How did YOU get your name??

I was just wondering how everyone got their name? From a relative or someone close to the family? Or how about just an odd reason??

I received mine from my sisters. :) Since I was going to be the last child my mom said that they could name me whatever they wanted. True, that would have been a bad idea if they would have been young, but, thankfully they were teenagers :) So, I got my first name (Kayla) from the 'good' girl on Days of Our Lives and my middle name (Ranee) from her enemy on the series. :) And to add to the oddness my first dog was named 'Patch', her fiance on the show! LOL :p

When my mom was pregnant with me she watched General Hospital every day. She had a big crush on this guy named Scorpio, and his real name was Tristan. So she named me Tristan. I go by Stan because, well, Tristan is kinda feminine.

TriSigmaTX 09-14-2002 08:45 PM

My parents named me after my mom's Great Uncle Tracy, but to make it more feminine, they spelled it Tracie. My brother just picked my middle name Michelle, pretty good for a 9 year old at the time.

It is tradition in Italian families that the first daughter and son be named after the father's parents, and the second daughter and son be named after the mother's parents. I, along with 3 of my cousins, am named Phyllis for my father's mother. My brother, Russell, is one of 4 in our family. My middle name, Rosa, is for my mother's sister and my father's sister... that's what you get for being Italian!

alphaiota 09-14-2002 09:11 PM

i got my first name from my great aunt and my middle name was my grandmother's maiden name.

My mom liked the name Lauren, because she thought that it was pretty, my sister, though has a more interesting story about her name though. Her name is Asha, (Osh(like OshKosh)-uh) my mom is a nurse and she took care of or worked with an India woman Asha, and she liked the name, so she named her that... we've only met like two people with her name, and no one can ever pronounce it!

My mom read "Little Women" when she was 12 and decided she wanted to name her eventual, hypothetical daughter Beth. 16 years later... I was born. It's technically Elizabeth at the preferrence of my Dad and Grandmothers.

bcdphie 09-14-2002 09:46 PM

I was named after one of my dad's cousins (Siobhan).

SoCalGirl 09-14-2002 09:49 PM

My name was a last minute decision. I was named after one of my mom's cousins. I was supposed to be named Maria Teresa Elizabette *****. But my parents decided a lil white baby w/ no hair would never be able to pull off the name. So they named me Carolyn Elizabeth ***** instead.

"Brimful of Asha on the 49!"

What does your sister think of that song?

KillarneyRose 09-14-2002 09:57 PM

Tracy is my mother's maiden name, so here I am!

josh8o 09-14-2002 09:59 PM

i have a older sister named heather. and my parents thought the josh went well with heather (josh and heather this, josh and heather that...). so they named me josh.

KappaStargirl 09-14-2002 11:35 PM

My father had a very cool aunt, his aunt Flossie, who died not long after he and my mom got married. They decided that should they have a girl, they would name the baby after her. According to my uncle (dad's brother), Flossie was kind, funny, very fashionable, and could hold her liquor like no one he knew :). Flossie, however, was a nickname, short for Florence, which was her middle name. Her first name was Carlisle, and she couldn't stand it, so she went by her middle name all her life.

My grandmother (my mother's mother) was raised by her aunt Elizabeth and uncle David, and my mom really liked them a lot when she was little, they always used to read to her.

So when I was born, they named me Carlisle Elizabeth. They never called me Elizabeth, though, they nicknamed me Carlie. I hated my name growing up, and thought many times about going by Elizabeth, but I never got around to making it official. As an adult, I'm okay with it, and most people tell me it's very pretty...once they learn to pronounce it.

Had I been a boy, I'd have been named David Franklin.

archangel12 09-15-2002 12:49 AM

My mother named me for the heroine in the romance novel she was reading at the time. I think the name was The Wolf and the Dove. Half way through the book the heroine changes her name to whispering dove. I was lucky mom wasn't that far along, thankfully Heather Briana was as bad as it got. My little bro was named Evan Mitchell for Dr. Evan Mitchell on Days of Our Lives.

Peaches-n-Cream 09-15-2002 01:00 AM

My mother named me after her mother, my grandma and her grandmother, my great grandmother.
My younger sister was named after my mother's cousin. My mother picked my youngest sister's name because she liked it.

Hootie 09-15-2002 01:18 AM

My parents just liked the name... I remember finding a baby name book and there were a few names underlined, but Amy was the one they chose.
My middle name is the female version of Michael (Michelle) which is a family name. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but it sure could ;)

PS. Had I been born a boy I would have been named Christopher LOL

aephi alum 09-15-2002 11:08 AM

I'm named after my grandmother (first name) and mother (middle name).

