University of Georgia Recruitment
Anyone going through recruitment at UGA this Fall? I know they start today or tomorrow, and I want to hear the scoop :)
|
Not going through.. But I have tons of friends already in sororities and so they all asked me about girls going through recruitement this year. All my brother's friends that were girls are going through, but they will probably go where the rest of the atlanta girls from my school go. There are one or two were almost all the girls from my school go, I can't think of the name right now.
|
UGA has a fabulous Greek system. I have a few friends that were in different chapters at UGA. I'd also love to hear from anyone going through that recruitment process, I'm sure they'd have tons of great stories.
Go UGA! |
UGA Rush
I am anxiously awaiting the word about who got bids at UGA -- esp interested in one local girl I wrote a strong rec for -- really want her to be a Gamma Phi! OOOOH the waiting is killing me!;)
|
*bump*
I know someone last year helped their chapter as an alum with recruitment, so someone's got to know something on UGA by now :) |
I may be the person you're talking about, shadokat! :) I was in Athens all weekend, which is why I haven't responded to the thread until now.
Rush this year was AWESOME! I was so proud of the Delta Zeta girls. They worked sooooo hard! Bid Day is today, so I'm not mentioning anything about the Rush results until tomorrow. ;) The only thing I'll say is that we had a total of 1220 women who signed up for Rush this year, and that I personally saw MANY great women over the past few days. Every chapter on campus should be thrilled with the quality of the women that they are picking up today. :D Congratulations to all of UGA's sororities, and especially to the Delta Zeta girls!!!!!!!! |
I am sooooooo happy! I learned this afternoon that the girl from my town who I wrote such a strong rec on has pledged Gamma Phi Beta and I am thrilled!
BTW, I heard that only 8 of the 18 houses made quota at UGA, one being Gamma Phi Beta, so the rest were doing snap bids this afternoon I gather.... |
Do you know which houses made quota? (I'm just curious!)
Jess |
No I don't know -- sorry-- but it just so happens that the person who told me about my special girl pledging Gamma Phi did mention PiPhis (because another girl from our town pledged PiPhi) and she said they (PiPhi) did not make quota...:( sorry
|
awww...oh well! At least we probably got some quality girls at the UGA chapter! :D Congrats on GPhiB making quota though!
Jess |
Thx...the girl from our town who pledged PiPhi is wonderful and Gamma Phi should have given her a bid, IMHO! PiPhi is very lucky to have her:)
|
hey yall did anyone hear anything about adpi? i know of a legacy that was going through and her mom was a little worried... she said the number of legacies that go through and the way they all have to cut is crazy..... her daughter is amazing though and her mom is pretty up there with nationals soooo.... hopefully her daughter wanted adpi and they wanted her.... i really need to email her.... but if anyone knows anything about the chapter i'd love to hear! thanks :)

I may be wrong, but I thought most UGA chapters made quota pretty consistently? Did something just go terribly wrong this year or a lot of PNMs drop out of recruitment there, or is 8/18 making quota normal for Georgia? Christin |
I am terribly afraid something went wrong because UGa had huge numbers going through and yet I kept hearing little shreds of information about local girls getting cut heavily, including by their legacy orgs. Maybe the rush release formula was wrong?
Anyway, I want to find out something soon! |
I did hear that some sororities cut many legacies -- too many to consider, I guess (go figure) -- plus I hear that sophomores were cut just because they were sophmores...
|
What was quota?
|
59
|
hmmm
That's so wierd!! I know UGA usually has more chapters making quota than that. Our chapter consultants were just at UGA I believe, so I'll have ask them what they think happened! Anyone have an idea?
Tara I have a Phi Mu castle... |
AGD GOT 42!
Several more are considering COB-ing!! YEA!!:D
|
AOII got Quota!
|
 OMG. I just got a phone call from several local girls who are at UGA. Apparently, release figures were horribly screwed up and the cuts were major and severe early on. Every legacy they know got cut by her legacy group after second parties. They told me that 2000+ girls went through rush and about 900 pledged. What a major screw-up!!! How devastating to those girls!
