Problems with mixer titles???
 

I was wondering if anyone has had problems with the administration giving them a hard time with party/mixer themes. Like last year we had a pimps and ho's party and we got in trouble because its offensive to women. So then later that semester we had a white trash social and got in trouble again because its offensive to southeners, and then this last spring we had a 60's party and some people saw pictures of people wearing afro's, and a guy wearing a weed shirt and had a fake blunt in his mouth and they said it was racially offensive and promotes drug use. So we basically can't do ANYTHING at this school with a theme because its going to be said offensive. Does anyone else have these problems at their school??? KA isn't allowed to have their old south events on campus either because of the same thing. I just think our school is WAY too PC.

Another thing...do you guys notice how people bash greeks saying we don't \do jack for campus, yet when the University has homecoming or some campus event they always call on us to do it...and NO other student org does it or does a half ass job??? I've always wondered if we all banneded ourselves from doing anything for the university they would see how stupid they are and how much they need us. Maybe then they would bend over backwards to help us instead of harm us. Imagine alumni coming to homecoming and all they see in the parade is the RSA float and the chess club float....bet the university would be sh*ting a brick then :-)

I wouldn't suggest going on strike- we tried that, and they just cancelled the parade. There hasn't been one in four years.

As for offensive party themes, that's the stupidest crap I've ever heard. Pimps and ho's I can see some problems with, but I'm white trash, and I'm not offended. That's some kinda PC school you got there.

Now back to the topic at hand. My sorority has never personally had an issue with mixer titles. I think the only one Greek Affairs had a problem with was Pimp's & Ho's...and even then I think they just asked us to tone it down a bit. I don't think boycotting university sponsored events like homecoming will keep you in the good graces of the university. If we did that here...I think they would honestly just say "oh well...their loss" then cancel the event. In most cases, I think we're damned if we do...damned if we don't.

Actually, UNF Sigma Chi, I kind of asked the same question in another thread under SOCIAL, where I wondered if a Pimps and Hoes Party was disrepectful. Maybe universities have become too "Politically Correct", but campus life isn't what it was 20 or even 10 years ago. Your school is not the only one that has this situation-it happens at my school, and at schools all across the country. And if it hasn't affected a certain school yet-believe me, it will.

Campuses these days are more diverse than ever-racially, ethnically, sexually, and socio-economically, and issues that were not really addressed previously are now in the forefront. Underage drinking, binge drinking, date rape, racial and ethnic and social sterotyping- these are some of the topics that are important on campus, and unfortunately, by having parties like these, doesn't reflect positively on Greek life in the eyes of some, because they may have the misguided notion that we (GLO members) contribute to these things. And let's face it, we ARE an easy scapegoat because those who are not us, will NEVER understand what it is like to be Greek. So it's always, "There goes those damn (insert fraternity/sorority here) again. They are all so (rich/blonde/stupid/jockish/preppy/stuck-up...you get the idea)".

But with that, it doesn't mean that a fraternity/sorority can't have a theme party without offending someone or some group-just be creative in what you call it, and how it is advertised. I mean, one fraternity on my campus had an "Age of Aquarius" party- very San Francisco/Haight-Ashbury/ 1967ish, which was well attended, and no one was offended, even though the original time of the "Summer of Love" was full of drug use!

So, hang in there UNF Sigma Chi...I know that you and your brothers will be able to have fun DESPITE the best intentions of the university. Don't boycott, but when you graduate (and you will graduate, right?), and you start getting those letters in the mail that start, "Dear Alumnus..." , asking you to contribute to the school's endowment, tell them that you're giving your money to where it belongs-the Sigma Chi chapter of UNF!

Our school doesn't give us grief about anything... Probably the most objectionable party we have is the St Patrick's Day "Get Lucky" Party... Pike has the "White Trash Trailer Bash" and no one says a word.

Our school pretty much stays out of our hair. All the Greeks on our campus do whatever they want.

I remember one of our chapters had a problem with the Pimps and Hos mixer, so they named it something else that was cute, but off the top of my head, I can't remember it. As for UNF and Jojo...may you live happily ever after :D

We have had a "Ghetto mixer" for many years-you dress up in ghetto clothes-kind of like a pimps and hoes theme but a little different. Before the mixer a couple of our new girls were outside our student center and a member of the campus NAACP saw them and told them that they were offended. We had to right an apology to them to put in the newspaper. I really didnt feel like we did anything offensive, but now we have decided to not have that themed mixer anymore.

