sorority beads

Hi all!

I was just curious if anyone has ever heard of girls wearing "sorority beads." They're not big at my school but I've heard them referred to as "b**** beads" before. I was just wondering if I could could some insight into what kind of jewlrey this is, where you buy them, etc. Thanks for the info! :)

DRau 07-24-2002 12:15 AM

I am not sure if this is what you are talking about but...

In CA (And I would be curious to know if this were true for the rest of the country), the Tiffany Tag bracelets and necklaces (the chunk ones with the 'Return to Tiffany' tag) are trademark sorority girl....

CarolinaDG 07-24-2002 12:34 AM

No, not the Tiffany's bracelets... They're sterling silver beads. You may have already seen them, just never heard them referred to as "sorority beads." I mean, we even call black stretch pants (the jazz dance pants) "sorority pants" sometimes b/c that's what every sorority wears for homecoming dances. And this style (the beads) may have gone out of style where y'all are from a long time ago... we're a little slow here in the south.;-) Seriously, it takes trends a little longer to get to us for some reason... Probably because we're not near a big city like LA or New York where things spread a little faster... point being, these beads may have gone out of style a long time ago. I'd send you a pair if they weren't so expensive (well, not expensive, $25, but still...). Anyway, I've been looking for a picture, so as soon as I find one, I'll post it. You'll probably know what I'm talking about as soon as you see them.

pollywogg23 07-24-2002 12:55 AM

Where Do you order these "soroity Beads from, they sound cool, but I don't think I've ever seen them before.

DRau 07-24-2002 01:00 AM

CarolinaDG now I am more curious than ever... find a picture and post!

sororitygirl2 07-24-2002 01:47 AM

DRau,

Those Tiffany's bracelet and necklaces are a definite sorority staple on every campus I have visited!

Ooh, now I know what you're talking about... we had those in our greek store in town a couple years ago, but they never really caught on at my school. I wear mine once in a while, but probably not more than 2 or 3 times a year :(

maggieaxid 07-24-2002 09:52 AM

i've seen them before, but they are a popular gift for big littles...usually as a key chain or something.

SLOTheta 08-02-2002 02:04 AM

I would have to say the Tiffany's bracelets are still very in, but it seems so 3 years ago! I love my bracelets, but received them before I was in the house, and now they are all over!

Also, the modular bracelets made my companies like Nominations and Zoppini are really big, they are "Italian Charm Bracelets" and seem to have popped up on every sorority's girl's wrist! Along with the Kate Spade bags...

texas*princess 08-02-2002 04:53 PM

*that's* what sorority beads are!!

I was wondering what the heck everyone was talking about!

Those beads were really popular when i was in junior high.. all the "cool" girls had a silver bead necklace with their name spelled out with those beads

anchorjenni 08-02-2002 05:51 PM

I think you've got it wrong...

We've actually been having a discussion about these "sorority beads" on the Delta Gamma board. I don't think you guys have the right kind of necklace in mind. What CarolinaDG and dgqtpi are talking about are those necklaces that look like pearls, but they're actually silver beads. These were a big hit about 5 years ago. LOL. Not everybody in the South is that far behind (but if it gives you an idea - Kate Spades just got hot a year or so ago). Personally, I rather have the Tiffany's bracelet!

Back me up girls, if I'm right.

Jennifer

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-02-2002 06:01 PM

That's what I thought y'all were talking about, too.

The letter block beads are popular, too.... but mostly as keychains.

CarolinaDG 08-03-2002 12:20 AM

ha ha ha... Yeah... the little spell your name out necklaces haven't been popular since I was, like, 6, maybe? But what anchorjenni's explaining is right. Oh, and you mean Kate Spade's have been around longer than a year? Yeah, we're a little slow in the south. I did see someone come into the country club today with the Tiffany's bracelet/necklace on... and I plan to buy a knock-off tomorrow, on tax-free day... so maybe we're finally catching up. Y'all have to understand, too, that I'm only aware of one Tiffany's anywhere near here... in Charlotte... and it's closed every time I go there (not like I actually go there to GO there, but it's in the mall I love). We've finally got a Saks in the same place. But, other than that, we're pretty limited to Ann Taylor, Nine West, Limited, Gap, Banana Republic, Abercrombie, J. Crew, and Guess. And this is at the really ritzy mall. I wouldn't know where to get a pair of Manolo Blahnik's, and the only reason I even know they exist is from watching Sex and the City. So, yeah, we still wear sorority beads... 5 or so years late. But maybe the Tiffany's bracelets will catch on?

