Creed

I was just wondering, what is your fraternity or sorority's creed, motto, or principles that your chapter stands for and you as an individual try to follow and aspire to be? The reason why I am asking is because some chapters at our school as well as those here don't take it seriously. If you can post your creed that would be great.

AlphaGam1019 07-15-2002 11:14 PM

TexasAGD, what chapter are you from? ;)

The creed of Zeta Tau Alpha:

To realize that within our grasp, in Zeta Tau Alpha, lies the opportunity to learn those things which will ever enrich and ennoble our lives; to be true to ourselves, to those within and without our circle; to think in terms of all mankind and our service in the world; to be steadfast, strong, and clean of heart and mind, remembering that since the thought is father to the deed, only that which we would have manifested in our experience should be entertained in thought; to find satisfaction in being, rather than seeming, thus strengthening in us the higher qualities of the spirit; to prepare for service and learn the nobility of serving, thereby earning the right to be served; to seek understanding that we might gain true wisdom; to look for the good in everyone; to see beauty, with its enriching influence; to be humble in success, and without bitterness in defeat; to have the welfare and harmony of the Fraternity at heart, striving ever to make our lives a symphony of high ideals, devotion to the right, the good, and the true, without a discordant note; remembering always that the foundation precept of Zeta Tau Alpha was love, "the greatest of all things."
~Shirley Kreasan Strout

I really love our creed and I really do try to live by it every day!

The Creed of Lambda Chi Alpha

We believe in Lambda Chi Alpha, and its traditions, principles, and ideals. The crescent is our symbol, pure, high, ever growing, and the cross is our guide: denoting service, sacrifice, and even suffering and humiliation before the world, bravely endured if need be, in following that ideal.
May we have faith in Lambda Chi Alpha and passion for its welfare. May we have hope for the future of Lambda Chi Alpha and strength to fight for its teachings. May we have pure hearts that we may approach the ideal of pergect brotherly love.

We also have two open mottoes,

Chalepa Ta Kala: Naught without Labor, or That which is worthwhile is difficult.

Vir Quisque Vir: Every man a man

The SHORT Sigma Nu Creed
(there's a long version as well)

To believe in the life of love,
To walk in the way of honor,
To serve in the light of truth.

This is the life, the way and the light of Sigma Nu.
This is the Creed of our fraternity.

the PHI KAPPA PSI creed!

I believe that Phi Kappa Psi is a brotherhood of honorable men, courteous and cultured, who pledge throughout their lives to be generous, compassionate, and loyal comrades;

I believe that I am honor bound to strive manfully for intellectual, moral, and spiritual excellence; to help and forgive my Brothers; to discharge promptly all just debts; to give aid and sympathy to all who are less fortunate;

I believe that I am honor bound to strengthen my character and deepen my integrity ; to counsel and guide my Brothers who stray from their obligations; to respect and emulate my Brothers who practice moderation in their manners and morals; to be ever mindful that loyalty to my Fraternity should not weaken loyalty to my college, but rather increase devotion to it, to my country, and to my God;

I believe that to all I meet, wherever I go, I represent not only Phi Kappa Psi, but indeed the spirit of all fraternities; thus I must ever conduct myself so as to bring respect and honor not to myself alone, but also to my Fraternity; To the fulfillment of these beliefs, of these ideals, in the noble perfection of Phi Kappa Psi, I pledge my life and my sacred honor.

the line in red is my favorite...

Alpha Phi Creed

I believe in my Fraternity.

I believe in the friendships formed
in the springtime of my youth.

I believe in its high ideals
which lift me up beyond myself.

I believe in its earnest drive for good scholarship,
moral character, and genuine culture.

I believe in it as a shrine of
international sisterhood wherein
I may find love and loyalty,
sympathy and understanding inspiration
and opportunity.

I believe in it as a creator of good citizenship,
helping me to do my work well,
to live in harmony with others, and
to serve my country and to trust in God.

I believe in my Fraternity.
I believe in Alpha Phi.

Sigma Chi Creed:

I believe in fairness, decency and good manners. I will endeavor to retain the spirit of youth. I will try to make my college, The Sigma Chi Fraternity, and my own chapter more honored by all men and women, and more beloved and honestly respected by our own brothers. I say these words in all sincerity; that Sigma Chi has given me favor and distinction. That the bonds of our fellowship is recipricol. And that I will endeavor to so build myself and so conduct myself that I will ever be a credit to Our Fraternity.
George Ade, Purdue 1887

Public Motto: In Hoc Signo Vinces In this sign you will conquer

Purpose: The purpose of this Fraternity shall be to cultivate and maintain the high ideals of Friendship, Justice and Learning upon which Sigma Chi was founded.

