Greek Intramurals
HOw much emphasis is taken on Intramural sports At your school? They aren't that much here, basically anyone who can show up to the games plays, if you win it's no big deal. But I know our UCLA chapter celebrated a bunch after winning football.

Bigg Deal
Our school is small, and the kids that go to it are very into athletics. We put a whole lot of work into ours with parctices, play books, and huge teams where we have a rotating bench, and starters.....Its a big deal, but at most Southern Schools it really big. The whole thing is about bragging rights, and it also helps in rushing people......We take alot of pride from winning Greek Week every year since 97, and losing one major sports event in the last two years...... the only thing that matters is that we continue to win volleyball...

Better hope
Better hope TKE doesnt come back on campus........

And TKE IS on campus, they just aren't in IFC. |
At my University, we play some hard-core intramurals. Both fraternities and sororities. It's one of the reasons why the different greeks on campus are so incredibly competitive. Of course we try to have fun with songs and cheers, but with injuries and insults it can get rough out there. Every greek org. knows that having the reputation of "intramural champions" will not only boost your rush, but will give all its members the sweet smell of victory, unity, and college pride. So its something that most everyone is willing and commited to play hard for.

At Nebraska, we have one of the top IM programs in the country with something like 80 different sports/competitions. The importance placed on IM varies from house to house. Some houses have people at everything, while other houses don't care and end up forfeiting nearly every game.
Luckily the Campus Rec people recognized this and a couple years ago formed divisions (Red, White, Black, Gray). The system is now like the one used in soccer in foreign countries. the top team in one division moves up to the next division, and the last place team moves down one division...however the winner of the Red division is the IFC IM champ. Really the competition for IM champ comes down between Pike, ATO and Phi Psi. Pike has way more people so they never miss anything, while ATO sends their pledges to things like Badminton and horseshoes, and phi psi somehow manages to stay in the hunt by actually winning outright the things they compete in, while giving up points for participation. For the rest of the houses, like say in the White division (the 2nd division), which is the division my house is in...the chapters compete in the major sports, and usually hold their own. We at Beta have a few sports that we take seriously and always have strong showings. As you get into the Black and Gray divisions the houses put fewer teams together for each sport, and are far more apathetic to the whole IM thing. |
Keep Watchin out
Thats what I meant when they get back in IFC......

At UBC intramurals is huge and the Greeks always make up a large part of it - we even have our own division.

Yeah I see what you mean....
But TKE at SDSU doens't WANT back in IFC, and I KINDA don't blame them. |
Off the top of my head:
Missouri-Mizzou - Beta has won Intramurals 29 times in the past 37 years, never finishing lower than third place. Oklahoma - Betas have won the Greek Intramural Trophy fourteen times over the past thirty-four years. Oklahoma State - Currently, Beta has won the intramural sports championships at OSU 9 of the last 10 years and 79 of the last 100 years. Westminster, MO - Betas won intramurals 10 out of the 11 past years. I know our Kansas Chapters have always been strong, and have owned the Intramural Cups for a long time...I just cannot find the info. right now. |
Central Oklahoma
Intramurals are important but we could never field a good team for anything. We always do well with individual events though.
It's not much of an issue during recruitment from what I have seen though. |

you might re-check Oklahoma State. The Betas were kicked off campus several years ago, the house boarded up. They have just began to colonize this past spring. So, it is unlikely they have won IMs of late... |
Herr Conard,
You are correct. I was just quoting their website from the past years. They have since been kicked off and recolonized this past year. Give them a year or two and they will re-gain their status as number one....guaranteed. Thanks for the insight!!! |

will rise again to prominence. My informants there tell me they had tremendous alumni support and are gonna raze the old house (not so old, either), build one new. TKE was thinking about returning to OSU, could not get their act together, and when Beta decided to return, TKE backed off. I never did think this was a good Greek campus although some fine chapters there thrived. I am sure Beta will do well. TKE did re-colonize at OU. Beta and Pike seem to have the best techniques at the act of returning while the rest of us sit in awe, not learning and simply scratching our nuts. Regards, Erik P Conard,. tke |
You've got to be kidding. I've always been somewhat in awe of the Greek system at OSU. Most of the chapters over there have thrived. I think Theta Chi closed up there pretty recently (numbers)... But other than that I don't know of a single weak chapter.

The big intramural rivalry on our campus is usually between Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Chi. Sigma Chi will have somebody participate in every event, and the Pikes end up winning a lot of events. Being a smaller house, there are a few events that we never participate in, and a few others that we play in but aren't very good :( However, there are a couple of sports that we haven't lost for a while, such as billiards, bowling, and foosball. All in all, we do well enough in the events we do play to finish about in the middle of the pack standings wise.

OSU--strong system?

Re: betas at okla state
Yes, you are right. The OKState Betas have an incredible alumni backing. It seems as though the "gray hairs" are crawling out from under rocks and falling out of trees to help this group succeed. In fact, if they raise enough money, they will tear down their current boarded up house and build, quite possibly, the nicest fraternity house in North America.
Geez, for the time being, because the Beta house was basically destroyed from the last group of guys, they ended up buying the ZBT house to hold them over......must be nice! Quote:

I wouldn't say they exactly hold a candle to Missouri... But not many people do. To call it weak though seems to indicate to me that you either haven't been there or haven't been there in a long time. |
I'm going to sound arrogant here, but we win intramurals every year and the competition usually isn't too terribly close...it really sucked this year that TKE wasn't allowed to participate due to there ignorance at their controversial halloween party because they are the only ones who ever contend, and generally it's somewhat of a battle...somewhat...we'll look forward to them getting back on campus this year.
We've won every soccer tournament from the IM tourney, to SK "Kick in the Grass" to Greek Week 3v3...We lost our first Flag Football match in like 9 years or something ridiculous this past year to TKE..... Some Fraternities don't really even go out though which sucks because it takes away the achievement of the victory... Cory |
Re: Greek Intramurals
We don't have intramural sports :( The only time we compete against other Greeks at our school is during Greek Week.
