White after Labor Day?
Yes? or No?
Does this apply ONLY to shoes? Or does this mean no white shirts, pants, or shorts are to be worn? |
White after Labor Day?
Just say NO!:D
|
ST's thoughts
I say no to white shoes, but then again, I wear a size 10, so I don't indulge in white shoes, except when necessary. :p
I don't wear pure white dresses, pants, blazers, skirts, shorts, and suits past Labor Day. My 74-year-old mother was raised in New York and I learned those traditions from her. A white shirt or T-shirt, however, is acceptable year-round. As a matter of fact, when I get, err..back to normal... ;) I'm going to wear one with this khaki skirt I got from the Avenue for $10. |
Well, my advice is to NEVER wear white shoes ..... NOT EVER .... but that's just my opinion. As far as other articles of clothing, I think white is acceptable year round. Now don't get me wrong, a white linen dress is NOT appropriate for your New Year's Eve festivities. If the material is made for colder temps (wool, heavy cotton, angora, etc...), I say wear it. Also, there are so many different whites (i.e., winter white, off white, eggshell, mother of pearl (lol)) that it is very easy to wear white year round without wearing pure white.

That's what you say NOWWWWW!

Uhhhhh, I'm sure some of my Soror's including myself said this at one point and time, but that's ANOTHER subject/thread. ;) :D (I'm teasing) |

After Labor Day, put your white AWAY!! Please, DON'T believe the hype about it being a year-round color. It's NOT!
White shirts, tees, tops, etc. are cool. White bottoms are a NO-NO! White shoes.... AAAUUUGGGHHH!!! (There's just something about them..... I can't quite put my hands on it....) |

After Labor Day, I would put away the pure white clothing (except for my white shirts, of course!). During the fall and winter seasons, I think that off-white, cream, eggshell, ivory - whatever you want to call the color, is pretty acceptable, especially if the clothing is made of the heavier materials (wool for example).
Truth be told, if given a choice, I would prefer to wear off-white. :p |

I used to believe that absolutely no white, except a shirt or sweater, should be worn after Labor Day. That is mainly due to the fact that I was born and raised in Philadelphia. If you have on some white boots in October, people are going to look at you crazy and some of them will actually laugh in your face.
Now, the generally accepted rule is that in warmer climates, white is acceptable after labor day. I have tried to adapt my views on the subject, but Labor Day is Monday, so we'll see if I where white between then and Memorial Day. I am still against white shoes. I have never really liked them and, except for certain occasions, like weddings or debuntante balls, I do not think that they should ever be worn. The last time I wore white shoes was at my debutante ball and I couldn't get them suckers off fast enough. |
i used to feel the same way about white shoes - i had to wear them for my high school graduation and i couldn't get out of them soon enough. Now i have these white sandals that I love but I still think about it before I wear them. :)
Does anyone know the specific reason why people are not to wear white after Labor Day? |

There was no question in my family, you didn't wear white after Labor Day or before Easter. You would get clowned. And you know it's worse when it's your pham. Now, I *hardly* wear it. I am, however, looking for some new white shoes. Mine are not cute, and were bought in an emergency. ;) I mean, don't get it twisted, they aren't UGLY, just not cute enough to hang out with the rest of my shoes, lol. |
thanks. I had been wondering about that for a while. I wonder if it's the same reason down here in Atlanta or if it was adopted because it was proper. It snows for about half a day, and then the rest is slush and ice.
|
So when IS it ok to wear white again? Is there a day on the calendar that says when it's ok? I never understood the don't wear white after labor day, cause every day after that is AFTER labor day.

Wear White Again....
After Easter.
:D Is that right fashion gurus? |
YES!
You are correct, ma'am! :)
|
Cream is never out of fashion. ;) :D
I thought no white before Memorial Day weekend unless you are a bride or a child. I might be wrong. |
I dunno, Cream.
What I do know is that as a child on Easter Sunday morning, the white shoes, white bobby (lacey) socks, white Easter Bonnet (hat), and white gloves came out. Maybe it was just me. |
Easter is usually the kick off for white and Labor Day is the kick-out.:D :p

Sandals too??
I was having this conversation with two of my very good friends the other day, and they were telling me that along with NO WHITE after Labor day, NO SANDALS either.
Let me just say that September 3rd in minneapolis, the weather was in the high 80's. I couldn't wait to take those shoes off....it reminded me of the first week of grade school when my mom dressed me in cordoroy the first week of school....in August... So what do you all think about the NO SANDALS policy?? |

Soror, I'm in SoCal. I don't agree with the no-sandals policy. In fact, I was wearing some teal Kate Spade sandals in January, when it was over 80 degrees out. Besides, I just got these cool hot pink thong sandals at Off Fifth Saks Fifth Avenue for something like 90 percent off retail. They are going to be worn. |
LAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWDDYYYY!

NO SANDALS?????!!!!!!!!! I've never heard of that one! Too bad, the toes do not go in until the first REAL cool front comes.  |

some people at my school need to read this - no sandals - they wouldn't know what to do with themselves:). As far as they're concerned, the cold front means "wear socks with your sandals". It's horrible. Some people just do not seem to own shoes. This guy in particular went on a group trip with me, and we had to dress in business casual for one event, we had to beg him to not wear his birkenstocks. He finally found some "shoes".
It was ridiculous. |

What I hate is when folks mix their seasonal clothing. I saw some chick last year with a leather jacket and sandals. :o If it's cold enough to wear leather, it's too cold for your toes to be out! |

LOL @ the chick with the leather jacket and sandals. You know how folks up here like to get down with their wardrobe - crazeeeee!!! ;) |
If it gets sunny today
ST will wear sandals, the aforementioned hot pink thongs that I scored at Off Fifth.
|
I'm wearing sandals, too! :) Not white ones though. :p
|
HAHA
This topic reminds me of my favorite movie Serial Mom....lol....
|
YUCK!

I follow the 'no white' (pants/skirt--not blouses/shirt) rule too, but what about these rules:
No linen after Labor Day, before Easter? What about suade (sp??)? I had a shoe salesman tell me you could now wear suade year 'round. I was like yeah, right. |