DWAlphaGam 07-16-2002 09:19 AM

I'm going to post our purpose, even though you obviously already know it, TexasAGD. I think it's beautiful enough to want to share it along with everyone else's. :)

To gain understanding that wisdom may be vouchsafed to me.

To develop and prize health and vigor of body.

To cultivate acquaintance with many whom I meet.

To cherish Friendships with but a chosen Few and to study the perfecting of those Friendships.

To welcome the opportunity of contributing to the world's work in the community where I am placed because of the joy of service thereby bestowed and the talent of leadership multiplied.

To honor my home, my country, my religious faith.

To hold truth inviolable, sincerity essential, kindness invaluable.

To covet beauty in environment, manner, word and thought.

To possess high ideals and to attain somewhat unto them.

This shall be my PURPOSE that those who know me may esteem ALPHA GAMMA DELTA for her attainments, revere her for her purposes and love her for her womanhood.

phimualumnc 07-16-2002 09:39 AM

Here is Phi Mu's Creed. I just returned from our 47th convention and 150th Anniversary Celebration and heard 800+ Phi Mu's saying it in unison - what an awesome experience.

The Creed of Phi Mu

To lend to those fortunate a helping hand .

To think of God as a protector and guide of us all.

To keep forever sacred the memory of those we have loved and lost.
To be to others what we would they would be to us.

To keep our lives gentle, merciful and just,

Thus being true to the womanhood of love.

To walk in the way of honor, guarding the purity of our thoughts and deeds.

Being steadfast in every duty small or large.

Believing that our given word is binding.

Striving to esteem the inner man above culture, wealth or pedigree.

Being honorable, courteous, tender,

Thus being true to the womanhood of honor.

To serve in the light of truth avoiding egotism, narrowness, and scorn.

To give freely of our sympathies,

To reverence God as our Maker, striving to serve Him in all things.

To minister to the needy and unfortunate.

To practice day by day love, honor truth.

Thus keeping true to the meaning, spirit and reality of Phi Mu.

reading everyone's creeds gives me goosebumps :)

Delta Omicron's Creed:

This truth comes to us more and more, the longer we live, that in what field, or in what uniform, or with what aims we do our duty, matters very little; or even what our duty is great or small, splendid or obscure, only to find our duty, certainly and somewhere, somehow do it faithfully, makes us good, strong, happy, and useful, and tunes our lives into some feeble echo of the life of God.

~Phillips Brooks

The Object of Alpha Omicron Pi

The Object of this fraternity shall be to stand at all times for character, dignity, scholarship, and college loyalty; to strive for and support the best interests of the colleges and universities in which chapters are installed; and in no way to disregard, injure or sacrifice those interests for the sake of the prestige or advancement of the fraternity or any of its chapters.

The Preamble of the Constitution of
Delta Sigma Phi

The Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity in convention assembled
declares and affirms the following principles:

That the belief in God is essential to our welfare.

That the loyalty to the constituted authority of our nations
and their subdivisions is a cardinal virtue of our brotherhood,
the pledged faith of which shall never be broken; and that our
brotherhood, receiving the blessings of liberty, education and
Fraternity, shall ever support, foster and defend our universities,
colleges and school systems, founded under the dispensation
of our governments and constituting the bulwarks of democracy
for us, for our posterity and for all men.

That the sanctity of the home and the sacredness of the family
bond, the hearthstone of our enlightened civilization, and the
chivalry of man toward woman, shall ever be maintained and protected
by us, not only for ourselves and our posterity, but also for the
good of all mankind.

That a symmetrical culture, a fraternal communion among the
colleges of this country, and a brotherhood of men, whose ideals
and beliefs are those of modern civilization, are essential to
the welfare of our college men.

In furtherance of these aims, this Fraternity has recognized
certain standards of attainment and gentlemanly conduct,
expressed in the ideals symbolically represented by the three
Greek letters, Delta, Sigma, Phi; and it shall be the constant
endeavor of the brothers who may be called upon to preside over and
govern the Fraternity, or it's component chapters, to enforce the
precepts of the fraternity by every reasonable means within
their power, and they, and each brother of the Fraternity shall
exemplify those principles by conduct as well as enforcement
in order that the Fraternity may grow and prosper with honor
to itself and that the world may ever be convinced
of the sincerity of our purpose.

The Symphony of
Alpha Xi Delta

These things do we earnestly desire:

A clear vision of life, that with gracious and
kindly hearts we may share both joy and sorrow
and bring into living reality the sisterhood of women.

An appreciation of real merit and worth,
steadfastness of soul, that without bitterness
or defeat we may encounter misfortune and
with humility meet success.

These things, O Lord, help us to instill within
our hearts that we may grow in courage
and graciousness and peace.

