My daughter as well. Best of luck to both of you! Hoping for smiles and a positive experience and no tears over the phone.

BBH 01-03-2018 01:56 PM

My daughter is rushing as well. She just texted a copy of her three day schedule. Two houses that I know she liked from some fall events are early on day 2 for her. She has a pretty good attitude going in. She knows IU is a difficult process and is keeping an open mind.

I feel bad for all the PNM's and RG's having to be out in this weather. Good luck to all.

lyrespearls 01-03-2018 02:12 PM

Count me as another PNM mom and this is my second time going through IU recruitment. While it can be a brutal numbers game, it definitely seems to have improved.

Does anyone have any idea of numbers? I have heard anywhere from 1300 PNM's (which seems really low) to 1900 (more realistic). Also, I am wondering what the minimum quota has been set at?

Best of luck to all the young women and moms! :)

On last year's thread, there was recent discussion of the upcoming 2018 recruitment. One of the members there reported that "around 1800 are registered."

My goddaughter/cousin does, too, and her mom (my first cousin) is an IU grad and is Greek. Her older daughter - my other goddaughter - is a senior at IU and chose not to go through rush. My cousin said she knew my younger goddaughter would want to go through, and this would be the only chance she has to get a legacy. :-) However, my cousin serves on advisory boards for her chapter, so she knows exactly how IU's rush is, and she has stressed to my goddaughter to keep an open mind and just be happy ending up anywhere!

BUDelta4Life 01-03-2018 04:23 PM

Oh, and my goddaughter just texted that they're getting ready to go to their first chapter, which is her legacy chapter. I told her to be real, keep an open mind, have fun, and try not to freeze!

DoctorD 01-03-2018 04:34 PM

I have a niece in the game as well. Fingers crossed.

IowaPiPhi 01-03-2018 09:20 PM

Best of luck to everyone! I also told her to keep an open mind and try to enjoy meeting new people. IU is much more stressful than Iowa was.

I heard they are only doing 2 pref parties. I hope they can place as many girls as possible.

IndianaSigKap 01-03-2018 09:25 PM

As far as I know, the PNMs will be allowed into the back stairwells and out of the way areas during the time between chapters. :) I hope so, it's brutal out there right now.

Best of luck to everyone involved--PMNs and their nervous moms, sorority women, advisors, Rho Gams, etc.

I can tell you from personal experience that every chapter at IU has something valuable to offer a PNM!

I wonder if that is a new change or a typo on the website. The IU Panhellenic website indicates that PNMs can return up to a maximum of 3 for preference. Here: http://www.iupanhellenic.org/schedul...ruitment-2017/

However in the FAQs, regarding MRABA, it encourages listing "two preferences" -- http://www.iupanhellenic.org/frequently-asked-questions

The Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement is a card on which you list, in order of your preference, the sororities from whom you are willing to accept an invitation to membership. National Panhellenic Conference encourages you to list two preferences; however, it is important not to list a sorority that you have no interest in joining.

Maybe one of you can have your daughter confirm the schedule as presented to the PNMs?

My daughter did say that her Rho Gam told them they would attend 2 pref parties and when I pointed out the discrepancy, she was pretty confident that it had changed. My older daughter attended 3 and preffed (sp?) 3 back in 2014 but I remember it being said somewhere on the forum that some schools were changing to 2 vs 3. Was Panhel's decision to do this (assuming it's true) based on the girls now being guaranteed a bid if they maximize all their options?

IowaPiPhi 01-03-2018 10:58 PM

Yes, my daughter said her schedule states 2 pref parties. I remember reading somewhere, maybe here(?), that there was talk of cutting one pref party.

USCofSEC 01-03-2018 11:03 PM

Welcome All PNM mom's! This year my DD is on the other side meeting all your precious ones. She said things went well. There will only be two choices of preferences if girls maximums options. Compared to last year, when they had three. Some may wind up with one only preference!
Please encourage your daughters to stay in the process IU has 22 wonderful Sororities! Good Luck keep updating us on your daughters progress.

