Foods you hate to admit you love

I grew up eating all this stuff that I thought was perfectly normal, but my friends all tell me it's weird. In fact, I'm writing this out of KappaStarboy's view because if he reads this he'll probably be sick ;)

So what do you love to eat that others find disgusting?

me:

chopped liver. chopped chicken liver. on saltines.

Lox (smoked salmon)

Peanut-butter and banana sandwiches...also rarely peanut-butter and bacon, 'cause I can't cook (long story)

tomato ramen

blue cheese. Danish blue cheese, not that junk from Wisconsin. My parents had me in the grocery cart when I was little and I took the blue cheese brick and tried to eat through the shrinkwrap. Hey, I was two.

medium-rare hamburgers (yes, I grew up in the Midwest)

tomato juice

and I used to eat lemons as a kid

SuperSister 09-22-2002 10:50 AM

I still eat lemons, I love them!

I like a good liver cooked with tomatoes and onions. I don't know why people think liver is gross, you just have to cook it right. It's really good for my iron levels too.

I like tuna, I'll pour salt on it and eat it straight from the can, I also like to mix some tuna with my mac and cheese.

Yummy :D

UFRushee05 09-22-2002 11:47 AM

OH I LOVE TUNA WITH MAC AND CHEESE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought I was the only one!

I also like Oreos dipped in peanut butter and I also make this gross combo when I had no money for food for like a week...I had a shopping binge and basically overdrew my account.

Anyways, you take a tortilla chip, dip it in peanut butter, and an m&m or two, and you're set. I LOVE IT!

Oh and I also eat pickles with bologna all wrapped up and dipped in mustard...LOL

Oh and I love to dip my frenchfries in mayonaise mixed with ketchup! It's terrible for you but it's like my dirty little secret love!

justamom 09-22-2002 11:51 AM

I'm afraid it might make some people sick, so
WARNING-skip if you have a weak stomach scroll down a bit.

My grandmother made pickled pig's tongue and feet-LOVE them also smothered sweetbreads-pancreas of a cow in brown gravy. I do suck the head on my crawfish! (I know that sounds awful, but that's what they say)
I LOVE all the USUAL unusual, rocky mountain oyster, escargot, calamarie and caviar.
Was served squirrel (this IS Louisiana) just couldn't handle it!

Dionysus 09-22-2002 06:18 PM

Frozen pickle juice. YUMMY! :p

Optimist Prime 09-22-2002 06:57 PM

Pickle juice is good for hangover prevention. I like brocoli. No one else does.

AchtungBaby80 09-22-2002 07:10 PM

Buttermilk...mmmmmmmmm! :)

KillarneyRose 09-22-2002 07:51 PM

Easycheese on Triscuits
Carl Buddig Pastrami wrapped around a dill pickle spear
Caviar
Pineapple chunks, chick peas and ranch dressing
Frozen whipping cream with sugar mixed in
Sour cream with vanilla and sugar
Fried jumbo sandwiches
Baked beans on buttered Wonderbread
Kishka
Cubed headcheese with italian dressing (no jokes; it's a legitimate lunch meat!)

KappaStargirl 09-22-2002 08:49 PM

KillarneyRose!!! That sound you hear is me falling off my bed, shaking with laughter.

Let me employ the Pittsburgh-to-English translator: Jumbo is bologna. Or baloney. Or however you want to spell it :)

Took me months of living in Pittsburgh to figure that out. When I first heard it, I was like "Jumbo what?"

ChiOJenn78 09-22-2002 09:03 PM

caviar
lox
mac and cheese with hot dogs in it
count chocula
medium rare hamburgers
Sno balls-those chocolate cakes with creme in them and pink coconut on them-sooooo good!!
pickled garlic
sometimes I dip my popcorn into milk and then eat it :D

Hootie 09-22-2002 10:45 PM

No offense yall but some of the stuff listed on here is just plain ole NASTY sounding! I'll simply take your word for it...ESPECIALLY the frozen pickle juice! HOW NASTY SOUNDING IS THAT!?!?!

winnieb 09-22-2002 10:51 PM

The things that I eat that others think is gross---
bleu cheese--spread on crackers--with a couple of drips italian dressing on it...
and the one that i rarely have but kind of like---is grilled hotdogs with peanut butter on it. my grandpa use to eat those when i was little--everyone in the family was nastied out by it--i tried it and it is not so bad.

