You Are A Child Of The 80's If:

YOU ARE A CHILD OF THE 80'S IF:

You had a crush on Jon Bon Jovi, or knew someone who did.
You know what a "burnout" is.
You wanted to be on Star Search.
You can remember what Michael Jackson looked like before his nose fell off.
You wore a banana clip at some point during your youth.
You owned a doll with 'Xavier Roberts' signed on its ass.
You knew what Willis was "talkin' 'bout."
You HAD to have your MTV
You know the profound meaning of "Wax on, Wax off".
You can name at least half of the members of the elite "Brat Pack".
You know that another name for a keyboard is a "Synthesizer".
You hold a special place in your heart for "Back to the Future".
You know where to go if you "wanna go where everybody knows your name".
You thought Molly Ringwald was REALLY cool.
You know what "Sike" means.
You know who Tina Yothers is.
You wanted to be a Goonie.
You actually thought "Dirty Dancing" was a REALLY good movie.
You felt ashamed when Rob Lowe got in trouble for sex with minors and videotaping it, because you liked him.
You have heard of Garbage Pail Kids.
You knew "The Artist" when he was humbly called "Prince".
You ever wore fluorescent, neon if you will, clothing.
You could breakdance, or wish you could.
You know who Max Headroom is.
You remember when ATARI was a state of the art video game system.
You own any cassettes.
You were led to believe that in the year 2000 we'd all be living on the moon.
You remember and/or own any of the Care Bear Glass collection from Pizza Hut.
Poltergeist freaked you out.
You carried your lunch to school in a Gremlins or an ET lunchbox.
You have ever pondered why Smurfette was the ONLY female Smurf.
You know what a Doozer is.
You wore biker shorts underneath a short skirt and felt stylish.
You ever had a Swatch Watch.
You had a crush on one of the Corey’s (Haim or Feldman).
You remember when Saturday Night Live was funny.
You had WonderWoman or Superman underoos.
You wanted to be The Hulk for Halloween.
You Believed that "By the power of Greyskull, you HAD the power!"
You thought that Transformers were more than meets the eye.
You know what a "Whammee" is.
Partying "like it's 1999" seemed SO far away.

If you can identify with at least half of this list then you, my friend, are a "Child of the 80's".

Kevin 10-31-2002 12:17 PM

I just have to say I'm glad I was a child of the 80's... Kids these days don't know what they missed.

Fewdfreak 10-31-2002 12:21 PM

I can identify with *a lot* of those, thanks, AOX81 that was hilarious!

Ktsnake, totally agree, the 80's was a great time to be kid...

This one "You have ever pondered why Smurfette was the ONLY female Smurf." made me laugh especially because I was thinking about the smurfs last week or so. There was a TV Funhouse on SNL about Smurfette now-a-days ala Anna-Nicole Smith show and it was so funny because Anna-Nicole is so *NASTY*.

Sorry but if it wasn't 80s it shouldn't be in the list...Something that came out in 89 would make it more of a 90's thing than an 80's thing but the flashback was great!

I was a child of the 80's and used to do this. I now teach high school, and my students are doing this again!!!! I show them pictures from my high school yearbook of everyone with crimped hair, and they freak out. They hate it that it isn't new, and that I actually approve of their fad.

I'm not sure about that? I started high school in 1989 and I had a friend who used to love Duck Tales when we were in Junior High, even though she knew she was too old for it....

And besides, MC Hammer, Ninja Turtles etc. yes it may have been early 90's, BUT we were teenagers by then, maybe even late teenagers- thus we were CHILDREN in the 80's. That's what I figured they meant by putting in some of those later things.

Care Bear Stare!

The cartoon may be coming back. I've seen commercials for the bears on Nickelodian! Woo Hoo :)

I've never pondered why Smurfette was the only girl. I KNOW why she's the only one. She was created by Gargamel. She orginally had black hair but when she "changed to good" her hair turned blonde.

Before that, I had a triangle perm - the rods were angular. It looked so cool, having zigzags all over! But boy, did that ruin my hair!!! http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies...rri_manthy.gif

ROTFL! We spent years trying to convince ASLFrose that he's not white! Even if we showed her an old picture labeled with his name, she'd insist that it wasn't the same guy.

Years later we found out that the whole time, BlazerCheer and Ballerina believed that he was black but had always thought he was a girl.:(

KillarneyRose 11-02-2002 02:43 AM

Tracy's Cool Eighties Experience...

A long spiral perm with poofy bangs that fell just so over my right eye. And the left side sprayed (frozen!) back with Spritz Forte.

