Biological Greek Siblings

Hi all!

I was just wondering how many of you have biological brothers or sisters that went Greek. My younger brother joined Delta Tau Delta this past year at Butler University. (Greatest group of guys on campus!) I'm a Delta Gamma at Butler, by the way. Do you feel like you influenced your sibling or were influenced to join a certain house because of them? How has being Greek affected your relationship? I know that for my brother and I, we see each other a lot more often and get to hang out/party together which is a ton of fun. :D

My older sister was an AXO.. She went inactive early. But she did convince me to give my sorority a chance. I am way more involved than she was. We honestly have never really talked about anything greek.. Except on bid day when she told me to accept the snap bid. We had totally different sororities at both of our schools. so we are having totally different experiences.

wreckingcrew 08-08-2002 08:27 PM

My little sister pledged AXO her freshman year, when i was a junior. After seeing how much fun she had, and meeting some of the Sigma Nu's her and her sister's always hung out with, i decided to go through rush myself.

My little brother is an SAE at Northern Colorado.
Unfortunately we're five grades apart in school so we didn't overlap in high school or college at all and have always run in completely different circles.
I like to think that my being greek and enjoying it tremendously influenced his decision to rush but honestly, he might have done it anyway.

bcdphie 08-08-2002 11:54 PM

My brother joined Sigma Chi last year at UBC - unfortunately he is 6 years younger than me so I was already an alum by the time he joined, however I'm very close with his fraternity so we hang out at parties and formals, which is kind of strange sometimes, but also a tonne of fun :)

AngelPhiSig 08-09-2002 02:22 AM

We have had many sets of siblings in my chapter!!!!

Karyn and Kristin were in the same class - although not twins

Kirsten and Stephanie (Kirsten posts on here!)

Stephanie and Kristin

I think thats it!

AOX81 08-09-2002 12:00 PM

I only have one full blooded sibling and he did not finish high school. :( I'm the only Greek in my immediate family. I'm kind of sad because I'm sure my brother would have loved to join a fraternity. He always comes to my sorority events and ends up hanging out with all the fraternity guys.

PSUSigKap 08-09-2002 10:59 PM

my younger sister will be going through recruitment this fall at colorado state. she won't be a sig kap though :( we don't have a chapter there anymore. . .i know she'll end up where she's supposed to!

Edited to add: she ended up in kappa alpha theta and loves it!

Sisterplum 08-10-2002 11:42 PM

My younger brother is greek (he posts on here occasionally as zete_boy). He's in Zeta Psi....I'm in Iota Beta Chi.....both at Dalhousie University.

I think I influenced him into joining his fraternity. Before I joined IBX, I don't think I had heard much about my bro wanting to join a fraternity....but he did join Zeta Psi his first semester at Dal!:)

I'm happy....it made planning social events much easier!! I was the social chair.....and since I knew all the Zetes really well through my bro, most of my sisters got to be friends with them too! Plus I tried to have lots of events with them.....easier since my family only has one car (and my bro doesn't have a license...therefore I was driving him to his events.....and if I was already going too, it was just easier!:D)

I hope that when I have a daughter she will join a sorority....maybe even her mom's?! I can only dream!:D

dzsaigirl 08-11-2002 12:38 AM

First, my sister went to UH and I was already a DZ, but I couldn't get her to rush. Then she transferred to a school an hour and a half north of Houston (ahem...) that had a problem with their greek life the semester she transferred there...She also happened to be writing articles for her school paper at the time, so she got pretty good anti-greek propaganda through that experience considering what the "news" was that semester...Long story short, sister is not greek.

Fast forward to now. Brother went to my sister's school the first year, and has transferred to UH for his 2nd year. He has been invited out to rush events but is too "shy" and thinks it is "stupid" to go out with people you don't know to get to know them, or go anywhere alone...I told him to take his friends and he said "sure, and we'll talk to each other...". Nevermind the fact that the advisor for one of the fraternities is practically like a father to my husband, and the other fraternity that invited him out is my husband's fraternity. And this is a boy who has yet to step foot on campus...STILL he is already invited out! Can he not see the light!

So it looks like I will be the lonely greek in my family. It is me, my grandmother, husband, stepmother-in-law, stepsister-in-law and stepbrothers-in-law...but no siblings....*sigh*

SilverTurtle 08-11-2002 10:30 AM

My older bro went to school without a greek system.

Then I went to Capital & joined Phi Beta.

I have a step-sister who is 3 years younger than I am. We never lived together or anything (but get along just fine!) & she went to Kent State. She never even rushed. I don't think greek life is too big there, though?

