Cutting or pledging a group for dumb reasons

So many Greeks have told me that they cut or even pledged a certain GLO for dumb reasons that I wondered if you'd heard of any!

For instance, if I'd stayed in my hometown and rushed, I probably would've pledged a certain GLO because I loved its flower (hey, I was 16). To heck with what the members were like!

The neighborhood ditz announced that she didn't want to be a Tri Delt because the three triangles on the shirt didn't look like "real" Greek letters and she wanted people to know she was Greek. (Her grades ended up being too low to rush.)

I know a college sophomore who doesn't want to pledge one group because she can't stand their colors.

Oh yeah, and when I rushed there was a rushee who really wanted Chi O and when they cut her, she pledged Alpha Chi Omega so she could tell the folks back home she was "A Chi O" and not be lying. That had always been her game plan, to only consider those 2 and none of the other 12, and this was before she'd even met anyone in any of the groups on campus!

You get the idea! Does anyone else have a ridiculous story?

33girl 07-16-2002 10:10 PM

hee hee...

one of the girls in my dorm liked DZ but she almost didn't pledge because, as she said, "Their colors are so PREPPY!" She was more the rock star/biker babe type. Of course, she ended up joining and loving it, pink & green and all. :D

Not only do I know of one, I'm personally guilty of one on the cut side of things.

I wasn't comfortable at all with the public symbols of one of the chapters on my campus. Of course, I was a youngster :) and really quite naive about everything greek! Still, my discomfort with some of the symbols (and phobia about one particular symbol, believe it or not) did play a big part in my thought processes when looking at the different sororities on my campus.

I have had many people at school say they wouldn't rush ZTA because it "didn't LOOK greek", Sigma Kappa because "the colors were too preppy", and Chi-O because they "don't look good in red". Yeesh...

ROWDYsister 07-16-2002 11:00 PM

I cut a certain house because I was thinking about how strange it would be to go back home and tell people which house I was pledging and them saying, "Like the rock station on the radio?" I also couldn't see myself with their mascot and that print.

I cut this other popular house because the girl who rushed me had fake eyeglasses and she talked about it for longer than 30 seconds and I thought it was too weird since it wasn't like a costume party. She had a collection of fake glasses, to make her look smarter.

In my guide where I wrote comments I actually wrote for one house during Round 1, "I was so tired, I didn't really care." Clouded judgement.

pbpck 07-17-2002 12:04 AM

When you are supposed to make a decision within days of meeting a mass of blonde bubbly spirited philanthropic girls, who all have study hours and sisterhoods and brag about some greek award or another, it get really hard to differentiate, especially the first night.

That said, I kept my rush booklet and in retrospect, I admit my comments were awfully petty for some parties.

- I didn't want to wear Christmas colors year round.
- A girl I met in one house had such clumpy mascara. She was invading my personal space so intensely that I became transfixed on the fact that her lashes were actualy sticking together when she would blink.

I was naive and had to cut houses every night. Everyone was nice, so I had to start somewhere!

As a side note, I love DZ's colors and can only wish ours were as "preppy." :)

ShaedyKD 07-17-2002 12:32 AM

When I was in high school, my best friend's older sister was president of Tri Delta at UF, and that was really the only sorority I knew of until I got information about Greek life at orientation. Then I went by the little bits of information that are published in the Greek directory.
For example, I don't like the color pink and the anchor/sailor hat thing was a little bit much, so DG was not for me. I thought that KD's olive green and pearl white were ugly colors, and I thought that SDT was strictly for Jewish girls.
Of course, during rush week, all of these thoughts went down the drain as I got to meet sisters, and learned more about each organization. I went in thinking I wanted to be a Tri Delt, then an ADPi, since my new best friend was a legacy there, and ended up pledging "Loyalty forever to the green and white!"

dggirly 07-17-2002 02:03 AM

I had the problem when rushing where I had to drop houses every night. So i decided that I wanted to be in a larger house so the 2 on my campus that were much smaller then the rest I dropped because there were not enough girls. Then the next night I dropped another house because of their nickname(which I now find it silly, the nickname was not even bad I just thought it was stupid). Then, I started to become really superficial and I started cuting houses because of peopels shoes(yes I know that is really superficial)!!! Looking back on my rush experience I know I was not choosing wisely lucky I pledged the house that was right for me!