Jeans (pinstriped or stonewashed or with a floral pattern) that were so tight around the ankles they were hard to pull on. I STILL practically have to force myself to buy flared pants :(

Beads, lots of 'em

High heeled pumps and ankle socks

Wearing 3 or 4 SwatchWatches at once, complete with Swatch Guards of course!

"Disco bags", small satin drawstring pouches with long cords that were used as purses.

Alligator Shirts

Side ponytails

My ultra-modern graphite tennis racquet (I think they carry them at Target now)

Sweatshirt dresses from Express; worn with big, dangly earrings also from Express

Guess jean jackets festooned with pins of every kind

Cutting off the legs of tights and using them as headbands

Black eyeliner. Lots of it.

"Bubble dresses"

"The Prairie Look" (sadly, I think it's making a comeback)

Mini skirts worn with ankle boots and slouch socks

Jansport backpacks

Freddy Kreuger

Flashdance (the first big movie filmed in my hometown of Pittsburgh. People who lived there were confused by some scenes in the movie..."why are they dancing in the Carnegie museum?" "Why did she take the Incline up Mt. Washington but end up on the South Side?" "How did she learn to weld at such a young age?")

"Forever" by Judy Blume. We thought it was SO racy! I re-read it a few months back and thought, "What a piece of crap!"

That's it for now :)

ShaedyKD 11-02-2002 09:42 AM

I know someone mentioned Thundercats somewhere in here?!!! Jeez I loved that show. So many of these things are coming back...they now have Care Bears out at the stores to buy, just like the old ones. I work at an afterschool program at a country club, and these kids have a PS2, PS1 and a Sega Genesis to play with. Guess which one sits untouched? Oh yeah, the Genesis, because they know if they try to play the counselors, we will kick their butts! They have no clue as to what it is, let alone what an Atari is!

Kevin 11-02-2002 10:11 AM

I don't even know why they put other cartoons on TV... 80's cartoons were just better than anything they have these days.. Some of the animated violence type stuff like in GI-Joe would probably start a riot somewhere though with its use of guns.

Our toys were better also.. Look at some of these action figures they have these days.. I mean come on.. He-Man, Transformers, GI-Joe stuff, Voltron... It was so much better than Power Rangers.

CarolinaCutie 11-02-2002 11:16 AM

FYI, Max Headroom reruns now come on Tech TV.

I caught a glimpse of it the other day, and I RAN, freaking out, to tell my little sister (15) on Instant Messenger. Apparently she doesn't remember it. It was an exciting moment anyway :p

Dionysus 11-02-2002 11:24 AM

Personally, I like the early 90's better. :)

Angels&Arrows 11-02-2002 07:56 PM

I have not read through all the posts... So forgive me if this is a repeat...

Two words...... Speed Skates...

Roller Skating was big in Virginia Beach in the early 80s!!!!!!!! And if you were cool you had speed skates, they looked like black sneakers with white racing strips and cool special wheels.... And if you were really cool you could do fancy line skating...

Yes indeed... loved late grammer school.

**True, BUT, I did know who he was even back in the '80s cuz we talked about him in West Virginia History class since he used to play for WVU.

If this is Larry Bird the former Boston Celtic, I THINK he went to Indiana State. But I could be wrong.

This e-mail is a big piece of crap. I got it when I started college in 1998. The exact same email. It was about the class of 2002. It even made it into Dear Abby. It certainly wasn't true for my class - but with each year, it does get more and more true...

Although...Jay Leno took over the tonight show in 1992 - the class of 2005 was 8 then. I think most 8 year olds know the difference between Johnny Carson and Jay Leno :p

I was born in 1980. Part of me will always live in the 80s. Friday night, while waiting for take-out, my boy and I squared off at a game of Pac Man. On one of the 2 player tables. Damn, those things are cool. I so want one for my house.

I'm wearing my Care Bears t-shirt right now. They have Care Bear slippers at Hot Topic. They are so cool!

I still have my family's BetaMax, along with the collection of tapes...one of them being the only copy of my appearance on MTV's Remote Control (1988)...wearing a KD jersey, of course.

My "kinky perm" & subsequent Flock-of-Seagulls hairstyle had grown out by then, since it was a few months before graduation & I figured I needed to have somewhat normal hair to interview.... this was the 80's Corporate America, ya know... ;)

Yeah, being a collegian during the 80s was really fun... http://smilies.crowd9.com/contrib/bl...milecrunch.gif
