Dokme

I'm in the process of pledging for a sorority and they call their New Member Manual a DOKME. Can someone please tell me what the word DOKME means? I've heard that there a few other organizations that call their NM manuals this but I have no idea what it means. PLEASE HELP!!!

lionlove 08-27-2002 07:37 PM

I have never heard of that term. It's probably something specific to the organization you are in. Why don't you ask you new member educator?

GreekSweetie 08-28-2002 08:19 AM

The NM Educator is the one who assigned us to go and find out what DOKME means!:(

ZTAMiami 08-28-2002 08:21 AM

Are you pledging a national organization?

GreekSweetie 08-28-2002 08:23 AM

No, it's a pretty large local org, though!

MysticCat 08-28-2002 08:33 AM

If I'm not mistaken, it is the root of the English word "dogma," which means (among other things) a system of principles or teachings. My dictionary shows this etymology for dogma:

[< L < Gk, equiv. to dok(ein) (to) seem, think, seem good + -ma n. suffix]

This would seem to suggest that the meaning is something along the idea of "teaching" or "sound thinking."

Hope this helps.

Ummmm, gentlemen...did we forget the main focus of this thread? I seriously need help figuring this out.

Hootie, I've read through the entire manual and got no clues. I know the founder's names and that couldn't possibly be the answer either. I need to keep looking.

Thanks for all of your help!

I wish I could help, but I do have a suggestion of trying to find a professor who teaches Greek Language or maybe Classical Studies, that kind of thing. They might be able to help you out.
Also, try to find a professor who teaches Latin...it could be something there. I think MysticCat is on the right track with "dogma"...it makes sense to me. Good luck and let us know what happens (unless it is secret of course).

Try:

Document Of Knowledge -- Membership Education (aka DOKME)

KappaTarzan 08-30-2002 05:52 PM

newsun- if you made that up- so smart!
if you knew it- even smarter!!!
:)

damasa 08-31-2002 01:43 AM

you know, everytime i read a post by tom, I remember him using the words "tingle" and "dingle" in another post oh so long ago....

MysticCat 09-10-2002 01:14 PM

Well...?

So, GreekSweetie -- did you ever figure out what it means, and is it something you can share?

AGDZO Susan 09-10-2002 01:18 PM

Sounds like a precursor to future hazing to me! What happens if your new member group doesn't figure it out? Hmmmm....I thought New Member Educators did just that...educate! Doesn't sound like your NME is doing their job and is starting to hazing you! Pledging should be fun...not stressful or a scavenger hunt!

GreekSweetie 09-10-2002 01:20 PM

No, I didn't ever find out completely what the word stand for. However, I think we're are going to assume for the time being that

Document Of Knowledge-Membership Education

is correct! If anyone hears otherwise, please let me know!

Thanks!:)

Greeksweetie where are you?

suzymoonspider 09-15-2002 06:18 PM

Yes, where in NY do you go to school? Because the location and possibly the name of the sorority could help.

And be careful, locals in NY, have a bad reputation for hazing...if anything makes you feel uncomfortable stop:) Not that I am saying they are all bad:)

Look at things like colors, mottos, etc that might fit into it. Without more details all we can do is guess!

Optimist Prime 09-17-2002 09:21 PM

Okay Tom. lets eats!