Tom Earp 09-15-2002 11:14 AM

HAHA, Last name, my Dads!

first and Middle they just liked it!

Pointed out ofter checking Tree of Family, there were 2 Thomas's who had a bunch of Acres in Montgomery County Maryland!

Oh for those that dont know, between DC and Baltimore!

Damn and I am poor!:(

SilverTurtle 09-15-2002 11:57 AM

My first name is Carrie. It's after my mom's maiden name, but her maiden name is spelled Carey. My dad didn't like that spelling, so Carrie it was. (Then the movie came out shortly afterwards & boy was my mom pissed about that!)

My middle name is Lenore, after my mom, grandma & great-grandma! We all have the same middle name, and my grandma actually goes by it 'cause she doesn't like her 1st name (Sybil). I love my middle name, 'cause other than my family, NO ONE has it. (Well, there is that Edgar Allan Poe poem, but that's okay. :D )

If I was a boy my dad wanted to name me Tel. Not short for anything, that's the whole name! I think it was after a character's son in one of his favorite books.. something like that. Thank god I wasn't a boy!

Allie 09-15-2002 02:21 PM

When my parents planned on having a second child (me!) they immediatly started picking out manes, but would not share with each other which ones they liked. So one day they finally sat down and discussed it. My dad said he really liked Allison, and my mom started jumping up and down, because that was also one of her favorite names.

So when it came to my middle name they fought for 9 monthes! My dad liked Ann and my mom felt like they should carry on family tradition and name the baby part of the grandparents names, which left them with a choice of Jean, Betty, Blanche, or Elizabeth. My mom liked Elizabeth after my fathers mothers middle name. So it wasn't decided untill I was born that I would offically be named Allison Elizabeth :)

I love my name, even though my friends all call me Allie LOL

SincereDesire 09-15-2002 02:31 PM

My first name is a variation of Mary.... My mother, both her grandmothers, and both my father's grandmothers are all named Mary. I escaped it by a hair (and four letters), a good thing since I've since found I have like 20 cousins named Mary... and I'm not a Christian.

My middle name is a variation of my mother's grandmother's middle name- she changed it to Elizabeth.
But since my parents were being original, they spelled it Elysabeth.
I've never seen anyone else spell it that way!:D

Optimist Prime 09-15-2002 02:39 PM

I am the Third which sucks. :( It is a family name from my dad's parternal grandmother. Middle name is because when my grandad was born there was complications and so named the doctor that saved both lives (my grandaddy and his mother) his last name was the middle name. Billy comes from a pet crow my granddaddy had. The crow was black billy and grandfather was white billy but just billy stuck. So he passed that down. I think Tristan a better name than mine.

DWAlphaGam 09-15-2002 02:43 PM

My grandmother came up with my name when she had my mom, but she decided to name her something else instead. When my mom had me, my grandmother suggested it to her, so that's why I'm Donielle. :)

Hey, come on, I love the name Beulah! I keep threatening to rename myself Beulah every time I meet ANOTHER Dana. I used to be the only one I knew, and then lo and behold, they all started coming out of the woodwork--there's another one in my sorority, and things get confusing sometimes. But thank God I'm not a Jennifer or a Lindsey or something really common like that!

But as for the original question, my dad just added an "a" to the end of his name, and voila. My middle name is my grandfather's (Ray, only with an "e" instead of a "y").

juniorgrrl 09-15-2002 11:55 PM

My name, Aimée, is a family name. Its pronounced A-may; its French for Amy. My middle name is another family name, its too complicated to even go into it. Its French as well.

I swear, all of my children will have phonetic names.

deltaphi94 09-16-2002 12:11 AM

I'm the only person in my entire family... even back to like the 1700-1800's... to NOT be named for a relative. The closest I come to being named for anyone at all is the doctor who delivered me. I wanted to be really early -- due in early Sept, born in early Aug. My mom had preterm labor in May, June, and July.

It took my parents 3 days to finally name me a variation of the dr.'s first name. Thank goodness they chose that, though! Otherwise, my name could have been Willamina.

Shine 09-16-2002 08:55 AM

My parents always liked the name Sarah. My middle name is the name of my mother's best friend, and the maid of honor at her wedding.

