Madea's Family Reunion

One of my students loaned me the videotape and I am over here DYING!! Madea is an off the hook, gun-toting, cussing Grandma.

Has anyone seen this play? Check it out if you get the chance. It is hilarious.

Special1920 09-29-2002 11:02 AM

NOPE

I have not seen this play, but a 1000 plays like it I'm sure. I'm just tired of the same old "black" plays. They are starting to become so Amos & Andy like. Just not funny to me. I wish someone make a play with some substance. I have been going to a few playhouse around Chicago, that's where I have found the best plays in the last few years. A few months ago I went to a play called, "A TRIBUTE TO PHYLISS HYMAN" It was excellent.

CrimsonTide4 09-29-2002 12:55 PM

I finished watching Madea's Family Reunion and my student also had Diary of a Mad Black Woman on the video as well. I was in pain at all the laughter. What's even more ironic is that Madea referenced the reason that Rosa Parks stayed on the bus is because Rosa took Madea's man.

At any rate, I thoroughly enjoyed it and my student is making me a copy of these 2 plays. I need to see when he is coming to Charlotte.

Ooh Ooh

My great Aunt first showed everyone Madea's Family Reunion at my cousins wedding earlier this year, and then I saw Diary of a Mad Black Woman at the beauty salon a month ago. That woman is off da chain!!! She reminds me soooo much of my great grandmother who passed several years ago. She was the same type: gun-carryin, cussin, smokin', poker playin, whiskey drinkin'...just a TRIP and to boot, she had a gold tooth in the front of her mouth and EVERYBODY else in our family was saved and went to church except her. Ironically, we called her "Ma'Dear"

The part of Madea's Family Reunion I love is when everyone starts singing gospel songs and Madea starts singing like she is about to say "I know I've been changed," but instead she says "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII.........I be strokin'!!!":D Pure hilarity. And everyone can relate to at least one family member from their own family in that play.

CrimsonTide4 09-29-2002 03:33 PM

IMO in Diary of a Mad Black Woman Daddy Charles was FUNNIER with his Anna Mae Bullock routine and his The Color Purple comments.

MaDear did not have to call Charles Teddy Pendergrass. When she did that, I flatlined fa real.

Look out for MaDear's class reunion. I had to subscribe to Tyler's mailing list because I want to see one of his plays LIVE.

Madea had me hollering about her crackheaded granddaughter and when she did I beeeeeeeeee stroking and her cracks on the no neck having neighbor, I was CTFU really loudly.

Her and those guns need to stop, fa real.

FLKING 09-30-2002 12:17 PM

Tyler Perry's are just wonderful. Ladies, you have not seen anything until you are live and in the audience. I have seen both plays live here in Chicago and half of the things Ma'dear does is not even captured on the video. When the plays come to your city, spend the extra cash and get front row seats. Ma'dear has been known to have the audience participate. My favorite of the two is Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Another play to look out for that is traveling from city to city is called “The Other Woman.” This is also a Gospel play with many messages. I saw this play in May, and I have forgotten the name of the writer, but if anyone is interested, I am sure I can get the information.

Both Medea's Family reunion and Diary of a Mad Black Woman are wonderful! I was LMAO!! Too funny- I wish that they would tour through Iowa, but I know that that is just *wishful thinking!* The play When a Woman's Fed Up did tour through Iowa, and that play was the bomb as well! If there are any other websites that you know of with play's tour dates, please post them!

Also, Michael Baisden's play men cry in the dark is in the play form, I've heard- does anyone know about that??

ZChi4Life 10-01-2002 08:56 AM

just saw it

I just saw Madea's Family Reunion this weekend and it was hilarious! I recommend it to anyone looking for a quick laugh.

DSTia,

I saw this play this past spring as well and it is a wonderful play. Allen Payne does and excellent job portraying his character; not to mention the scene were he takes his shirt off! :D Because of time limitations, the play really does not get into all of the characters in the book. But if the play makes it to a city near you, I highly recommend you go and see it.

