"Sorority whores and frat boy rapists"?!

I know the subject is offensive, and I apologize, but that's the very reason I started this thread.

Yesterday there was an evangelist on campus and he was stirring up a lot of trouble. My friend told me that he said that there are no "real" women at Purdue, all the girls who wear shorts and skirts might as well run around yelling "rape me, rape me, rape me!", that all fraternity "boys" are rapists and that every sorority girl is a "lusty hussy".

So today I decided to go look for him and see if he was back. He was, and a crowd of students were sitting on the lawn, listening to him. Mainly laughing and, of course, arguing with him.

I could not believe some of the things he was saying. He said that nearly all of our campus is going to Hell because all we care about is sex, masturbating, alcohol and rock and roll music. And he kept bashing the Greek system over and over. It was pretty obvious that I was in a sorority. After all, my whole house wore our new bright pink Sigma Kappa shirts today. We were very easy to spot, even in a crowd.

I had managed to keep quiet until he said that every member of the Greek system was going to burn in Hell because the only reason someone becomes Greek is to get drunk and "fornicate, fornicate, fornicate!" Then he was talking about the Bible and he said that "wicked Delilah" was probably the first sorority girl. "And no doubt she was a Tri-Delt because they are the sluttiest of all whores!" My mouth was like hanging wide open! I couldn't believe he just said that!!

Now, I'm not a Tri-Delt... I don't even have any close friends who are... but as a member of the Greek community, I decide that I am going to speak up and say something. So I told him that he has no right to judge anyone because he is a sinner also and no better than the rest of us. And most importantly, what he was saying was false. Then he told me that I was going straight to Hell because I was a member of a Pagan organization. I told him that I was Christian and that actually, most GLO's were based on Christian values. I even went as far as saying that a lot of ritual is taken directly from the Bible. He responded with, "That's just to brainwash the naive girls like you into thinking they are in a Christian sorority when they are actually a part of the evil Greek system and will ultimately become fornicating slutty whores."

Then we quoted, "judge not, yest ye be judged" and he told us that that didn't apply to him because he was Christian. According to him, since I admitted to drinking alcohol, I wasn't a real Christian because I was a sinner. However, he said he was not a sinner because he was Christian.

My question is... what do you do when something like this happens? Just let it go in one ear and out the other? I really have a hard time doing that because what he is saying is so offensive and so false! The man is absolutely nuts. He isn't on campus to help guide people. He is there to cause trouble.

I told him he wasn't acting like a Christian because he was looking down on everyone. Instead of damning us all to Hell, he should be praying for us if he is that concerned about Purdue's student body and Greek community.

I took one of his booklets. Inside are tons of stories about the bad things he did before he was "saved". There is also a link to his website: www.thecampusministry.org I haven't checked it out yet, but I'm gonna. Who knows what kind of crap they have on there...

This group travels to colleges all over the country so don't be surprised if you see "Brother Jim" or one of his friends on your campus... especially if you live in the Midwest!

RockChalk 09-06-2002 06:05 PM

Preachers come to my campus all the time. I applaud your efforts to defend the Greek system, but understand that this guy is seeking attention of any kind. By arguing with him, you gave him the attention that he so obviously craves. The next time he comes, just walk right by as if he isn't even there. Don't stoop to his level by trying to argue with him. You might as well be talking to a brick wall.

PandaOnProzac 09-06-2002 06:05 PM

Weird shiet yo. Obviously he's playing off the stereotype.

The best thing to do in this situation is show some famous greeks that live good lives.

I wouldn't pick Bill Clinton though.

Jhawkalum 09-06-2002 06:10 PM

Brother Jim was an annual show at KU. There were lots of other clowns who show up on campus telling us how we were all going to hell because we were educating and enlightening ourselves. My least favorite was Fred Phelps and the Westboro baptists (jerks who protested Matthew Shephard's funeral) but most people learned to ignore them by the time they were sophomores because we realized these finatics could not relate to us at all -- most people who are that closed minded don't go to college. I'll be praying for them.

