Boston?

Hey, I just moved to Boston and I was wondering if there were any GCers out here. I was very pleased to be driving in along Mass Ave. and see huge letters from some of the MIT houses. Let me know if you're out there.

aephi alum 08-13-2002 10:55 AM

I used to live in Boston, does that count? :)

Just wondering which MIT fraternity houses you saw, since most of them aren't on Mass Ave. There are some on Beacon St., visible from the bridge...

SteveHofstetter 08-13-2002 11:05 AM

From what I recall, they were Zeta Psi and Alpha Delta Phi. They're about halfway between Kendall and Central Sq (closer to Central)

aephi alum 08-13-2002 11:26 AM

Yup, those are the two I was thinking of.

KSig RC 08-13-2002 11:57 AM

What's up Steve -

I'm a student at Boston University, a member of Kappa Sigma here. There are a couple others on here from Boston or the 'burbs (a couple from UMass, etc).

How's Boston treating you so far, man?

KSigkid 08-13-2002 02:30 PM

I'm in Boston too - in KSigRC's chapter of Kappa Sigma, going into my senior year at Boston University.

Collin

OnePlus69Is70 08-13-2002 07:16 PM

It's not MY fault UMass hockey insists on recruiting kids from MA.....I keep telling them, go for the Swedes and the Canadians, screw the native sons.

PotentialPledge 08-13-2002 08:02 PM

Hey, Welcome to Boston!

I was born and raised in a suburb south of Boston where I am living for the summer. I am doing an internship in Brookline - Coolidge Corner so I am driving through Boston everyday. I pass the Theta Chi and Sig Ep houses on Beacon St on my way to work and the Phi Sigma Kappa house on Comm Ave on my way home. Are these BU houses maybe?

Anyways, welcome to Boston. It's a great city.

Nope, those are MIT houses - BU sold most of them to MIT a couple of decades ago.

All of the BU houses are back in Brookline or Allston/Brighton, on the other end of campus (think Packard's Corner).

SteveHofstetter 08-14-2002 12:14 PM

Hey, thanks to all the folks who welcomed me to beantown. If anyone is up for something tomorrow night, I don't know many people here yet, and I think it might be nice to meet some other GCers. Maybe even get a few of the Boston GC crowd together.

nucutiepie 08-14-2002 12:29 PM

i grew up in a suburb just west of boston, where I am spending the rest of the summer

KSig RC 08-14-2002 01:06 PM

I'm in Iowa until sunday - after that I'm sure I'll be up for a cocktail or two though.

KappaTarzan 08-14-2002 03:51 PM

hell yea i'm down, we greeks have to stick together :)

SteveHofstetter 08-14-2002 03:56 PM

Sounds like a plan - can someone pick a time and a place? I'm going to fall back on my "I just got here" excuse for why I won't be the one to decide. :-)

KappaTarzan 08-14-2002 06:25 PM

i use the excuse that i live about 45 minutes north of boston, someone else choose! :)

PotentialPledge 08-14-2002 07:14 PM

Unfortunately Im in DC until the 30th. If you all are planning on doing anything in September Im game.

oops, my bad. I just assumed they were BU because they are so close to the BU campus. Why are alot of the houses in Boston so far away from their campus? Are they college owned or nationally owned?

Angels&Arrows 08-15-2002 01:06 AM

nucutiepie, I forgot you were from Newton, until I saw your post! How long are you home for? I am on vacation until the 26th.

SteveHofstetter... Welcome to Boston... I live in suburbia!!! Boston is a wonderful town.

haha, easy mistake to make . . .

Basically, it all boils down to the fact that the city situation is centuries older than greek housing. You take what you can get - that's why some MIT houses are closer to BU, some BU houses are closer to BC, and so on.

BU dumped the greek system a while back, then let them back on gradually (sans houses) - that's why some of the MIT houses are literally in the middle of BU. The houses were sold to MIT chapters at the time when BU wouldn't allow the houses on campus - there was a giant drug scandal at the time. MIT's LXA, Phi Delt, and Beta houses lie among BU residence halls for this very reason (and LXA was founded at BU . . . very stupid scenario IMO).

aephi alum 08-15-2002 09:38 AM

Some MIT fraternity houses are in Boston because MIT was originally located in Boston. Others are in Boston (like KSig RC said) because you take what you can get - housing is scarce in Boston and Cambridge. I know that AXO and Sigma Kappa spent years trying to find houses, and the houses they did find are in Boston... AEPi's house is practically in the middle of the BU campus.... and two houses are way out in Brookline.

At one point MIT built a dorm intended to be housing for several fraternities... but the plans changed, and it now contains the language houses.

SteveHofstetter 08-15-2002 09:41 AM

Is there anyone besides KappaTarzan and I that'd be up for a small post-work get together tonight? Rather, is there anyone who is up for it that knows Boston well enough to suggest a place?
