That's true. With the exception of Dartmouth and Cornell (both of which are in very small, isolated areas), the Greek scene is low-key--for various reasons Princeton and Harvard don't even publicly recognize their fraternities and sororities--Princeton has "eating clubs" and Harvard is on the "house system", which are supposedly Greek alternatives. Columbia and Penn are both in bigger cities where there might not be that big of a demand to go Greek. Brown is just weird. Monetarily and administratively, the school is very supportive of the Greek system--most of our prominent alumni are/were Greek, but the student body as a whole isn't very supportive.

Anyway, I'm not a legacy to any NPC groups. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif Well, my daughter (if I have one) will be!

I used to work at Penn and they only have Spring Rush there. They have a decent sized greek system, with some houses. I would say they aren't out and about like Cornell, but they still have a respectable system with good organizations.

dzrose93 08-21-2001 02:08 PM

Although I'm not considered a legacy, my cousin is an Alpha Gamma Delta alumna. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

AOTLALA 08-21-2001 02:33 PM

My dad was a Kappa Sig at Cornell and they had a very active greek system while was there. I know there was a slight decline and a lot of houses went under because of numbers, but today Cornell is again a strong greek system. My dad had a ball being greek at Cornell and has the crazy stories to prove it. I was an Alpha Phi legacy, though there was no Alpha Phi at my school. But my lucky little brother, who does not want to rush, is a legacy of Kappa Sig(dad), SAE(grandfather) and Sigma Chi(other grandfather)of which all three are where he is at!!

Corbin Dallas 08-21-2001 03:10 PM

My uncle is a Theta Xi, and my cousin pledged Sigma Nu, but dropped out. Both were/are at Rose-Hulman.

My mother pledged Sigma Delta Tau but left school before she initiated. My aunt initiated into SDT. Other than that, I was the only Greek in the family until my cousin pledged Alpha Chi Omega this last winter (at Cornell).

KillarneyRose 08-22-2001 12:24 AM

Barbara, you mentioned that your cousin is an Alpha Chi Omega at Cornell. Have you noticed that greeks there are unusually visible compared to the other Ivies? My sister graduated from Cornell (hardcore GDI) and when I would go up to visit her I saw many people in letters which wasn't the case when I would visit friends at other Ivies.

finest_alum 08-22-2001 12:38 AM

First Greek in my family http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
My real big sister was a Sigma Nu little sister back in the day, but never in a sorority. And my brother pretty much lived at the Fiji house at U of Chicago, but didn't actually pledge. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
So I'm just starting the Greek legacy for us!!!!

PenguinTrax 08-22-2001 12:41 AM

Tracy,
I've never been on the Cornell campus, so I can't offer an opnion. I've also just recently met a woman that became at Chi Omega at Cornell.

I'm also the first Greek in my family! :) As far as I know, no one in my family has ever gone to a school with a Greek system. Well, my hypothetical future daughter gets to be a legacy :)

carnation 08-24-2001 07:07 PM

No true female legacies. just cousins in DZ (U. of Houston) and Kappa (U. of Texas). But....my oldest is an AOPi and the next 2 will rush in a year. Our 4th daughter doesn't want them to pledge Pi Phi or AOPi but rather 2 more sororities so that she, the queen, can possibly go to a bunch of prefs someday and truly choose the one she likes best since sororities are required to put legacies at their pref parties on the first bid list!

We think it'll be hysterical if our ninth daughter ends up a legacy to 9 different sororities!

deltajas 08-24-2001 07:15 PM

Hey
One of my cousin's is the president of her chapter of Alpha Xi Delta, and my other cousin is a Phi Kappa Tau
They are both my first cousins

newbie 08-24-2001 07:58 PM

My sister - Kappa Delta
My cousin (girl) - president of her Asian sorority a few years back...cannot remember what the letters were, though.

My other cousin (boy) - Phi Tau

TechAPhi 08-25-2001 02:03 AM

Mom - Alpha Phi
Sister - Alpha Phi
Auntie - Alpha Phi

I guess I was born to be an Alpha Phi! :)

Jen

dzsaigirl 08-25-2001 09:13 AM

Carnation, who is your DZ cousin at U of H? I am a DZ at U of H!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe I know her. Even if she is alum I might know her. What a small world!

Beryana 08-25-2001 10:08 AM

Since I'm the first one in my family to go to college I am definitely not a legacy. =) My cousin, however, is a member of Triangle and any girls that my brothers and I might have (the hypothetical children again!) will be a legacy of AOII.

Sarah

carnation 08-25-2001 10:32 AM

DZSAI, she was president of DZ in the mid-fifties so I bet you don't know her! But her maiden name was Jenilyn Foxworth. I can still remember her bringing her sisters over to my grandparents' house to practice for the Frontier Fiesta. Now she lives on some fantastic ranch in central Texas!

RxyChrldr 08-25-2001 04:21 PM

Hmm.. let's see.
Grandmother- AGD at Montana State
Dad-Lambda Chi Alpha at Dartmouth
Sister AOTT at U of Washington (my school)
Aunt- Alpha Phi at UW
Cousin-AGD but at UW

BrianMUDU 08-25-2001 04:43 PM

My brother was a Phi Tau, so I am the second person in my family to be Greek (I'm a DU).

