Who's rushing in the fall?

Hi, all!!!! I'd like to know who'll be rushing in the fall! Preppie? Bucutie? How about the incoming freshmen, like orchid2, and the Bama girls? Let's hear your plans!!!

josh8o 06-11-2001 06:32 PM

I will be rushing in the fall!!! WoHo!!! I am very excited. I will be a Junior at SDSU. I transferred this spring and rushed then. Some of you may remember me from my "Second Thoughts" post earlier this spring. I have learned from my mistake, and I'm ready to take fall rush by storm. I should be getting another bid from Phi Kappa Psi, and when I do I'm going to accept it this time!! For those of you that remember, I quit KA. Then later in the semester I ran into a Phi Psi that I had gotten to know quite well. He asked how my pledge semester was, and I told him that I quit. He was like "what? why?" So I was honest, I told him that I wanted to be a Phi Psi. He was very happy to hear it, and even told me that they were disappointed when I did not join their house. He even told me that he is the #3 this year, and that he can guarantee me a bid this fall. I cant wait for September!!!

Unregistered- 06-11-2001 09:10 PM

Josh, I commend you for giving Greek Life another try. However, I was somewhat uneasy about one of your comments.

You mentioned that a Phi Psi brother "guaranteed you a bid" for this fall. I don't know how things are at SDSU, but where I'm from, guaranteeing a prospective a bid is considered a rush infraction and it's also dirty rushing. Some other examples of dirty rushing are in this thread: http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/...ML/000215.html .

Whether or not you will get a bid from Phi Psi, I'd go into Rush as if it were the first time. I've seen guys and girls get promised a bid...and unfortunately they expected too much and due to some circumstances they left without bids. I'm not saying the same will happen to you...but just remember to again go into rush with an open mind.

Good luck.

Last fall we heard many exciting, and touching stories from Rushees who were going through formal rush. They would post every night telling us about their parties, who they were putting on their lists, etc..... It was SO exciting, many of us followed them more closely than soaps. In addition to the rushees going through rush this fall, I think it would also be exciting to hear from some of the members who are on the other side of rush. Regulars could use new names to disguise their identities, and tell us about the parties, how they went, what kinds of activities they had, how the rushees responded.... Nothing secret, no sharing of confidences, but just giving us the other side of rush.
Any thoughts?

HeidiHo 06-12-2001 01:03 AM

tcsparky- that would be fun, because all the rushees from last fall will be having their first rush on the inside (like me http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif) Plus, I love to hear what potential new members say after each event. I say we make sure to talk about our recruitment experiences.
Heidi

Greek_Girl 06-12-2001 01:10 AM

I am going through formal rush in the fall too. I'll be a sophomore. I'm so excited, but I'm also so nervous!! I think that's only a natural combination of emotions though!!

orchid2 06-12-2001 01:17 AM

I am rushing as an incoming freshman! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I've finally gotten recommendations for each sorority squared away, and now I'm just anxiously anticipating rush week!(Labor Day for me). Although I am very specifically interested in one of the sororities, I'm trying to keep an open mind b/c I don't really know anything about the girls at my school yet. So I'll just be playing it by ear. I'll keep y'all posted every night! I remember last year I was so jealous of all my graduated friends who were rushing...and now it's my turn! Yay!

lindsay_iu 06-12-2001 01:29 AM

I'm going to be rushing as a sophomore at IU this fall/winter. I'm already nervous about it. I'm scared that my mind will go blank, and I won't think of anything to talk about. I'm also really excited about the opportunity to become a member of a sorority. Girls, if you have any advice, feel free to pass some my way. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Wish me luck! hehe.

CRMSNTiDEGRL717 06-12-2001 03:05 AM

I'm rushing this fall at the University of Alabama!!!!! Roll Tide!! ill be a freshmen, i hope everything turns out A ok!!!!! Good luck to everyone else rushing along w/ me this fall!!!
Liz

Dreamerchick 06-12-2001 05:23 AM

I'm HOPEFULLY rushing in the fall. I'm not to sure yet about joining a sorority (25% chance), but I'm joining to go through rush week no matter what. I'll be transfering in as a junior in the fall, and as of right now, I kinda already broken down the top sororities I would like to pledge, since I've been hanging out with this school's (CSUN) greek system for awhile. If anyone out there knows has Alpha Phi or AXiD in their school...any thoughts? Or how are they like in your school (types of girls)? I'm not too sure if I'll go either way, but it's what I've had in mind...

