Longest/shortest formal rush period?

Who has the longest formal rush/recruitment period? Likewise who has the shortest? I am sometimes amazed at how some big greek schools get it all done in just 4 or 5 days!

Ginger 08-14-2002 04:30 PM

We have our rush seperate from the NPC sororities on our campus  so our rush usually lasts only 2 or 3 days. But we usually have a small amount of girls coming through, so its easier to get to know everyone very quickly

KappaKittyCat 08-14-2002 04:50 PM

Ours is 3 rounds, but it's spread out over a whole week. I'd prefer it if it were clumped together more, but that's just me.

shadokat 08-14-2002 04:55 PM

My school has formal recruitment for 7 days, while another campus I know does the same stuff in 4. The difference in time stems from the large # of sororities on my campus (9), as compared to theirs (4).

valkyrie 08-14-2002 04:59 PM

What about that crazy rush at Indiana University where they have like one round of parties in the fall but then don't even find out where they were invited back until like January? I can't imagine that there's anything longer than that -- nor can I imagine how the PNMs deal with that much waiting!

aephi alum 08-14-2002 05:01 PM

When I was in school, our formal recruitment period ran for 5 days including bid day. The school is going to deferred recruitment - looks like it will be 6 days including bid day, but it will be spread out over two weekends, and the first day is just an info session. We have 5 sororities.

Harmony 08-14-2002 05:03 PM

At Penn State this year, formal rush (including rush parties, pref night, and bid day) will be held for 11 days spread over the course of a little over 2 weeks. That doesn't include orientation or anything like that.

S_A_I 08-14-2002 06:06 PM

At ETSU, our formal rush is 6 days, spread out over approximately 1 1/2 weeks. This includes the orientation which is 1 week before recruitment begins. The madness starts on September 3 - I'm so excited! - with open house and bid day is on Sunday, the 8th. There are four nationals and 1 local:

Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Xi Delta
Kappa Delta
Sigma Kappa

and the local:

Phi Sigma Beta

I'm sooo exited! :D

UF56 - wow - you are seriously expected to make your first cuts based on 20 minutes of conversation???

chloe173 08-14-2002 06:55 PM

USC

At USC (Southern Cal, not Carolina) rush this year is 6 days long including bid day. There is also a madatory meeting before formal recruitment starts though. The schedule is like this:
August 25th-Mandatory Recruitment Meeting
August 29th-Meet Rho Chi, rush group, half of round 1 parties
August 30th-Other half of round 1 parties
(there are 9 parties in round 1)
August 31st-Round 2, 6 parties
September 1st- Round 3, 4 parties
September 2nd-Preference Night, 2 parties
September 3rd-Bid Day!

And if you do the math, that means I start rush in exactly two weeks! I'll keep everyone posted!

HeavenslilAngel 08-14-2002 06:59 PM

When I went through "COB" if thats even what it was. It was only like an hour or 2 one night. The reason I have COB in quotes is because when I went though my local had just started like 2 months before and the only members were the 9 founders 5 of which have dropped or graduated (the one that graduated is one of our advisors) and 2 come around when its convenient for them and one is our current chapter president. But anyway there were only 3 of us at that informational meeting and I got my bid the next night. Generally our COB's were 2-3 days. This will be our 1st year participating in formal recruitment. I'm so excited.

UF56 08-14-2002 07:10 PM

AephiAlum-

I never thought about it like that but you are right WOW!!! But from what I have read from last years GCers it's more like be happy that you get invited back because UF does heavy cuts. But who knows if it is like that for everyone. I know I will have a disadvantage b/c I am not a freshman but this year there is only 1084 girls rushing where from what I have gathered there was somewhere close to 1300 rushing last year. Hopefully the fact that almost 200 less girls will help!!!! But good luck to everyone especially my fellow GATORS!!! We only have three more days!!

hopefulgreek 08-14-2002 07:57 PM

ak~

I hope just like you UF56 that I won't get cut terribly after the first round!! I mean in 20 minutes what can you guess about me? AK! That's nerve-racking!

bcdphie 08-15-2002 12:16 AM

UBC's is 5 days over a week and a half.