AOII_Luv 09-06-2002 06:10 PM

I thought that only happened at IU! When the weather gets nice, Brother Dan stands in the grassy area between Ballantine and Woodburn.

He gets the same attention. People sit there and listen to him bash all of the students. Again, most laugh while others argue with him. No matter how much you argue, he is always right...in his mind. There was even a time when there was a group of people carrying LARGE signs saying things about how bad the students were and that we all needed to repent.

Honestly, I have never heard him say anything bad about the Greek system. That is also probably because I miss it when he does say something.

I don't know what to say about him or your visitor. Obviously, the things they are both saying are very hurtful. I can only feel sorry for these people.

Wrong way to spread the gospel of Jesus

OK, I usually try not to get into the "controversy" threads, but this time I'm compelled to post!

I'm a born-again Christian, and I know other GLO members who are strong in their Christian faith as well. For this "preacher" to condemn all Greeks to Hell is way out of line. So much for spreading the love of Jesus! Christians come from all GLOs, including Tridelta and Chi Omega!

For more info on Christians in GLOs, might I recommend the following sites:

ball state

I don't remember if this is the same guy that we had on our campus, but we have a guy like that on campus at ball state all the time...H'e's so annoying...He broke off on a girl that lived ony my floor last year because she was there litening to him with her girlfriend. :D It was definately a scene, afterwhich he gave her one of his pamphlets and wrote something about dildo's being the devil on it... It was too funny though...

PiKapp Raider 09-06-2002 07:25 PM

You just have to ignore people like that. They "know" they are right and will not even let you get a word in edgewise (I think it's because they are afraid you'll have a point). But, also, remember that his ideas came from somewhere (as misduided as they were) he may have met a greek or two that he used to judge the entire greek system. What I'm saying is: don't let people like that effect your opion of Christians as a whole. As a devout Christian I know he is not the standard!! (And I also know that I am not a fornicating drunkard who is going to hell because I'm greek)

lifesaver 09-06-2002 07:45 PM

I say ignore him. You'll never change their minds.

I cans stand fanatics...regardless of religion.

PSUSigKap 09-06-2002 08:14 PM

we have a similar guy at penn state. i don't know what his name is, but we call him the "willard preacher", cuz he stands outside one of the main class buildings on the mall, funnily enough called willard ;) anyway, my favorite quote of his is "prostitutes would never make it at penn state, cuz all you girls give it away for free." i've never heard him go on about the greek community. mainly cuz i never stop to hear him speak. he's out there every day rain snow or shine. and good for you perduegirlie for defending sigma kappa and greek life as a whole!!! snaps!

PhiSigSandy 09-06-2002 08:36 PM

I understand u Purduegirlie,
That guy and his posse( im pretty sure it's the same guy) come to my school every year, and makes a fool out of himself.....yeah he tells us we are whores and sinners and we are going to hell...but really in god's eyes who really is the sinner??? the one who points out everyones elses supposed sins.....I try to ignore or just leave campus when he is there because why give him any part of my time....i really thought it was only my school that this guy went to i guess hes on a mission to tell everyone they are going to hell...when really he's the biggest sinner of all.....

Richard(SNU) 09-06-2002 09:05 PM

NPR did a show on Brother Jim Gilles last year. He's been at this for
twenty years now. He even has a daughter in college somewhere in the
midwest. Someone needs to get her into a sorority and hook her up
with a boyfriend.

Anyways here's his story...

http://www.thecampusministry.org/testimony.htm

kdonline 09-06-2002 09:30 PM

OMG, Brother Jim is STILL going around college campuses!?!?!? He was doing it when I was in school 20 years ago!!!!

It was ALWAYS a show...very funny to listen to. In fact, word spread quickly whenever he came...gee, I wonder how his kids are - he used to bring them along too. They were about 4-5 years old, so I guess they're in their 20s!?

And congrats to you PurdueGirlie, for taking a stance.

AOIIBrandi 09-06-2002 09:52 PM

We had a guy like that at USF. I found out he was in my major and in one of my classes. I almost couldn't hold it in one day.

