Game Shows
What were/are your favorite Game Shows?
I recall two on MTV I liked called Idiot Savants and Remote Control. And I like Jeopardy because they actually ask tough questions unlike Millionaire. Anyone remember Name That Tune? That show was ok. I just remember when they'd duel it out. The first would be like "I can name that tune in 9 notes" Really? Ya think? Then you get some punk who busted out "I can name the tune in 1 note." So the host asks him: "What is this tune about a girl and a farm animal?" "Plunk" "Mary Had a Little Lamb!" "CORRECT!" Press Your Luck was the funniest. NO WHammy No Whammy No Whammy Stop! Im sure they didnt HAVE to put both hands on the buzzer but you know the producers made them just to make them look like tools. Family Feud actually kinda sucked. Not only did Richard Dawson tongue the fat inbred sister at the end of the line, but his successor was hanging from the pro-verbial shower rod. And the host now I swear is slowly eating himself to death. I love The Price Is Right (Hosted By Sigma Nu's own Bob Barker). Plinko is still cool and so is that game where that little dude is climbing that mountain with the ruler on top. Plus, the beauties ;) |
My favorite game shows, past and present:
Wheel of Fortune Double Dare Family Feud Don't Press Your Luck |
just thought of some more
Tic Tac Toe or Dough
Also does anyone remember the game show on NBC on Saturday mornings that featured brothers and sisters. The bonus round was running around picking up stuff that your brother or sister would want. I cannot remember the name to save my life but I just thought of it while I was looknig for a Classic Nick website. |
The Price is Right -- by far.
Barker's a Sigma Nu:D |
I still like Jeopardy.:D
|
Jeopardy and The Price is Right both rock my world! :)

jeopardy
rock & roll jeopardy remote control lingo classic concentration my new favorite channel is the game show network...i'm always watching the old school retro gameshows..a few weeks ago i saw an episode of hollywood squares w/robert blake as the top left square..highly amusing |
price is right - i grew up watching that religiously.
there was a show on MTV called Lip Service... a lip sync show hosted by the same guy that did Singled Out. I watched that all the time too. |
When I was in junior high, I remember racing home from school to see Press Your Luck and right after that Scrabble. I loved them! My other favorites include Supermarket Sweep, Shop Til You Drop, Fun House, and the $25,000 Pyramid.
|
Press Your Luck is the finest game show ever to grace tv. I loved the Whammy that did the moonwalk across the screen.
To whoever asked about the brother/sisiter show w/the dorky host, it was called I'm Telling. Please don't ask me why I remember that. :) 18 days, 5 hrs, 43 minutes left until Cancun. :D  :D  :D  |
Singled Out (oh, I know, that's flaky)
|
Classic Concentration and Sale of the Century

I love Jeopardy. Always wanted to be on it. Especially in HS - those teen tournament questions are ridiculously easy.
I have serious serious serious issues with Wheel of Fortune. It just seems *wrong* that people can make so much cash/prizes for merely knowing the frickin' alphabet. Its a sparkly version of Hangman, people. It bugs me that very smart people come away from Jeopardy with a box of Rice-A-Roni for being #2 - and people who know *all* 26 letters of the alphabet (and can keep track of which ones have been used) can win 25K and a car, ec. I watch Game Show Network way too much... Lingo Cram Press Your Luck (no Whammy , STOP) I also loved MTV's Idiot Savants There was a show called Debt that used to be on Lifetime (I think) If you won, you got your debt paid off. The people had a "specialty" category, and the producers picked a supposedly hard question in that area - if you got it right, you were debt free. I *always* knew the Brady Bunch and Simpsons questions. I was watching a rerun of Greed tonight on GSN - and Paul, the TV Geek from Beat the Geeks was on as a contestant...wierd. I liked the first season of Beat the Geeks - but the second host sucked. |
I love mindless trivia shows such as Win Ben Stein's Money and Win Tuition and all those other shows like Millionare. I like to feel that I am smart when I know the answers to the questions. :p
I am also in love with the GameShow Network. Lingo is an awesome game and I love to watch the reruns of older shows and make fun of the hairstyles and clothing! Rock and Roll Jeopardy is awesome also! What can I say, I am a game show freak! |
All time fave has to be The Price is Right, but I always loved those crazy Nickelodeon ones like Double Dare, and the oh-so-cheesy SuperMarket Sweep (which my mom and I are convinced we could win!). Jeopardy is so entertaining because Alex Trebeck is a pompous idiot who thinks he knows it all, with a ton of great fake accents. I laugh when watching it because I can't help thinking about the hilarious SNL skits with Sean Connery.
When you think about it though, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Scrabble, Classic Concentration...these are all great educational games. They help kids learn trivia, words, memorization - heck, even the Price is Right helps with estimating! Game shows are great educational tools, I think that watching them should become standard in elementary school curriculum. |