Of the locals I know who rushed, there are now 2 Gamma Phis, 2 Alpha Gams, an Alpha Chi, a DZ, an ADPi, and a Theta. One of them was a National Merit Scholar, Most Likely to Succeed, salutatorian, drop-dead gorgeous, 80 billion other activities, the student of all teacher's dreams, and she got axed by multiple groups. What are the sororities looking for? I am so pissed off!   |
AAAARGHHHH!!!! Did they hire the old Greek Life advisor from Georgia Southern???
This happened every rush until they finally fired the old guy. It happened the first rush the new lady (Greek Advisor now) was there, but most of the sororities have been making quota ever since. My last rush at GSU was her first. We hosted 3 pref parties (there were like 90 girls preffing us, usual was 2 parties) and got like 8 girls with a quota of 33 (not even possible according to the Greek Advisor afterwards - but we were stuck with it). |
I wish someone from UGA would post here and give an insider's take on what happened. From the outside looking in, all I can say is -- WHAT???!!!!!
How does this happen? Can anyone explain how release figures can be so screwed up? Aside from that, what explains awesome, intelligent, well-rounded women being severely cut? I really don't understand. Is it likely that groups will add new members to the point of quota through snap/cob? It would be so terrible for young women to miss out on being greek because of some weird error in recruitment. |
How absolutely bizarre. What a lousy way to start the school year. Maybe at least some of those girls will find a home through C.O.B.
|
Sometimes I wonder if the computer system screws a lot of people!!
I feel really bad for all those girls! |
If it's not working, shouldn't someone doing the numbers notice after the FIRST round of cuts? Do they really have to wait until all those girls are devastated (and the sororities are hurting) to figure it out?
Hopefully they will be able to make it up in COB. |
Carnation - I think that your information is incorrect about the numbers going through recruitment at UGA. My daughter is in a sorority there and she said that between 1200 and 1300 girls actually went through. I don't know how many girls pledged but I do know that the larger houses were required to cut more severely to try to even up the numbers. Again, I don't know the specifics but I am sure that many, many wonderful girls were released early during the week. Hopefully, these girls will be picked up during COB.
|
Seems to be alot of this going around!!!...
The same thing with the screwed up numbers happened at VSU. The quota was set at the begining of the week and never adjusted since that and it turned out there were only enough girls to have 5 out of 6 groups reach quota!!! Needless to say rush didnt work out well this year!!! |
Rush at UGA has always been brutal; this year it just seems heinous. I must say that it doesn't surprise me, though, to hear all of these stories of woe. Maybe it's just happening on a larger scale, so people are actually sitting up and taking notice. So many wonderful girls (like myself :D) rush at Georgia and end up getting cut heavily for, what seems like, no reason.
Just my two cents... ~ Annie :) |
UGA Recruitment
I am not an "insider" at Georgia, but a friend is. She tells me that, indeed, the larger houses were required to cut heavily. I know that the house in which my friend is an advisor was required to cut 1/2 of the total rushees the first night. In the end, the larger houses were all vying for the same 150 or so girls. Her house got quota, but many were not so lucky. Many of the prospective new members who were cut from the larger houses may not have been interested in others and may not have continued with recruitment. You can make the argument that they should have had an open mind, I guess, but somehow this whole process does not seem very fair to anyone at Georgia.
|
OK now I know how our old Panhel advisor spent her summer  jess & ali - you know what I mean! ;)
So let me get this straight - there are anywhere from 300 to 1100 girls that didn't get bids, and 10 chapters walking around without quota? What do we need to do, call Chuck Woolery and have him make a sorority love connection? :p |
I have to say that the thought of all these amazing, motivated women being so severely cut is making me heartsick.