shawnna256 08-03-2002 11:56 PM

we don't do the bead thing..but we do carry bags with out blocks on them. when i first went through they were called "shack sacs"...for shackin up. It was sorta cute...but extreamly degrading.

by hte way...what are these beads?????

OHHHH thoooossee beads....yeah they were popular in high school.

CarolinaDG 08-06-2002 11:43 PM

OK, y'all, I finally found the picture of what I've been talking about this whole time... THESE are sorority beads:

thanx carolina dg!

Alright, NOW I know what you're talking about. Thanks CarolinaDG. :) I think I have a necklace like that from high school. Maybe I'll dig it out and start a trend.;)

phisigsigchic 08-07-2002 10:08 AM

Over in RU its all about the "knock off" tiffany bracelet and necklace. One of my sisters even have her bracelet engraved with our letters on the heart and its totally cute! Tons of silver jewelry is worn also. Also the kate spade hand bags (even though those are so expensive). Sometimes, and I hate to say this, people come to the campus and sell ones that "have fallen off the truck" if ya know what I mean (wow I sound like tony soprano or something). Well I bought one of those for myself and my big! But those are the major trends here.

I was randomly looking around ebay and found an ebay seller who sells sterling silver necklaces (and matching earrings) with the silver greek-lettered beads. They aren't Tiffany's, but they make a really cute set :)

CarolinaDG 09-26-2002 03:37 PM

They sell ours over anchor trader... the ones with beads with the engraved circle, and also the tiffany-style bracelets with an engraved heart. I dunno if y'all have an equivalent to anchor trader (I'm sure y'all do, though... even my service sorority had a small version).

I can make GLO jewelry with silver or pewter greek letters. I keep ZTA stuff in stock, but can make for anyone. Contact me via PM or EM if interested.

My personal web site is http://www.penguintrax.com

texas*princess 09-26-2002 04:24 PM

CarolinaDG, yep, Deltasig has their own jewelry provider, and they also have the Tiffany-style toggle necklaces that you can put the greek letters on them! I think those are so cute! Sometimes it's hard finding really cute jewelry since it is a co-ed fraternity! :p

PnguinTrax, you have some amazing styles of jewelry on your site!!!

I don't think I've seen those on any California sorority girls... can a west-coast sister verify?

DeltaGammaRocks 12-05-2002 06:53 AM

ummm yea... haven't seen those here either... hahha

i think its all about the tiffany bracelets (half of my chap has the heart and half has the return to tiffanys circle one)...

and almost everyone has the open floating heart...

it's funny now you mention it.. i never quite realized...

almost everyone has a tiffany's item on.. as well as a kate spade/guess/prada bag.

i dunno if it this is everywhere.. but alot of sorority girls here tie ribbons in their hair in a pony tail too..

sdidavide 12-05-2002 12:47 PM

I do not know where I have been but I thought that Tiffanys just came out with the bracelet last January or around Christmas time. At least that is when they got it in the chicago store. I wish I would have know that everyone had it, I just bought one because I thought that it was different and casual enough to wear with jeans and a sweater. I love tiffany's jewlery that no one has yet.

ZTAngel 12-05-2002 01:47 PM

Sorority beads aren't big at my school. In fact, I don't think I've seen anyone wearing them. The Tiffany's heart bracelet and necklace is really big though. Right after Reese Witherspoon wore it in Legally Blonde it seemed like every sorority girl on my campus had it.

juniorgrrl 12-06-2002 02:35 AM

The Tiffany bracelet is just starting to hit at LSU. I got mine last year for my birthday; I had a fake for a year before that and I was the only one that I noticed with it.