It was hurricane season and he said all the people on the island nations were asking to die because they didn't do anything about getting out of the storm. I don't know about you, but the last time I checked most of the inhabitants are poor so air fare was probably out of the question and taking a boat into the middle of a hurricane is probably taking your life into your own hands more than trying to sit it out on the island. I'm thinking doesn't make too much sense. Anyway one of my friends had been found dead that day, and all I can think is I know she didn't get up this morning and say please God let me get in an accident and die today - she was also one of the most devout christian people I know. I just left school crying.,

Anyway, he also had all the lines about women wearing shorts, short skirts, and even pants. He even tried to pick a fight with a Muslim. Then someone brought up his past alcoholism and drug addiction along with proliferate fornication. He used the same line about he was saved so it was OK for him to judge...whatever  I guess you just have to laugh them off.

dzjen27 09-06-2002 10:00 PM

I agree that the best way to deal with this is to ignore him. If people stop showing up, then he'll stop showing up, too.

Jen

KillarneyRose 09-06-2002 10:02 PM

I read that Jim guy's "life story". It cracked me up! Do you all think the "Garth" character from "Wayne's World" is based on him???

MoxieGrrl 09-06-2002 10:32 PM

I wonder if this guy dated a sorority girl.....who eventually dumped him for being a whackjob. One just has to wonder what in God's name possessed this guy to go off against Greeks. I mean, seriously, if those things *were* true, who cares? There are still serial killers, baby rapists, and Christina Aguilara running around. :p

valkyrie 09-06-2002 10:48 PM

I agree with the people who say to ignore him. I'm sure that's not easy and completely understand your frustration with the situation, but he probably enjoys the attention -- he probably finds arguments exciting and enjoys them, because if he didn't, I'm guessing he would be spreading his "word" in a less abrasive manner.

I think that the vast majority of people recognize guys like this for what they are and don't take an ounce of what they say seriously, so I wouldn't worry too much about what he says.

Mystic Cat32 09-06-2002 10:50 PM

Then we quoted, "judge not, yest ye be judged" and he told us that that didn't apply

This man is clearly a fool.

Peaches-n-Cream 09-06-2002 11:15 PM

I have never had this type of experience on campus. Whenever I encounter that type, I just say. "Thank you. Have a nice day." :)

Kevin 09-06-2002 11:44 PM

Hey -- doesn't the Bible have a prescribed punishment for heretics? Can't we stone him or something?

IvySpice 09-07-2002 12:50 AM

Brother Jim

Ah, Brother Jim!

Rest assured, his condemnation is not specific to Greeks whatsoever. He's just hitting that topic on Greek-heavy state campuses because he knows that's what will get the most attention there.

I got to know Brother Jim pretty well when I was dating a guy who went to Oberlin College, which has no Greek system, but which takes enormous pride in its large, open, and accepted queer population. What do you know...Brother Jim didn't have a word to say about Greeks at Oberlin, but he sure had a lot of opinions to share about "f*gs" and "abominations" and the various ways they were going to suffer in hell for loving each other. Needless to say, this got him quite a bit of attention (and provoked some rather colorful counter-demonstrations/love-ins from the local population of drag queens, Goth lesbians, etc.)

Honestly, most Obies agree with Brother Jim about Greek systems, albeit for opposite reasons, so don't take his anti-Greek criticism personally. He's simply about attention-grabbing condemnation of people who join any group he dislikes. He knows people at PSU, KU, etc. hold the Greek system in high esteem, just as Obies prize their tolerant/countercultural self-image, and he goes for the jugular wherever he goes.

I really dislike preachers even though I am a proud Catholic. Whenever preachers or outward Christian people go up to me with their "ur goin to hell" crap and their REPENT NOW! attitude I always have just one thing to say.

Matthew 6:5-8 'nuff said

"And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. "

wreckingcrew 09-07-2002 02:50 AM

Yes Panda!

That is one of my favorite verses also and one that i think someone should quote to these nutjobs. We have one that comes to A&M occaisionally, Tom Short i think his name is, but i've never heard him have anything disparaging to say against Greeks. Course, that's probably cuz A&M is not exactly known as a Greek friendly school.

