Remembering Founders
I have a problem! I can never remember the names of my sorority's founders. I remember bits and pieces of their names, but I've been in the sorority for 2 yrs I should know by now from pledgeship and the national tests etc!!!! I feel like a horrible Greek!!!! Yet I can remember what someone wore last week and what accessories they wore etc
|
Delta Phi Epsilon has the acronym D.I.M.E.S. for our 5 national founders which takes some of the pressure off:
Dorothy Cohen Schwartzman Ida Bienstock Landau Minna Goldsmith Mahler Eva Effron Robin Sylvia Steireman Cohn I can't say the same about our local founders though =o\ |
WE use many little cows jump vertically, but it's the last names bc they each have two last names!!!! UGH! oh well
|
Lana, I hope you've never forgotten "a rootin, a tootin, a Calva Watson Wootton"!! ;)
|
We have 11 founders, and I can only ever remember about 5 of them. One of my sisters made up a poem once to remember them all...I should ask her if she still knows it so that I can remember them, but I won't post it here because it was really dirty. ;) :p
Ok, here are the ones I definitely remember: Georgia Dickover Marguerite Shepard Estelle Shepard Jennie Titus Smith Morris Emily Butterfield I think there was one named Flora Knight Mayer, too...I know it was something similar to Florence Nightingale, so that's how I remember it. Any Alpha Gams have any hints for remembering them? |
Don't feel bad. I am about to be a senior and I still can't always remember the names of all our founders (we have 9). I know - I am the worst Zeta ever!!! Themis is going to come down and strike me with lightning!! If I really try, I can maybe do it....
|
I have a very good memory and can name them right off the top of my head at any given moment.

I think the easist way to remember the founders is to make up a short story. Find a way to string all the founders together and then you'll never forget (especially if it's comical). I initiated in '99 and I still remember the story I made up and always teach it to some of the new members so they will remember. |

Three seconds of web surfing:
http://www.uwrf.edu/alpha-sigma-alpha/history.htm I didn't know ASA was another Longwood College sorority (we had KD and ZTA at my school). *yawn* I guess I need to go do something productive now... |
Ours are
Hellen St Clair Mullen Stella George Stern Perry Jessie Wallice Hughan Elizabeth "Bes" Heywood Wyman Hopefully they are all spelled correctly! :) :) Sarah |

I remember SAI's founders by the acronym "FLENGM2" (FLENGM Squared):
Francis Caspari Leila Farlin Laughlin Elizabeth A. Campbell Nora Crane Hunt Georgina Potts Mary Storrs Andersen Minnie Davis Sherrill -Jessica |
Let's see ... as a former fraternity heritage chair, this could be embarrassing:
Frances Lowery Cheney Almira Cheney Cora Bollinger Block Harriet Luella McCollum Lucy Gilmer Lewie Strong Taylor Bertha Cook Evans shoot! Alice Bartlett Bruner Eliza Drake Curtis Everton Julia Maude Foster I had to look those last three up. :( |
It's easy when there are only 3...
James Frank Hopkins James McIlvane Riley Greenfield Quarles |
we did ours as E-FILM
Elizabeth Goraham Hoag Frances Mann Hall Ida Fuller Pearce Louise Helen Coburn Mary Low Carver (my personal fave. . .she haunts our shower in our dorm at psu and supposedly she haunts the dorm named after her at colby college) |
For some strange reason I'm glad that my sorority had only 7 founders, and that we only had to memorize their maiden names... (whew) :)
Helen Phillips Ida Beck Rose Gerstein Augustina "Tina" Hess Lee Reiss Rose Salmowitz Stella Strauss |
Lets see how many I remember. There are 10 and each one except one has three names (first name, maiden name, married name)
-Fay Chertkoff (shes easy) -Shirly Cohen Laufer -Josephine Ellison Breakstone -Estelle Melnick Cole -Ethel Gordon Kraus -Lillian Gordon Alpern Thats all I can remember for now. 6 out of 10 isn't bad considering it is august and I have been away from all sorority things since early may. Theres always the website: www.phisigmasigma.org |
Any Alpha Gam out there please Pm me the founder song
as well!! I can never remember them all! I can recognize them when I see them I can never list them when asked though! |
I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who can't remember all 11! Leslie, please post your founders story as soon as you get the chance. :)
