To all who are from USC or the UC System Please r/o!

Hi! I was hoping someone could help me w/this! I am planning to go to one of the schools in the UC system or USC. Is anyone here from one of those schools? If so, I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me regarding Greek Life!! How "important" is Greek Life at your campus, and how "Cutthroat" is Rush? Also, do I need recs, a resume, etc. etc..? Any tips on dress, as I know rush in the West is different than rush in the South (I have read southern_theta's rush tips).

I would love it if you could give me info about Greek life at your school...and actually, any tips in general for success (academic, social, etc...) at your school! THanks so much!

Newbie,

I went to USC. Email me w specific questions and I'll be happy to answer them...

In general, greek life is big and rush is competitive. Not like in the South, but for the West Coast, yes. Recs are not necessary but cannot hurt. Resumes, check with the panhellenic office at SC. I don't remember ever seeing any used--but Rush applications were widely circulated.

Like I said, email me. I am happy to help. It can be overwhelming going in with such a big greek system (I believe there are currently 12 sororities) but rush/recruitment can also be exciting and fun.

It is certainly possible to have a great experience at USC or, for that matter, UCLA without being in the Greek system. It all depends on where you find yourself gravitating. I had friends in the film school who did not go greek and didn't even notice. Others in other disciplines didn't have that kind of community to be a part of. For me, the greeks were so visible and so everywhere, I just knew I had to be one and I've never regretted it!

As far as UC's go, Amy's advice would probably hold true for UCLA.

But all the other UCs vary so much in terms of Greek life it's like night and day. Part of it really depends on how "social" the campus is overall. For instance, SB has a great greek system. But the whole campus is known for being "fun". I went to SD. Tiny greek life. But SD is all about studying. Were pretty much known for being an antisocial campus. The student activities office actually had to have a seminar on how to meet people! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif And I mean like how to just break the ice w/ a new friend, not how to hook up! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif The dedicated an entire day to getting the campus to just say hi to one another. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif How sad!

I go to ucd, and our grek community is completely different from other greek communities, even UCB which is so close.
The greek system at UCD is very small, only about 10%, but I enjoyed being a part of it.
I came to school without knowing anyone, and formal recruitment, and joining a house helped me meet so many great people. I definatly recommend it.

PS: let us know where you decide to go http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

CAgal 03-29-2001 03:48 PM

persephone631,
I'm seriously considering transferring to UCD from a community college this fall. I was wondering how the greek system is there and how it is for transfer rushees. UCD is my first or second choice so I would really like to know if it is hard for transfer rushees or even if it matters at all. I know 1/3 of the incoming new students to UCD are transfers (I went to the UCD recuitment for accepted students), so do you get a lot of transfer rushees? Hope you can answer my questions. Thanks a bunch..

persephone631 03-29-2001 11:53 PM

Half of the girls that go through recruitment are tranfers and it is no problem joining a sorority. I would recommend going through formal rush in september/October to get a look at all of the sororities on campus. their are eight panhellenic soroities. Recommondation letters help, but they arent required. Feel free to email me if you have any more questions, Id love to answer whatever I can. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

How sad! What year did you graduate? I am a greek here at UCSD and I absolutely love it. The greek system here is growing seemingly exponentially each rush. My chapter was capped in fall rush! Before I came to college, I also expected to go greek and believed since I was born that I would go to USC like my parents did. But I came here and could not be happier. Rush is formal here...a very tiring but well worth it week. And while this campus does remain a very academic campus, our greek system is amazing. Our girls always joke about how it's nice to be here because you are guaranteed that all the hot surfer fraternity boys are intelligent if they are here! Our campus is beautiful, the teachers are amazing, and the beach is always open for random exchanges. The top houses are competitive like all other campuses. But we all have lives outside of the greek system. I have just returned from an event that included greeks from all over California and I was impressed with our girls for having so much class. And our guys for having fun but not being blatantly obnoxious idiots like at other "party" schools. Remember that you are at a university for 4 years...ask yourself what you want out of a sorority...if you can handle four years of the row, every weekend. Here our social life is diverse...a day at the beach, shopping downtown, bars in Pacific Beach, exchanges at rented out restaurants and bars, fraternity formals in Rosarito, and those infamous fraternity trips to TJ! Feel free to ask any questions about UCSD or our greek system! I am ecstatic to answer them! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

is it true that fraternities at UCSD do not have houses because the campus is in La Jolla?

newbie 04-29-2001 09:53 PM

Hi Pbpck! Thanks for responding http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. I would love to go to UCSD...but unfortunately, I really don't think I will make it...unless I transfer there jr. year! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif I messed up sophomore year grades-wise pretty badly. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

But you are very lucky to be attending UCSD!!! I heard the campus, and the surrounding area (La Jolla) is awesome!! Plus, I think how it is so interesting that you guys have 5 separate colleges (or is it four?), for studying what interests you!

