Bad Table Manners
 

You know when you’re eating with other people at a dinner table or restaurant table, what kind of bad table manners have you seen? What kind of bad table manners irritate you?

For me it’s when someone just can’t stop talking while they’re eating, and with their mouth open, with small particles of food occasionally coming out of their talking mouth. I don’t like talking while I eat. I like to eat first, then we talk — not completely silent at the table, but I prefer more eating and less talking.

What say you?

So many many moons ago when I was still a single gal, and I went on a first and only date with a guy, I couldn't even tell you his name or barely what he looked like. We met for a bit to eat at a place not to fancy maybe a step up from Panera. I remember vividly when the food came he hovered over his plate and proceeded to shovel food in his mouth like he had been alone in the woods for six months with no food.

While I think he was nice enough, the thought that kept going through my head was can I watch this man eat his food like this for many many years...the answer was no, and there was no second date either.

Lmfao!!! Hahahahaha!! Sounds like he didn’t have any home training. Either that, or he didn’t get enough to eat at times as a kid.

I mean from my recollection, he was a decent looking guy, and seemed to have gainful employment so on paper what seemed to be a decent catch. Yeah honestly, after that date, I carefully assessed any other dates in how the ate.

I mean if it was a case he didn't get enough to eat as a kid, that I can certainly have empathy for. But it just seemed so unexpected in contrast to his presentation on the whole. I just to joke that I was the queen of one date wonders.

A few of our foreign exchange students, all tiny girls, would shovel food into their mouths like there was no tomorrow. I am assuming this was the custom in their countries. All left a couple of sizes bigger.

I can see if it’s kids to some degree, carnation. I’m talking more about adult bad table manners because adults should know better.

Since I have misophonia, I cannot eat with anyone whose food I can hear or see. I can tolerate taking a bite of carrot or such, but that's stretching it.

I'm not proud of this, but it's very real to me.

Thse kids are 16-18 and should know better! We warned them that American kids wouldn't sit with them at lunch if they snarfed their food like that. One never learned.

This should be a thread where we discuss what we wish we could do at the dinner table, outside of our own house. Of course, I have table manners, but when I’m at home, I have none. The reason I can’t live with anybody. Food is food, to me. I consume mine to survive. How I get it in my mouth, I don’t care. As long as it gets in there, that works for me.

Met through online dating, if someone set me up on a blind date and that's what I observed, I'd never let that person set me up again. :p I think we might have spoken on the phone once to set up the date. I had a rule back then is that if I met you through an online dating site, we have to have at least one conversation by phone before I'm willing to meet you.

Mind you I sort of broke my own rule when I met my now husband. We texted a bit for about a week before we met for dinner. At the end of our date, he said to me call me so I know that you made it home ok (which was thoughtful). I then said, oh we can finally speak by phone? He likes to share that bit of trivia with people whenever they ask how we met.

All of what y’all said, plus elbows/leaning on the table, which might be because my mother would nail us for it if we did it.

And I am now traumatized by Phrozen Sands cereal crunching.

Lol I was thinking when you said “tiny” I was thinking they were all little kids. Yeah, 16-18, they should know better by that age..

This reminds me of those expensive ass restaurants that are $75/plate and they give you small ass portions of food. They’ll make it look decorative and all, which I don’t understand since I’m going to eat it anyway. I got a gift card to a restaurant like that for two once. I took my girl and neither one of us left full. Who cares about the presentation. Good grief. I hear you.

This was just a few years ago...I was having lunch with one of my co-workers. Towards the end of the meal she pulled out one of those floss picks and began flossing her teeth right at the table. I lost my appetite immediately.

When someone orders a sandwich with mayonnaise on it and after they take a bite of the sandwich or hamburger, some of the mayonnaise ends up on the corner of their mouth. And then they’ll just keep talking with the mayonnaise on the corner of their mouth. Any kind of ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise or sauces that end up on the corner of their mouth is really gross. When it happens I’ll go like “Umm.. you have.. um.. this like..” while pointing at the corner of my own mouth where the mayonnaise is on theirs. Mayonnaise is disgusting as it is.

You are my people! I hate to say this but my father in law is a loud eater and I always make a point to not sit near him at family dinners. I may have contemplated murder of a few people. :D:D