I wish a UGA active could post the insider details for us, I'd like to know exactly what went wrong. The only positive thing you can do with a situation like this is educate other campuses and hope that you can prevent other women from going through this kind of brutal recruitment experience. |

anothermom--I sincerely hope that I am wrong about that because the thought of over half the rushees going unbid makes me physically sick!!!! The numbers came from new members. Y'all, dzrose helped out at UGa rush and ought to be back on here any day to give us some details. Another thing I was told was that originally, only 5 groups made quota and 3 more immediately snapped up to quota. I'm wondering how many more have made it to quota now because 2 of the very strongest groups did not make quota, 2 that are very desirable in this town. One observation that several rushees made was that many of them were cut almost immediately by the groups they had recs to and not the others! Also, I saw a card that one prominent sorority sent to an alum who had made a rec. This was before rush, okay? But the card thanked the alum for the rec and said that the girl *was* shown every courtesy! I know that the big groups were probably required by Panhel to cut huge amounts of girls early. I know why--to prevent the problems we had at the SEC schools where I attended and/or advised in which the big groups hung on to girls they knew they didn't want to pledge for several days and then cut them when they'd dropped the smaller groups. Of course, this left the rushees with nowhere to go. However, I learned last week just how demoralizing it is to a girl to be cut early on by huge numbers of sororities. Also, in the South (and no doubt some other areas), many women have their sights set on a particular group of sororities and if they're released early by those groups, they won't look at any others. Finis. End of rush. |
This is all so sad! I hope something happens that all parties will be happy. Are other regional rushes as brutal as the South? I'm from the South, but attend a school outside of the region--where Recruitment (ahem) is really lax.

Insiders's perspective...
Hey y'all,
Sorry that I haven't been online to give y'all details this week. I just got back from DZ's pledging in ceremony, and this is really the first time that I've had a chance to sit at the computer for more than 15 minutes at a time. :) I'm very pleased to announce that Delta Zeta made quota, which was set at 59. Only 8 of the 18 sororities on campus made quota this year. The ones that I know of are Delta Zeta, ADPi, Phi Mu, A Chi O, AOPi and Theta. I was told by the girls tonight that Pi Phi, DG, Tri Delt, KD, KKG, AGD and D Phi E did not make quota. The other sororities I'm not sure about... Some of those that didn't make quota came as a big shock to a lot of people because they are considered "top" houses on UGA's campus. I believe that some of the reasons behind the high number of chapters not making quota this year are the following: 1) Panhellenic switched the order of parties this year, which made House Tours the 2nd round and Skit Day the 3rd round. So, if a chapter's house wasn't extremely impressive, then that may have made a difference. (I know that sounds extremely shallow, but after 2 rounds of Rush, the rushees have to cut a total of 12 houses and they don't have much to go on other than superficial reasons at that point.) 2) Panhellenic made mandatory cuts before 3rd round much more drastic this year than in years past. Their reasoning was that, with 1220 girls going through this year, it would be wrong for houses to be able to invite back a ton of girls to 3rd round all the while knowing that they wouldn't be able to offer bids to the majority of them. 3) MANY girls dropped out of Rush after 3rd Round -- a much higher number than usual. I believe that this is largely related to the severe cuts mandated by Panhellenic -- a lot of quality girls were knocked out of the running by some of the higher tier houses that they were counting on, so they dropped out of Rush instead of going to Pref parties at houses that they weren't interested in. 4) I believe that quota was set a little high. It was 50 last year, and the difference between the number of rushees last year and the number of rushees this year simply wasn't large enough to merit such an increase in quota. This, however, is my own personal opinion. At any rate, I believe that all of the houses did a great job with Rush this year and that they should all be proud of their hard work -- regardless of whether or not they made quota!! :) |
Gamma Phi Beta made quota!
I have heard from several reliable sources that being anything but a freshman going thru Rush at UGA is 9 times out of 10 the kiss of death ...that is just plain wrong & should be changed! |
release figures?

I guess carrying over some girls can be a defence mechinism??? You dont want to cut your throat I guess. There are alot of girls I would see that you liked but they could have been better....I personally looked at keeping them as another chance to get to know them and dropped tomorrow if you dont. I mean how much do you really know a girl after seeing hundreds for 30 mins at a time????
|
Any news on how SK did?
|
WOW! ....and I thought LSU was brutal!
