it's cold out! how do you keep warm and cozy?

It has been cold and drizzly around here for the last few days. I guess winter is really almost here. :(

What do you guys do to keep your self warm on the inside? I've been running errands between classes and have to go outside and it chills me to the bone! So for lunch today I picked up a baked potato and cup of chilli at Burger King. I'm on a pretty strict budget but both of those items were on the 99 cent menu. Woo hoo!

lifesaver 10-30-2002 03:44 PM

Lots of blankets.
And layers of clothing.

Hot showers help.

Rarely does it get very cold here, tho.

Its 85 out right now. I am in shorts and flip-flops.

In south Texas, its more about keeping cool and the stupid AC keeps going gout here at the office.

I love starting a roaring fire in the fireplace on cold winter nights, curling up in my chenille blanket, and reading a good book while drinking a cup of hot tea or chocolate. :) It's suppose to get in the 30's at the end of the week, and I'm already looking forward to it! :D

I like to go for a walk in the early evening just when it's getting dark out. Walking past pretty houses with glowing windows makes me feel warm and cozy even when it's cold. Then it's nice to get home and have a cup of tea and curl up with a cat. Or a boy. :)

Amen to that!

I would also like to salute the European way of doing things. They keep their thermostats low because energy is so expensive. When I was living in Firenze, the temperature in our apartment was never higher than about 62º F. We drank lots of warm beverages, wore socks, layers, sweaters, and everybody slept under nice, warm, down comforters.

Then I got home to freezing Wisconsin and found that my family was sitting with the thermostat near 75º F. I was roasting! I walked around in shorts and tank tops with bare feet. At night I can't sleep if it's warm, so I'd actually have to crack open a windown in my bedroom to cool the room down to the temperature at which I needed it.

I have a wonderful pair of silk long underwear. From November 'til March I wear them under just about everything at school because the wind goes right through you here during the winters. I also wear a scarf most of the time, indoors and out.

And, of course, I'm all about snuggling.

since i've moved about 10 hrs north, I have discovered the wonderful world of electric blankets!

Same here. It's hot like hell in the VI. I can't wait until "winter" when the nights are a lot cooler.

Anyway, when I was in undergrad in upstate NY, I had this goosedown quilt that was THE BEST for keeping warm. It was nice and fluffy too.

Rio_Kohitsuji 10-30-2002 08:12 PM

Guess what....it was snowing today!! And it's going to continue til Sunday! :) :) (<--- southern Ohio)

Hmm..what I do on cold days..that's an easy one. :) Get my boyfriend over, order a pizza, pop in a DVD and curl up on the couch under some blankets for some umm...."cuddling"...

Jadey28 10-30-2002 09:47 PM

Not only is it cold here, but it has been raining for days. So, I have found myself drinking hot tea, dressing in layers, and cuddling up underneath a warm blanket. I have also been doing short spurts of aerobics just to get myself warmed up a little (hey, jumping jacks are fun sometimes :D ) I hate the cold weather, unless there is snow on the ground. Snow makes the 28 degrees outside feel like 75 degrees-especially when you are outside in it!!!!

Optimist Prime 10-30-2002 10:21 PM

Its cold and pisses down rain all the time :( I wish the heat duct was right by a big hole in the closest.

PandaOnProzac 10-30-2002 11:19 PM

Turn on all 5 computers in the apartment and let it be our heaters.

I miss S. TX "fall" weather :( I am a human popscile right now!!! I don't know how these people can live in these temps.. and I'm just in north texas... I can't imagine what it's like *way* up north!

Some of my friends here don't believe me when I tell them sometimes Christmas weather is suitable for t-shirts and shorts in S. TX :p

Hootie 10-31-2002 12:49 AM

When I come home and change outta my work clothes, I immediately put on my comfy pants, a long sleeved t-shirt and SOCKS! I can't stand it when my feet are cold.

Then I lay underneath a pile of blankets and my comforter and watch tv.

If the mood strikes me, I'll even make a kettle of tea or some hot chocolate.

At night I like to take a nice hot shower and then pile on the clothes (don't forget the SOCKS) and then stay warm under the blankets before I fall asleep again!

At my parent's house they'll light a fire in the wood burning stove. That thing generates more heat than ANY fireplace ever could. It's so nice to be around it! Especially when the whole family gathers around to watch movies on a saturday night with all the blankets in the house. Fun times :)

I hear ya on that one... I am the SAME way! :)

SATX*APhi 10-31-2002 01:27 AM

It doesn't really get that cold out this way. When it does get cold, I'm in the mood for hot cocoa and the fire place, not b/c it's cold, but b/c you can't do that stuff when it's warm out. Hell, I'm the one who sleeps with the ceiling fan on during the coldest of cold. :D

Fewdfreak 10-31-2002 02:32 AM

It is SO cold here, and it's only going to get worse. When I get home I turn our heat WAAAY up, and then when my roomie gets home, she is like "It's hot as balls in here." and opens the window. I am never hot, always cold, so I wear like tons of layers, and you'll never find me wearing a t-shirt unless it has something over it after October, because it's cold!

I know a few girls who are wearing t-shirts and such to "prepare" for the winter so they get acclimated to the cold, and only need a light coat during the winter! CRAZY!

swissmiss04 10-31-2002 02:41 AM

Electric blankets are da bomb...also my mom makes these things called "sock buddies" that are nothing but tube socks filled w/ rice and then heated in the microwave for a couple minutes. The moist heat can really soothe your muscles and warm you up!!!

aephi alum 10-31-2002 11:17 AM

We had our first snow of the season last night! Just a flurry, but still... winter is on the way :(

There was a guy in one of my classes freshman year, who wore tank tops and shorts right through November. In December it got a little too chilly for that, so he wore a t-shirt and shorts instead. This was in Boston.

Keeping warm...
- Big fluffy down comforter on the bed
- Roaring fire in the fireplace (hubby gets to schlep the wood in ;) )
- Throw blankets (I must have about 10 of them)
- Hot coffee or tea in the morning
- Hot chocolate with a shot of peppermint schnapps, or a glass of cognac, at night
- Curling up with my husband (my personal favorite :) )

aprilxo 10-31-2002 11:23 AM

I cozy up with fuzzy socks and my huge cuddly red fleece blanket that has my crest embroidered in the corner with my name and initiation date :) It is soooo cozy and warm and I love it! Hot cocoa is also a must... or some steamy oatmeal mmmm

I turn on the heater.

Fewdfreak 10-31-2002 12:23 PM

Oh, aephi alum, you are making me homesick for my fireplace. I wish I had one here.

Fireplaces aren't really that great (at least for the rest of the house). They suck in cold air from outside and your hot air goes up the chimney.

Ah, but you're not in the rest of the house... you're in the family room by the fireplace ;)

If you control the flue properly, you can minimize the amount of hot air that goes up the chimney without filling your house with smoke.

Actually, what I really want to do is convert my fireplace to gas. I saw a gas fireplace where the fire is behind a sheet of glass that somehow transmits the heat into the room... it's safer, especially if you have little kids around... also a lot less messy.