I remember in Daytona last spring break the guys outside all the bars, harassing us as we left, tellin us we were all going to hell and such. It really got em started when i told em to leave me alone, that i'm Catholic and was saved when Jesus died on the Cross for us all.

If they keep botherin me after the Catholic thing, i usually tell em to watch out, cuz once the Pope gives the word, we're takin em all out, Godfather style :D

To Panda on Prozac
I like your slam dunk of this idiot. As a Catholic you might remember that in the pre Vatican II days the Church used to warn against the deadly or capital sins. One of these was "Presumption". Sure sounds like this guy qualifies. To say that this doesn't apply to him because he is not a sinner sounds pretty shakey to me. He presumes a perfection that only the Lord achieved. His words are words of hate (another of those deadly sins) and not the words of one who would serve the Lord's purposes. Remember who said "Non serviam"?

What I don't understand is why these so-called Christians are so quick to condemn so many to hell. As I recall, the message that Jesus taught was one of forgiveness, reconciliation, and redemption. I seem to recall He sought out the sinners and befriended them. He did not berate them. I admire people who live their faith principles and prove their Christianity by their deeds not their words.
I just have to wonder who this guy really serves. I suspect it isn't the Lord. Perhaps the only thing to say to this character is "Retro me, satane"!

Shine 09-07-2002 03:12 AM

Ahh...good old Brother Jim.

I can't wait for him to come back to ASU after our little porn scandal.

My freshman year I was walking by and talking on my cell phone. He pointed to me and told me I was going to hell for dressing like a hussy and using a cell phone to deal my drugs and get my sex.

I was talking to my mother.

Fewdfreak 09-07-2002 03:56 AM

While I've not seen him on my campus, I think that he's, or some friend of his or something, has been in the "bar district" where I come from, which is near 3 colleges. We were down there one night and there is this guy standing on the landscaping bricks. He was reading out of the bible and has some little kid passing out flyers. My friends were all like "What are you doing?" and he was like "Preaching the LORD!" and some of my friends argued like Catholic stuff with him, and he is like "Catholics are going to hell because the pope is just a ploy for money to sponsor sin." I'm not Catholic but that was a little mean. Also he told about his bad stuff he did back in the day and he raced motorbikes or something. What a nut, he even told my friend, who was wearing a cross necklace that god knew that she was a hypocrite, because crosses are a false representations of the LORD! What was he doing looking at her chest in the first place... Another time he was down there, he had the whole family with him, and a big audience that was arguing with him...

DRau 09-07-2002 03:59 AM

I managed to answer my own question on further investigation.... The fact that someone would BRAG about this sort of this just reinforces this thread....

From one of the 'newsletters' on the site... Sorry it's long but my jaw was dropped the entire time I read this!!!!
-----
You may have heard the rumor a few months ago that I spent five days in the slammer. I wish that I could say that it was not true but I cannot. Are you ready for a wild story?

The campus is Indiana University of Pennsylvania. It is one hour away from Export, Pa. I have preached on that campus at least four times. Each of the four times I have taken students from the Free Gospel Bible Institute with me. The first two visits the FGBI students and I had great meetings. On the third visit I was arrested by a campus security officer sporting a long black cape, a double billed hat and a long curved pipe calling himself “inspector.” Acting as my own attorney I beat the University in Court.

I returned this past October 5, thirteen years since my arrest. I was hoping that Sherlock would not be there. Hoping for the best but prepared for the worst, I brought seventeen students with me, my family of four and Brothers Mike and Timothy Petit. We were armed with a video camera, an audio tape recorder and two photo cameras.

