hey there! its great you're so excited!
do a search for a post by "southerntheta" she gives some great rush advice. Good Luck! Amy ------------------ "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt |
about your resume: usually people say that a resume should only be one page long. you don't need to list every little thing you've ever done... just the big things that will set you apart from the crowd. you should be able to cut it down to one page, or else you're listing things that aren't that important. besides, if it's several pages long, you can be sure they'll get bored and stop reading after the 1st page! so narrow down your accomplishments and list the big ones that will make you stand out, and be concise.
about recs, unless you've heard otherwise, you should probably send however many you can get. if women are offering to write them, definitely accept. recs are really important at big southern schools. |

Hi, future UA girl...as an alum of a sorority in your state, I'd like to give you one important bit of advice: go into rush with an open mind. Please, oh please don't listen to people who tell you that only 3 or 5 or 7 sororities count and the rest are losers. Not only will you miss out on meeting some fabulous girls if you cut too soon but you could cut yourself out of rush! Listen to your heart and not to campus gossip.

As a member at a predominately Greek school in the South, let me give you some advice: List only the most important activities to you....nothing is worse than when I ask a rushee about an activity she has done in hs and she says "oh, that, well, I never reallllllllly went....". I too participated in many activities, in fact my senior stats took up 3/4 of the yearbook page! But just make sure you know what you're talking about, and can carry on a convo with each topic you list....you get 10-15 minutes...make it lasting! As for the resume itself, I'd ditch the pink paper. It can be construed as "sucking up" to a group that has that color, and although it will stand out, it seems to be trying a little too hard. plain white is perfectly fine. If you'd like something different, have your monogram at the heading, or4 use an ecru shade. Classic, conservative....that's the name of the game in the south, esp. during Rush. Concentrate on standing out AT the house, not on pepto paper. USE EVERY REC YOU CAN! I cannot stress that enough! Good luck!

Where are you from? I will be at Alabama next year too. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
***USE EVERY REC YOU CAN! I cannot stress that enough! Good luck!***
I'm sorry if this is obvious to everyone else but what does Rec stand for...? I've yet to hear of that term. Thanks! |
Rec= Reccomendations, you get these from family members, friends, etc. that have been in sororities that you are interested in, or that are on campus at your school. Rec's are VIP at most larger schools, in many sororities, we ask girls back based on Recs.

There is a big thread regarding rush at LSU, as well as how tough things can be for rudh in the South. I agree w/SusanL5000, ditch the pink paper and go for a monogrammed type. Sometimes that can get expensive when you have several packets to put together so I recommend practicing w/stamps, getting it done neatly, and consider using that for your monogram, if money is tight for you. As for recs, GET ALL YOU CAN! No one can express how much emphasis is put on recs to Southern schools. Good luck and let keep us updated on your planning and how things go!

Oh, I cannot stress this enough, please don't wear perfume!!!! When I went through rush, we were advised against it, but several girls wore it anyway. It was almost unbearable. Lots of the houses had scented candles lit and potpourri around their house and it was overwhelming. Combine this with several different perfume fragrances, and it's almost nauseating. NO PERFUME! If you must, wear a lightly scented lotion. And I had problems with sweaty hands. I know it sounds gross, but I wasn't the only one. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gifFall Rush months in the South are guaranteed to be hot and humid, plus I had the jitters. I doused kleenex with baby powder and kept them in my pockets or purse so all I had to do was clench it for a few moments and I seemed calm as a cucumber. After I was initiated, I still used my kleenex trick b/c the rushees had the same sticky hands problem.
I know this isn't the most glamorous thread http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif but you just don't know how much more confident you will feel about shaking hands with hundreds of girls, if you have dry palms. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif |
oooh yeah on the perfume bit! I am very allergic to 90% of the perfumes out there, so distressing to spend a rush party sneezing left and right because of the rushees perfume. Not the way you want to be remembered as the chick who made me sneeze. (I am JOKING, in case you couldn't tell, I would NEVER drop someone for perfume.)
ANd tuck some of those clean and clear tissues that soak the oil off the face without removing your makeup into your purse too. They'll help you feel fresh. Rush in Los Angeles in August is notoriously hot too. We did everything we could to keep from wilting. One last tip: Don't wear a watch. Most people glance at them out of habit and don't even know they're doing it. You don't want to inadvertently send the message that you've got someplace better to be. Leave the watch in your purse. Or better yet, at home. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Amy |
Thank you guys sooooo much for the advise!!! I appreciate it more than you will ever know!!! I am so dang nervous about this it's unbelievable!! :) So I should ditch the paper, huh? What if it's a silver color?? Still too much?? Anyways, please keep your advise and assistance coming! And I'm from Montgomery for the person who asked that...where are you from??
Thank you all soo much!! And keep it comin'! |

I am from Birmingham. I am so excited about next year! are you going down to Tuscaloosa on Apr. 6 & 7 for Panhellenic Weekend? |
futureUAgirl....
White or buff paper, please. The colored paper might seem a little flaky (although it's cool for personal use) and also, you will probably end up using this or that sorority's color which wouldn't look good to them OR to other sororities. I can't agree with carnation more - go into rush with an open mind and open heart. |
Hey!! Im goin to UA also next year, and have decided to rush. If you find out ANYTHING at all informative PLEASE e-mail me. liz@scott.net. Well where are you from?? Did you go April 7th for panhellenic weekend?? It was cool. Good luck
|
UA has a Panhellenic Weekend? What is it about? What do you do?
|
Yes, you are all at an advantage rushing now. You can go look at the national websites-- which are pretty much all www.nameofGLO.org-- ie: www.kappaalphatheta.org EXCEPT for chi omega which is .com - www.chiomega.com (chi o's ORG site is out of date)
Anyway, you can look at the nationals sites and get a feel and a flavor for each chapter. When I rushed way back in the dark ages of 1989, we went in knowing nothing and winged it--not the best strategy. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Amy [This message has been edited by amycat412 (edited April 09, 2001).] |

I am my chapter's rush chair, so here is some ideas from our side with another thought on the perfume note, the south is also notorious for bugs and since you don't want to scratch yourself in front of people after showering for the night put some skin so soft or some sort of bug away lotion on, that way the smell will dispell by the time you head out for rush. The watch tip is really a good one to, because when you look at your watch it tells me "I am bored and don't care about what you are saying". Don't wear any gawdy jewelry because it is ditracting. The earrings that Jennifer Lopez helped bring back are cool at clubs not at rush. Be yourself. Look your best, but remember looks are not what sororities are looking for, they are looking for how well do you click?, how would you fit in? What do you have to offer the sorority (I know that when someone says they are looking for a place to hold an office or make a difference that means something to me), people look at your presence, how would you represent the sorority and it's ideals. Read up on the sororities at your school, but not just their local chapters, look at the national organization. Find out what they are about. Take a list of questions in your pocket for each house and before you walk in look at that houses list. It makes a huge difference when someone comes in and says "I was reading about XYZ and it says that your philanthropy is this... what type of fundraisers do you hold for this" My favorite is when they ask why our mascot is what it is or what it represents. If there is anything else you need to know, just e mail me. I can help you as much as possible.

My parents are getting all of my rec letters for me, and are having the person who writes the letter send it to the individual sororities. I went to panhellenic weekend this past weekend, and they said that they would send us a rush booklet/guidebook with all of the sororities' addresses, advice on what to wear, etc. in May. Also, I have several friends in sororities down there already, so they have contacted me, asking me to send in my resume and pictures. |