Actually, the reason I pledged Delta Gamma was the girl I was talking to on day 1, when she asked if I had a job and when I told her I had never worked she didn't make me feel stupid and spoiled like a lot of the girls in the other houses made me feel. Also we talked about how neither of us wanted to go to a small farm town school because we didn't like the smell of cows, whih is probably the stupidest thing I have ever had a conversation about during rush but it was just so quirky that I loved that I felt like I really connected with the girls, and she had jimmy choo shoes on, as you can tell I am a big shoe freak!!

TrojanGirl 07-17-2002 02:17 AM

My own mother tells the story of prefing KD over Phi Mu because "I look horrible in Pink, and I just could not immagine wearing pink for the next 4 years. Even if my best friend WAS a Phi mu!"

I will admit, I like piphi's colors more than most other groups.. but I am just predjudice!

My (biological) sister cut Delta Gamma during rush at her school because she didn't like the name. She said something about it being a DZ wannabe sorority.

And wasn't SHE shocked when I explained to her that they've been around a lot longer than WE have!

sfasammy 07-17-2002 02:54 AM

Hmmm...this reminds me of a relative of mine who decided to take up a religious life and become a nun. She chose to join one order over another because the habits (the clothes nuns wear) looked "cuter" at the one she ended up joining.

DigitalAngel126 07-17-2002 03:34 AM

i know someone that pledged for a stupid reason...before she learned how many greeks were living in our building, she was runnin' off at the mouth all the time...talking about how she wanted to rush 'so she could say she was in a sorority and that shes a sorority girl'...and she was dumb enough to tell one of our new members (knowing she was a new member) that she 'knew' itd be no problem to get in with us because she knew so many of us (pshhhhhhhh- - - 'knowing' and 'being friends with' are TOTALLY different)...anyhow, this coming fall will be her third or fourth year (i dont remember) and she's rushed EVERY semester she's been in school..needless to say she hasnt even gotten one bid yet...somet people never learn :o

Off topic, but... there's a girl like that at my school too - she was pledging our sorority for a while, but we ended up forcing her to depledge because she lied about some things. Yet she STILL comes to our rush EVERY SEMESTER! I don't know if she thinks if she stays around long enough, that we'll forget that she lied to us or something, but it's rather a running joke...

ZTAMiami 07-17-2002 10:27 AM

ROWDYSister LOL!!!

The day after bid day All the new members were walking around with 'I Love ZTA' buttons and people asked if 94.9 was on campus for the day!

FYI-----94.9 is WZTA-- a rock station here in Miami.

Also, the zebra is Gamma Iota's local macsot. That's just there thing.:)

LeslieAGD 07-17-2002 10:47 AM

I have a good one...

I know a girl who cut Sigma Kappa and Delta Zeta because she thought the "two letter sororities" block letters would make everyone stare at her boobs. The "three letter sororities" block letters would look more "even." :p

maggieaxid 07-17-2002 11:14 AM

OMG! I know a girl who did that too! She said she didn't want a letter on each boob so she dropped the two 3-letter organizations.

And before i rushed, i wrote in my rush notebook thati decided that i liked AZD's colors the most and that two of the GLO's had similar colors and i wanted to stand out....i was so rediculous!

Reading that one was making me laugh hilariously!!

MoWestPhiMu 07-17-2002 12:06 PM

Another good one...

When I was a Rho Chi, (sorry recruitment counselor) I heard a lot of the PNM's saying that they only wanted GLO's that had 3 letters instead of only 2 because "it sounded more greek"...

oh please!

