Terrell Owens
Was his act on Monday a boastful taunt, or simply a fun celebration?
http://msn.espn.go.com/nfl/news/2002/1016/1446852.html DISCUSS....................... |

He gets a thumbs down, as do all the other athletes with elaborate TD celebrations. Carrying that pen in his sock was stupid and dangerous. Whatever happened to the Ickey shuffle (LMAO) OR just tossing the ball back to the ref?
|
I thought it was pretty clever, actually.
|
I think that this is completely out of line. Especially when considering the other show-boating that he has done. A little celebration is fine. My team is the Packers. I'm ok with the Lambeau Leap. Not just because it's my team, but because the fans get involved in the celebration and it in no way disrespects the other team. And it also seems to me that the players who do the Leap are thanking the fans because they wouldn't be there without them...especially in Green Bay's case since it's owned by the public (including me!).
Anyway, back to T.O....he could have just given the ball to his friend after the td, or kept the ball to autograph later. I just don't like huge showoffs. |
Thoughts
Former NFL wide receiver Michael Irvin, he of the mink coat, lime-green suit and derby, was talking about this on Jim Rome's show today. Irvin, not surprisingly, got off on it and found it funny.
I found it amusing. I would also expect someone like Deion Sanders, if he were still playing, to do so. But I can see where the Seahawks were angry. I just hope that hard-core retaliation isn't on the minds of the 'Hawks on Dec. 1, when the rematch is scheduled in San Francisco. |

Huh???
Wait, I don't get it. I read the article and I still don't get it. All this fuss because he autographed the ball after a touch down? I'mma need for someone to tell me that he wrote "Holmgren is an a$$hole with a sh*tty record" and then threw the ball in his face. Then maybe I could understand all the commotion.
The article says: Many members of the Seahawks -- not Springs, however -- were angered by Owens' celebration, with Holmgren calling it "shameful'' and "a dishonor to anyone who ever played this game.'' More than one Seattle player suggested retaliation might be in order when the teams play at San Francisco on Dec. 1. Again, I say, HUH??? What is so shameful and dishonorable about what he did? Boastful, egotisitical and tacky, yes. Disrespectful, no. And what could they possibly do to retaliate? LMAO. I'm with Terrell on this one..... sounds like a bunch of whiny, sore losers to me. |

I think it's kinda cute, actually.
I can appreciate how players have their own style, and I think it keeps the game interesting -- and I don't see how what he did is disrespectful to anyone. |
Funny
I personally don't see what all the fuss is about? I mean we have bigger things to concentrate on than a football player's actions after a touchdown!! I think it is clever and was probably meant in a lighhearted way. And I think we all need something something to smile at these days!

I was just saying that I would expect him, with his showmanship and flamboyance, to do something similar to T.O. |
i found what terrell owens act on monday night to be amusing and highly clever. they're pros, getting paid big bucks, to act like bigger kids. i just wonder what he'll do for an encore...

If Koren Robinson or Shaun Alexander had done it for the Seahawks, we all laugh about it and it goes into Madden 2004.
Since it was TO, it's a total asshole move . . . I didn't love it, but didn't think it was out of line in general, I just prefer the Barry Sanders "Run ball to Ref" move more. |
Here are Boomer Esiason's thoughts on the whole incident.

First off..... It was originally Michael Ricks idea from the Detroit Lions and Terril admitted it. Ricks did a fake autograph signing after a td but the difference is.... Ricks is a nobody and that game wasn't played on national tv.
Second.... Owens didn't get fined for that, but he gets fined for having his shirt tucked out in that game. As the hurricane would say, Whatsupwitdat? |
Who cares?? Its only the Seahawks.
|
Whoever brought up Koren Robinson doing it- He'd have to get in the end zone first. LMAO
In the extreme stupidity department: Anyway, the players get fined for all sorts of stupid uniform infractions, including but not limited to: Untucked shirts, wrong color socks, slouching socks, etc. They actually have people on the sidelines checking the players out. Players get fined all the time, it just happens so often that it's rarely a news item. ZA |
You know, I'm pretty impressed that he didn't stab himself in the foot while running down the field. I'm not so sure I could accomplish such a feat (hahaha, no pun intended!)

TTT/Owens is an odd guy
From the San Jose Mercury News. This is being discussed on Jim Rome's show as I type this. It's odd that a man who wears tights during his workout is discussing people's sexuality.
Posted on Tue, Aug. 10, 2004 The world according to T.O. New Eagles receiver Terrell Owens has complained about contact in practices and Coach Andy Reid's requirement that players wear shorts over their tights. In this month's Playboy ``20 Questions,'' Owens offers some predictably contrarian -- even contradictory -- answers. Some excerpts: First question: Why didn't you fight the league for free agency and thus get a bigger signing bonus? First answer: It's not all about the money. I'm pretty sure I missed out on some money, but it's not that big of a deal. Second question: What do you like best about playing for the Eagles? Second answer: It's a brand-new start for me. People's perception of me has been tarnished by what the Bay Area media put out there. Dude, I'm a great guy. I'm a nice guy. What you see on the field is totally the opposite of what you see off the field. . . . Not only is the grass greener on the other side, but the uniform is greener, and I'm getting paid a lot more than what the 49ers were willing to pay me, so my bank account is greener. The interview moves on to quarterbacks, and these answers will be sure to win him friends across the league: Question: What gives an MVP quarterback like Peyton Manning the edge over a Donovan McNabb? (Oh, by the way, McNabb is Owens' quarterback.) Answer: Probably accuracy, which is something Donovan can improve on. That's not me putting a knock on Donovan. It's not something nobody else has said. He has probably said there are things about my game that need improvement. Question: Former 49er and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Jeff Garcia, with whom you played for years, has denied media rumors that he's gay. What do you think? Answer: Like my boy tells me: If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat. Check back in three or four years, and Morning Buzz will run excerpts of the interview in which Owens discusses how misunderstood he was in Philadelphia. |
Hey steeltrap, maybe he should have a cosmopolitan ;)

There's a thin line between plain celebrating and just plain stupid. Football is one of the most difficult sports to play at the professional level. I can't blame a DB who has just returned an interception for a touchdown for doing cartwheels in the endzone.
But you have your guys who pull out cell phones and Sharpie markers after scoring a touchdown, I mean come on! Also, the timing has much to do with it. After scoring the game-winning score in the championship, let the boys celebrate. Week 5 of the regular season? Please... |