SoCalGirl 04-29-2001 10:07 PM

pbpck---I graduated Spring 00! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif When did you rush? Have you or your chapter interacted much w/ your chapter at State? That Greek system puts ours to SHAME!!!

Newbie---It's five colleges (Revelle being the best!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif ) The sixth one is being built now though.

newbie 04-29-2001 10:10 PM

Hey SoCalGirl! What is Revelle about? (Like, is it more about Science, or is it more of a Social Science, etc.)

Do you know which college I would belong to, if I wanted to major in Psychology and minor in Education?

SoCalGirl 04-29-2001 11:24 PM

Hey Newbie!

Revelle is more science focused. It has more premed students than anything else. But the beauty of the system is that you can go to any of the colleges and choose any of the majors! But I admit that most of the Psych majors I know tended to go to Marshall, Muir, and Roosevelt (in that order). http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah...it's true. Originally, we were suppose to have amazing housing on the cliffs overlooking the beach, but the city of La Jolla bought out UCSD for the property to build million dollar condos. But it makes greek life all that more diverse. We get really creative with social events. Besides, our girls all end up living together any way in beach houses and apartment complexes.

SoCal- I pledged just last fall and I love it! You should see Pikes here! The chapter boasts 120 or more brothers now! It's insane. Sigma Chi, SAE and Delta Sig are strong as always. Sigma Kappa has the most UCSD cheerleaders!

Newbie- Don't worry about it. If UCSD is right for you, you will get here eventually. The campus is amazing. It's huge. I walked around my first week here with a map...(can I just tatoo FROSH on my forehead?). It's one of the most beautiful campuses with the most amazing beach sunset views from the dorms. I slacked off as well in my latter days of high school, but I still left with a decent GPA due to AP's and got lucky (taking the SAT's only once) with my scores. But the wonderful thing is that UCSD looks at more than just grades. People here (especially greeks) are well balanced. Have you already applied to colleges? If you haven't...I would be happy to help you with the application process and increase your chances of getting here and increase my chances of seeing you in rush in the years to come! If you'de like..I can e-mail you about UCSD and the 5 campuses. They are all geared toward your major but also...I find that the most social population is at Muir. No offense SoCal! A few of my sisters are at Revelle and they are splendid people!

Oh yeah...actually, we just had our founders day with the Pi Phi's from State. A wonderful formal lunch with alumnae from over 41 chapters. We also plan in the future to throw socials and mixers with them. I know the fraternity guys do mixers with the SDSU sororities.

Newbie- I read somewhere you were Prom Queen? That's awesome! I was our senior Homecoming Queen! Ok... I'll stop posting now!

newbie 04-30-2001 06:38 PM

Hey SoCalGirl and Pbpck--you gals are awesome!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm trying to find my brochure about UCSD...I'll be right back http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif.

OK, I'm back! WOW, UCSD is absolutely GORGEOUS!! There is a panoramic shot of it--and it looks just so nice! I've only been to the UCLA campus (my sister is a '00 Alum!)...and UCLA is just wonderful, too. I would be so happy if I ended up at UCLA or UCSD...those are my top two choices, definitely. I think, that if I don't make it into the other UC's which I like (UCSB, UCI), I will go to Junior College first and try to get into UCLA or UCSD as a junior. I really don't wanna do that though...

Also, do you guys know anything about a Winter Program? My sister told me that there is such a program at UCLA called "Winter Bruin"...where incoming freshmen with lower GPAs then the rest of the incoming pool don't "officially" enter school until the Winter Quarter, though they still take classes in the fall. Does UCSD have anything like that?

Just looking at my brochure, Marshall and Muir colleges sound most appealing to me! I"m defintely going to go into the Social Sciences--I love working with people! I'm seriously thinking of Psychology or Sociology with a minor in Education (since the state of California doesn't allow Edu. Majors! :confused http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif!