AOX81 07-17-2002 12:36 PM

I remember when I went through rush one of the girls mentioned that she didn't like Phi Sigma Sigma because she thought that the double Sigma looked funny. Some people are just stupid

KappaStargirl 07-17-2002 01:01 PM

One of my sisters (I'll call her Jane) cut DG after second round (of three). In that round, they did a skit and then showed the PNM's all their cute DG paraphernalia. Her host pulled out her Hannah doll and Jane almost ran away screaming...she is TERRIFIED of clowns and anything that resembles them. That night, she cut them.

Although I was pretty sure after round one that I wasn't meant to be a DG, I knew it for certain during round two: My hostess, who was being very nice even though I was having an attack of the stupids and couldn't think of anything to say, showed me her "love book." I don't know if all DG chapters do this, but the one at my school has big sisters take blank books and fill them with fun memories, poems, pictures, etc. and present them to their littles at initiation. I AM THE WORLD'S WORST ARTIST! I was banned from sign-making during my years as an active!! I took one look at that book, told her it was beautiful, which it was, and knew right then and there I was not going to be a DG. The thought of having to make one for my future little sis was not something I could deal with.

We had a couple big boobed sisters in ASA, so the "Sigma" would end up in the valley, so to speak, and we'd have smartass guys saying "nice Alphas." Hey dude, it was funny the first time around but after that it gets old. :p

ShaedyKD 07-17-2002 01:52 PM

About the whole 2 letter vs. 3 letter thing, I also thought it was weird at first to only have 2 letters. But of course, now I am biased and like 2 better than 3! At some greek stores, they charge you by the letter, so only having 2 letters can save you $$$!:D

Having only 2 letters can be an added benefit, especially with all of the shirts that I have had to purchase, and living on a poor college student's budget.:p :D

Hehe, I always thought that... Im a HUGE fan of things being symetrical (I CANT SPELL) and I always looked at my letters and think of ways to make them "more even" - eh, it dosent bother me too much anymore....

CarolinaDG 07-17-2002 05:51 PM

Even though I didn't cut anyone for bad reasons (well, I cut one sorority b/c there was one girl in it that I couldn't stand, and she ended up dropping later on, anyway...) I have a confession to make... to the girl who said that the DG anchor/sailor thing was a bit too much (we don't wear sailor hats at my chapter... they used to, but not anymore).. I'm deathly afraid of our Hannah dolls. They are EVERYWHERE in our chapter room! When we were first new members, we used to call her "psycho doll" because she was like Chuckie... just kind of appeared at the corner of pictures and stuff... YIKES!!! Well, as I pledged and learned the meaning, I fear her a little less, though I do admit, there are only two Hannah dolls in my room (mine and my roommate's), and I use mine to freak my roommate out late at night. I've done it to her so many times, but she's still scared to death when I peek it over the side of the bunk at her. Fun times, DG!

ivysis 07-17-2002 05:52 PM

On the 2 vs. 3 letter thing.... the shorts with letters on the backside are really popular at my old school. Us 2 lettereds have it better because you really cant fit 3 on your butt!

Saturday Night Live

A good friend of mine dropped Tri-Delta because she had seen a SNL clip.

In the sketch, one of the players answered the phone with the line 'Delta Delta Delta can I help yah help yah help yah?' She could NOT get over this, because she said she would never be able to answer the house phone with a straight face!!!

SoProud2BeAnAlphaXi 07-17-2002 08:30 PM

I clearly remember dropping one chapter because their color scheme for one party was light blue + light green. Yuck. That, plus the fact that the person who I talked with for most of the party had on too much eye makeup (although we had a perfectly nice conversation), pushed me over the edge. Wonderful reason, yes? Fortunately, my other accept/regret decisions were more rational.

MUPhiMuKHap 07-17-2002 09:15 PM

Wanted a nickname!!!

