Greeks In Sitcoms

Does anyone remember which fraternity and sorority the Happy Days gang joined? Somehow, I thought they were Beta Theta Pi and Delta Gamma.

Are there other sitcoms with fraternal members?

SquirrelyDays 08-09-2021 09:58 AM

"Bye Bye Blackball" episode of Happy Days: Richie, Ralph and Potsie endure the harassment of "hell week" to prove themselves worthy to enter their college fraternity, Phi Kappa Nu.

SquirrelyDays 08-09-2021 10:01 AM

"Whose Face is This Anyway?" episode of Golden Girls:
Rose and Blanche have an extended discussion of their sororities. Blanche says she was an Alpha Gam. Rose says she was an "Alpha Yam."

Incidentally, in real life the actress Eddi-Rue McClanahan who plays Blanche was a Kappa Alpha Theta.

"King Richard's Big Night" episode of Happy Days: Newly crowned Delta Gamma King, Richie Cunningham, loses his inhibitions and offends his friends.

SquirrelyDays 08-09-2021 10:06 AM

BJ Hunnicutt of MASH 4077 (played by Mike Farrell) was educated at Stanford University and was a member of the "Tau Phi Epsilon" fraternity.

SquirrelyDays 08-09-2021 11:40 AM

Hayden Fox (played by Craig T Nelson) of "Coach" is a Beta Theta Pi. One episode shows his pledge paddle on the wall.

On “Ozzie and Harriet”, Ricky’s older brother David was in a fraternity in real life, and they mentioned it on the show. I’m thinking maybe Kappa Sigma?

You got it!
I guess many of the details of the show mirrored the real-life experiences of the actors.

Do I remember once seeing a Sigma Delta Tau sorority paddle on that show's wall, too?

SquirrelyDays 08-09-2021 08:28 PM

I don't know about that, but Tootie on "The Facts of Life" pledged "Gamma Gamma Mu." She didn't initiate, though

I imagine there are a lot more sitcoms with made-up orgs than real orgs represented.

That storyline in The Facts of Life is where I first became interested in sororities!

Bubba on Mama’ Family joined a fraternity at his junior college and went away on a “Hell’s Weekend” retreat. I remember distinctly he was talking about getting hazed and I asked my mom why someone would put themselves through all that lol.

The fraternity was called Sigma Alpha Pi, and he had a shirt that said (erroneously but funnily) SAP. He was proud to be a SAP, lol.

Danny Thomas

There was an episode I remember seeing in The Danny Thomas Show re-runs where his daughter, Terry, and her friend want to pledge the elite/exclusive High School Sorority, Psi Psi Psi, but she is afraid her father's show business work is too low class for the daughters of surgeons, attorneys, etc. Uncle Toulouse made an appearance.

I think Rachel on Friends was a "Kappa Kappa Delta". I don't think they ever mentioned if Monica was in a sorority.

And don't forget Phoebe! She was in Thigh Mega Tampon. They were really huge, but they were shut down when Regina Phalange died of alcohol poisoning.

There was an episode of Last Man Standing where Mandy rushes for a sorority. She pledges "Kappa Kappa Nu"; but, the letters on her shirt say "Kappa Kappa Pi". She later drops out of the sorority when she realizes that her boyfriend, Kyle, isn't really welcome at Greek events.

21 Jump Street - Hell Week episode

The crew is investigating a rape on a college campus and infiltrates “Pi Nu Fraternity” and “Delta Rho Chi Fraternity”

That is so weird. Throughout my whole life at any campus where I worked, volunteered, or was Greek, I never heard anyone even hint that a non-Greek date wasn't welcome.

My mom was pretty severely harassed by sorority women on her campus because she was a GDI dating a fraternity man (my dad, a TKE). When I wanted to join a sorority, she was dead set against it because of how sorority women had treated her in college. My dad was supportive though so I went ahead with it. After our first mother-daughter tea, my mom changed her mind because my sisters were so warm and friendly.

That's good! I married an independent and so did all of my Greek kids except one and none of the spouses were harassed.

Six of my Alpha Gam sisters and I all married men from the same fraternity and we are all divorced so... lol.

I can't find a shot to screen grab, but Fred Savage, who is an SAE from Stanford University, starred on a short-lived TV show called "Working." Any scenes from his apartment showed his SAE paddle mounted on the wall.

Those women were jealous of your Mom. I mean, there's only so many Tekes available. ;)

We were watching Everybody Loves Raymond the other, the episode called The Breakup Tape. Raymond's college girlfriend leaves a message on his answering machine to break up with him. He goes on to mention that he went to a Kappa Delt party with her.

You say that, and yet on my campus the joke was that TKE stood for 'Tau Kappa Everyone' because they were the largest fraternity. Even now, after I moved to the other side of the country, I've stumbled across 3-4 TKEs from my school!

The judges would have also accepted "Tau Kappa Hair Salon".