Dreamnerchick: By my name, you can tell that I'm an AXiD. I was a national consultant a few years ago and traveled to CSUN to visit the Alpha Xi Delta chapter there. That chapter was top notch. The women were fun and down to Earth. I haven't been back to CSUN since then. I'd love to hear about your recruitment experience... keep us posted. You may surprise yourself - you may actually pledge.

Thanks for wishing me luck!

I do have a question. Would it be tacky of me to carry a small notebook to make notes about each sorority? I obiviously won't be writing things down while I'm in the house, but after on the way to the next house. I could keep it in my coat pocket so it won't be in the way. I sometimes have a hard time remembering things, and I think that this would help me keep things straight, since there are so many sororities at IU.

carnation 06-13-2001 11:27 PM

I think if I did this, I'd use the tiniest notebook available and I wouldn't let the sisters see me writing in it! The idea is good, but I'd be afraid that some people would make a joke out of it.

Lindsay,
Several people have told me that I should do that during rush and I thought that seemed kind of ridiculous! I don't know how many sororities there are at IU, but there are only 15 NPC ones at UA so I think I'll be able to keep everyone straight. I would be interested to know if this is a common practice!

When I went through recruitment we were given a little booklet with all the houses' stats (founding, nickname, color...), a map of where they were located, the greek alphabet & room to make notes about each house. It was suggested that between visits we write things down. I'd decide based on the atmosphere where you go to school. Maybe suggest it to your rush group, so they'll be a few of you doing it. It might just catch on. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
Heidi

lindsay_iu 06-14-2001 01:00 AM

Thanks for the advice, carnation and Heidi. IU has 19 sororities, so I should be able to remember which is which. But I'm just kind-of nervous that I might forget something in the excitement. In September, there is an informational meeting called Greek Opportunities for Women, so I'll have to wait until then to see if I get a booklet liked the one Heidi described. And again, on second thought, if I'm really taken by a sorority or two, I will definitely be able to remember them.

orchid2 06-14-2001 01:14 AM

There are only 5 NPC sororities at my school and I've gone to all the websites and pretty much memorized the basics! I really want to impress everyone! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/cool.gif With such a small number, I don't think it will be too hard to keep track of them once I get there, though.

CRMSNTiDEGRL717 06-14-2001 01:26 AM

rolltidesoon---if you dont mind me asking whats your name? i looked at your profile when i saw you were goin to bama, and your e-mail was queenliz somethin or another. anyways im asking b/c my name's liz too. well anyways! good luck w/ rush this fall, who knows, maybe we'll meet!!!!!

kappagirl00 06-14-2001 01:58 AM

A girl in my rush group had a little notebook, and she was the envy of our whole group cause we wished we had thought of it. She didn't bring it into the house, she left it outside. Then when we left the house she wrote down her overall impression of the house, the names of the girls she talked to and what they talked about. She said it really helped her when it came time to make decisions about houses. So yeah, if you're allowed to leave stuff outside the house I'd take a little notebook.

ps I am very proud to say that this girl is now my sister! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

shadokat 06-14-2001 02:22 PM

I agree totally with Rach_DG. You will be nervous when you go through rush, but we are just as nervous and excited as you are. We are going to add new sisters to our group, and despite all the fun, the parties, the community service, one of the best days of the semester is bid day and getting to welcome new women go out group! It's the feeling of sisterhood that is what being in a sorority is all about. So enjoy yourself at rush, and while it's been said a hundred times already and you'll hear it a million times until rush is over, follow your heart, don't listen to all the rumors and hype about the groups, and you'll find the right place for you.

RACH_DG 06-15-2001 12:22 AM

For those of you girls rushing this fall I want to wish you all the best of luck. For some advice I want to tell you to just be yourselves. I know you all will be nervous, but keep in mind that those of us who are the rushers are nervous as well. We want you girls to like us just as much as you want us to like you!!! But, like I said, just be yourselves and things will go great. And those of you who are worried about not knowing what to say and stuff like that, at MSU, that is our job. The rushers are the conversation starters and facilitators. We know the potential members are nervous and we don't want them to have to worry about things to talk about...we try to take the pressure off a little. I am sure we are not the only school who does this or shall I say sorority. Also, I think the little book thing is a great idea and I just might suggest it to our greek council. I know during the last formal rush I can't count the numerous girls who said they were having a hard time remembering everything about every sorority. I think the book thing would be a great idea because it IS overwhelming. It may also be easier to figure out what sorority you really see yourself being a part of. Once again I wish you all the best of luck!!

