Rush Clothes

Thank you so much. You girls really make me feel welcome to the Greek community even though I am a PNM.

Now I am a clothes person...ask anyone that knows me! So I'll post what I'll be wearing to the days that I know of. If you have any suggestions I have brown curly hair and I am tall so these knee length skirts don’t look too daunting on me. They’re not the frumpy type of skirts:

Day 1 Information Fair
Knee length bubblegum pink small print floral skirt that is slightly A-Line but a little more fitted and less apron like. Yellow J Crew scoop neck cotton tee, fitted. Pearl earrings and a rolled pearl or NAL pendant necklace. (This outfit could change if I want to match it to a different purse...I don't know which one would compliment this one the best...possible the tooled leather one.)

Day 1 Greek Orientation Meeting
This is where we meet other PNM's and our recruitment counselors. Emerald green Anthropologie fake wrap sweater or Michael Stars fake wrap top (emerald too) depending on weather. Trusty blue Diesel jeans. Boots and my *fake* malachite and amber choker. (2 amber strands with malachite stone in the middle). Small earrings of some sort.

Day 1 (of recruitment)
Denim A-Line blue and white thin diagonal chevron striped skirt with some rickrack and detailing at the bottom. Tomato red fake wrap sleeveless tank. Red leather and wood flip-flop like sandals. Necklace that has red, mauve, and raspberry metal flowers on it painted with a gemstone in the middle. It's on a bronzy detailed chain. Hand made tooled leather purse that has flowers tooled into it.

Day 2 (8 houses)
Maybe but I am not sure but I may wear red and white fitted gingham cropped pants with a dusty blue knit shell that has red cherries knit on one side of it. They kind of pop out…very cute. A same shoe as the day before and pearl earings with either the Tiffany’s all heart or heart ID bracelet or the pearl bracelet. This outfit may change because of purses…I love my new one to death!!!(It’s a small Burberry bag!)

Day 3 (4 houses)
Black and white screen printed floral pleated knee length A-Line INC skirt. Black knit ballet neck cap sleeved INC top. Pearl necklace and earrings. Either bright pink or black heels.

As far as the other clothes go I will be in SF from Sunday to Wednesday so I will have tons of time there to shop...actually that is the purpose of the trip. So if anyone has some tips on what I should wear for a southern California rush please do not hesitate to tell me before Sunday. As far as pref goes I have two choices since the recruitment newsletter told us to wear something that we would to a wedding. I have either a black spaghetti strap knee length dress that has a draped neck and gathers slightly above the knee in an asymmetrical fashion. My other choice is a fitted knee length strapless bright blue dress. Both would be worn with either pink or black heels, a full pearl set (earrings, necklace and bracelet), respectable makeup and hair half up half down . Please let me know what you think would be more appropriate for pref...I have no clue!

As far as dress codes for the days go here it is so you can help me out:
Kickoff Fair**day--- casual, outside at Drake Stadium,
Day 1 (11 houses)**day--- sundress, capri’s, skirts, khakis
Day 2 (8 houses)**day--- slightly dressier than day 1
Day 3 (4 houses)**night--- something you’d wear to a nice dinner
Day 4 (2 houses pref)**night--- a dress you’d wear to a wedding or party

I think the bright pink would be a better choice than the black... it'd be a great little shock of color!

I know you are going to look FABULOUS! And you are my absolute heroine for actually planning outfits in advance.

XOXO,
Annie.

UCLAgirl 09-13-2002 04:41 AM

I usually wear the pink shoes with the outfit partly because I don't have updated black heels...but that is what next week is for. The pink usually looks great with the outfits that I mentioned because with my coloring I can wear a light pink lip with a bright pink sheer gloss on top of that, and that combination of pink on the face and feet really tie in the colors.

Shark_in_Skirt 09-13-2002 04:47 AM

Hey babe!

I know you are going to get tons of compliments on that outfit. ;)

XOXO,
Annie.

aephi alum 09-13-2002 08:59 AM

Wow... you've really thought out your rush outfits. I wasn't nearly as organized, but then, I rushed in the Northeast.

For pref, go with the blue. Many chapters wear black, and blue will help you stand out. You might want to have a light wrap with you, in case it's chilly... nothing like trying to talk when your teeth are chattering :) and if it's not cold they'll just take it at the door.

UCLAgirl 09-19-2002 01:19 PM

update

The shopping trip was a complete blast and now the clothes are subject to a bit of change.

For the second day of rush I’ll be wearing a racer back-spaghetti strap navy blue dress with a tan sweater tied around my shoulders. Gold colored Dr. Scholl’s sandals, pearls and the balled pearl necklace. As for the black shoes for pref I found some adorable cutout pumps that are classy yet look my age. I also will wear a beautiful Tiffany’s silver chain necklace for the third night, but still pearls the last night.

I would like to thank all of you that have PM’d me with your support. It really means a lot. Today I move in and Monday we start recruitment. Wish me luck!!!

violets 09-19-2002 01:42 PM

UCLAgirl,
You are going to look wonderful! It's so good to be organized and plan ahead so you can actually relax and enjoy the experience of recruitment.
Now that you've planned all your tremendously adorable sounding outfits, you have time to read up on all the amazing organizations you have to choose from!
www.npcwomen.org has links to all your choices.