My other favorites: Price is Right ( a classic) Family Feud Supermarket sweep |

For those students of 'ancient' history (well before we were even thought of :) ), don't forget the little town of Hot Springs, New Mexico, which voted to rename itself 'Truth or Consequences' after the 50's game show. Locals today generally call the town 'T or C'.

Cross-Wits Any Jeopardy! that Art Fleming hosted Press Your Luck/Whammy! Whew! High Rollers Card Sharks The Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour (yes, this was a real show) Double Dare '76 (hosted by Alex Trebek) |

Oh, the opening to Double Dare was really cool, it went with the theme song quite well.... TAKE A RISK! TAKE A CHANCE! TAKE A DARE! PLAY THE GAME OF DOUBLE DARE! WITH THE HOST OF DOUBLE DARE, ALEX TREBEK!! I have a copy of the first and last episode. |
Ok, I am so glad I am not the only one who LOVES Press Your Luck! I love the Boy George Whammy that sings, "Do you really want to hurt me... Do you really want to make me cry... " complete with weird hair.
It's infilitrated my family's lingo, too. Whenever we're picking things, someone will say "Big buck, No Whammies, STOP!" We're kind of odd folks, though. We love game shows. Juniorgrrl, I always wanted to be on Teen Jeopardy, too. One of the guys I went to school with qualified to go on the show, but never got on. He thought he was so smart because he studied this little book, but one day I challenged him and won. It was actually really funny to see me as a sophomore out-trivia the number 5 student in the senior class. |
To all you Press Your Luck fans....
....that have the Game Show Network
On Sunday, March 16, there will be a special documentary/PYL rerun of the infamous Michael Larson "scandal". An unemployed ice cream truck driver from Lebanon, Ohio memorized the PYL pattern, got on the show, and broke the bank ($110,237) by taking 45 consecutive spins w/o a Whammy. This ep has not aired since the original June 1984 CBS airing. Tune your VCRs if you want to catch this!! |
A few weeks ago I wasn't home and my husband let my 5 and 7 year olds watch Matchgame '76 on the Gameshow Network. Apparently one of the panelists referred to a woman's breasts as "knockers" and now I have these little girls running around my house saying things like, "Mommy, when will I get my own knockers"?
I think he does these things so I don't make him babysit very often  Oh, and here is a piece of useless gameshow trivia: Pat Sajak lives near me and I just saw him yesterday at Mailboxes Etc. buying postage stamps. TOLD you it was useless! |
I just saw the new Let's Make a Deal the other night on TV. It so wasn't even anywhere near as cool as the original. I don't know, it just wasn't fun to watch.
I am not really into game shows, but my dad is hugely into Wheel of Fortune. When I was really young, my sister, dad, and I would all watch The Price is Right every day. :) |
Price is Right is the best game show ever, hands down.
Senior year of college, a bunch of my sisters became obsessed with Game Show Network because we got it that year. We watched Match Game, Family Feud with Richard Dawson and the Newlywed Game every night. They should put reruns of Double Dare on the Game Show Network. That show was awesome, too. I always wanted to run through the obstacle course. Press Your Luck is another favorite. I despise the new Whammy! show, though. They should have stuck to the original format...WTF is up with the "double Whammy" BS? It sucks. |
Jeopardy, hands down.
I also enjoy Win Ben Stein's Money. |

Awesome!! I've been wanting to see this! I heard that they were going to make a movie about this with Dan Akroyd... Yes, but Bill Murray was actually scheduled to play Larson. The project is currently shelved/on hiatus until further notice. Anyone remember the guy who screamed "BIG BUCKS AND NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHAM-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" It was really long and drawn out - so hard to forget. That contestant was named Steve Bryant. Other notable PYL alums included... Karen Martin Jim "Cuss Mouth" Hess Beverlie Peters Lela ??? (was quite the energy ball and reminded me of Speedy Gonzales with her accent) Lana Jones The new Whammy sucks so much it's not even funny. The new season begins Monday, March 17, and some changes will be in place. They should increase the "+One Spin" spaces, more cash spaces, and less Double Whammy spaces. They did get rid of that hard as heck to win Gem Car space. Maybe Its just me, but I don't get the Match Game. Simply put, the premise is "Fill in the punchline to your favorite joke" Match Game in and of itself is more of a comedy show with a game element than the other way around |
I found an online video clip of Double Dare '76