My sister is 4 years youger than me. We were never in school together, either. We're not much alike at all, really. She went to the University of Akron. There isn't a Phi Beta chapter there. I didn't even know she was rushing, my mom emailed me one day and was all shocked and said "Did you know your sister is rushing!?" which I didn't. I don't know if my experience influenced her at all, or if she wanted to meet some people, or if she was planning it all along, or what? But, she ended up joining KKG. She got married & transferred the next year, though, to a school w/out Kappa, so she didn't get the full experience. I've really been pushing her to hook up with an alum association. (She looked into it when she was in GA, but it was like 2 hours away from her!) I *think* we're the only 2 greeks so far in the family.

carnation 08-11-2002 11:07 AM

My younger brothers pledged Sigma Chi and Lambda Chi at Mississippi State. However, back then Greek pledgeship lasted over a semester and you were initiated in January. The morons transferred to Texas schools after fall semester and never got to be initiated.

ZTAngel 08-11-2002 11:34 AM

My younger sister will be attending the University of Florida this fall. She's not rushing this year but hopefully she will next year. I'm crossing my fingers that she goes ZTA! :)

Silverturtle:
When did your sister go to Akron? I'm a DG there right now and I was just wondering if it was recently or a couple years ago??
Awesome that she was a Kappa.....they have some wonderful women in their chapter!

It was fall '99-spring '00 (she would be a senior this year if she still went there). I can't recall her big's name right now, although I've met her & some other Kappa sisters from the chapter (mostly @ my sis' wedding). They all seemed pretty cool. I've actually had quite a few friends go to Akron, as it's not all that far from where I grew up. My sister's the only one I know who went greek there, though.

hannahgirl 08-13-2002 10:39 PM

I pledged in Fall 99 so I might have met her at one time. :D

axotiger 10-10-2002 02:39 PM

one brother is a: LCA at Clemson with me
(actually, I'm a little sister for his fraternity... yay!!)

The other graduated from Auburn as an ATW

UGAGal 10-10-2002 05:42 PM

My brother was a Kappa Sig at Clemson so a lot of what I knew about sororities in the beginning came from him and his girlfriends. When I first rushed as a freshman I listened to his opinions too much and ended up dropping out because I was cut from the groups HE liked! :(

josh8o 10-10-2002 06:05 PM

my older sister is a KAPPA ALPHA THETA at Fresno State University. she went alum in spring of 2001, and graduated in spring of 2002.
she was the first greek person in my family and it showed me so much about greek life. it actually sparked my interest in fraternities. when i rushed she was all about what houses San Diego State had, and what ones i was looking at. when i pledged a house i did not like, then droped it she was there for me to give much needed advice. i think its really cool to have someone older in your family who is greek and you can look up to.

nauadpi 10-10-2002 06:19 PM

well in my family, my sister is 12 years older than me. So her being greek did not really effect me at all, she was a Delta Gamma. The funny part was that when my family heard I went greek, they thought I was crazy since i was nothing like my sister. But I love it, and love my sorority sisters to death.

DRau 10-11-2002 06:13 AM

I am an Alpha Phi alum from UCSB, and my little sister is currently an Alpha Phi at Cal Poly SLO.

As of this year, there are three pairs of biological sisters who are Alpha Phi's at Santa Barbara & Cal Poly.

go figure....

Kevin 10-11-2002 09:06 AM

My little brother is an ATO... If you're a Sigma Nu that's probably one of the greatest tragedies that could occur:D

(I'm over it)

They started recruiting him when he was still in highschool though. I was LC of my chapter at the time (2nd guy on the totem pole) and it may have been a little intimidating for him.

C'est la vie.

axotiger 10-11-2002 10:01 AM

Hey UGAGal,
Does your brother still go to Clemson? Hmmm, probably wouldn't make a difference though, I dont know many Kappa Sigs. But I do know what you are talking about with brothers influence... my brother was like, "well so-and-so don't like me" and "xyz are the partyiers .. but abc are fun... " etc etc. It's kinda hard!! But I love Alpha Chi, we party hard and we're fun :D

SoTrue1920 10-11-2002 11:19 AM

I became a Zeta in March, 1995. My oldest sister became a member a year later. People always assume that just because she's older than I am, that she must have influenced me, but I'm quick to point out that she's my "little" big sister. :)

UGAGal 10-11-2002 11:57 AM

axotiger - nope, he graduated 10 or 11 years ago. :)

ChiOJenn78 10-11-2002 12:31 PM

So far I'm the only Greek in my immediate family. I have an uncle and a couple of cousins that are Greek, but thats it. And my brother has some time to think about whether or not he'll be Greek, since he's only 4!! :D

However, when he heads off to college in 14 years, I will encourage him to go greek!! By that time, he'll have a brother-in-law who is a Sigma Nu, and uncle who is a Lambda Chi, a cousin who is SAE, and another uncle who is a Pike-so hopefully they can work on him! :D

axotiger 10-11-2002 02:08 PM

UGAGal -
aw, gotcha!! :p

Oh yeah, my dad is also an AGR ... so we're pretty Greek driven. My mom's the only one in the family who isn't... and she even wanted me to go Greek when I was a freshman.

