what's the oldest piece of clothing you own (and still may wear?)

Random question of the day:
What is the oldest piece of clothing that you have and still might wear (baby clothes don't count!).

Today I found among my t-shirts one I had from the 6th grade (I was 11 then, now i'm 22- i've had it for HALF MY LIFE!). It is in perfect shape, thanks to my mom's great laundry skills throughout the years. So I put it on this morning cause i'm just studying all day, and it's the MOST COMFORTABLE thing ever!

I have a polo from when I was 14 (that's 2 decades ago for those of you who are counting). It is getting rather see-through though.

Oh, and not the oldest clothing to me, but I have a vintage cashmere coat from circa 1950's. It is in better shape than some of my newer stuff.

tcsparky 09-15-2002 11:28 AM

I have a black cashmere blend coat form the 1930's given to me by my great-grandmother before she died. I have ahd the lining replaced, but the coat is in excellent shape. I agree with kddani, it is holding up better than most of my other stuff.

I also have a red sweater vest from my 10'th grade year. I still wear it around. It's in great shape.

librasoul22 09-15-2002 12:50 PM

I have this old Tampa Bay Bandits half-shirt with no sleeves. It is SO comfy, but I only wear it around the house, lol.

KillarneyRose 09-15-2002 01:13 PM

I have a Chanel bag from my grandmother from the thirties, but I keep that wrapped and put away and only use it for very special occasions.

I have a pair of Sebago Docksiders I bought in 8th grade (we're talking 1981 here). I saved money from my summer job to buy them; they were the unheard-of price of $39.99! lol They're pretty ragged but I still wear them :)

Betarulz! 09-15-2002 01:30 PM

Oldest thing that I brought with me to college is definetly a t-shirt that I got at the Governer's Cup soccer tournament in Topeka KS. I got that in May of 8th grade so it's 5 going on 6. I usually just wear to work out, or perhaps as an undershirt, but like everyone else has said about their old clothes...it's really comfortable.

An old USFL team (or some obscure league, I can't even remember). They were coached by Steve Spurrier *vomit*.

I used to live in Tampa, so my mother was a fan and bought me the shirt.

Optimist Prime 09-15-2002 05:40 PM

shirt from HS..uh...jeans! sweater too.

CarolinaDG 09-15-2002 06:19 PM

I have an old softball jersey from when I was 9. It's lookin' a bit rough, but I love it and still wear it around.

DeltaSigStan 09-15-2002 06:20 PM

I see a lot of girls still wearing their AYSO jerseys around........

Tracy - I still have/wear my boat-mocs too but I didn't get them till around 11th grade (we didn't get the trends as fast out in hickland, hee hee). The shoes before those were those horrid things with the giant crepe soles...:D

aggieAXO 09-15-2002 09:15 PM

I have some Gap turtle necks and Guess Jeans circa 1986-1987 I still wear though the jeans are a bit ragged. I just cleaned out my closet for charity-I think I had about 30 wrap skirts in there-I can't imagine wearing those again.

KappaStargirl 09-15-2002 09:42 PM

Wow, and I thought my six-year-old letter sweatshirt was old. I wear it when I write: I open the window so the cold air comes in at night and put it on. It's hunter green, a color I can't stand, and has red-and-green plaid letters on white backing with "Kappa Kappa Gamma" embroidered in script underneath. It's worn down on the inside but I think the outside's made of iron. It's also three sizes too big. I lost weight after college, so nothing from that era fits me anymore.

KappaStarboy won't let me wear it out in public :)

DeltAlum 09-16-2002 12:12 AM

Two things...

I have a windbreaker with Watkins Glen US Grand Prix, Triumph, Austin Healey and Mid Ohio Sports Car Course patches on it that I had in High School (pre-1965).

I also have a green jacket with a shamrock and "O'Halloran's Tipperary Pub" in white on the back and over the left chest area. It was given to me on my last night at a TV station in Detroit in 1984.

They both still fit. Sort of. If I don't try to zip up the windbreaker.

DeltaSigStan 09-16-2002 12:13 AM

Anyone still a member of "Members Only" lol?

Hootie 09-16-2002 01:47 AM

Either is my Chi Omega windbreaker from 1998 or the pair of pants that have been turned into gym pants from 1999!

I have this cute pink t-shirt that I've owned since 8th grade. I love it soooo much. The only sad thing is that when I wear it, I realize that I haven't grown since 8th grade:(

Shine 09-16-2002 08:54 AM

I've got an old grey athletic t-shirt that says "Northwood Basketball" on it. It's got to be at least 8 years old. It belonged to a guy I dated. Incidentally, he never actually played sports in highschool. I think his dad coached the team or something. I love it. It's great for the gym, and just worn enough to be super soft.

AOX81 09-16-2002 09:19 AM

This is such a funny thread because today I actually have on the oldest thing I own. It is a sweater that belonged to my great-grandmother.

dzrose93 09-16-2002 03:41 PM

The oldest items of clothing that I have are three vintage dresses from the 1940's. Two are sundresses and the other is a "garden" dress which was intended for formal parties.