CrimsonTide4 10-01-2002 10:55 AM

There is a thread for Men Cry in the Dark already that I pulled to the top this morning.

I've never been interested in thses types of plays before but my next door neighbor brought over some tapes. Since I'm new down here I didn't want to be rude so I watched them. But I will say they were seriously funny.

I saw "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" and "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" live. HILARIOUS! In both shows, my stomach hurt for the rest of the evening because I was laughing so hard. Tyler Perry is now my favorite playwrite of all times because he has a message with all the laughter, and it's not run of the mill "Chitlin' Circuit" material.

Just to see Madea get that attitude and bob her head that hard that the wig is rocking is funny. And the guns. She actually reminds me of my late aunt in a lot of ways.

@ StraightBOS - that Rosa story.... ROTFL

Y'all have made it that my mother and I (we both love him) have to see "Madea's Family Reunion".

JJSP01 10-07-2002 10:21 AM

I saw Diary of a Mad Black Woman when it came to Baltimore last year...it was such a funny play. I was in tears!:D Madea's Family Reunion is coming to Morgan State University very soon (either this coming weekend or next weekend). I will have to get my ticket because I know it will be off the chain! Tyler Perry is a mess!:D

yasava 10-13-2002 10:59 PM

crashing the board just to say...

Thanks for the thread! When I saw it a few weeks back, I went to Tyler Perry's website and decided to surprise my mother with tickets for her birthday. We saw Madea's family reunion last night in Detroit. IT was HILARIOUS! I've got the tape already, but it was so much better in person and the play changes with each city it goes to and gets funnier with time.

Thanks again! :D

CrimsonTide4 02-23-2003 09:14 PM

I ordered and watched last weekend, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, good play but not as good IMO as Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion.

Saturday cannot come soon enough. :)

Mz Destiny 02-23-2003 10:58 PM

Madea's Class Reunion was absolutely hilarious!!! Tyler Perry said that it's actually still a work in progress, and that after this play, he's going to be taking a break because he's bringing Madea to TV!!! He just signed a deal with CBS, and the show is in development so we'll see what happens!

AKA2D '91 02-24-2003 09:17 AM

I heard it 'Class Reunion' was good. I also heard that the bellhop (which Tyler plays) was hilarious. I'm checking it out in Dallas next month.

royalpinkastry 02-25-2003 12:14 AM

I saw four of his plays, one in person, and three on video tape. He is definitely an exceptional writer and defintely captivates his audience. I can't wait to see Madea's Class Reunion in April when it comes to DC...I missed the one in Hampton because it was sold out :(.

CrimsonTide4 03-02-2003 09:53 AM

OMG, the play was fierce and funny and hilarious. I laughed and I teared up. Tyler Perry took me there. It is TRULY nothing like watching the video.

He has 6 shows in Charlotte and all 6 were sold out.

You laugh from beginning to almost the end. The singing was in your face and it sent chills down my spine. Oh and for those wondering WHERE has Cheryl "Pepsii" Riley been? Right now she has a starring role in MADEA'S CLASS REUNION.

I bought the souvenir booklet and am being blessed by reading that as well.

He has another play coming that will star Kelly Price and Johnny Gill.

Oh and for those of you all who love Mr. Brown -- get ready get ready to LYBO @ him AGAIN. Yes he still has ashy knees. :D

E-Mail from Tyler Perry

Hi,

This is Tyler.

I wanted to take a time out here and thank you for all of your love and support.

I am celebrating my tenth year in the business and this show, "Madea's Class Reunion" has been by far the most sucessful yet. I am so grateful to GOD for allowing all of you all be a part of my destiny. Again, thank you.

The Class Reunion Tour
We started this tour in January 2003 and since this will be my last tour for a while, it has been very difficult for people to get seats. Two ladies in Dallas started fighing in the aisle! I aint lyin', they must be kin to Madea. However, on a serious note, it's been a good problem for me to have and I am gratetful.