I began preaching and within fifteen minutes two squad cars came to the scene, one car was code three with lights and sirens a blaring. Out of this car came the “Inspector.” He walks up to me and basically arrests me on sight. After the inspector handcuffs me, two other officers try to grab the video camera from Brother Tim Petit who naturally recoils to protect the camera. My wife, Sister Bonnie, jumps in and takes the video camera from Brother Tim Petit. The officers grab the video camera from Sister Bonnie and arrests Brother Tim Petit for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Sister Bonnie begins to take photos with our photo camera that was strapped around her neck. Next, one of the officers threatens to arrest Sister Bonnie if she does not turn over her photo camera to him. Sister Bonnie begins to pray out loud for guidance. At this time Brother Trey Dickerson begins to preach resulting in the officers leaving Sister Bonnie and swarming to him stopping him from preaching. Sister Bonnie stealthfully leaves the scene and secures the photo camera in our truck in order to preserve the evidence. Then, one of the officers snatches Gospel tracts out of my seven-year-old daughter Gabrielle’s hands and prohibits my ten-year-old son Aaron from getting more tracts out of my briefcase.

No, this story does not stop here, it gets worse. The officers transport Brother Tim and me to the campus police station. They processed Brother Tim quite rapidly but they held me for three and a half hours in extremely tight handcuffs causing my left thumb to go numb. At around three thirty I was transported to the County Magistrate in order for him to set my bail. Before the Magistrate enters the Courtroom, Sherlock goes back into the Judge’s Chamber and fills the Magistrate’s head with lies. At three forty five on a Friday afternoon the Magistrate enters the Courtroom and sets my bail at five thousand straight cash. That left me with fifteen minutes on a Friday afternoon to collect five thousand dollars because the Court closed at four. So I went to jail until that next Tuesday because that following Monday was Columbus Day, a federal holiday.

Before I left the Courtroom I was able to give all of my possessions to Sister Bonnie. Miraculously, I was able to keep and transfer my audio tape recorder to Sister Bonnie. The tape recorder was in my front shirt pocket and somehow escaped not only the frisking by Sherlock but observation by all of the officers in the Campus Police Station. God may have made it invisible to them.

While in jail, I was given an orange suit to wear. We regret that we did not take a picture of me in my orange suit and brown church shoes. Throughout the five days, I witnessed to twenty to twenty five inmates. I earned their respect after the first basketball game. All of the basketball players were getting angry, cursing and verbally fighting with each other. We came back into the cellblock and an inmate, who brags how he does 1100 push-ups a day, sits across from me and says, “You don’t cuss, do you?” He did not even introduce himself nor was he outside playing basketball with us. We talked about cursing for five minutes when he asked me the next question, “You don’t drink, do you? Followed by his third question, “You don’t smoke, do you?” I talked with him for twenty-five minutes and ended with my personal testimony. Every one in the cellblock knew that I had ole 1100 push up man on my side if I needed him. Those criminals knew how Christians are to live. Another inmate, who professed to being a Muslim, sat down next to me and brought a King James Bible and a Quran. We had a Bible/Quran study right there in the cellblock. The next morning, the Muslim's cell mate told me privately that the Muslim, upon returning from our discussion the previous night, declared to the cell mate, that he was giving up on Islam. Glory!!

Sherlock ended up charging me with six different charges. Two of which were felony riot and felony wiretap. This is the very first time that I have ever been charged with a felony let alone two felonies. Before the Preliminary Hearing on November 28, 2001, I called the city and campus newspaper offices and they both sent reporters to the hearing. A Business Law class from the university sat in on the hearing as well. During the preliminary hearing Sherlock actually testified that there were 1000 riotous students with their fists in my face. On cross-examination by my attorney, the two witnesses against me, a self-professed “Christian” lesbian and Sherlock were tied into knots as they contradicted themselves thus exposing their lies. As they made utter perjurious fools of themselves we in the Courtroom were laughing, shaking our heads and giving each other the thumbs up. The two felonies were dropped along with a misdemeanor riot charge. As of this writing I have not heard from the Trial Court on whether they are going to pursue this fiasco. Please pray that the three remaining charges will be dropped before trial.

We thank you for your love and prayers.

I think the Tri-Delt national office should sue this creep for slander for singling them out.

There's one guy with 4 daughters and he has the same kind of "ministry". A few years ago on a campus, he announced to the students that his teenaged daughters had never seen a naked man. College campuses being what they are--about 2 minutes later, they had seen a lot of them.:D

FUNNY!!!

