That number is a mix of real visitors + bots of various types over the last 15 minutes.

Would be interesting to see how high that number goes with GC still keeping up speed wise.

I’m not trying to play devil’s advocate, but I don’t understand the purpose of this.

And somebody by the name of Shelly sent me a pm but has only one post. The standard introductory post for newbies. Troll or weird.

Whenever I'm on GC I usually take a quick look at the number of online users & take that into consideration as I use the site in regards to how well it seems to be performing.

Sometimes when the number online is high I'll log into the server to see what the server load level is.

I look at it as an informal general way of approximating how well GC is running and/or what the server might be able to handle.

Been working on the HTTPS stuff for GC and that was the highest number I noticed.

10919- getting close to 11K. Are most likely bots?

I noticed Online Users get up to 11,120 so far today.

Yes, most of those connections are almost surely bots. But could also be many legit site visitors along with that since August usually seems to be the busiest time of year for GC.

I just find it interesting that the way I have the new server setup it's able to handle that much traffic without too much trouble.

More anti-bot stuff to work on is on my GC to-do list, so eventually those bots will (hopefully) be blocked or otherwise filtered out not too long from now.

Yes, Bama recruitment always drives up traffic! Crazy. Now it's just under 1500. It's like the bots travel together.

It's Tuesday at 1:10 a.m. CDT. I'm the only member online, and there are 1,757 guests prowling about.

15,051 was the highest number of "Online Users" so far.

Most of those were some kind of bot or web crawler. Some of those should no longer show up in the Online Users count, so the numbers shouldn't be all that high anymore, at least not on a regular basis unless GC has an explosion of traffic or more bots arrive. Just made these changes a few minutes ago.

I've been at a security conference for a few days and learned about a bot net of thousands of refrigerators you can purchase to attack sites for you, on the dark web. A whole army of refrigerators- what would people in the 50's say if you told them that would happen some day??

I gave them some virtual melatonin. Hopefully that works for a bit.

All it probably took was a single security flaw and those IoT / Internet of Things devices were quickly turned into an IoB / Internet of Bots. Crazy.

My guess is that eventually there'll be bot armies controlled by AI as well as AI trained for hacking. Probably exists to some extent already. Mix in some LLM stuff and... I suppose we are in store for an interesting tech future.

It kinda sounds crazy even today. In the 50's, might not have even made sense to most people back then. But by the 60s they had The Jetsons & Star Trek...