UofIL AXO 10-11-2002 02:49 PM

My little cousin started at Illinois this year in a dorm far away from the center of campus. I encouraged him to go greek since the day I found out he got accepted! I definetly shaped his opinion because when he got here, he asked what houses did I think that he'd like. And now he's a happy Delta Tau Delta (my original suggestion). He's also looking to move into the Delt house in the spring. Hooray!

axotiger 10-11-2002 03:09 PM

Nice Nice Nice!! Good work girl! Hey, UofIL AXO, have you been to the Alpha Chi forum lately? I posted a new one there... that you should check out :D

honeychile 10-11-2002 05:14 PM

My brother went to business school, so wasn't a Greek, but...

Literally EVERYONE on my street who went to college was a Greek! More interestingly, no one is in the same GLO!! I think growing up seeing "The Lyre" and "The Trident" and other fraternity/sorority paraphenalia around my friends' homes did a number on me - when I went to college, I honestly thought that anyone who wasn't a Greek had tried to pledge, but wasn't accepted!! :)

ADPiAkron 12-14-2003 04:26 PM

A little updating to this post...

I am an ADPi from The University of Akron and my father is a Phi Kappa Tau from Akron. My younger sister pledged last spring...not ADPi to my dismay...but we are all happy for her! She is an AXO from Miami University in Ohio.

ADPiZXalum 12-14-2003 04:50 PM

It's so funny how all that works out AkronADPi. there was this girl who rushed who had us and Pi Phi as her last two parties and ended up joining Pi Phi. She was from Macon, Georgia (which is where ADPi was founded, for all of you who probably don't know that)!! Anyway, she is awesome, and we remained pretty good friends and she told me a year later her little sister rushed at a school in Georgia and ended up going ADPi. I thought that was kinda funny. I said, " See it was just destiny that someone in your family be an ADPi." :D
I don't have any brothers or sisters. Neither my mom or dad went to a college with a Greek system. My kids will hopefullly want to be Greek. I havent met Mr. Right yet, so maybe my husband will one day be a fraternity man. That'd be cool. My junior year of college, I found out my aunt was a Kappa Kappa Gamma and my grandpa was a Lambda Chi Alpha.
Something I was thinking about earlier: I always thought I'd be so die hard ADPi that my daughter would never have another choice, until this one situation happened. I hope this story doesn't cross any lines, but I wont' mention the other chapter. A girl who rushed this last year had us and XYZ (to which she was a legacy throughher mom) as her two pref parties. She joined XYZ. I saw her a few weeks later and she said she wished she could've joined ADPi but her mom wouldn't have paid for ANYTHING (not even school anymore) if she had gone anything else. She ended up being miserable. I don't want that to happen to my daughter someday. So maybe I'll just strongly encourage her, but not FORCE. : ) Just my random thoughts. :)

RACooper 12-14-2003 05:03 PM

I've probably mentioned this elsewere but my baby sister joined Gamma Phi Beta last year..... at my school no less. It is someways kinda cool, and in other ways a little weird (think mixers).

DeltaSigStan 12-14-2003 05:28 PM

I think I had the reverse effect in the sense that I think my antics have convinced my family to not join IFC or panhellenic. One cousin is joining an Asian sorority, and my other cousin is considering Kappa Kappa Psi once he's in college.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought no one was supposed to know? We had no idea that the guy who dropped our house was pledging Sigma until he had his letters, and he said he wasn't allowed to tell anyone.

I should also ask Starang, the NPHC is the fastest growing council out here. Has Iota ever thought of expanding to SDSU, or do they have a metro chapter here? They were the only ones from the D9 who didn't step at the last show.

Oh, I understand perfectly!!! We had a five-generation legacy rush our chapter. She did not want to go greek (she only rushed us), but of course, she was pushed into going ADPi by her mother, two aunts, and her grandmother who was then one tier away from Grand Council (and probably the ghosts of two prior generations!). Anyhow, she was a miserably unhappy pledge, and we were informed that she would be initiated at Convention, rather than at our chapter. Convention Initiation being as grand as it seems, she transferred to a school without a greek system immediately afterwards, and her name doesn't even appear in any of the alumnae undate books.

I highly doubt that there will be a six-generation legacy from her - but stranger things have happened! :)

ISUKappa 12-15-2003 01:31 PM

My older sister (4 years older) was a Kappa at the same school I went to (Iowa State.) I got to know so many girls in the chapter because of her and, though I think I would have been okay elsewhere, I'm really glad I'm a Kappa. We have some similar personality traits, but were very different otherwise.

Quote:

We had a five-generation legacy rush our chapter
honeychile We did too! (only I think ours was only a 4-generation leg. She said somewhere a few cousins had gone Pi Phi and were practically disowned! ;)). She was a sweetheart, but I think she felt very pushed into Kappa. I was one of the girls who talked to her at Pref night (because noone else wanted to--they were scared) and she later confessed that I was the reason she joined! *tear* She stayed in all four years, and now her younger sister is a Kappa at our chapter, too! :)