PNMmom18 01-04-2018 12:22 AM

Hey everyone my daughter is rushing as well. She said it was a bit cold but she had a great time. She is our second daughter going through the rush process at IU. On her schedule it says Preference Round 1 & 2 then optional 3rd round and optional 4th round. Unsure what that means. My oldest was a RG and they had 3 Prefs. I am thankful she's keeping an open mind and not stuck on her Legacy house. Tomorrow is a long day for them hopefully they stay warm. Good luck to all the PNMs, Moms and families.

Thanks for sending this! I wonder if the optional designation is tbd based on numbers? I wonder what the Rho Gammas said about that. I will wait until Friday to ask. Don't want to stress her out.

At Iowa, the chapters made the cut first, then you selected from the available houses on your list. My understanding is that it is the opposite at IU and the PNM picks 16 and hopes that they get an invite from the houses they picked. Is that correct?

Those are optional additional parties for the sororities who have larger PNM pools at preference. PNMs can only attend a maximum of two preference parties at IU this year.

No. The PNM ranks her chapters and the sororities rank the PNMs. It's a lot more complex, but basically with RFM, the PNM only gets invited back to the parties of the chapters she ranked high if she was high enough on those sororities' lists. Although the process is called mutual selection, a PNM won't get an invite back unless she's ranked high enough on that sorority's list, no matter how high she ranks them. (She can also be invited back to her bottom choices if they ranked her high enough but some of the sororities she ranked higher did not rank her high enough to get an invite.)

IowaPiPhi 01-04-2018 01:33 AM

^^^ thanks for the clarification!

BBH 01-04-2018 08:50 AM

Heard late from my D. She said she had fun and overall last night was a good way to get familiar with what to expect. She enjoyed all the houses she visited. Said she was double rushed twice, the first house and then one other. She liked it at the first house because she felt it calmed her and the other girl down a bit and make it easier at the next house when it was just her 1x1. The last visit was with an unhoused chapter. She said those girls were really sweet but it was difficult because the way the room was set up it was very hard to hear and several times she had to ask the member to repeat her question because she couldn't hear it.

She was more excited about today's list of chapters to visit. Especially her 1st and 4th house she goes to today. I know these two will be high on her list but she understands that might not work out so keeping an open mind with all of them.

BBH 01-04-2018 11:32 PM

Anyone know the number of girls that actually started? My D called us tonight, had a very good day today and really enjoyed her visits. Before going back to school she was given a PNM number but that changed, she said she moved up 4 spots. Her roommate moved up about 40 and another friend near the end of the alphabet moved up over 100 spots. We take that to mean that at least 100 girls who registered never started the process either for GPA or other reasons.

Despite the cold, she said she is having fun. Her roommate however is sick and as soon as today was over went straight to bed. Feel bad for everyone having to deal with this bitter cold.

It's brutal out there, for sure. I hope all of the women can get some rest tomorrow evening, I think the parties are over mid afternoon.

GreekOne 01-06-2018 09:58 AM

Hoping that everyone's daughters, nieces and friends made it through the first round jitters and the brutal cold. My daughter called me this morning when she got her list. She is tired already but eager to see the process through. These are some loooong days!

After first round she had 4 absolute favorites. Three of those are included in her 16 schedule. She was disappointed about being cut by one of her top 4 but I am happy that she is embracing my advice about staying positive. I know it can get a lot worse as the process proceeds and her favorites may change a few more times as she meets more women.

Hoping that the rest of you, following your loved ones progress, are receiving positive news.

BBH 01-06-2018 10:41 AM

Mixed news from my daughter. She was only asked back to 5 and one of those is one she had no connection with at all and had as 22 on her list so was surprised to see them. Only three that she had in her top 16 are on her list including her favorite.

Most of her friends are off at their parties so she is alone in the dorm as her first one isn't until late this afternoon. She wasn't expecting a full list but thought she would have had a few more. She is a legacy at one chapter and put that on her registration form so wondering if that hurt her. We doubt its a GPA cut as she had a 4.0 last semester.

We will see what happens this round, and if her feelings change at all about all 5 that she has invites to. She felt a good connection to two on her list, average connection on the other two and zero connection to her last one. We will see if that changes after this weekend.