The War in Iraq
While our country is at war, please let's remember to pray for our troops. I have received over 27,000 names on our special prayer list, so when it pops up on the website please, if you don't mind, whisper a prayer for them and for their families. I'm sure they need and would appreciate it.

I will be closing the prayer list on the website on April 20th so that I can print it and take it to the altar at my church where we will pray over the names of our troops.

New Cities for 2003
I read the message board daily and I do see that you all are asking me to come to your city. It has been amazing watching some of you travel for hours to be at the shows. I know that the videos are good, but there's nothing like seeing it live. Am I right? Madea is a fool and I don't know what she is going to do from night to night.

With that in mind, I have decided to try and hit as many new cities as I can before this tour is over. I have heard you and will try to get to your city or somewhere close.

I thank you all and may God bless you. Please try to get your tickets early, people have been left out because all of the shows have been sold out. If you don't believe me then read some of the messages on the message board. Here is a listing of some of the cities that I'm coming to (listed in alphabetical order):

Biloxi, MS (new)
Birmingham, AL (new)
Hampton, VA (new)
Indianapolis, IN
Los Angeles, CA (new)
Miami, FL (new)
Oakland, CA (new)
Portland, OR (new)
Richmond, VA (new)
Seattle, WA (new)
St. Louis, MO (new)
Winston-Salem, NC (new)

We are still finalizing other new cities like Denver and Phoenix. For more information please visit: http://www.tylerperry.com/shows

Between now and December 2003, we will play at least fifteen weeks in new cities. Do you want to know how I choose these new cities? I look at the message board and the mailing list. We pull up zip codes to see where most of the requests are coming from so please get your friends and family to sign up at TylerPerry.com.

New Mailing List Update System
We have improved our mailing list program so make sure that you enter your zip code when signing up. Many people were not receiving the ticket sale updates because we did not have a correct zip code on file. A separate email will be sent tomorrow describing this new system.

What's Coming Up?
In December I am taking my first break! I have been traveling and touring for five years straight and have decided that it's time for a long and much overdue break. I will be taking a year or two off.

During this time I will be doing a lot of things that I have neglected to do like taking care of Tyler for a while. Dating, partying, writing and a lot of vacationing--that is, until the T.V. deal with C.B.S. causes me to start working full time again.

It looks like I might only get a few weeks off before the T.V. show kicks off.

A New Play
During the T.V. show, my band and crew will still have to work and so will people that I like, like Brown and Cora, so I will be writing a show and putting them in it, along with my friend, Kelly Price. So, look for it! It will either be called "He Proposed to Me" or "Why Did I Get Married?"

Toll Free 800 number
In an effort to cut down on some of the losses that my company has been experiecing from the bootleggers, I have created a phone number for ordering videos. The toll free number is 1-800-49-TYLER.

Please call and place your orders or let someone know who is not a member of the Email Club or who doesn't have Internet access that they can call and order.

So You Want to Know How I Find Talent for My Shows?
In July I will be participating in a talent showcase called "Gospel Dreams". I will be hosting and looking for talented people to either work directly with or introduce into the entertainment industry. This will take place in Atlanta in July. Here is the official announcement.

Tyler Perry and Madea are excited to announce their hosting of Gospel Dream. Gospel Dream is the gospel music industry's answer to American Idol. The Gospel Dream Talent Search will create an opportunity for undiscovered individuals to showcase their musical talent to the nation while being evaluated by some of the gospel music industry's finest.

The Gospel Dream Talent Search will be taped for television in Atlanta, Ga on July 9, 2003, during the 10th year celebration of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International Conference. Accomplished producer and composer, Elvin Ross serves as Executive Producer and Bishop Paul S. Morton, Senior Producer. For more information on Gospel Dream log onto http://www.gospeldream.net

The Class Reunion Video
The video will be recorded in September in Detroit and Hampton, VA and will be available in October 2003.

There will be a lot of extra footage on the DVD, so get ready!

I love you all and again I say thanks and God bless you.

Tyler