In addition, I suggest you consider journalism as your major, you are a fabulous writer and with your obvious passion for fashion I could see you working at Vogue!

Good luck!
violets:)

valkyrie 09-19-2002 07:51 PM

Oooh, I can't wait to hear all about your rush! So many great houses to choose from and so many great outfits! I hope I'm not the only one who enjoys reading about the clothes as much as I enjoy reading about the rush itself. Thanks for sharing!!

sbhill2 09-19-2002 07:57 PM

Wow....you are so organized and ready for each day of RUSH. I wasn't that organized at all. My Rho Chi came to each of our rooms and we showed off our outfits to her for each day and she told us whether or not it was appropriate. When in doubt, ask your Rho CHi when you meet her. Good luck with RUSh and let us know the details after each round! You are the new feeder of our addiction to RUSH stories. Good luck!
Go Delta Gamma!

Shark_in_Skirt 09-19-2002 10:55 PM

Hey!

How did move-in go?!

XOXO,
Annie.

UCLAgirl 09-20-2002 12:21 PM

Move in was so great. Like I told you before I did early move in and it was so easy. All of the residence hall people were still decorating and so my compensation for an easy move in is no "rah rah" greeting, but I can live with that. I didn't have to wait for an elevator; since I am on the top floor (7) that is a really really good thing. Now my parents won't refer to this as "the day from hell" as they do the other move ins. While granted no one is here....it is soooo quiet... I liked the idea of getting settled myself, finding the local radio stations, and putting up all of my pictures and puting away all of my shoes (don't ask me how many...I didn't count!). I hope that your move in goes well and that you and your roomates get along. Granted I haven't met mine yet, but I have a good feeling.

Annie already knows but in case you other gals didn't know...I have a great intrest in fashion. I also do makeup-artistry for formal and costume events. Pretty much I am the type of gal that has been reading Vogue and Allure since the age of seven. Even then I knew that pink would soften my skin tone!

sweetsister 09-20-2002 12:37 PM

 I come from a Northern chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma on a small college campus. In fact, we are the only GLO on campus. This whole business of what to wear is foreign to me. I have been reading all these different rush threads in which pnm's are freaking out about what to wear and I think it is rediculous. Maybe it is just because my chapter is highly isolated from the rest of the greek world, but we don't put that much emphasis on dress code. We like to focus on getting to know our pnm's as people, rather than as fashion models.

UCLAgirl 09-20-2002 12:45 PM

While I can see where you are comming from, you have to understand that a love for clothes is just something that makes me "me". I wear skirts all of the time because I like to, not because I think it will impress others. I am what one would call creative or artsy, so an expression of color and style have always been one of my great passions. I hope that clears everything up.

CarolinaDG 09-20-2002 02:33 PM

Clothes

It really just depends on the school, from what I know. I go to a Southern school, and clothing's VERY important. If I had shown up to Pref night in a sundress, then I would have stuck out like a sore thumb. Just keep in mind that even though our school's different from yours, it doesn't mean that either way is right or wrong, it's just... well... different.

I kept seeing these adorable Michael Stars tops in magazines, so I finally journeyed to Shadyside (top shopping district here) to check them out. They are the size of a baby onesie!! Are they really "one size fits all"??!?

sororitygirl2 09-20-2002 05:52 PM

Michael Stars shirts stretch A TON... they should fit sizes XS through L pretty well, although they will probably be a bit too tight on anyone larger.

I have four and love them... I wear them all the time.

MelissaS 09-20-2002 06:37 PM

Wow, I just love how you described your outfits. They sound adorable!!! I'm sure you'll look fabulous.

Good luck!!!!

HI There,
Phi Sig is the only NPC on our campus so we don't do fomal recruitment either. But most of the surrounding schools near us have formal recruitment as well. I've been at recruitment for Theta Upsilon Chapter and from what I've seen when you have a few hundred women going through recruitment and you can only invite back a limited number you need to take everything in to consideration, including dress style. Plus in formal recruitment you only have 20-45 minutes to meet these women each day and then vote on who to invite back. Distinctive clothing helps remind you of some people.

After seeing formal recruitment part of me wishes we weren't the only NPC at CSUDH but the other part of me likes being able to do informal and COB continously without worries. The part that wants more formal recruitment wants it so that there's more structure since there are other sororities on campus who would then have to follow NPC recruitment rules.

UCLAgirl, I hope that you have a wonderful rush experience. Don't forget to wear or bring comfortable shoes during first round.

Which Dorm?