IBRSki 08-15-2002 08:07 AM

At my school our "formal" rush is pretty much what every other school would call informal rush. We don't do any COBing either, so rush is a little over 2 weeks long to make sure everyone has plenty of time to make up their minds. The first week is open parties each day for all the sororites and fraternities, so pnms can go to any house they wish any day of the week. The second week groups have invite only parties, ending friday with what we call "final signs". final signs is invite only and the pnms who attend those parties sign an agreement to pledge that glo, if given a bid. The fraternities/sororities then conduct what we call "interviews" with each pnm that final signed, and then either friday or over the weekend in some cases, the glo's go around and give out bids after voting as a chapter on new members. It's different, I know, but our greek system is made up of mainly locals. This year is my local's first year participating in the organized rush system so we'll see how we do!

Sorry this got so long! I'm new here and so excited for rush!

Iota Sigma ZTA 08-15-2002 08:41 AM

how long is rush

My school has a small Greek population  and there are only five chapters on campus. ZTA, Pi Phi, AZD, Alpha Phi, and Delta Zeta. Since I am VP of Recrutiment for ODU I thought 4 days would be best for us. Last spring it was 2 weeks and that was WAY to long because we all got stressed out:mad: This year will be better and I am so excited about the women comming through :)

DWAlphaGam 08-15-2002 10:40 AM

My school used to do formal recruitment over 2 weekends (Friday=slideshow [last year it was skit], Saturday=philanthropy, Friday=skit [last year slideshow], Saturday=preference, Sunday=Bid Day).

This year, they're trying to do it in one week in the evenings, Wednesday-Saturday with Bid Day on Sunday. It's the first week of classes, August 28th-September 1st. It's going to be crazy, but I think less women will drop out because there is no week in between for them to reconsider. We won't know how many women sign up until the day recruitment begins.

There are 6 sororities, so the schedule is usually 6 parties the first day, 5 the second day, 3 the third day, and 2 on preference. I'm not entirely sure if they're sticking with this plan this year.

UF56 08-15-2002 10:51 AM

Well the number has gone up to 1136 girls are rushing. I think that is the final count since rush starts in only two days!!!

I cannot imagine going through this!! Why do they do it this way?

AXWhoah 08-15-2002 02:21 PM

Arizona's rush is as follows. Wednesday the 21 (of August) is an informational meeting and the girls are dividing into their recruitment groups with their recruitment counselers. Thursday is the first half of Set 1, the girls will go to 6 house for something like 20 minutes each this day. Friday is a continuation of Set 1 and they go to the other 6 houses. Set 2 is philanthropy day and a saturday and the PNMs go to 8 houses which they spend a little more time at than they had in Set 1 (this is a LONG day). Sunday is Set 3 which is Theme/Skit day and the PNMs go to 5 houses for like 45 minutes I think. Monday is Pref Night and also the first day of school so it's super stressful as well. The girls can pref up to 3 chapters. Then Tuesday is bid day. So the whole process is 6 days long....Whew!

FuzzieAlum 08-15-2002 03:21 PM

How about this - U of the South (aka Sewanee). I very nearly went there. I don't know how they survive it.

In the fall, each sorority can have two introductory events and each fraternity one. They have to schedule them very publicly and no two groups can have them at the same time. Basically, all freshmen are STRONGLY encouraged to go to these.

Then come January they do what is basically two rounds of parties ... I'm gonna quote from their web site:

"Formal House Visits: Formal house visits will take place on the first Sunday and Monday after classes begin. The schedule and length of these visits will be determined by the IFC and ISC and will be made to conform to the interests and programs of the various organizations. Following a manner and schedule prescribed by the IFC/ISC the rushees will move in groups from one social organization to another.

Return House Visits: The maximum duration of a return house visit will be forty-five (45) minutes. Rushees will call upon the organizations of their choice during this time. Those who wish to pledge sororities must visit at least three organizations and men are encouraged to return to as many fraternities as possible. Traditionally, students are not generally considered for bidding by an organization unless they have indicated an interest by making a call during the period of return house visits."

KD is colonizing there this year, which will give Sewanne their first national sorority. I'm curious if a second one colonizes, will they be required by Panhellenic rules to change their rush format?

violets 08-15-2002 04:26 PM

FuzzieAlum,
I didn't know that KD was colonizing there...good for them and good for Sewanee!
I'm not sure what kind of impact that will have on Greek life there. Sewanee is a school especially rich in tradition, I wonder how comfortable Greeks will be with the changes that may take place. It'd be great if we had a Sewanee GCer.
