AST does not list inactive chapters on its website, and Tri-Sigma's website is not working right now. |

Also, I know that Phi Kaps were here at one point in time. Anyone know of other fraternities that were here at one point? |
Why did Delta Sig leave?
|
Geez that's huge! How many students at that school and what percent is Greek?
|
Our Kappa Deuteron Charge of Theta Delta Chi was closed down in 1998, if I'm not mistaken. So, adding your list, Theta Delta Chi once was in UI.
|
hehe...
DeltaBeta baby,
This is just off topic and random: Your signature "Theres no place like HOME" (with the Phi and Mu of course) was our homecoming theme (well, minus the Phi and Mu!) and was just thinking about how cool it would have been if we had a Phi Mu chapter here! (actually the founders of my chapter wanted to be a chapter of Phi Mu, but then fell in love with Phi Sig when they made their presentation!) hehe just random! |
Alpha Xi Delta
So sorry I forgot you guys!
I have no idea if AXiD was ever here, so someone please fill me in. |

Go Illini!!! :)
I'm a Phi Sig at U of I and to answer one of your questions, our house mom (whose been here for 20 years!!!) had said that Tri Sigma's use to be on campus. I can't remember the reason why they left. I've also heard that Zeta Tau Alpha is looking to recolonize but greek affairs won't let them back in right now because we are not ready to expand with more sororities. And I wanted to say great job with recruitment!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Phi Sigma Sigma Theta Chapter University of Illinois |

ZTA used to inhabit the Theta Chi house but left a few years back because of numbers. I believe their nationals still has the power to purchase back their house if they ever decide to recolonize, which is cool because it's a gorgeous, huge house!
AZD was definitely on campus- their house is a few blocks away from mine. It's set pretty far back from campus so I imagine they had a problem with reaching quota because of their location- on a campus as big as ours, girls balk when houses are far away. The house is very pretty and looks to be in stellar condition- I'd love to see AZD take it back! I think we also used to have Fiji, back in the day. One of my sister's father was a Fiji U of I alum but he told her they got kicked off for risk management reasons. We definitely used to have Theta Delta Chi- I believe they adopted part of a street (I think Armory). If you look through old editions of the Illio (yearbook) we used to have a ton of other sororities that I believe were local. And then we have a huge amount of professional interest groups too :) |
Hey, someone forgot 9 fraternities and sororities!
Why weren't the NPHC groups mentioned? Someone mentioned them later, but not in the initial post.
Is it fair to say that it's the largest "in the world"? Are there really any college Panhellenics outside of the United States and Canada? It's not as if you're competing against Panhellenics in Zimbabwe. But, I guess it is pretty cool to say you're the "largest in the world". |
Read my post carefully, please. "Someone mentioned them later, but not in the initial post. " And not by name.
|
My bad, I'm just not here right now.

And why wouldn't it be okay to say that it's the biggest Panhel in the world? It's like the Miss Universe pageant -- they're not competing with anybody from Mars or Jupiter, but the winner is still known as "Miss Universe," not "Miss World." :D |
Divine Nine?
Hi, I have a question as to what you mean when you refer to the "divine nine?"
Thanks |

ZTA
A friend of mine from ISU (Illinois State) said Zeta's were once in the delta tau delta house and a bell at the top of their tower still has the letters ZTA on it. It's a big deal cuz they want the bell back!

University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign must have the most exhausting formal recruitment! When do you rush, Fall or Spring? My feet hurt just thinking about those poor pnms walking from house to house to house to house! Wow.
Panhellenic meetings must be quite something as well, there must be lots of opportunity to take on projects and spearhead committees. You guys are fortunate, it sounds like it would be wonderful to be involved in such a large Greek System. violets |

UIUC rush is pretty tiring! We have recruitment in the fall, right at the beginning of the school year. The first stage is Open House, where you go to all the houses- that alone takes one and a half days! First Invite takes up a day, Second Invite the whole afternoon and evening, and Third Invite (Pref Night) lasts the whole night. The taxation of it all can be hurtful on numbers- lots of girls drop out after Open House, the hardest stage of all. A good recruitment counselor tells her girls to take extensive notes on each house (names of girls, clothes worn, personal opinions, house, what went on, conversation topics) so that she doesn't get them confused. I know more than one girl who had a problem keeping AEPhi, Alpha Phi, AOII, and ADPi straight, just because of their names!
Our size also means that rush can be pretty cutthroat for numbers. Luckily, it also means that almost any girl who rushes will be guaranteed a bid somewhere on campus! It also means a lot of drama between houses and often there is a very cliquey attitude which I could do without. Panhel meetings are also a source for lots of drama and lots of production- while PHC/IFC often get a lot of stuff done on campus (especially philanthropy wise) it's not always fun and games. I'm good friends with our panhel rep and she says meetings can be very stressful! |
Totally off the subject...
Is Natalie still your panhel rep?
|
Wow! After reading that impressive line up, I'm sitting here with my mouth open. I cannot even imagine!! What is house total on your campus? What is the average size of a fraternity/sorority? Is there a wide range in sizes or is everyone pretty much the same?
|
House total for NPC groups is 145, so most groups are right around that.
Fraternties vary from 20-100, but I would say the majority are around 45-60. Interestingly enough, a group can change its reputation in one year with one or two good pledge classes. |
AST
No AST was never at U of I U. We are at U of I Chicago.
|
DeltaBetaBaby: Yep she is and she's doing a great job!
I have to say that being in a school where Greeks are such a big presence, it's hard to come up with reasons to badmouth the system. Most of the people who rush do it to meet people since it's such a large school, and since PHC recruitment can be tiring, you often easily weed out the girls who are just in it for fun and games, and aren't that dedicated. The size of our system often means it attracts devoted students- most of the fraternities and sororities are full of very bright, hardworking members who manage to get so much accomplished in their years here. |