I have been known to enjoy a few bites of plain, raw tofu. That's about as wacky as I get.

ZTAMiami 09-22-2002 10:52 PM

 Dang some of you guys are sick!!
When I was little I used to drink milk with pepsi/coke:D
I also love condensed milk in coke/pepsi or Malta which is a latin barley soda.

chideltjen 09-22-2002 11:14 PM

oysters on the half shell: most people that hear that absolutely love oysters cringe.

If i am at a loss for food in the fridge, i will "scramble" an egg, toast some bread, make a sandwich with cheese and mustard on it. I love it but my roommate hates the smell.

Curry! with rice and apples. My whole apartment complex smells like it and guests always notice it. I don't mind it. It kinda reminds me of home.

ANd i am a die hard sushi fan but won't go near a well cooked steak.

Rudey 09-22-2002 11:20 PM

Re: Foods you hate to admit you love

Just so you know, Lox isn't smoked salmon. It's actually cured in brine but a lot of people think smoked salmon is lox. Either way both are disgusting and I will stay with my bagel and cream cheeze for brunch when I'm in NY and pass up the fish.

-Rudey

What's buttermilk? I only had buttermilk dum-dum lollipops and haven't had the real thing. Is it just really sweet milk with butter like the lollipop?

aggieAXO 09-22-2002 11:33 PM

I love canned tomatoes-I just open the can pour some salt on them and eat-ummmmmmmm

PotentialPledge 09-22-2002 11:37 PM

Buttermilk is a curdled version of milk. Some people drink the way it is, and some people use it in pancakes, biscuits, and cornbread.

I like fried okra, its really good.

three2tango 09-22-2002 11:58 PM

I thought I liked strange things, but after reading some of the crap you people eat my Bacos and Helman's sandwiches don't sound too bad.

Peanut Butter and Banana's squished together in a bowl
Peanuts and Coke
Pork Rinds (if no one is watching)

I love fried okra too!! YUM!!!

xok85xo 09-23-2002 12:15 AM

gefilte fish..

we always ate it on the jewish holidays so i grew up eating it..most people i know think its probably the most vile, disgusting thing ever but i love it

The1calledTKE 09-23-2002 12:18 AM

A peanut butter and bologna sandwich. Yum!

I must be such an idiot when it comes to cooking. But isn't rotten milk curdled? And I've eaten some pretty strange items in France and Iran.

Also, I don't remember the name of the place, but we went looking for this all night burger place and got lost on the South Side of Chicago in this really scary neighborhood at like 3AM. Anyway, the room had red velvet covered walls and while they played Jazz everyone ate from this giant Chili bowl in the room. Now that was some good chili but we all got sick from it.

-Rudey
--I swear the French manage to eat every damn part of an animal if they can put enough butter and sauce on it.

SATX*APhi 09-23-2002 01:42 AM

$5 for whoever has heard of this one:
I pour milk over Jell-o that has already set. Yummmmmm! :D

There really isn't anything I don't like, but here are a few that most people I know make faces over
  • Tripas (pronounced in Spanish), which is Fried cow intestines. Usually there is still "food" in the intestines and that is edible too
  • Liver
  • Sushi
  • Mussels
  • I like my steaks medium rare, but burgers must be well done
  • I eat my hotdogs with mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise
  • Raw oysters
  • Cottage cheese and pineapples

Ack! I had completely forgotten that I like gefilte fish. It's one of those things you have to grow up eating. We used to have it all the time during Passover and the High Holidays when I was little. Haven't had it in years, though.

Rudey-- Don't care what lox is. I love it anyway.