Hi everybody! I am rushing at the UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA this fall, and I am so excited! (and really nervous http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif) Liz, I will write you back soon, but I have to get up really early this morning, we are going to Seaside, FL for my cousin's wedding...she is getting married on the beach! Best of Luck to everyone and ROLL TIDE!

CRMSNTiDEGRL717 06-15-2001 06:06 PM

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I wont not be myself on purpose, but it's hard to be your real self w/ someone you just met. But I am nice, so I can definately be that!!! lol
Liz

M Gerrick 06-15-2001 09:53 PM

To all of you who are rushing this fall - my advice (after hearing many discussions in sorority selection session) is to ask questions, be very interested, tell the women how much you like their party (sincerely of course), tell them how excited you are to be going through rush and are excited about being a part of the Greek system. The sorority women also want to hear that you want to be involved with the organization and on campus. Ask as many questions as you can think of to show your interest. Smile, be yourself, and have a good time! Best of luck to each of you!!!

orchid2 06-15-2001 10:16 PM

Thank you M Gerrick! I am really nervous that I'll just "mess up" or something, hehe...that was exactly what we all needed to hear! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

orchid2--- i saw from an old thread that your going to Rush at jax state, thats cool. My cousin goes there and she rushed. Now she's an AOII. She really loves it. Well good luck and best wishes!!!!
Liz

M Gerrick 06-17-2001 12:22 AM

Best of luck to you Orchid2. Remember, the sorority women are nervous too. They're trying to make a good impression, and you will be trying to make a good impression. I know you will find the place for you. Let me know how it turns out and what you pledge!!

Wine&Blue 06-17-2001 11:05 AM

About the notebook: I wouldn't take one into the houses and take notes. But here's a tip I picked up as an upperclassman. At UA, they used to give you a little rush booklet that had info about rush and the houses and what you should wear each day (I'm not sure if they still do that.) I think there were blank pages in the back of the booklet. A lot of girls would make notes in that and leave them outside while they went into the houses. But be careful what you write. You might run across an unscrupulous Rho Chi or two who will look at them.

CRMSNTiDEGRL717 06-21-2001 01:28 PM

Wine&Blue--- thanks for the input, i will definately be taking notes, http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Lindsay!

I am a KKG from IU (now graduated). I am so excited for you!!! IU's rush is crazy, but it is also an experience you will never forget. I rushed as a sophomore too...

Can I answer any questions for you or help you out in any way? Please don't hesitate to contact me by email at hawkeyehoosier@hotmail.com

I'd love to help you out!!!

PS--You can carry a little notebook to make notes, but DON'T do it while you're in the parties (obviously). You can make notes in between houses, when you are waiting outside to be let in. Just jot a few things down that will help you remember what you liked/disliked about the chapter.

PPS--You will receive a really helpful info packet when you go to Greek Opportunities for Women in the Fall... or you can get one from your Rush Counselor... but it's big--like 8 x 10--so you won't want to carry that with you to the parties.

Go HOOSIERS!!!!

Hi! I will be rushing at KU as a soph in the fall! Granted, I'm really nervous, but excited at the same time! I don't really know much about the greek system here, but it looks like something I'd really like to be involved in! Just a couple questions I'd like to put up for debate - 1. What effect does weight have to do when rushing? I'm a fairly "big" girl. 2. What kind of GPA's are houses looking for? Will a 2.0 cut it? Thanks for all your help guys - I look forward to hearing from you all!

lindsay_iu 06-23-2001 12:46 AM

Hey imsohappy... I don't really have any questions right now, but I know that I will definitely have some once school starts in the fall. I think that I might make you my unofficial "mentor" for all things IU rush. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif If that's ok, of course.

Oh..I take back the statement about the questions. I do have a question right now. When is Greek Week? Is it before or after GOW? What exactly goes on during this week? Ok..that was more than one question. hehe http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I didn't really pay too much attention to any Greek activities or anything last school year. I just knew that Yell Like Hell, IU Sing, and the Little 5 are more fun if you're Greek.

Oh...I can't wait to get back to school in August. I miss it so much. I'm looking forward to rush, and I'm going to get football tickets for my dad. Yay! It's going to be a great year.