Alpha Sigma Tau's Creed

As a member of Alpha Sigma Tau,
I believe in the permanence and loveliness of it's ideals
I believe in the values of friendship and fidelity to purpose
I believe in fulfillment of self and will strive to contribute my share to the progress of mankind

I believe that faithfulness to these ideals will help me to live joyously and vailiantly.

The Creed of Sigma Alpha Mu

“…To foster and maintain among its sons a spirit of fraternity, a spirit of mutual moral aid and support; to instill and maintain in the hearts of its sons love for and loyalty to Alma Mater and its ideals; to inculcate among its sons such ideals as will result in actions worthy of the highest precepts of true manhood, democracy, and humanity.”

nauadpi 07-16-2002 06:59 PM

The creed for Alpha Delta Pi...and I have to agree with everyone that all the creeds are just so moving, especially and always your own.

I Believe in Alpha Delta Pi.

I Believe that my sorority is more than a ritual, or a symbol; That it is a way of life.

I Believe that the princicples established by our founders in 1851 are enduring attributes, exemplifying the highest ideals of Christian womanhood.

I Believe that our motto, "We Live For Each Other", expresses the true spirit of fraternity; and that by living this motto my life will be enriched by true friendships and by unselfish service to mankind.

I Believe that the privilege of membership in Alpha Delta Pi brings the responsibility to do my best in whatever I undertake, always remembering that leadership requires confidence tempered with humility and courage blended with tolerance.

I Believe that I must strive to become a well-balanced person by following the dictates of the four points symbolizied by our diamond-shaped badge: first, strengthening my own character and personality; second, watching my attitudes toward my fellowbeings; third, recognizing the value of high educational standards; and fourth, developing faith and loyalty.

I Believe that these four guide posts, guarded by the stars and friendly hands clasped in the Adelphean bonds of fellowship will lead me to achieve a rich and useful life.

Sigma Alpha Iota does not have a creed, but we DO have a very beautiful Symphony which I'd like to share with you all:

The Symphony of Sigma Alpha Iota

To study and practice the goodness of life, the beauty of art, the meaning of music.

To sing the song of sincerity and universal peace.

To speak the words that build, that bless and comfort.

To play the harpstrings of loving kindness, tolerance, appreciation, and genuine gratitude.

To strive for the joy of simplicity, for the noble, to be faithful over a few things.

To listen, to be still and know the harmony from within.

To falter never in seeking loving service, wisdom, and understanding.

In a word to be loyal to Sigma Alpha Iota and her teachings; to find joy, hope, inspiration; to remember that "ever good gift and every perfect gift is from above" and "whatsoever ye do, do it heartily as to the Lord, and not unto men."

And again to practice.

This is to be our Symphony.

I think it is so beautiful and touching...I get goosebumps everytime I read it or say it.

Phi Kappa Tau's Creed

The Creed of Phi Kappa Tau
Phi Kappa Tau, by admitting me to membership, has conferred upon me a mark of distictive in which I take just pride. I believe in the spirit of brotherhood for which it stands. I shall strive to attain its ideals, and by so doing to bring to it honor and credit. I shall be loyal to my college and my chapter and shall keep strong my ties to them that I may ever retain the spirit of youth. I shall be a good and loyal citizen. I shall try always to discharge the obligations to others which arises from the fact that I am a Fraternity man.

Isn't it neat?

Phi Mu and Sigma Nu both have "Love, Honor, Truth" as the cornerstone of our creeds and of our fraternity. I wonder if there is some kind of historical connection between us?

The Creed of Sigma Appha Epsilon

The True Gentleman -

The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe.

OK, someone already posted the Zeta creed, which I love. But I did want to say that if any of y'all get a minute, go to the Sigma Nu national website and read the long version of their creed. I think it's one of the best and it's incredibly moving and insightful.

Phi Sigma Sigma Founders Creed & Mission Statement

Our Founders Creed

To you, Founders of Phi Sigma Sigma, who gave us being and meaning on the twenty-sixth of November, in the year 1913, we dedicate anew your fraternity in its present extent. To the brotherhood of man and to the alleviation of the world's pain, twin ideals which drew you together, we repledge ourselves with new fervor. Witness to your reverence of the goal you set for us, this day shall see a nationwide votary, when all chapters of Phi Sigma Sigma shall do homage unto you and shall devote themselves in act and in belief to the selfless giving which knows no creed.

Our Mission Statement

To create an environment that fosters the advancement of womanhood and growth and development of each member through commitment to leadership, academic excellence, philanthropic service, good health and citizenship. We pledge to perpetuate these goals and ideals to all who will know us in the name of Phi Sigma Sigma.

TexasAGD 07-19-2002 08:41 PM

Everyone's creed is so moving and powerful. Its the foundation and backbone of what each chapter stands for. We are all sitting on top of a gold mine as our creed will help guide us to become a better person. Make no mistake - learn it, live it, and believe in it!
