Sue Heck…PNM
If anyone is keeping a definitive list of Greek life representation on TV, set your DVR for the January return of The Middle on ABC. I saw a preview last night, and apparently awkward-but-sweet college freshman Sue Heck is going to participate in sorority recruitment (or rush, as I’m sure it will be called on the show).
I’m really pulling for Sue! She reminds me so much of myself at that age. I just hope it works out for her. Please let there be a chapter on her campus (fictional East Indiana State University) that is not the stereotypical TV/movie sorority of shallow mean girls and ditzy pageant queens, and will welcome Sue to their sisterhood. |
Very cool! I worked at Walt Disney World when they filmed their episode there. I kept trying to get into the shot, but it didn't work out ;) I don't watch the show much, but I'll definitely tune into this episode!
|
Maybe ABC will make it a Cinderella story (Disney tie-in) where the Sue gets a bid and flourishes to become the president of her sorority senior year.
|
Awww, I adore Sue Heck! She has such a great determination and she would make a great sorority sister!
|
Wouldn't it be awesome if Sue finally got her big break in a sorority? :)

Maybe we need to send in some recs.... |
Come on!
Sue Heck has very good grades. And, interesting activities: 1) Cross-Country team (albeit, the 'NON-CUT" cross-country team) 2) Wrestlerette Plus, some fun facts that could go on her Recruitment Resume: * Was accidentally put on the RIP page in her high school yearbook * Is a Leap Year baby * Left handed |
I think Sue would be a perfect sorority girl! She's got so much energy and genuine enthusiasm, I really hope it all goes well for her.
Edited to add a link to the promo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QypqWN8fDz8 |
I'm really hopeful that she gets a bid! Patricia Heaton who plays the mom is a Delta Gamma and dad Neil Flynn is a Sigma Nu. Since there really is Greek life knowledge on the set, I can't imagine them wanting it written so that Sue Sue Heck doesn't find her home.
I LOVE this show and am pulling hard for Sue the PNM. She'd be so into her sorority -- imagine the story lines they could create. I'm also thinking she might get some special attention because brother Axl is on the football team and has always been popular. Go Sue Sue! |
Is Axl in a fraternity on the show?
|
I don't think so. I believe he's just on the football team. There was one episode where he and his housemate had a party to give "bids" to potential new roommates and they called it Axl Frat or something, but that house has since been condemned. :)
|
Hmmm... Most Popular Sorority President has a crush on Axl, makes sure that Sue gets a bid. MPSP meets Axl at Family Day, they date. Sue is initiated, Axl breaks up with MPSP, Sue ends up fitting in, in her own quirky way.
|
I could see that scenario!
I've seen so many girls who were Sue's in high school, but found their niche in college and thrived. Would love to see the same thing for Sue. :) |
Here are some pictures of Sue's rush! http://images.spoilertv.com/the-midd...4_7198.jpg.php
|
These pictures lead me to think that Sue becomes fast friends with the PNM every chapter wants and they end up pledging together.
With the White Hot PNM saying she won't pledge without Sue so they either: 1) get in Super-Strong Sorority that wants WH PNM and takes Sue, with Sue evolving to be Most Involved Sister, OR 2) join together in a Weak Recruiting Chapter that wants Sue (but didn't think they had a chance with WH PNM) that becomes a Super Chapter over 4 years, with their White Hot Beauty Queen member and their Mega -Involved & Dedicated member (Sue). |
I think that Sue gets cut. The Beauty Queen has become her bestie, so of course, they decide to start their OWN sorority. They invite all of the awkward/ didn't fit in girls on campus to join them. Sue blossoms and leads the chapter to respectability :-)
|
If she does, I hope that campuses won't be inundated by women who think it's easy to form your own group! And maybe become an NPC sorority--
|
I could go with either of ChiLu's scenarios, or any scenario that lands Sue in a chapter -- I just want her to pledge and finally be accepted! I could also see thetalady's scenario, given that Sue has a history of starting something to make up for what she didn't get -- like the wrestlerettes when she didn't make cheerleader. I'm having a hard time waiting this out. C'mon on Wednesday!
|
Well, rats! We don't have recording, and I have an important meeting on Wednesday night. I REALLY hope that I can see it on demand. :(
|
It's on tonight! Go Sue!

ETA: SPOILERS AHEAD!! |
I have a sorority conference call from 8-8:30. Thank you, DVR!
|
So far, so good! I like how Sue's rush buddy has a great attitude about recruitment and keeping your options open!
|
Just the way we like a rush story... QUICK AND TO THE POINT!
NO, SUE, NO! Don't blow out the candle! |
Love that Sue had invites. Velvet Rabbit pref, lol.
|
Well, I was half right :-( I really hated this episode. Gives exactly the WRONG message about sororities and rush, clearly not an RFM campus. I sense a little writer hostility.

The Velveteen Rabbit Pref reminded me a little of a pref ceremony I attended. I didn't love the ending, obviously.
|
I didn't like the ending, but I did think the bump group conversation was funny, as well as the ineffectively empathetic Rho Gamma that everyone blew off.
|
The "Sue finds a sister" part at the end was sweet, the rush was fun, but the way those girls found out they were bidless? The more I think about it, the more it pisses me off. PNMs don't show up at a bid reveal only to be given an empty envelope. I'd like to smack the writers because they probably scared the daylights out of some girls getting ready to rush.
I know, it's just a TV show, but still! |
Should have been extended across two episodes. The door chant was fun, as was the bump group but hated the bid reveal obviously, and if the writers didn't want to incorporate a sorority into the storyline, it would have been a more interesting choice for the two to talk, decide they didn't want to join a sorority after all, and leave their unopened bids on the chairs. I wish they would let Sue de-geek just a little this season, appearance wise, but glad they finally provided a college friend. The room mate bit was absurd at the beginning of the season.
As my husband says, I watch too much TV... |
So that was…interesting! I know they had to make the whole storyline fit into one-third of a 22-minute episode (as well as simplifying the logistics of rush/recruitment for a general audience), but having PNMs show up at bid reveal to open an envelope that says “you did not receive a bid”- is there any school (RFM or not) that does that? Geez…
That part where Sue was saying “We’re the boy!” I was almost positive the next words out of her mouth were going to be “Let’s start our own sorority.” I wonder if that’s coming later. I do think that pink coat she wore was adorable. |

I was definitely thinking, well, they're at bid opening so they must've have gotten in somewhere. But of course, tv always gets it wrong.

The closest situation I recall had three sororities, individual bids in three separate color envelopes (one color used per group), and rushees able to view all the envelopes at one time as individually opening their bid in a room with all other rushees. One group only gave a third as many bids. Some rushees who wanted to join the group their friend had just bid received an envelope NOT of her friend's color, so they would not open it to join that different group. Oh, it was hideous. |
So my brother and sister love the show and my sister is a part of an NPHC sorority. So she just watched it and made me explain to her the whole recruitment process. She told me Sue and her friend didn't get a bid and I had to tell her while it can happen it's super rare that someone will go through the entire process and not get a bid come bid day.
Also in terms of invites saying Bid or no Bid, while I was a recruitment counselor this past semester we had to call our women that didn't receive a bid so they wouldn't come to bid day and end up being upset as to that they didn't get it. |
I'm still disappointed.

I really like "The Middle", but have only seen episodes here and there; I don't watch it regularly.
What happened to the character who played Sue's flamboyant guy friend? Is he not at the same college? I did wonder what happens to PNMs who don't receive a bid. So that means if you don't get a phone call before the Bid Day reveal, you're automatically in, huh? |