TechADPI 08-25-2001 07:19 PM

My brother is a Theta Chi, and my soon to be sister in law is an ADPi also. Other than that, no one else in my family is Greek. Gotta start some where!:)

AGDLynn 08-25-2001 07:43 PM

Legacy

As you can see, I'm an AGD! (Sorry..I didn't intend for it to rhyme, lol). One brother is a Pike and the other is a Sigma Nu. One sis-in-law is a Delta Gamma and the ex-sis-in-law is in a sorority, but not sure which one...maybe Alpha Xi Delta or something other.

My cousin's son is also a Sigma Nu, but at different colleges.

I have 4 nieces so I hope one or all are AGD's, but if not, I just hope they will be as happy with their choice as I've been with mind. :)

Aphigal 08-25-2001 07:46 PM

My Mom - Alpha Phi
My Mother-in-law - Sigma Kappa
My sister-in-law - Alpha Phi (i rushed her in while I was dating her brother)

DPhiE205 09-15-2001 02:59 AM

erniegurl00 09-19-2001 11:33 PM

Technically I'm not a legacy, but I have a cousin in Phi Kappa Tau and Tri-Delt and an uncle who was a Pike. I'm proud to be the first Pi Phi of the family! :)

G8Ralphaxi 09-19-2001 11:43 PM

No "official" legacies in my family but I do have a few Greek connections ...

Aunt - Sigma Sigma Sigma at Florida State
Grandfather - Sigma Phi Epsilon at Temple (he actually was part of a local that became Sig Ep, so he was a colonizing brother of Sig Ep at Temple)
Cousin - Sig Ep at Johns Hopkins
Uncle - Kappa Alpha at U. of Florida

Me - Alpha Xi Delta! Woo! :D

aggieAXO 09-20-2001 01:42 AM

My Grandmother was a Delta Gamma at UC Berkeley (grad. in 1918, no chapter at A&M when I rushed :( )
cousin-theta
aunt-theta

crazyleggedsigma 09-20-2001 01:58 AM

Well, I'm technically not a legacy, but my Aunt is a Tri Delta. And they cut me on their first opportunity when I went through! But I love where I am. All that cheese you get from your PX really is true-you end up where you belong!

aggieAXO 09-20-2001 02:38 AM

Crazyleggedsigma-I just love your name!!!!!:)

AOX81 09-21-2001 05:16 PM

Not a whole lot of people in my family went to college so the number of Greeks is pretty small. I think that my mom's cousin was a Tri-Delt at Eastern Michigan. My stepdad has a couple of nieces but I'm not sure of their affiliations, I think one is also a Tri-Delt. My husband is a Lambda Chi Alpha. That's my story.

Have a nice day :)

Thanks! Did you read the story about it in ....whatever thread asked for the sources of our names? :D

To all of you-I forgot...My sons will be Lambda Chi Alpha legacies-that's what my Dad is! (at Kansas State, for anyone who goes there-write to me and I'll tell you a fun story about someone who lived in your house when it was still the PiPhi house...;) )

HeidiHo 09-21-2001 06:42 PM

Like many other posters, I'm not a true legacy to any NPC organization. I am(was?) a leg to Delta Delta Pi, a local at Eureka College in Ill. My grandma says that Tri Delt invited them to affiliate, but they(DDPi) declined. Sometimes I think my grandma's a little whack, so who really knows.
I do have random panhel & local connections.
My Dad's cousin- Phi Omega (local)
The first three cousins are sisters:
cousin- Kappa Alpha Theta at Northwestern
cousin- Kappa Delta at Susquehanna Univ.
cousin- Delta Zeta or Delta Gamma, at Ohio Wesleyan. I found out all of their sororities during rush last year & I just said "Oh, we don't have that here" & blew it off. :o
other cousin who has rushed since I did- Zeta Tau Alpha at Univ of Evansville
of course, me- Chi Omega at the Univ of Cincinnati

aggieAXO 09-21-2001 11:01 PM

crazylegged sigma

No I did not read the post thread of the origin of your name crazyleggedsigma-just curious as to how you got the name

I did not name the fraternity connections in my family:
grandfather delta Tau delta at Wooster in Ohio
uncle also DTD at UT Austin

sarahpiphi 03-17-2002 10:02 PM

My sister is a PI BETA PHI (UC Riverside)
and my cousin is also a PI BETA PHI (UC Davis)

I am a legacy through my sister! (UC Irvine)

It is wonderful to share the bonds of Pi Phi sisterhood with my sister and cousin!

CutiePie2000 03-17-2002 10:12 PM

I am the first one in my family to go Greek, so I don't have any legacies in my family! http://www.plaudersmilies.de/cry.gifhttp://www.plaudersmilies.de/sad/azcrying.gifhttp://www.plaudersmilies.de/bawling.gifhttp://www.plaudersmilies.de/crying.gif

I don't have any daughters (yet) but I do have 3 nieces...and yes, Auntie CutiePie2000 will start "working on them" when they are in high school to think about going Greek in university!

It might be a tough sell though, since their mothers (my sisters) are a bit like this towards the idea of sororities: http://www.plaudersmilies.de/sad/schmoll2.gif