Love some TPIR.
Sick at home, watching TPIR, i am 8 all over again. hells yeah. Also as ZNTkE said, Cale of the Century rocked.. withthe lovely summer bartholmew. ha. my first crush. The best were the celebrity "money cards" lol. Mathc game rocks. Seriously, Fanny, I know "Whistle Stop Cafe" was a good book (the basis for Fried Green Tomatos) but what else have you done, besides that...and for 7 years? Soem of those contestants were dumb as rocks. Was Richard Dawson clarivoyant? he was way too good at that shit. While on his own show, he was so a sexual predator. WHO KISSES COMPLETE STRANGERS ON THE LIPS? Yeah, sign me up for a little oral herpes or Hepatitis C please. |
Hey, did you guys hear that the Chief from "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" died? It's so sad! That show was really cool, too.
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/14/ob...es/14THIG.html Lynne Thigpen, Actress in CBS's 'District,' Dies at 54 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS OS ANGELES, March 13 — Lynne Thigpen, a Tony Award-winning actress for "An American Daughter" and a star of "The District," a drama on CBS, died on Wednesday at her home here. She was 54. Ms. Thigpen had appeared to be in good health and the cause was not immediately known, a network spokeswoman, Beth Haiken, said. On Thursday production of "The District" was shut down. The show stars Craig T. Nelson as the police chief of Washington. Ms. Thigpen played his aide, Ella Farmer. The 20th episode was in production this week, Ms. Haiken said. Twenty-two were planned for the season, and no decision has been made about how the death will affect the show. Ms. Thigpen grew up in Joliet, Ill., and lived primarily in New York. She had a distinguished stage career and also worked steadily in films and television. In 1997 she received a Tony for featured actress in a play for her role as a black Jewish feminist in Wendy Wasserstein's "American Daughter." Ms. Thigpen recreated the role in the 2000 television movie made of that play. She was nominated for a Tony for her role in "Tintypes" and won Obie Awards for her Off Broadway roles in "Jar the Floor" and "Boesman and Lena" and an Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for her work in a production in that city of August Wilson's "Fences." On television she portrayed the Chief in the PBS series "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?" and "Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego?" She appeared in the series "Thirtysomething" and "L.A. Law" and the Hallmark Hall of Fame presentations of "Night Ride Home" and "The Boys Next Door." Her film credits included "The Insider," "Shaft," "Random Hearts," "Lean on Me," "Bob Roberts," "Tootsie" and most recently "Anger Management." |
I can't believe I didn't see this thread until now. I love gameshows...and many times the GSN is my default network when I'm really bored :)
I love Jeopardy...wanted to try out for College Jeopardy but never got around to it. On the GSN.... I love watching reruns of $25000 Pyramid, Match Game, Press Your Luck (the ORIGINAL), Family Feud (with Richard Dawson), and the Newlywed Game (the old ones)...one of my college roommates and I would always watch that late at night before going to bed. I also like watching Cram and Lingo. As a kid I liked Price is Right but it's annoying to me now. I also always wanted to be on Double Dare...lol. I'm such a dork! |
semi-brush with fame - game show contestants
Anyone on GC ever actually been on a Game Show?
Or know someone who was? A sorority sister of mine was on Price Is Right back in 2000 and won the showcase showdown -- she got a truck, washer/dryer, and a few other things from the showdown and the qualfifying round. |
The Price is Right (Once Bob retires, the show needs to do for the respect of the show)
GUTS (My favorite Nick show of all time. I'm a HUGE fan of Moira Quirk.) Card Sharks 1978-81 (Jim Perry) Legends of the Hidden Temple(2nd favorite Nick Show) Bumper Stumpers (Canadian game show that was on American television years ago) Press Your Luck (not Whammy!) Double Dare (when Marc Summers was on, not the repulsive Double Dare 2000 revival) Blockbusters (Bill Cullen's version) Match Game (Gene Rayburn's version) Okay, I'm a old school game shows fanatic. Normally, people my age don't like those types because they're boring. But I was born in 1982 so I grew up with game shows juggenaut in the 1980s. |
