Pi Beta Phi Connecticut Beta Votes to Disaffiliate from Pi Beta Phi National

This is a lot, but interesting information.

From the Yale Daily News: https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2023/...rom-nationals/

Well, these women sound like entitled POS but it's interesting what they said about political lobbying, especially since Pi Phi would be lobbying for the crap these women clearly stand for.

Good riddance.

I was shocked to read that the HQ was willing to offer a bridge loan for the huge pending debt. Is this a common practice?

My organization, if you don't pay your debt, you'll eventually will be closed AND in order for that closed chapter to recolonize in the future, all previous debts must be paid off.

Perhaps that's the price they're willing to pay to maintain a chapter at an Ivy League school?

SO glad they're gone!

On the one hand, they said they couldn't rush effectively without a house, but on the other hand, they couldn't get anyone to live there (which isn't a very good advertisement for house living during rush). Talk about the math ain't mathin.'

It's not my business, but I hope they're held to paying the debt they accrued with Pi Phi and that Pi Phi has legal recourse to recoup the chapter's and house board's assets. It seems like this is all about "walking away" and avoiding that financial responsibility. The real world doesn't work that way.

I will lose my remaining respect for Pi Phi if they don't force these people to pay up.

I noticed on one of their Insta posts from recruitment that the newspaper collage in the background proudly advertises their disaffiliation. It's a little hard to read but it says "Breaking News: First Sorority at Yale to Disaffiliate". Also, their new pledge class post seems to show that they got 50 new members.

And, from the "Bid Night" t-shirts they're wearing, it looks like Bid Night was in a bar. I'm sure Pi Phi is counting their blessings.

Na na na na, hey hey, GOODBYE!!!

Yes - it appears that one of the members is holding a handle of vodka in the background of one of the bid day pictures.

Look, they're entitled to their views. 100%! If this is how they want to go, more power to them. I'm glad they chose to disaffiliate instead of tank the Pi Phi chapter.

carnation 02-04-2024 01:38 PM

They have tried for *years* to tank the whole organization.

YIKES. I always wonder about liability when I see stuff like this. It’s all fun and games until someone gets seriously hurt or worse from drinking. I hope they know what they’re doing.

When I was a bartender, we had to take this statewide training and I learned that I could personally be sued if I over-served someone and they wound up, for example, in a serious alcohol related accident. Me personally, not just the bar.

I agree. The debt needs to be repaid to Pi Beta Phi.

Sidenote:

In Sigma Chi, if your chapter closes (either voluntarily or involuntarily) and the Fraternity returns to campus at a later date; any moneys owed by the original chapter members are now the responsibility of the new chapter members (not personal dues, but other chapter financials). Some associate chapters are in debt right away for about $400 or so. Others are on the hook for a butt-load of money. Usually, alumni will pitch in to help out.

Oh my! Are the students aware of this when they join?

This would be my question. Are the students aware that they have no liability insurance should a guest or sister be injured at a social event? Do they realize as a single organization they will not have alumnae, nor an NHQ to contact in case of emergency?
