Sister Havana 12-25-2016 02:37 PM

Wow, doing bid day in one place is new this year, isn't it? I like that.

yes this is new. In the past PNMs received bids in their dorms individually from the Rho Gammas and then over the course of a couple of hours they trickled into their sorority houses. This year they will do one big bid day reveal and then go to the sorority houses as a group.

The waiting a day between pref and bid day is the way it has been done since the switch to completely differed recruitment.

Blue2 12-27-2016 01:59 PM

Does anyone know how many are registered this year?

ForeverRoses 12-27-2016 02:39 PM

last I heard it was in the 1600-1700 range.

IUMomma 12-31-2016 12:34 PM

My daughter will be a PNM going through IU Recruitment this year. We have everything ready - recs were sent in the fall, outfits are ready, talking points all set. It's been a long wait but she is eager to get back to campus and get on with it!

This year, the quota set is 55/house, so not quite RFM, but not quite bed quota either. Some report as many as 1900 have registered, which is about normal for IU.

We are hopeful she will find her place - she is doing a great job keeping an open mind!

I will try to keep you all updated with what I learn!

FSUZeta 12-31-2016 12:54 PM

Best of luck to her IUMomma. Looking forward to reading about her experience.

IndianaSigKap 12-31-2016 01:36 PM

Best wishes IUMomma, for you and your daughter.

KDCat 12-31-2016 01:47 PM

Quota at 55 per house is better, but not perfect. That's 1430 bids available with 1900 registered.

Hopefully, after they do this for awhile and see that it is okay, they will move to RFM.

Baby steps....

The 55 number is a minimum, there are chapters who will offer more than 55 bids. I have heard that quite a few chapters will offer 60+. Also, with 1900 registered, not all will begin the process. Some PNMs will not make grades, some will decide not to come back early, etc. I believe that approximately 1650 started the process last year with about the same number registered.

It is not 1900 registered. It's between 1600-1700. Trust me on this

55 is the minimum number of bids. chapters could elect to offer more bids- but they had to submit their quota back in October, before registration was even closed.

And IU DOES use RFM. It's just each chapter has its own quota. Consider it like ole miss or Arkansas where return rates are set with a varied quota.

IUMomma 01-01-2017 05:02 PM

That's great to know about the 1600-1700 registered. How many (%?) normally drop before the Open House rounds - because of grades, change of heart, etc?

I am hopeful things aren't quite as brutal this year as they were in years past!

Thankfully, the weather seems to be cooperating for January!

I would say the drop outs for grades or just decide not to come back is around 100. More women will drop out through the process. I don't have last year's stats in front of me, but the number of women that stayed in the process and maximized their preference list and were unmatched was actually quite low. The problem is the number that drop out during the process because they don't like the chapters inviting them back or don't maximize their preference choices.

IUMomma 01-02-2017 09:13 PM

Got it!

That seems reasonable:) I keep preaching keeping an open mind and that her feelings may change as the process goes on.

We are just thankful it's finally time to get started!

Temperatures are supposed to drop on Friday, so hopefully your daughter can stay warm!

IUMomma 01-02-2017 09:53 PM

We have been watching the weather and I think she has everything she needs. But, those are some VERY VERY COLD temps!

Thankfully, it's not sleet, ice, or inches and inches of snow!

When I went through recruitment, back in the dark ages when it was still called rush, it was so cold that winter that I parked my car near each house and stayed in it with the heat blasting until a few minute before the doors opened. Outside of one house, I had 7 girls in my tiny car. :-) We must have looked like a clown car when we all rolled out of there.

Hope she (and all the PNMs) stay warm!! and safe!!

IUMomma 01-02-2017 10:34 PM

That has me tempted to let her have a car for the first couple of weeks;) If it weren't for having to move it for those pesky basketball games, it sounds like a great plan!

ForeverRoses 01-03-2017 09:51 AM

I know when it gets really cold (and panhel approves it), we let the women come in the back door and wait in one of our side stairwells. Then they have to walk outside from the back of the house to the front and come back in the front door at the start of the party. It's not ideal, but it keeps everyone from turning into human popsicles.

jolene 01-03-2017 11:15 AM

Brrr! IU needs to switch to fall recruitment. Why do they wait for January?

IUMomma 01-03-2017 11:50 AM

I don't know the official reasoning, but I think there are many pluses and minuses with fall vs. "spring" recruitment. I think they claim it's to focus on academics first, but it seems so long to wait!

I really do wish they would have done fall though! So much easier (and cheaper!) to buy clothes for August and heat is easier than this extreme cold or even worse, snow storms like a few years ago!

The last time changing recruitment was discussed, the chapters were given a fall option- but it would have meant doing all of recruitment during the week of fall break in October. The chapters decided to move to completely differed recruitment.