This might be a stupid question, but why on earth are you even telling the administration what your mixer theme is? :confused:

At LSU...we're required to register all sorority and fraternity functions with Greek Affairs. Otherwise...it'll be hell to pay. They've really cracked down on us in the last few years after the Ben Wynn experience.

I do understand the registered party concept, but I thought that just entailed saying "party with ABC sisters and XYZ brothers, Thursday 9-1." I didn't and don't think you should have to tell them your theme - why would they care if it's a private function?

Ya we have to tell greek affairs what we do. Plus sometimes they see pictures from people who took them at our parties and someone will see it and go ummm who had this party. So now we just have a party. No themes decorations or anything because its such a pain to find a theme that isn't offensive to anyone. Actually most people just like the party here and hate the theme parties now.

In fact, our reference was an artistic one based on a common theme portrayed in 70's type shows such as Shaft . . .

. . . no offense was meant towards anyone that considers themselves to be Trailer Park White Trash and no aspersions were meant againt people that hail from rural backgrounds, low socio economic status, tacky dress sense, and believe that guest appearances on Jerry Springer make them into a celebrity. (Author's note: Take your medication . . . and you will stop having all these wierd ass problems)

Ghetto parties . . .

. . . we intended no reference to people that grow up believing that being born in South Central LA (Compton) makes you automatically hard core and cool; think that dealing drugs is the end all proffession; idolize people that have criminal records; and like to lie about where they come from to make it seem as if they were poorer and from a harder core neighborhood (Author's note: I actually know people that do this).

In fact we were just making a parody of MTV's tendency to take kids from suburbia, give them jail house clothing, goatees, body jewelry, heavy but often dated slang, and pay them lots of money to be examples for all the other wannabee gangsters living fairly well off lives.

The ending:

I just wandered over here, so here are my two cents. This is just meant as an insight for those who are not familiar with UNF; no offense is meant.

Most of you probably are not familiar with the University of North Florida. It's not like other State University System of Florida universities, like FSU or UF. It's smaller, more commuter based and not very student friendly. For a state university, it has a very small greek presence, partly because of student apathy. The average UNF student goes to class, goes home and tries not to think of ways to get involved in activities.

I'm sure that wasn't meant to be a cut on UNFSigmaChi. We trade some lighthearted insults now and then, but it's alot of fun and he's as serious about his fraternity as I am about mine.

We've never met, but I would like to someday. He's a good guy.

I just didn't want anyone to take me the wrong way and hate me because I was being nosey. I just stumbled over here and I noticed it was about a local school that I attended for a while. :)

LOL!!! A "Ghetto Mixer" party??? Please tell me more about this! What does this entail??? FUBU wear and drive-by's and and guys you call "my baby's daddy" and food stamps and welfare checks, not to mention smoking crack and drinking a forty on the corner while the music of NWA or Snoop Dogg plays in the background??? Maybe you could learn about it by watching "South Central" or "Boyz in the Hood". What other stereotype did I leave out? Maybe the bar could be a liquor store run by Koreans! I just cannot believe that no one would think that SOMEONE would be offended by this. Now, I don't know your sorority, so forgive me if I am wrong, but I know that I would be offended as an African-American if I saw a bunch of Caucasian women trying to be "ghetto". To a lot of people, living in a ghetto is not by choice, and is definitely not fun. Now, if you actually had a "Ghetto Mixer" in a ghetto-that would be impressive! I would pay to see that!

But thank you so much for sharing that with me...I hope that if you haven't ever been a ghetto, that one day you are able to see what one is really like. The reason being so that you will perhaps understand why someone would think that making light of that situation is offensive.

ahhh... the famous ghetto mixer. that was a difficult theme for me. but to tell the story... we had a ghetto themed mixer last semester. some of our girls got really into it. (my grand sis teased her hair so big it did look like a fro.) and we have a lot of culturally diverse women and so did the fraternity we mixed with. about 10 minutes before the mixer was supposed to end, the cops showed up. not just one cop car like it usually happens... but 6! they were lined up and down the street. we had the mixer in someone's house in a quiet neighborhood so i am assuming that the neighbors thought there was a raid of the pink bandana gang or something. (i don't mean to offend anyone... our colors are pink and blue so that seemed to be a prominent color combo at the mixer.) but it was just a simple controlled party with about 60 people. but since the theme was ghetto... people could have thought otherwise. i just thought the experience was funny. it's something i will never forget. but that is really the only run in with authority we have had at a mixer.