That's not a dirty little secret! I do it too, and from what I understand, it's marketed as hamburger sauce in the west...SO, you're off the hook.

sigmagrrl 09-23-2002 08:28 AM

I had to think about this. I don't think I eat anything too weird. It's just the way I make things.
* I only eat cereal with warm milk.
* I like PB, cream cheese, and american cheese on a bagel.
* I like to put Thousand Island dressing on cooked veggies
* I mix relish into my chili
* I cut my pancakes/french toast/waffles into equal sized pieces. Then, I cut my sausage into exactly half the amount of pieces. So, for example. I cut my pancake/french toast/waffle into 8 pieces, the sausage/ham/bacon gets cut into 4. Then I eat them like sandwiches: pierce the waffle, stab a sausage, another piece of waffle...YUMMY!
* I love to egss and cream cheese together. There are two different ways to eat it. First, boiled eggs. I cut them in half, spread a schmear on top, and top THAT off with a 1/4 slice of American cheese. OR, scramble eggs with cheese. Put that on top of a bagel and a schmear, top the eggs off with bacon slices! YUMMERS!!
* I like lamb chops. I don't know many people who like lamb...
* My mom makes this dish I love that has mac and cheese mixed w/ kielbasa
* I LOVE FRIED BOLOGNA!!!!!

ksig600 09-23-2002 09:03 AM

I i thought I was the only one that ate fried bologna and mustard sandwiches- its good eatin' especially if you're drunk

I also like:

Brussel Sprouts
Broccoli
Cabbage
Spinach
Liver
Sushi

Ugh! I could never imagine eating that-you are one brave soul :)

I loooooove cottage cheese. I could eat a whole container in one sitting. And fried calamari-sooooo yummy!

LOL, Carlie! I didn't even realize that I had written "jumbo" until I read your post. Once a 'burger, always a 'burger I guess! :)

Can I have my $5? I do this too, but only on red Jell-o. It's so much yummier than plain Jell-o! :D

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who eats some of these things! I do the mayo and ketchup on fries, too, as well as fried bologna sandwiches, cottage cheese, and brussels sprouts. I also like dipping fries into Frosty's from Wendy's, liverwurst sandwiches with Gulden's mustard, and creamed chipped beef on toast. I also crave Spaghetti-O's or Chef Boyardee occasionally, which most people like, but my roommate in college thought it was the most disgusting thing ever. mmmm...this makes me want to go out and eat some of this crazy stuff right now!

bucutie02 09-23-2002 11:31 AM

Okay well I am a mayo freak!

I put mayo on just about everything....
hamburgers
hot dogs
fries
corn
baked potato
chicken nuggets

those are the only ones i can think of right now, but im trying to cut back since too much mayo is really bad for you.

I also love to eat scrambled eggs with fries! When i was younger i used to love spreading frosting over white bread!

Hey, I was a lemon eater as a kid too! :D I still remember being in the 7th grade eating whole lemons in class. I also remember liking to put hot sauce on salt and vinegar potato chips during that same time period - go figure.

For the most part though, I am a rather picky eater

AOX81 09-23-2002 11:52 AM

Nothing real exotic for me:

Lima beans with ketchup...yummy!
Black olives straight from the can

can't think of anything else...

RedRoseSAI 09-23-2002 02:03 PM

Ok, wierd stuff I like:
honey and butter on white or French bread (some people find this wierd, but it's so yummy!)
salted tomato slices and butter on white bread
herring
sardines w/ pickles and rye bread
foie gras
the aforementioned buttermilk
lox & sushi (not that wierd, IMHO)

and the grossest of them all...
When I was a kid, I used to love peanut butter, butter, and mayo sandwiches. If the taste doesn't make you cringe, the fat content will!

This morning on Regis & Kelli they were talking about fried Oreos! Anyone ever try anything like that?

sigmagrrl 09-23-2002 03:13 PM

I've heard of fried Oreos, fried Snickers, and fried Twinkies...I wanna try them all!!!!!

Are you thinking of a butterscotch Dum-Dum? I have NEVER seen buttermilk ones...

As for the mayo and ketchup... it's true... In the West it is sold at McDonald's as "Fry Sauce." I think it is absolutely foul but my friends love it!

My weird habit involves mixing sauces though... I like to take different condiments and spices and make my own crazy dipping sauces. Ketchup and honey are SO good together!