Ok this is really stupid, but I just remembered this. When I went through Recruitment I had NO clue about anything having to do with Greek life, therefore my desicions at first were based on some pretty dumb things. So, on our info day, I decided immediately that I didn't like any of the house that couldn't be called by a nickname.

For example, I liked ADPi, Tri Delt, Gamma Phi, Kappa, A Phi, Theta, etc. You get my point. So every sorority on my campus can pretty much go by some kind of nickname like that, except for Sigma Kappa and Phi Mu. They just go by their names, which I didn't like. I wanted a cute nickname damnit! But luckily, I got over that weird thing and look at me now, proud to be a Phi Mu! :D Funny how those things work out. ;)

DeltaSigStan 07-17-2002 09:31 PM

One of my bros transfered from Cal State Hayward, where they have Delta Chi (we don't) Anyway, he said he talked to one of the potential new members back when he was at Hayward, and the guy said he didn't want to be in DX because it had too much of a resembelence to the DX that was in the WWF, and the guy absolutly HATED wrestling.

I'm deathly afraid of our Hannah....
LoL...We had a joke for a while about evil hannahs here, too. I read a scarey story once about an evil raggedy ann doll, so I told everyone about it. Then we had a date function at Halloween Horror Nights (at Universal Studios), and while there, we saw a parade with a lady dressed up as an evil raggedy ann! So we always joked about our "scarey mascot". But in actuality I love our Hannah...she's so cute!

dggirly 07-18-2002 02:04 AM

I like Hannah, I don't think she is scary at all! Didn't any of you play with dolls when you were a little girl? Everyone in my house gets a Hannah doll from their big sis, and this one big sis got her little a gigantic Hannah i am talking like 3 feet tall, it was a little scary like any other doll that is that size but we all joke and say it is Hannah on steroriods! No one is scared of her! In fact i have never heard anyone not liking Hannah or the anchor. In fact many girls relly like that about our house during rush and always tell us how they want an anchor for their wall as well!

jharb 07-18-2002 02:15 AM

I know before coming to butler I wanted to rush so I looked at all the websites of the chapters at BU and I didn't like the Pi Phi website (it was the old style one) and I thought that the chapter must be bad if it had a jank website. I remember I wanted to be a DG just because there was a journalist in their famous alums and I was like wow! a serious sorority! When I visited butler to spend the night the girl I stayed with wasn't greek but she was friends with a lot of Alpha Phis so I thought that it was going to be Phi all the way for me. It's funny looking back over this. I also remember not wanting to be in one house because the girl went, "ooohhhh...how HORRIBLE" when I said I went to an all girls catholic school for high school.

maggieaxid 07-18-2002 08:53 AM

A friend of mine dropped Phi Mu because they had someone dressed up in a giant pink pather costume (their local mascot) and she is dealthy afraid of giant animal costumes!

meliss 07-18-2002 09:57 AM

I'm kind of embarrassed reading all these dumb reasons cause i think them sometimes! I'm rushing in the spring and there's so many sororities at purdue, i'm dying to narrow it down!

I don't know much about any of the reputations except for a couple, so it's turned into cute colors vs. cute mascots vs. cute letters. I'm not sure if 'prettiest houses' is considered a dumb reason, but considering the fact that is has NOTHING to do with the actual sisters is probably is!

Well, i know in the back of my mind these are not the things that matter, but its just some thoughts to enetertain! we'll see when rush comes around... :) :D ;)

justamom 07-18-2002 10:41 AM

This is sooooo CRAZY, because I remember myself using the same "l0gIc" for cutting houses that MANY have listed on this board-from colors and mascots to pins! also bought into the "reps" and rhymes, didn't want ANYone refering to me as easy or such.

For most of these reasons mentioned, nothing can be done. I guess what we, as alums, should do is educate our OWN kids and promote a healthy respect for all GLOs.
But... if you don't look good in green, who can blame ya?;)

shhhhh-I also thought 3 letters were better than 2!
