:38 PM

Yay for Jasmine!!! :) She's so awesome. I was really hoping she and Suzy would come down for the UCF Initiation, but no such luck...

Which EZ president was there? Bethany or Ashleigh? Bethany is our outgoing president, Ashleigh is our incoming...

curlygirly 12-20-2002 10:40 PM

oops!

Oh! I totally messed up that last post.... I meant to say that the new Eta Eta president was at our elections..... not EZ. Sorry!!! :)

sherbertlemons 01-07-2003 09:57 PM

I thought you guys might appriciate an update now that we've had our officer retreat and started our new semester.

We had our retreat this past weekend. The first half was a daylong meeting with our advisors at an advisor's house. We did some icebreakers, spent time familiarizing ourselves with the Fraternity Bylaws and Standing Rules, ran through scenarios of problems with the chapter, and did a ritual review. After that, we headed over to our VPO's apartment for an officer sleepover. It was a blast, and really successful. I feel so much closer to them! Angela (our president) also went into detail about things she had learned from UF to implement in our chapter. All the officers left with warm fuzzies about the upcoming year.

We had informal chapter last night. It was long; we're hoping to get most meetings done in under an hour, but we had so much new business that we just couldn't do it. However, it was VERY well organized. People were quiet, and we got what we had to do done very efficiently. Now if only we can fight the accoustical problem in the auditorium so everyone can hear.