I did the Fake Spade and knockoff heart bracelet in late 2000/early 2001. I got the real things for my birthday last year (although I went with the plain circle tag and the KS Claire just to be a little bit different).

Nearly 2 years after having my fake Sam, I'm starting to see them pop up around here.

I got the Elsa Peretti open heart last Christmas. So far, I'm the only one around here with it :p

Has anyone else noticed that Lizzie McGuire wears the heart bracelet/necklace, as well as the Elsa Peretti open heart? I always thought it was a bit much for a 12 year old to be sporting that much Tiffany's

Shark In Skirt 12-06-2002 07:39 PM

Hmm, I can't say I'm a big fan of the silver bead necklace... Almost every girl I know (although, remarkably, not too many of my sisters, and if so, they don't really wear them often) has the Tiffany's heart and bracelet set.

I also like the Elsa Perretti open heart necklace. Very simple and elegant.

XOXO,
Annie.

chioprincess 12-07-2002 03:47 PM

hmmm

I absolutely LOVE Tiffanny's. I am in my store in Tampa so often that I was even offered a job. My first Tiffany's was when I was 12, I got this star bracelet.. which they discontinued (sad) and I have been collecting ever since. I love Elsa Peretti design, the open heart is my favorite! when my ex boyfriend broke up with me I went to Tiffany's and bought it to symbolize my new start (and broken heart). I wear it all the time, and of course have the Return to Tiffany's dog collar thingy. The big thing now is the Diamonds by the inch. It's five diamonds on a necklace, I just got mine for my 21st from my parents and I have noticed people wearing them now. As far as purses and that stuff goes, Coach and Louis is very big here and of course with the matching shoes. However people love to wear fake here, which is funny becuase some of them are just too rediculously fake you just want to laugh!

Just some insight! :D

Sorority Italian Charms

On a related subject, there are now officially licensed sorority Italian charms. I bought them at www.carinacharms.com, put "Greek Life" in the SEARCH box in the upper left to view them all. They have about a dozen sororities, including AOPi, AChiO, ADPi, Alpha Xi, Chi Omega, DG, Tri Delt, Kappa Delta, Phi Mu, Gamma Phi, Pi Phi and Sigma Kappa. $20 each. More sororities to come, Carina says, and some fraternity Italian charms on the way also. It's a great site for Italian charms. These are the flat Italian charms that do not dangle, so you can wear them at work or school and they don't get in the way. I'm a Gamma Phi, and this site also has a pink carnation, crescent moon, lamp of learning and more. It also has a lot of college logo charms. I got a Cal Berkeley Italian charm here. Enjoy!

Perfect... this website is just what I wanted.

Glitter650 01-28-2004 02:29 PM

I work at Carina ! My boss is a Gamma Phi, so that would be why there are so many Gamma Phi symbols available.. (beside the fact we have one of the largest selections of charms in California) If you order you should write HI GLITTER650 in the special instructions! I"ll probably be one of the people filling your order :D

MiAngel711 01-28-2004 04:23 PM

just my two cents

Its funny how this Tiffany toggle is such a phenomenon! Some parts of the country find it as standard issue and others know of it but own the knock off and there are some places that are just ebing to ride this wave. I think the reason why this trend is a few years long is because the style is so classic and versitile.

As for my experience, they were big in my high school in Wisconsin (circa 99-00)...and supposedly WE are backwater yolkes who all live on farms.

Alphie1851 01-29-2004 07:46 PM

i see more vera bradley bags on campus than i do kate spade bags

Xylochick216 01-29-2004 10:26 PM

The silver beads are HUGE here at Elon. A ton of girls have them, and I know of one chapter on campus where every girl has a set. Vera is also huge here. The new patterns are adorable!

AXWhoah 01-30-2004 12:01 AM

Maybe it's just me but I think the "Vera" bags look like diaper bags. The whole floral motiff is way to mommy for me....Signature series from Coach and Dooney and Burke are far more popular here...and Tiffany's is big here also. I personally love anything from Elsa Perretti especially my open heart toggle bracelet :D