There was a time when the open house rounds were held in early December and the rest of recruitment was in January. PanHellenic received a lot of negative feedback from parents and the school newspaper because the weekend was stressful and it wasn't "fair" to have recruitment during classes.

Since the majority of women sign up for recruitment once they are already on campus, I think moving to before school starts would cause many women that end up going through to miss the opportunity. but that's just my opinion.

SAMKD 01-03-2017 05:40 PM

23 houses - can't imagine!!

IUMomma 01-03-2017 06:43 PM

Quick question - does anyone know if IU hands out booklets for the PNMs to take note in? Trying to pack the tote bag that she will take with her:)

Back in the Dark Ages when I was at IU, the first round was held on a weekend in October and the rest was done in January. Talk about a long wait between first and second rounds!

I don't know anything specific about IU's recruitment, but I think it would probably be a very good idea for you to have a small notepad and pen or pencil in there for her to jot down impressions when she has a moment between houses. My daughter didn't have one and wound up trying to take notes on her schedule! Best of luck to your daughter – hope she has a fun recruitment and that it doesn't get too cold up there.

IUAnon 01-04-2017 04:10 PM

Hi! Just saw this. My daughter went through rush at IU last year. She took notes on her phone in between parties and it was a huge help. Have your daughter write down who she talked to, what they talked about, what she loved/disliked, and a few adjectives that best describe the "vibe" and the girls in the chapter. It will come in VERY handy when she has to rank all the chapters, especially when there are so many in the beginning.

FSUZeta 01-04-2017 05:23 PM

Great advice.

IUMomma 01-04-2017 05:46 PM

Thanks so much! That is exactly what our plan is! She will keep pencil and paper, but the plan is to text the notes from each house to me so I can keep a copy here at home in case something happens with her phone. Then I will assemble and resend them to her while she is at her last house and she can rank accordingly.

She goes into her first house in 15 minutes!

IUAnon 01-04-2017 06:27 PM

Good luck! My daughter was so nervous, but actually LOVED recruitment. Report back and let us all know how it goes! I remember being a basket case -- it's really fun being on the "other side" and seeing all the work that goes into it. The sororities are just as nervous as the PNMs!

IUpnmmom 01-04-2017 11:35 PM

Hello, add another Mom to the list for 2017 IU recruitment. Just spoke to my DD said her first four went well. Tomorrow is the killer day 11 houses. Already plans on changing the shoes she was going to wear. Do to all of the walking!

IUMomma 01-04-2017 11:44 PM

Yay! That's fun that there are two of us!

Yes - some wardrobe changes for tomorrow for sure. Cold AND 2-4 inches of snow! My DD will add layers and different boots (Uggs? Sperrys? Not sure!) for the day.

Overall, a solid start for her. She felt like conversations were good and has now seen what the whole thing is about. She is gaining some confidence with experience. She liked some better than others, of course but I know she's paying attention to the details and is engaged in each house.

IndianaSigKap 01-05-2017 12:00 AM

IUMomma, if there is snow on the ground Uggs are a bad choice. They get wet, then really cold and the salt/brine that is put on the roads and sidewalks will stain the suede. I would recommend some type of snow boot that won't get wet. Tomorrow will be a very long day, being warm and comfortable will make it a little more bearable.

IUpnmmom 01-05-2017 12:40 AM

Saying 60% chance of snow in B-Town tomorrow. Thanks, for the advice giving DD last minute tips and told her to go to bed! Will let you all know after Open Invite Day 2 ends Close to 8:00 pm

IUMomma 01-05-2017 11:53 AM

Snowy and cold in Bloomington this morning! She opted for extra socks instead of different boots. I tried. Maybe she will change her mind after the lunch break!

IUAnon 01-05-2017 04:32 PM

She should be OK. They shovel really well down there and they take buses most of the way between houses anyway.

IUMomma 01-05-2017 06:37 PM

She's in her snow boots now - they are cute and warm Sperrys that she got for Christmas. I feel better:)

She's not the only PNM that changed shoes at the break. A friend's daughter also changed to her heavy duty Bean boots. She said that she realized looking cute wasn't worth frostbite. :-)

IUMomma 01-05-2017 08:10 PM

I'll bet!

I have a question about this round. In a couple of houses, she and another PNM have been rushed by one active. She feels like this puts her at a disadvantage with the other PNMs. I haven't rushed on either side since 1990, so I don't know what to tell her. She was ok with it for a couple of the houses because they weren't at the top of her list. Then came the last one and she was so disappointed.

Anyone have any advice I can give her to talk her off the ledge? She's about to go into her last party for the night, so I will text her after.
