Wow, congrats! I looked up her and she seems very impressive. Her platform, Mental Health, is a cause near and dear to me - I work in the mental health field (not military, but general public). If she can chip away at the stigma in the military and also the lay public, that would be amazing; her personal story makes the platform all the more powerful. More Americans than ever, post-pandemic, are in need of care, yet the stigma stops so many from pursuing care (that and insurance issues. When insurance companies start treating mental health like they do physical health, we'll have a lot to celebrate because in my experience, so many physical issues stem from mental health issues, not to mention so many societal issues). OK, off my soapbox, congrats again!!

Congratulations and best wishes to your niece!

Is this the first time we've had a Greek Chat member with a relative competing in the Miss America pageant?

SWTXBelle 06-28-2021 07:42 PM

We are very proud of her - win, lose, or draw, she has come a long way and done it all with grace. Her platform is SO important. She was in Texas last week, giving out the scholarship in honor of her deceased sister, whom many of you remember from the terrible time we went through when she drowned.

Theta1234 06-28-2021 07:46 PM

Add in Miss Texas 2021 Mallory Fuller. She's a Theta and an Aggie '20.

SWTXBelle 06-28-2021 09:19 PM

Miss Texas - Mallory Fuller - Kappa Alpha Theta

(It won't let me just edit my initial post)

ChioLu 07-03-2021 02:53 PM

Wow, that’s 16 sorority women competing for Miss America 2022. Are there still more state competitions to be decided?

I think there are about 4 left to go.

Did it for you. It really should have allowed you to do so, but I'll keep checking in case it does not.

Miss Mississippi - Holly Brand, Alpha Gamma Delta, University of Alabama

Last time my home state had a Miss America was 1986 with Susan Akin...from Meridian, MS which is where Holly is from. Lots of Meridian girls go to Alabama for school, it's only about an hour away.

Susan Akin crowned 1987 winner Kellye Cash, whose daughter Tatum will compete this December as Miss Virginia (as already listed in this thread).

I believe this is the second time a former Miss America's daughter has competed for the crown, the first being Rebecca King's daughter Diana competing as Miss Colorado for the 2012 crown.

Leah Roddenberry, Miss Florida, ADPi, U of FL

Wow! Her sister, Madison, was Miss Texas 2018. Is Madison also a Theta?

Yes, she is!

ChioLu 07-20-2021 01:49 PM

So 19 of the 51 contestants for Miss America 2022 are sorority women! That’s 33%. I like those odds.

Pageant is scheduled for December 2021. No exact date listed yet. Not sure what network it’s going to be on, but I think last time it may have been on NBC.

nyapbp 07-20-2021 09:02 PM

There are 23 sorority women competing. https://wp.me/P20I1i-5tU

ChioLu 07-21-2021 12:57 AM

Even better! What’s that %?

45.1%

ChioLu 07-21-2021 01:17 PM

I used a calculator last night and got that too but I kept thinking, “wow, that’s a high % — that can’t be right.” I’m glad it is! All states have decided their winners so everything is set for December.

Since a few contestants have relatives that were also pageant winners, wonder if “legacy” status is going to be a talking point. Hmmm.

Sister Havana 07-21-2021 02:21 PM

14 different organizations represented. (13 NPC, one NPHC)

I'm not surprised. She is studying music education, her platform is Band Together: Music Education for All, and her talent is a drum solo.

Cheerio 11-17-2021 04:40 PM

Just as a reminder:

This year's pageant final is being held on

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 16th, 2021.

THIS IS A DIFFERENT NIGHT OF THE WEEK FROM PREVIOUS YEARS.

I have yet to read directly on the official Miss America website whether this will be a televised event on free tv. You might think since this is their 100th anniversary they'd want to let long-time fans without cable, or the funds to pay for a special tv show, view the event.

The current Miss America, Camille Schrier, will also be featured in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC-TV November 25th, 2021.

SWTXBelle 11-25-2021 01:52 PM

Miss Washington - Maddie Louder - Gamma Phi Beta - Oklahoma City University

NCSigma 11-25-2021 07:50 PM

Miss West Virginia, Jaelyn Wratchford, is a Tri Sigma from Shepherd University.

honeychile 11-26-2021 09:58 AM

WOWZA! That makes not quite half - it must be a record!

nyapbp 12-01-2021 02:28 PM

Miss Washington is an Alpha Phi

She's an alum of the Alpha Phi chapter at OCU. The Gamma Phi chapter there has produced many contestants, so I had to double check with Alpha Phi's HQ.

It will be televised on Peacock.

How disappointing the event is on a weeknight, which is not a good time to quickly program the live event for national free tv viewing. And for their 100th anniversary year, too! Guess I'll do what I did when it aired on CMT for a bit, ask my sister to record it and view it when we get together for the holidays.