GreekOne 01-06-2018 10:55 AM

@BBH, as everyone always says, it takes just one. If she had a 4.0 last semester, she is clearly a smart young lady. Hopefully, she will stay positive and find a home at one of those still on her schedule. On a positive note, she did not have to stand outside in sub zero temps for an hour this morning....a part of this process that my daughter is quite unhappy about! Best of luck to her!

If you read some of the recruitment threads, you'll note that many times a chapter a pnm feels no connection to initially turns out, through the course of recruitment, to actually be her "home". Remind your daughter that she's met the tiniest of tiny fractions of the members, and keep an open mind. Hope it all goes well for her!

BBH 01-06-2018 11:37 AM

We reminded her that it only takes one and we discussed over break how brutal the process can be. She seems to be in good spirits but we will see after this round. If she carries all 5 through to the next round then I think that will help her feel better, assuming she can move on. Of the 5 on her list the three that she had ranked the highest are all this afternoon.

In a way that is lucky as it gives her time to relax and get over the fact she was cut so heavily. She does have an open mind and we will see if her feelings change about the one chapter after tomorrow.

IowaPiPhi 01-06-2018 12:11 PM

Heard from my daughter this morning. She got cut from some of her favorites, but is happy with her list. Hoping they can all avoid frostbite in this process!

BBH, sending positive vibes your way. I read a bunch of posts on Sororitygirl101.com last night and I am also of the view that it only takes one. Hopefully they can make connections with girls who will become their lifelong friends.

Is there any way to know how many girls are in the process?

IndianaSigKap 01-06-2018 01:48 PM

<<Is there any way to know how many girls are in the process?>>

The only people who have access to those numbers are the recruitment teams from the chapters and Panhellenic. It really doesn't matter how many women are left in the process since IU does not utilize the quota/total portion of RFM. The number of women left does not affect the number of women invited back to each chapter.

I will say that I have heard from friends who have relatives in the process and they gave me 7-16 as the number of invitations today for their PMNs.

I know it's hard being on the other side and watching loved ones go through the process, keep in mind that it's not a perfect process and it never will be. There are so many factors that go into making the decisions for the chapter members (GPA, the luck of the draw, conversation, time of day, etc.) and for the PNMs (time of day, pre-existing expectations, tent talk, the cold and the toll it takes on you, etc). It's hard not to take it personally when a chapter doesn't invite a PNM back, but sometimes the women in the chapter just see the PNM being a better fit for another chapter than theirs. That can also be a positive thing, maybe the PNM is really into sports and their chapter isn't into intramurals or doesn't have a bike team and the PNM really wouldn't enjoy that chapter. Being released isn't always a negative thing. It can give PNMs a chance to better get to know a chapter in which they might be better suited and give the PNM a chance to make a genuine connection elsewhere. As I have said many times and will keep saying, every chapter at IU has something valuable to offer!!

PNMmom18 01-06-2018 03:07 PM

My daughter got back 8. She was a little down this morning because a few houses she got cut from she liked. She was also happy with what she has left. So a mixed bag. I think it's just as hard for the moms as the girls. Thankful she has my older daughter to talk to since she's been through IU recruitment and understands the emotions. Sending positive vibes to everyone!

IowaPiPhi 01-06-2018 03:24 PM

I swear, I'm not a crazy helicopter mom. It is just so hard when you have to watch your child go through this process! I agree, it's not perfect, but at least it is better than it was in the past.

Sending good vibes and prayers out to all PNMs and their families!

Lol I should probably make that disclaimer as well. I think it's just harder being so far away.

BBH 01-06-2018 04:51 PM

Yeah, not helicoptering either. Haven't really offered up much unless she specifically asked for advice. I've stayed out of the process and her decision to even go through rush. I'm a big believer that things happen for a reason and if it was meant to be that she find a home then it will happen. If it doesn't, then it wasn't meant to be. You can't really do more than try your best and that is what she is doing.

ivyrose2 01-06-2018 04:59 PM

It's cold out there at IU this week!!! What a hard week for PMN's out there braving the cold!!! Are they still required to walk/run or take a bus (often full) to get between houses on time? Yikes!! Recruitment week at IU is IMO harder than pledge weeks!

ChioLu 01-06-2018 06:28 PM

Are there chapters who are still doing “bed rush”?

Yes, that is my understanding that they must take the bus or walk. Yikes, so cold to walk!
