Justin's VMA Performance

Hey I was just wondering what any of you thought about Justin Timberlake's VMA solo performance tonight. I was expecting a lot more than what I saw... let me know what you all thought...

SoCalGirl 08-30-2002 02:40 AM

Agreed

I was expecting more. But I'm not sure of what.

I got really disapointed when it was him and the 4 male back up dancers. It made me wish the rest of the *NSYNC boys were up there.

He seemed to be lip syncing but was way off. We all know he can sing, so I'm thinking that he was lip syncing due to the fact that it's a really new song. I've only heard it once on the radio. Maybe he's not comfortable singing it live yet. But I'd credit the "being off" part on some technical problem. Like his ear piece had too much of a delay or something. :(

Where the heck was Lance tonight???

moe.ron 08-30-2002 06:18 AM

I herd Axl Rose played last night (refused to call them GnR cause they are without Slash or Duff)

kddani 08-30-2002 07:12 AM

Justin was just trying to imitate Michael Jackson.... his dancing, his style of dress. I REALLY expected MJ to come out during the song... he was there at the VMAs, and NSync has worked with him before.

I HATED the way the show was shot. Whatever filters they used on the camera, etc. made it look horribly NOT live.

Axel and whoever were horrible. Axel could have at least PRACTICED beforehand. Half the words didn't even come audibly out of his mouth. He needs to hit the gym and get a vocal coach. I LOVE Guns, but yikes, this was scary. ESPECIALLY the guitarists, who looked like they came straight from Marilyn Manson's stylist.

I'm also sad that I missed Christina... the 10 minutes I don't watch the show, she's on. I always get a kick out of how ghetto she tries to act. She's from friggin WEXFORD, which is a well to do suburb outside of Pittsburgh. But she talks like she's from the ghetto. She actually disses Pittsburgh and the people here everytime she can. I watched the VH1 behind the music story on her, i laughed so hard. Says how much she hated HS and the people there, etc. Her ATTITUDE is why no one liked her. Several of my sisters went to High school with her and have said that she was always really snobby when she came in... she'd wear leather pants to high school and have a really snotty- i don't want to be here attitude.

Oh well, it was good for a laugh. I didnt' think Jimmy Fallon was too funny, except for when they made fun of the American Idol hosts. THat was funny as hell, those two guys are just idiots.

AOX81 08-30-2002 08:28 AM

I missed it. I'm sure I'll catch it during one of the million times that they rerun it.

I know, that totally bugged me...it was like replacement Nsync.

Totally agreed! His song and style was like Michael Jackson meets Usher (who has also been impersonating MJ lately). And yes, it didn't look live to me either!

As to the rest of the show, the performance were good and a little more varied this year. I thought Pink, Eminem, JaRule & Ashanti, and the Hives vs. the Vines all did well...my favorite was Puffy/P Diddy's ensemble performance. I knew Christina was going to end up presenting the award to Eminem, I was just expecting something more to happen.

The1calledTKE 08-30-2002 08:59 AM

Axel should just retire.

Screw Major League Baseball, I call for an MTV strike.

Anyone with me?

SigmaChiCard 08-30-2002 10:05 AM

KDdani,

I thought so too, it was on at a party I was at so I couldn't hear him, but he looked like he was trying to combine Michael Jackson and Usher into one person and make it his style....HAHA

Here here. I've been on strike since they took out alternative nation and headbanger balls.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the idea of someone in a Pittsburgh high school wearing leather pants to school

Did she go to N.A. or North Hills? I'm thinking N.A?

33girl 08-30-2002 11:39 AM

Tracy -

I think Wexford is NA but I always get those 2 confused...I think I heard when they originally came back here when she was younger she lived in Rochester (first K-12 all under one roof in the state, so you know it's not very large).

librasoul22 08-30-2002 11:49 AM

Well..

I thought Justin's performance was really good. I like *N Sync too, but he does have a solo album coming out, so he is just trying to promote that.

As far as Christina...

WHY was she wearing (rather NOT wearign that), and WHY was she trying to talk ghetto? Sigh. Not sure what she was trying to accomplish with that one.

Pink sure was drunk, lol. Matter of fact, many of the acts/presentors/acceptors seemed a little intoxicated.

APhi 08-30-2002 12:07 PM

My first thought when I saw Christina was WHOAH! Showing enough skin there! Seriously, with the top pulled up and the skirt riding that low... WAY too much. I'm also wondering if she got implants. I know she's just incredibly skinny so where did those come from? She kind of reminds me of Paris Hilton sometimes. The whole "It cost a lot of money to look this cheap" look.
*Okay, reducing bitch factor*

MTV just strikes me as more derivative and self congratulatory every time I watch it. Did it seem to anyone else that the show was kind of a retrospective of rock through the MTV era? First there was The Hives with some guy doing his best Mick Jagger, then Justin came out and tried to do Michael Jackson, then Guns&Roses did their little come back performance. It was the 70's then the 80's followed by the 90's. It all left me with the feeling that there's nothing truly new out there... Especially not on MTV.

Anyway, I think pop music is finally falling by the wayside and people are wanting more than catchy tunes and a good dance performance. Therefore, I don't think Justin will go too far on his own.

kddani 08-30-2002 01:54 PM

Killarney-
Yep, she went to N.A. She did go to Rochester when she was younger, but her mom moved the family to Wexford because Christina was having so many problems there. The same problems seemed to occur at N.A. Hmmmm....

I seriously encourage everyone to watch the Behind the Music when it comes on VH1 again.... I laughed my ass off the whole entire time at everything she was saying.

I think she did her fair share to deserve some of what she went through.

I do feel sorry for her in a way. She needs to "find herself". She's been a manufactured product trying to fit an image ever since she was a little girls (she was on Mickey Mouse club, etc.). She never had a chance to be a real kid and find her own identity. Someone probably said to her last night, hey Christina, tie this scarf around your boobs and let's cut this denim mini skirt in half and she went right along with it.

COULDN'T AGREE MORE.

That awards show was boring. He was boring *yawn*. And I like N Sync in general, but I thought he was less than riveting. Far less.

I have to say though that the album will probably do well. If the music industry can convine ANYONE that Avril Lavigne or Shakira are "punk" then they can sell this.

Omg.....exactly. I mean, Shakira, punk??!! *shakes head in disgust*

The thing that galls me about Christina is that she *does* have a beautiful voice. I'd listen to her if she wiped off the pounds of make-up and ditched the white trash gear and was just a skinny, ugly white girl singer. I mean, it worked for Fiona Apple.

LOL.

Has anyone heard her new song, "Dirty"?

Who is this chick fooling? Suburbs of PA=not the hood. Wy front, why why why?

feu_declipse 09-01-2002 11:45 PM

I too was disappointed by the VMAs - it was quite boring. I watched the Diary episode for the VMAs where Justin was talking about how hard it was preparing for the performance so I have to admit I was expecting a lot more from his performance. I thought the backdrop would go up, and there'd be more people and that was the warm up preformance. But he is a pretty good dancer - he reminds me of Usher - kinda like he's trying to be him but since they are both heavily influenced by MJ, I guess that is to be expected.
I like Shakira and all but I did not enjoy her performance.
And what was up with Micheal - was that an award or not. I looked in the papers and there was an artcle saying he thought it was and award but MTV say's there's not artist of the millenium award.

ChiOJenn78 09-02-2002 01:17 PM

Hahaha, when I saw Christina, I was like-Oh My God!! She's orange! Thats not right! Then I decided that she has to be a drag queen-thats my theory. :D

Other than that, I was bored by the whole spectacle.