Too bad it's not the '70s, we would have protested the protester!

We had people like that on campus ALL-THE-TIME! It was Houston and every Hare Krishna, Zen Buddhist, Anti-Everything type of person would walk around the Union (The Greek hangout) and hand out their pamphlets and spout off their philosophies.

On the few occasions that these "prophets" crossed the line with lies, false statistics or just plain CRAPOLA, we would gather in our "letters" and just watch. Sometimes we'd get the Frisbees flying or play tag football. It usually ended up a distraction and the crowd would disperse or JOIN us in our game! (we were a little loud):D

swissmiss04 09-07-2002 10:49 AM

Too bad Bro. Jim doesn't come to UA...being the no. 3 (?) party school and having a strong Greek system, he'd give us an earful or so. I'm a Muslim, though raised Christian, and I still believe in what Jesus said during his Sermon on the Mount and other occasions. At one point, I think somewhere in the book of Matthew he states "Do not remove the splinter from your brother's eye until you have removed the log from your own." And since when is anyone above the rules of the Bible?! That would be like a President being above the laws of the country, which happens in dictatorships, but not in a fair and just government. Assuming that God is fair and just, which he is, He not going to exalt some people over others. I'm sure he'd have some stuff to say to me too about my "heathen" religion and that I need to "stop praying to Mohammed." What really ticks me off about his kind is that they refuse to get their facts straight and preach solely off of misguided interpretation and insufficient evidence. All I could suggest is that if anyone is approached by this joker, just smile and continue on. Arguing gets nowhere and if you ignore him, you kind of douse his little flame w/ water. Eventually the flame goes out and he gets a real job!

lionlove 09-07-2002 10:59 AM

This is what the guy wrote in a newsletter about visiting a college in Alaska the day after 9/11

"That Wednesday, the day after the terrorist attacks in the lower forty-eight, a Muslim woman was most vociferous for her Allah. The crowd grew quiet and stared at her. I could feel the tensions rise as I actually felt that her safety was in the balance. I decimated the Islamic religion by reading from a Quran that a student brought to me in mocking defiance of my stated knowledge thereof. I quickly diverted the crowd’s attention from the foolish Mohammedan to some other topic, as her diatribe was just too much, too soon."

With friends like that in Christianity, who needs enemies

carnation 09-07-2002 11:00 AM

Okay, I just remembered the names of the 2 who came to Auburn and caused all those guys to streak. It was Brother Jed and Sister Cindy. They were so horrible--I don't know why the administration let them have a gathering.

Lady Pi Phi 09-07-2002 11:32 AM

Kind of sounds like my relatives. As musch as I love them, I can't stand having their religion stuffed dwn my throat. I have been told that I am responsible for original sin, and since my mother is a non practicing catholic she's going straight to hell, and me being her daughter I am going there too. I just ignore it. These people need you to argue with them. If everyone ignores them, it defeats their purpose.

Emily

P.S on a side not, God and Allah (sp?) are the same being. I wonder what this Brother Jim would have to say about that.

Most likely, Lady Pi Phi, he would pull a Franklin Graham and say that God and Allah are not the same thing...nevermind the fact that in churches in the Arab world, they called God "Allah" long before Islam ever came about. It's like saying the French Christians don't worship the same god that American Christians worship because they call him "Dieu". This reminds me of a campaign in FL back in the 50's for a senate seat...one candidate said that the other candidate's brother was seen "matriculating w/ young innocent women" and that his sister was a practicing "thespian" in New York. Because the area he ran the ads in was one that wasn't affluent and well educated, people bought into the myth and the guy lost. Ignorance is truly the work of the devil.

Wow, it is really wierd that his name is brother jim, because there is an african american man named brother jim at MY campus who does the EXACT same thing, and the greeks on my campus are accustomed to him now. what we do, is we just give him NO attention. i know it is really hard when he is bashing the greek system like that when he doesnt even know anything about it, but just walk on, dont give him attention, and neither will other people.