UCLAgirl, which dorm are you living in? (I am a UCLA grad!) I'm glad you are going to post about your rush experience! I am in a Latina sorority and our membership process is quite different, so I am eager to see how things are done in the UCLA Panhellenic. Best wishes to you! I hope you find the sisterhood you are looking for!

bruinaphi 09-20-2002 08:01 PM

UCLA girl,

You know I wish you the best of luck and hope you'll have a wonderful time. It is so funny to me to read your thread b/c I too moved in early and already had all of my outfits picked out. Of course, I lived in Dykstra (6th floor rocked!) and move in was a nightmare with 10 floors and one elevator. Are you in DeNeve? I hear they are amazing. One of our good family friend's sons is a freshman and he is living in DeNeve.

The shoes thing is super important b/c walking bruin walk to the row and back kills! Rush was my first introduction to the fact that walking across UCLA really is uphill in both directions. My best friend and I brought our rush shoes in a little bag and left it with our rho chis during the parties.

Can't wait to hear how everything goes!

Laura

UCLAgirl 09-20-2002 09:50 PM

Thanks for the tips about shoes in the bags lauradav...I will keep that in mind... my pref shoes have a 3ish inch heel! I am in Reiber and I love it. The top floor has a beautiful view of the hills past De Neve Drive. Just trees to stare out at...a very nice feel. I also have friends in Dykstra and DeNeve and they are really excited (most people move in on Sunday). Ooh how I cannot wait for recruitment to start! And since I have all of this free time I have been doing tons of research about all the different sororities so I will be able to keep them all apart from one another when the whirlwind of recruitment really starts!

Shark_in_Skirt 09-21-2002 04:22 AM

I'm leaving in a couple of hours and I *know* that this will be the move-in from hell, as your parents put it.

Did not get any sleep tonight.... am driving out of here in about two hours!

Glad that you're settling in so well. I wish UCR would have let me move in early.

Hope you have a really nice roommate! So far my girlfriends have had very, erm, interesting roommates. Luckily, mine sounds like a great girl.... hope yours is also!

XOXO,
Annie.

gphiangel624 09-21-2002 03:11 PM

Yay, Annie's moving in today! I'm sure you won't be able to read this for while bc. move-in can be so crazy! If you're feeling lonely or anything, talk to my friend Sarah (she's the RHA Vice President and she lives in Lothian Hall)... RHA (Residence Hall Association) will probably have some sort of presentation this weekend, so you'll probably see her or something- she's a sweetheart and I told her about you last night (we went out for my birthday- I'm finally 21!). She's a sophomore, going through recruitment this year, too, and she's from Sacramento.

Anyways, hope everything is going well and I'm so excited for recruitment now!

Update

I just got back from the welcome reception and I still have the orientation meeting later tonight. I really should have eaten more today because all I had was a granola bar and water…so part of the way through I had to sit down. I have to say that at first it was all a little over whelming. You get a name tag and then some girls escorted me and my roommate through a passageway of all the fraternities with tables set up, to a fenced in area by the side of the stadium. She escorted us to two girls and then she left. The area was small and loud and a little intimidating because all of these girls were there and no one knew whether you were supposed to walk over and talk to them yourself or if they were supposed to go over and talk to you.. Overall everyone that I met was totally sweet and I would love to learn more about the girls in the houses and the organizations themselves.

Then there was the orientation meeting in Moore 100. That was packed so it means like 300 to 400 max girls are going to rush. There are a lot of second and third years in my Rho Chi group. Everyone is gorgeous and interesting so I hope that I can stand out somehow. I am excited but nervous….I really hope everything works out!

Don't worry we'll eat tons of breakfast tomorrow morning!!!:)

gphiangel624 09-24-2002 01:54 AM

Good luck with recruitment UCLAgirl! You know we're all breathing these threads like crazy! I have to throw in my shameless plug for Gamma Phi though- they helped start my chapter in 1975 and then they left UCLA... but they're back now and I know they're strong! Good luck!

leilanimoon 09-24-2002 02:29 AM

hey uclagirl, there were a lot of 2nd and 3rd years in my group as well. good luck with everything, girlie! You can check out my thread to hear about what's gone on so far. I'll be checking yours out, too, throughout the week. I hope we both get the houses we love!!! This is so exciting!

GPhiBLtColonel 09-24-2002 04:02 AM

I echo gphiangel624......

...even though you ARE at my alma mater (USC)'s crosstown rival, I simply MUST put in a plug for Gamma Phi Beta -- let the crescent moon shine on you during recruitment -- Go GFB !!!!!

:D :D :D :D

XOMichelle 09-24-2002 02:05 PM

Shameless plug

... but I don't feel shameful!

Yea Chi Omega!

One of our rush advisors is rom the UCLA chapter and she is the greatest girl in the world.

violets 09-24-2002 02:55 PM

Go UCLA!

UCLAgirl,
Of course you will stand out--you're extremely articulate and clearly excited for Rush, those qualities are absolutely noticed in a pnm!
Have a wonderful time, recruitment can be exhausting, nerve-wracking, and overwhelming, but it's also exciting, fun, and emotional. Keep notes each night on what you loved about each chapter, that will help you choose and be a wonderful memor to reflect upon.
Good luck, and keep writing, we love hearing every detail!
violets

CutiePie2000 09-24-2002 03:01 PM

And of course, I have to put in my plug for Delta Gamma!
WOO WOO!
