Alpha Omega Pi?
 

On the Greek Life forum, there was a discussion about a movie coming out, "Pumpkin" and the sorority that is in it. The sorority in this movie is Alpha Omega Pi. I didn't think a sorority by that name existed until this afternoon. I was looking at the Greek Life website of SUNY Geneseo and found the Alpha Omega Pi website. I have no problem with the fact that their letters are very close to ours, but I do have a problem with them using AOII as their abbreviation. I brought this concern up to a friend in another house and she said that we should notify nationals. She said that they should know about this because chances are that AOII is under copyright with Alpha Omicron Pi.
Does anyone know anything about this? If that is the case, I am going to notify my chapter advisor ASAP.

Yes, 'AOII' is trademarked. Contact your CA, and she will contact the appropriate people at International for you.

Note : There is a local at Youngstown who are called Alpha Omega Pi as they are a local interested in recolonizing our AOII there. This may be the same situation at Geneseo ...

A lot of the SUNY locals may hve names that are close to national groups. This is because NY state made all the SUNY's get rid of nationals in 1954, then when they permitted nationals on again, a lot of the groups just stayed local.

Case in point:

I don't think my HQ can do anything about them calling themselves "ASA" since we would also have to get after the American Statistical Association and the Amateur Softball Association. I do wish they would have altered the crest a little more, though. So this may be something like that.

Number two, NeonPi and AOII luv haven't been on greekchat in ages and 33girl isn't an AOII so I don't know who you're talking to.

Wow! Unfortunately, a lot of Alpha Omicron Pi sisters use AOPi to abbreviate Alpha Omicron Pi (which is incorrect because it is mixing Roman and Greek letters. II is the closest to Pi that you can type without changing the font - which is not possible on a typewriter. TT is also incorrect.). It is also very probable that four and half years ago your website used AOII and not the current AOPi - which still can be EASILY confused with Alpha Omicron Pi.

I think a point that was being made four and a half years ago (but in a different thread) is that not only are the letters similar, but the flower, mascot, etc are too similar to be a coincidence.

The Alpha Omega Pi at SUNY Geneseo seems a lot less like AOII than the Alpha Omega Pi at Youngstown. Especially since we never had a chapter at Geneseo.

Pardon my repeated crashing of this board. I know it's old and blah blah blah. I was looking for an ebay thread to let your sisters know about a badge and then this thread piqued my interest.

At my campus, members use AOPi and AOII to abbreviate Alpha Omicron Pi interchangeably. It never struck me that "AOPi" is incorrect, since A is both "Ay" and Alpha, and O is both "Oh" and Omicron. So A and O are both Roman and Greek. Therefore, they'd both be correct, since AOPi would be the Roman abbreviation and AOII is the Greek letter approximation on a keyboard. I hate when I see AOTT. It always reads "Ay Oh Tee Tee" in my head. It's weird to see aoii, since that always reads "Ay Oh Eye Eye" in my head.

I know I wouldn't appreciate a local with a nickname that sounds exactly the same as my sorority, especially if they had a bad reputation (meaning hazing, drugs, excessive promiscuity etc). I wonder if there is an Alpha Chi Omicron or an Alpha Zeta Delta or a Theta Pi Alpha out there. Oy.

There was a Theta Pi Alpha at Penn State, but they've since merged with another sorority.

Probably every one of the NPC groups has a local or some other org out there using the same nickname. For what it's worth, some Theta Phi Alpha chapters go by "Thetas" which is what Kappa Alpha Theta's national nickname is. I don't believe they share any campuses. Not to mention boy Phi Sigs/girl Phi Sigs and things like that.

I honestly don't think using the same nickname is a big deal, by itself. But when you use the same nickname, colors, philanthropy, mascot...then yeah, that's a bit much. I looked at the SUNY chapter's site and I don't think anyone would confuse them with Alpha Omicron Pi because the colors and imagery are different. That group in Y-town though...

Same thing with us and Alpha Sigma Phi.

Oh yeah I guess I never really thought about that... red and white, "Alpha Sig", phoenix...

ETA: But at least one is dudes and the other is girls.

The only people who might say it's a coincidence are those who haven't read the thread. Anybody who has read the thread with any care can see in post # 2 that it is not a coincidence.

Just to stir the pot a little- The Youngstown State Alpha Omega Pi motto is "Individual But United", which is the same thing as the Ohio Univerisity (Omega Upsilon chapter) AOII Chapter's Submotto.

And I believe that the YSU group's old advisor is an AOII alumna (from OU).

I actually spoke with a YSU AOII alumna who would LOVE for this group to succeed. She would love for her chapter to be back at YSU, and if this is the way to do it, she was all for it. It kind of reminds me of the ZETA group at URI- they did end up as a ZTA colony.

Individual but United sounds like a reference to our sheaf of wheat as well! I'm not offended by a group that clearly was formed as an AOII interest group. They aren't AOII. They don't know our ritual. Who cares if they use our nickname or color?

ok so i just looked it up. is Alpha OMEGA Pi suppose to be like a spin off or interest group for Alpha Omicron Pi because everything is the same and I just don't understand. I'm sorry if I'm the only dummy not getting it but I just want to understnad. from what i understand is they are just a group who is trying to get Alpha Omicron Pi on campus. is that correct?

All I can say is, if they are interested in being colonized by AOII, it is taking them a hell of a long time.

ok girls.. I can help clear all of this up..
Alpha Omega Pi at Youngstown State was founded back in 1997 by 4 woman. 2 of which transfered from OU and were AOII's there. Which is why all of their stuff is so close to AOII.
As for them becoming national and colonizing, I don't know if it will happen soon. I really don't see AOII picking them up. I would love to see it happen but right now I don't think it is an option for them.
The way I look at it is, you can't punish them for what their founders did. The girls of Alpha Omega Pi at YSU have made something of themselves over the years! They are one of the top chapters on campus. They have reached total for recruitment for the past 2 years. They have the highest GPA out of all of Greek Life and they won Sorority of the Year this past year! That's only naming a few of the awards they've won.
I'm not saying what they founders did was right, but the woman of Alpha Omega Pi are great and I'm proud to call them my sisters! Now I really dont want to cause any problems, I just really wanted to clear this up. I hope it helped and if you guys have any questions feel free to ask. =]

Hmm, since I graduated from OU in 1996 and am an AOII from there, I probably would remember two of your founders! To be honest, I know of at least one AOII alum from YSU who would love to see AOII back there.

I guess I see it more as flattery than anything else. Although I am curious as to what Alpha Omega Pi ritual looks like...

well from what I hear AOII won't be picking us up anytime soon. I guess they are mad at us bc of how close we are to them. which i mean i understand. personally i wouldnt want to go national with any other chapter but AOII. It just makes more sense to me.

but as for the rituals.. i dont know if they are the same as AOII but i do know that we have changed some things since i've been in the chapter.

and the 2 founders from OU are Anne Marie Colaprete and Sherry Rickard!

Actually, the Youngstown chapter's motto is the exact same as my AOII chapter's sub-motto
