Nationals in Indianapolis
 

just out of curiosity how many glo's nationals are in indianapolis? and why are there so many on founder's road? what made indy so special? i know many of us were founded elsewhere. i did a search on this and couldn't find anything. . .

Theta on Founders Road
 

Kappa Alpha Theta is located on Founders Road. I am not quite sure why there are so many there.

There was another thread on this a while ago. The city of Indianapolis and State of Indiana give really outstanding tax breaks to fraternal organizations who have their headquarters there, so a lot of GLO's have moved there.

Taggart Manshion is on North Delaware St, dunno how far that is away from founders road.........

ASA Headquarters is in Indy on Zionsville Road. I've never been to Indy so I have no idea if where Zionsville Road is in relation to Founders Road. I hope to visit headquarters one day. :)

Alpha Chi Omega's national headquarters is on Castle Creek Parkway North Drive in Indy. And I believe the tax break is for non-profit organizations in general, not just fraternal ones.

LXA Duke Fled started it
 

This LXA exec dir spread the word on no taxes to other GLOs in the late 50s early 60s, and several joined LXA on Washington Blvd.

In the 70s the insurance company then called College Life Ins. or something like that developed some rural land way out in NW Indy, and one of the main streets was Founders Rd. They marketed this to the GLOs, and a bunch, including TKE, DU, and others, built places there. The insurance co. was headquartered in three pyramid-shaped towers.

When I visited there two years ago, the area is now almost fully developed, with a lot of non-GLO office building and all the fast-food and mid-level restaurants (Chilis, Max and Erma {my fav}, etc.) were clustered around the interchange with Indy's perimeter interstate.

Zeta Tau Alpha's International Office is in Indianapolis, IN on Founders Road.

I would have to look up the dates but LXA moved there back when because of the tax situation. Also to be in the center of the Country for better access to the Chapters for travleing purposes.

Years back, LXA helped many of the newer Greek Orgs. get things set up and worked to have more uniformity. We help set up Organizations that worked for the betterment in toto for the Greek World.

That is why Duke was so revered by the Greek Community.

I am so impartial (cause I am from IN and went to school there) but I love that so many headquaters are there!
A. It is smack dab in the middle of USA- central to all
B. Huge greek system- Purdue, IU - the biggest but many smaller schools are huge into greek (Hanover, ISU, Rose Hulman)

Plus Indy is a great town!

Where did you go to school? I go to Butler which actually is in Indianapolis! :) I think it's really cool that I see all of these nationals when I drive around. I don't remember if anyone mentioned it, but isn't the Panhel National site in Indy as well?

I also agree that Indy is a great town. Yeah for Hoosiers! :D

Indianapolis wasn't that great a place in the "good ole days", and was commonly called Naptown. For years, they bragged that they refused all federal funds and rules.

The Gary-Hammond area was called "The Region" years ago. Is that slang still around?

Sigma Nu was in Indianapolis
 

Indianapolis was selected as the location of the Fraternity's first headquarters, and on November 1, 1915 the General Offices were opened in the Lemcke Anne before moving into the main building. Biby Willis (Lambda Chapter, Washington & Lee) a past Grand Treasurer of Sigma Nu, was employed as the first General Secretary. In 1926 the central office was moved to the Illinois Building in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis served as Sigma Nu's Headquarters for forty-two years.

In 1957, Regent James W. Bradley (Epsilon Epsilon Chapter, Ok State) and his High Council took the historic step of purchasing a large home in Lexington, VA. It was ideally suited for conversion and development. The land ws lcoated on the highest hill in the corporate limits of Lexington, VA. Sigma Nu moved to its headquarters in Leington in 1958 and it was officially dedicated in 1960. The Headquarters of Sigma Nu has remained there ever since and the property has expanded to include several new facilities.

yes the northwest corner of the state is still referred to as "the region." i had never heard that expression even though ive lived here almost all of my life. in some fall classes, when students were introducing themselves and saying where we were from, one kid said "im from the region" and half of the class burst out laughing, and half was going "what?" so yeah....its still around. whooo. go hoosiers! lol

erniegurl00, my ex-bf goes to butler. he's on the swim team. i was there fall of 2000 and really liked the campus. both his older sisters went there and were theta's. it's a small world!

Not in Indianapolis, but...
 

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia's national headquarters, Lyrecrest, is in Indiana but not Indianapolis. It is in Evansville -- it wound up there because a long-time, part-time Executive Director was on the faculty (or administration) at University of Evansville and basically ran the Fraternity out of his office and his home. Then the chance to purchase the house and 13+ acres (which include a pond and an oil well :cool: ) which are now Lyrecrest came along. More adjacent land has since been purchased, and new buildings have been bought or built.

I know that a few years back, there was actually an organization of GLO's with HQ's in Indiana.

BTW, did any GLO's HQ, other than Phi Mu Alpha's, sustain any damage in the earthquake that hit Indiana a few months ago. We actually had some major damage -- the floor of the store room, where lots of merchandise waiting to be sold was kept, collapsed. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Alpha Gamma Delta's IHQ is also on Founders Road. Dont know the history of when and why though.

INDY
 

Actually, NPC and the NIC are both in Indy!

Also the Association of Fraternity Advisors [AFA] (the professional organization for Greek advisors) was in Indy. They just moved last week down the road to Carmel.

NPHC is headquartered in Indiana also at IU-Bloomington; as well as the Center for the Study of the American College Fraternity, and Lambda 10.

I think the main reason is definately the tax breaks, but also it is centrally located. Their is a large airport, and it's easy to get in and out of for Headquarter's Staff, Consultant's, etc.

Of course, I think there is plenty of things to keep you busy socially also.

It's no Chicago, but it is a fun city still the same!

Ive never done any research on why Kappa Alpha Theta is in Indy, I just always figured it was because we were founded in Indiana. How many other chapters Headquarters are in Indy were founded in Indiana?

I'm probably wrong, but isn't Alpha Chi the only other organization that was founded in Indiana that has its headquarters in Indiana as well?