SoCalGirl, that's funny how you said that most Psych majors would go to Marshall, Muir, or Roosevelt, in that order. Just looking at my brochure I thought I would fit in most with Marshall and Muir!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Pbpck, you are so sweet! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Thanks for your offer, I would defniitely love to e-mail you! I'm only a Junior in HS...I guess I might be too overprepared for Greek Life? My sister was in a sorority at UCLA and she loved it, and my best friend is also in one...and they have made me want to become a part of one too! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Also yes, i was prom queen a few weeks ago, it was wonderful! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif I might have to e-mail you later on in the week though http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif b/c I have tons of schoolwork to do until at least Thursday!! If you want to e-mail me first, though, it's in my profile, and I will respond to you from my regular e-mail address! Thanks for being so kind! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Don't mention it...you can e-mail me anytime at pbpck@hotmail.com. I totally feel you...I just finished midterms. I am always here to help. Oh yeah...and I am pretty sure all UC's have a delayed acceptance program where you can enroll in the winter quarter. You can also look at www.ucsd.edu. Looking forward to hearing from you!

newbie 04-30-2001 08:55 PM

You're awesome Pbpck!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Check out the post that I left for you in the Chit Chat Forum!! I am looking forward to e-mailing you soon--I wouldn't be doing it justice if I e-mailed you today or before Thursday--it would be quite short! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif I hope you don't mind--I'm notorious for my long e-mails!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Love, Newbie

P.S. I hope you did well on your Midterms! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

P.P.S.--Do you know if the delayed acceptance at UCSD is the same thing as the Winter Bruin program that I talked about at UCLA?

newbie 04-30-2001 09:00 PM

My goodness gracious, how could I forget to mention UCDavis???!!! My top three UCs are: UCLA, UCSD, UCD http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

SoCalGirl 04-30-2001 11:07 PM

pbpck--Yeah it does seem like most of the social people end up in Muir or Marshall! Revelle is definitely all about the books. I remember when I lived in Matthews, the ERC students would stand in the cul-de-sac and yell at us cause we we're studying at 2am on a Saturday night!!! LOL

Pike is really up to 120?!? They've always been strong. Probably cause all the guys are so cool. Pike and Sigma Chi definietly will be the top houses for a while. I'm glad that Delta Sig is doing so well. It sucked when they lost their charter. We weren't allowed to do anything w/ them!!!

pbpck 05-01-2001 12:26 AM

SoCal-
Yeah...I know. It sucks now that SAE got kicked off this past year! These boys... Ah well, they still had an awesome Paddy Murphy. The Pikes are now notorious for the gym-addict members. They even have madatory gym hours as a chapter(those days are always fun at RIMAC!).

Newbie- Grrr....I am so computer illiterate and I don't know how to add my e-mail onto my profile. You can e-mail me at pbpck@hotmail.com. I am stoked to hear from you! And thanks...I totally aced my Econ midterm and I think I came out alright in Japanese. I'll look into that UCSD delayed acceptance deal for sure!

pbpck 05-01-2001 03:56 PM

oh yeah...newbie...if you go to www.ucsd.edu...take the virtual tour. It's pretty cool. And if you ever want to visit UCSD for real, feel free to e-mail me and I can totally show you around...the tour guides here are so lame("And here is where the students live and here is the dining commons, this is our research lab and blah blah blah").Another thing, don't worry about your Soph year grades, universities look for improvement. When they see a positive trend in grades, they are more likely to accept you. So don't stress! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
Amy

newbie 05-03-2001 05:33 PM

Hey Amycat!

Yes, I know about Financial Aid...but even with it, it's still kind of expensive! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif My parents, I know, will be willing to sacrifice themselves in order for me to get a great college education, but I really don't know if attending USC would be practical on their wallets, and eventually, mine!! I'm not ruling out USC though...I will probably most definitely apply to it...just haven't decided if it's right for me!

AKA_Monet 05-06-2001 11:45 PM

HAAY!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

SDSU is not so bad in Greek Life!!! In fact it probably has a better greek life than in any of the other universities in San Diego!!! Moreover, the "Greek Row" housing on Hardy and Lindo Paseo is off and ready. Fall 2001 semester, it is gonna be OFF DA HOOK!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/cool.gif

The Rho Chi's at State are very nice young ladies. They get extensive training. As far as the Fraternities go, they say--"Real Men have no need for an application"... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif So...

But better be very careful with the "dry spell" that is happening. 'Cuz you can and will be alienated from the State's perspective if caught in an "alcohol induced coma"... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

Guess that's what TJ is all about... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif But

I'm waaayy over 21 and I don't have to worry... Mission Valley suits me just fine! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

SoCalGirl 05-07-2001 09:36 PM

All the restaurants/bars in Mission Valley does make it more appealing to me than downtown. I'm a suburb girl, keep me away from high rises!

But I do love that Circle Bar in Fashion Valley. Do a lil shopping have a cocktail and see a movie all in one spot. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hey if you want to talk to someone about greek life at ucla or anything in general about the place, I can put you in touch with an old friend. She's the head of her sorority. But I'm not quite sure if she's supposed to talk about her sorority or anything so I won't say which one it is. Also this online thing is weird so I'd have to tell her you're a friend of a friend...otherwise I won't hear the end of it. Tell me if you're interested. I'm busy in the next couple days but I'll try to respond quickly.