Hey! I'm an Amy Michelle too :) I'm not really sure how my parents came up with Amy but my middle name was choses because my dads is Michael.

I was going to be named Shelley (my moms maiden name) but my dad didn't like it so I got Amy Michelle instead.

M&M 09-16-2002 09:43 AM

My first name is McGee. It's sort of a family name.... my grandmother was born and raised in Mcgehee, Arkansas, although the spelling is a bit different from my name. My father swears that McGee was the last name of a character on a tv show, but I'm not sure I believe him. When I tell people about my grandmother being from Mcgehee, AR, I always say "I'm incredibly grateful she wasn't from someplace like Smackover!" (yes, there IS a Smackover, Arkansas!!!)

The complicating factor is that my LAST name is now commonly used as a woman's FIRST name, and McGee is commonly used as a last name, so everyone gets my name backwards! Oh well. I like my name though because it's so unique! Once people get the order right, they never forget my name.

Had I been a boy, I'd have been William Thomas III after my father. I'm glad I wasn't given my grandmothers' names, or I'd have been Betty Muriel! We have a ton of odd names in our family though, including such gems as Keturiah, Parthenia and Una, so I guess I lucked out with McGee.

valkyrie 09-16-2002 11:33 AM

I have no idea why my parents named me Tracy -- I guess they just liked it. They picked my middle name, Noelle, because I was born near Christmas. I've kind of always wanted an unusual first name, but because my last name is long and complicated, I suppose it's for the best that I didn't get one. However, I always thought it would be cool to change my name to Noelle Tracy.

Dionysus 09-16-2002 03:27 PM

My mom is a fan of country music, so she named me after Tanya Tucker. Which is unique, because our name is PRONOUNCED differently that the rest of them. I'm called Tonya all the time, which is wrong.:rolleyes:

My sisters name is Tanya but it's not pronounced TANya...her name is pronounced Tonya.

FuzzieAlum 09-16-2002 05:01 PM

If I was a boy they were going to call me Mark Anthony (!), and if I was a girl it was going to be Lisa Ann. Then they realized I had a cousin named Anna Liisa (yes, two I's), and that my name might be a bit much. So my dad picked my first name, which my mom hated at first. My middle name is "Marie" after my mom's sister's middle name, and is one of the Three Generic Girls' Middle Names (along with Ann and Lisa).

TigerGirl52 09-16-2002 05:04 PM

My first name is Allison...I guess I was named that because my dad's grandmother's name was Alice. My middle name is Marie after my mom's mom. Nothing too original about my story. LOL.

Allison

APhiRattlerGal 09-16-2002 05:10 PM

Well my mom loved the name Iliana, and my dad loved the name Victoria. They both wanted my middle name to be Araceli (my mother's name) so they came up with:

Iliana Aracelie Victoria Nieto

amycat412 09-16-2002 05:52 PM

My mom says she knew she was going to name her future daughter Amy ever since she heard the song "Once in Love with Amy" when she was 6 years old. My middle name is after my Grandmother on my mom's side.

Optimist Prime 09-16-2002 08:12 PM

If I was a girl I would be Sarah. I would have been a hottie too.

swissmiss04 09-17-2002 12:11 AM

I was supposed to be a boy, according to the doctors, and in that case I would have been Andrew (something)...I can't remember right off. But then when it was confirmed I was a chick, that's when the fun started. My mom and dad agreed on Sarah Elizabeth, and then at their first Lamaze class found 8 other couples w/ the same idea. Strike one. Then my mom said "How about Holly Elizabeth?" Dad said that there was a girl named Holly in his childhood that constantly pestered him (she apparently was mentally disabled, and his mom made him be nice to her...childhood memories are weird like that), so that was strike two. Then Dad said "Rachel Elizabeth?" and mom thought it sounded too much like homage to her father (who ran out on them when she was young) so definitely strike three. Mom tossed around Chloe for a while before she thought back to her time in Italy and flying over England on the way home and seeing the fields of heather. Then she took her name and Germanicized it to Susanne, so I was named Heather Susanne (after being born a whole month late!!!)

ADPi~Ally 10-11-2002 02:18 PM

I was supost to be named Anna Marie or Ann Marie but then my mom saw "Allison" on gift wrap that had baby names on it. She like Allison better. And kept Marie as my middle name.

TigerGirl52 and I have the same 1st and middle name which is cool!!!!!

Ally

Oh, that's pretty! My boyfriend is Indian and he wants our kids to have Hindi names, so I'll have to keep that in mind. :)