I found them in a vintage clothing shop a few months ago when I was searching for an outfit for a Ya-Ya Sisterhood party that one of my sorority sisters was throwing. They are all in good condition and they fit perfectly -- which surprised me because, according to the owner of the shop, women were typically smaller back then. I loved all of the dresses, couldn't decide between them, and ended up purchasing all three. :)

xok85xo 09-16-2002 03:56 PM

i have a "coed naked billiards" shirt that i got like..my freshman year of high school..so 1993 or 1994..i still slept in it until a few months ago it, but then it started to rip.. so i retired it to my drawer..

kddani 09-16-2002 04:55 PM

coed naked!

OH MY GOD! I loved my coed naked volleyball shirt. Those shirts were awesome, totally pissed off the teachers and admin in junior high/high school and there wasn't anything they could do about it!
Does anyone still have a hypercolor t-shirt? Those were awesome!

APhiRattlerGal 09-16-2002 05:13 PM

I was cleaning out my closet when i moved into my new place and i found an old hyper-color shirt....remember when those were cool like 15 years ago!?? haha

amycat412 09-16-2002 05:17 PM

I was wearing my old hooded Stanford sweatshirt over the weekend--and realized I bought it when I attended NCA Cheer camp there in 1986, the summer before my senior year in high school.

Tom Earp 09-16-2002 05:30 PM

Waste not want not it is my saith TOM!:D

valkyrie 09-16-2002 06:09 PM

I have a tshirt from 1983 that I wear all the time because it is the softest thing that ever existed. My parents bought it at this airshow they used to go to every year -- it has goofy 80s graphics of airplanes on it and is light blue.

ZTAMich 09-16-2002 06:14 PM

A comfy pair of jeans from the limited just made their way out of my closet...had them since 8th grade and now I'm a college Senior...they were sooo worn in and I will miss them!!! They were getting too many holes :(

I thought I was the only one who still had one.

KappaKittyCat 09-16-2002 11:35 PM

Those were actually banned clothing in my school district. Those and the "Big Johnson" shirts.

chopper816 09-17-2002 01:04 AM

my first high school football t shirt i got during two a days before my freshman year started...

lifesaver 09-17-2002 01:57 PM

A t-shirt with texas on it as the only continent on the whole planet that was the cover of Texas Monthly for its 20 year anniversary. The shirt is 10 years old. Has no sleves and very thin. collar is frayed. I wear it about 2-3 times a week.

UF_PikePC98 09-18-2002 03:01 PM

The oldest piece of clothing I have is a shirt from the 12th grade. It's a leopard print shirt. It has a velvet feel to it. I snagged so many chicks in that shirt. My friends all tried to take it from me and use it for themselves. The shirt lost popularity about 1 1/2 yrs after I bought it. It was back in those days where leopard print was in style when you went out.

I have many memories with it. It's very dear to me. I can't seem to let it go. I wore it to Atlanta once last spring and the chicks liked it. I tried to wear it out in gainesville one night last spring but my girlfriend said she wouldn't walk out of the apartment with me if I had it on. Since then I have placed it in the closet for good. Maybe if another Pimps and Hoes party is thrown I'll wear it.

SigmaChiCard 09-23-2002 10:13 AM

Well, I just in the last year lost it, but it was a sweatshirt that was from 1982, I think. My sisters boyfriend had given it to me and he'd acquired it playing football in college, it was the coolest, greatest sweatshirt ever made. Now I'd say the oldest thing I own is probably my docs from 7 years ago, or actually my adidas sambas and my adidas responses from 8 or 9 years ago.

ps. yes, I am still alive

Kevin 09-23-2002 11:16 AM

I occasionally wear some of the hand-me downs of from my grandfather. They're probably around 20-30+ years old. One of my personal favorites is a suede sportscoat...

70's ties are interesting as well..

reverie 07-30-2004 06:56 PM

I bought my pair of Doc Martens in eighth grade...so they're six years old now. And my mom thought I'd never wear them!

OH MY GOD...YOU TOO!:D i have this white hooded stanford hooded sweatshirt with bright red letters fromthe 80s..... i will never part with it! My fiance at the time got it for me when we visisted his brother and sister in law in palo alto. I cherish that thing.

Did you grad 87 also?

emperorclb 07-30-2004 07:47 PM

The oldest piece of clothing I own, I think would be my Lab coat from 10th grade year in high school. We used to wear them when we worked in the Hospital because there was a medical program that my high school had. That was about 4 - 5 years ago; And its realy unlikely that I will ever wear it again, cuz it would serve no purpose.

ISUKappa 07-30-2004 07:49 PM

An old old old faded mustard yellow Iowa State Cyclone Wrestling Club t-shirt from about 1984. I'm sure my dad got it for something but it's mine now! I still wear it around the house and to bed.

smiley21 07-30-2004 08:45 PM

i have two DC Talk (coolest groundbreaking group of Christian music) shirts that i have had since i was 13.
